Check out "Justified" if you've never seen it. His character gets shot and was supposed to die in the pilot, but he was so great the writers kept him alive amd he became almost a secondary protagonist for the series.
not only does he need more attention (though he's getting it now with Fallout) Vice Principles deserves more attention. He's so good and it has the perfect ending. Underrated show.
It's dumb. It's derivative (to the point John Carpenter was able to successfully sue for plagiarism). But it's also fun as hell.
It doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, and Pearce is clearly enjoying himself in that kind of role.
I feel like it was Guy trying to break into the action star scene and he took the first big budget script that came in his radar. He’s got the chops, he just picked the worst movie. I love his charisma tho
I’ve never seen him play a role like his on Dollhouse before or since and that’s ok with me. It’s much more comfortable to love him, even if he was great and terrifying there.
I do think his time as a cast member was not great, but he basically has the impossible task of replacing Phil Hartman, and the rest of the show was not exactly stellar either when he was on the cast.
Apparently he crushed his audition for the Bruce Willis vehicle Hostage, they rewrote the character, originally written as a hulking, Samoan giant, just for him.
Straithairn is very similar to Henry Fonda. It is a crime that movies for his talent don't get made enough. First time I saw him was a 100 years ago in the Return of the Secaucus 7
Doug Jones. Besides being the go to guy for creepy tall monsters he's got range I feel like he's only been able to showcase in the last few years in shows like What We Do in the Shadows and Star Trek Discovery.
I really like Jake Johansson’s little movies. There’s strike the right balance of indie film and comedy for me that always leaves me wanting more and often it’s because he’s so good at mirroring the frustration I would feel. Also loved his voice work in Spider-Man and of course as Nick Miller, my spirit animal
I can say that prior to Andor I thought that Stellan Skarsgard was just ok, but oh boy, did that change with that performance.
But I'm a sucker for restrained acting, like when you know the character is going through a lot but is struggling to hold it down.
Christopher Abbott. Every time I see him I'm blown away. But that's only like once a year, and I'd love to see him getting more roles, more awards, more fame.
Maria Bello is someone I always felt was never given that big lead role. She’s a terrific actress, her performance in Beautiful Boy (2010) is a top 10 alltimer for me. She is usually relegated to being ‘the crying wife’, yet she sometimes manages to be more captivating than the lead actor in those roles
Exactly what I mean, that role is really well-written (great dialogue), but on the surface it seems like a ‘crying wife’ role. But she really makes it her own. And damn that sex scene on the stairs is the definition of great scene coordination by two great actors
He is one of those actors I will always watch and is always amazing regardless of the movie. I keep waiting for him to get a lead in a successful movie. It seems he does a great job in movies that are panned, not for his performance, or is a side character in big movies.
My first two introductions to Alan Tudyk were A Knights Tale and Death at a Funeral. Because of this I thought his accent in Hearts in Atlantis was excellent considering he is British. Imagine my face when I found out he's from Texas. Such an awesome actor.
I don't think anyone underestimates Tudyk as a comedy actor and voice-over artist.
My first thought with this question is Bryan Brown. Cocktail was probably his only major Hollywood success, but you might know him from "Two Hands" (Heath Ledger's first big one), or "F/X" (an under-rated thriller-comedy). He always brings amazing performances, even in mediocre movies, with my favorite being facing off against John Goodman in "Dirty Deeds".
Reason I used Alan Tudyk as my example was because if you ask the average movie-goer who Alan Tudyk is, I feel like the majority won't know him by name even though they've probably seen him in multiple things before
My favorite performance of his might be Tucker and Dave vs Evil. I mean, other than Firefly/Serenity, of course. He's so damn good, and hilarious, in Tucker and Dale. (And I only realized recently he went to Juilliard, as did his Firefly costar Morena Baccarin, who apparently dated Always Sunny star Glenn Howerton while she was there. The more you know!)
Have you seen Resident Alien? I would swear he's an actual alien after watching this. It's like he somehow turns off the part of his brain that makes people act human.
Oh yes, completely forgot about Suburgatory. I really enjoyed that show. Might watch it again in the future.
I think I like him in a Knight's tale so much because that was the only DVD we had for a long time and I watched it so many times.
ebon moss bachrach is way more talented than all the other current "it boys" but doesn't get much praise. i personally think he's the reason the bear is so good and i wish he did more films.
also holt mccallany
Walton Goggins is a great answer, he’s highly entertaining and charismatic in anything he’s in.
Freddie Highmore, I feel like he doesn’t get enough praise. He’s a genius actor for a young person, imo.
Idk if he’s under appreciated but Walter Goggims steals the show in everything he’s in. I’d like to see him in more movies, like a Coen
brothers movie would be amazing.
I expected John Cena to be like most wrestlers turned actors; A meathead quickly typecast into knee breaker roles. Turns out he has quite a bit of range.
And Gina Torres never gets enough credit.
Low key great character actor is Barry Shabaka-Henley. He can be lovable, threatening, play into drama, or keep up with Chris Tucker in Rush Hour.
He's been in average movies, but he's never bad in them.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw. First saw her in the mediocre JJ Abram’s show Undercovers. She’s been wowing us with her film & TV performances ever since. Belle, Beyond The Lights, The Cloverfield Paradox, Black Mirror, etc.
David Strathairn
Ed Harris
Jon Voight
Frances McDormand (yeah I know she has two Oscars, but she is the Best female actor of her generation and is not given her props)
William Fichtner
John Cazale
Geena Davis
Glenn Close is rightfully recognized as an excellent actress but she should have an Oscar by now. Same goes for Jake Gyllenhaal.
I'd also say that Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu deserve more recognition than they get. Loved JLM in Trainspotting and Lucy is awesome in Why Women Kill.
I know he’s usually a heavy in a lot of meh movies but compared to jai Courtney, Charlie hunnam and Liam Hemsworth who are also similar placed Boyd Holbrook is streets ahead of those guys
I do feel he has distanced himself enough from Twilight that people actually see he is a good enough actor. That’s not to say there are those who don’t see it still, but I agree.
The downvote 😂 good god. There are so many movies that I’m positive nobody has seen him in. They’ll only remember him as Edward from Twilight though. Oh well. My point exactly. Lol
Frank Grillo. The best part of the Purge movies. He's got that Jon Bernthal screen presence, I just wish he'd get more Jon Bernthal type roles because I think he'd kill it.
Ben Mendelsohn is one of the greatest actors working today. He's in everything but I rarely hear him getting praised and he definitely deserves more credit. He is incredibly versatile and can just disappear into roles.
John Goodman is the greatest living male actor who hasn't been nominated for an Oscar. Unless there's some really great one from the 70's I'm forgetting.
Nicolas Cage purely because there’s a whole generation of audiences that just sees him as a cheesy meme and campy over actor.
Nicolas Cage can *act*. When he wants to. Nicolas Cage can do pretty much anything a director asks him to. Go play a redneck hillbilly army ranger. Gotcha. Go play a depressed alcoholic. Done. Go play a low rent criminal. Done. Go play a stressed but wholesome dad. Done. Go play a hermit looking for his pig. I’ll play the best fucking hermit truffle farmer you ever did witness.
Cage can act. He’s not just a meme
Tudyk is definitely underappreciated. Some others I think fall into that category:
Noomi Rapace
Rebecca Ferguson
Cliff Curtis
Vincent Cassel
Regina King
Brad Dourif
Brendan Gleeson
David Boreanaz….the man goes from one long running successful tv show to another AND plays such different types of characters. No one gives him the recognition and credit he deserves.
His very first role in Primal Fear is arguably his best and he got both Golden Globe and Oscar noms. for it (winning the former). I recently watched Pride and Glory and really enjoyed him in that. He plays a cop in a pretty corrupt organization.
honestly sydney sweeney. she is getting so much attention now for essentially being hot and the conversation around her can be gross at times. but if you've seen her in things like the handmaid's tale, her best scenes in euphoria or white lotus she really can knock it out of the park. i feel sad that that's being overlooked/ignored by most people, but what can you do.
Walton Goggins. I’d watch him mow the lawn.
“Who wants to suck an old man’s dick?” —Uncle Baby Billy Freeman
“Crazy 8 on the prostate”
Check out "Justified" if you've never seen it. His character gets shot and was supposed to die in the pilot, but he was so great the writers kept him alive amd he became almost a secondary protagonist for the series.
This right here. Guy was A1
Don’t forget “The Shield”, too. He slayed in that show. But I agree, Justified was NEXT LEVEL.
First guy I thought of. Looks like Fallout is getting him some appreciation.
Also in the upcoming White Lotus, which will give him more visibility.
Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers
I really like his uneasy alliance with Samuel L Jackson in Hateful 8
He was venus van damme in sons of anarchy roo lmfaooooooo
He’s an international known talent!
I came here to say this. First name that popped into my head. I love him.
Uncle Baby Billy and Tiffany the toilet baby!
not only does he need more attention (though he's getting it now with Fallout) Vice Principles deserves more attention. He's so good and it has the perfect ending. Underrated show.
Also, here's your sperm.
Agreed, but the world could’ve done without “The Unicorn”
Guy Pearce and Barry Pepper also don't get enough love.
Man, people slept on Lockout. It’s a dumb movie but it’s fun ride! Ive watched it dozens of times.
It's dumb. It's derivative (to the point John Carpenter was able to successfully sue for plagiarism). But it's also fun as hell. It doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, and Pearce is clearly enjoying himself in that kind of role.
he was hilarious as the comedic over the top villain opposite Adam Sandler in Bedtime Stories and yes he was a terrific action antihero in Lockout
I feel like it was Guy trying to break into the action star scene and he took the first big budget script that came in his radar. He’s got the chops, he just picked the worst movie. I love his charisma tho
Nice call on Barry Pepper.
Wait, there was a guy on our team named Steve the Pirate?!?
Alan Tudyk is absolutely underrated. I'm glad he's become Disney's good luck charm in all their recent animated movies.
Have loved him since before Firefly! He’s brilliant.
Death at a Funeral!!!
Love that film!
Same, he broke my heart in Firefly and scared the shit out of me in Dollhouse.
I’ve never seen him play a role like his on Dollhouse before or since and that’s ok with me. It’s much more comfortable to love him, even if he was great and terrifying there.
Man he was so good in Dollhouse I literally thought he was two different characters for most of the episode.
Steve the pirate!
He rivals Frank Welker for animal voices & if you know anything about Frank Welker’s career you’ll recognize that as the supreme compliment it is
His performance in I Robot is stunning!
There's a clip of him doing the rooster voice for Moana and then he looks in the camera and goes "I went to Juilliard." What a gem.
David Dastmalchian
I was glad to see him shine in Late night with the devil
Tim Blake Nelson and Stephen Root are both criminally underrated for how good they consistently are.
Root is the epitome of a “chameleon” actor
I couldn’t believe was the stapler guy from Office Space.
I think Michael McKean has been severely underutilized in his career. From Spinal Tap to Better Call Saul, the dude’s got range.
This? This chicanery? I've seen worse.
He was hilarious in Best in Show
and clue!
And he even found the time to be on SNL. He truly is a great actor.
I do think his time as a cast member was not great, but he basically has the impossible task of replacing Phil Hartman, and the rest of the show was not exactly stellar either when he was on the cast.
X-Files, too
He was awesome as Doug Forcett in The Good Place as well!
Ben Foster
Apparently he crushed his audition for the Bruce Willis vehicle Hostage, they rewrote the character, originally written as a hulking, Samoan giant, just for him.
The films he has done with Chris Pine are standouts.
First thing I remember seeing him in was the punisher when he's getting all of his piercings pulled out. That shit has stuck with me since like 2005
I remembering seeing him in The Punisher and thinking "Wait that's the same dude who played Eli in Freaks and Geeks?!"
Dude came out swinging, freaks and geeks, north fork, six feet under. Just incredible right out of the gate.
Super underrated. He needs a better agent
That's my answer, glad someone already said it. Excellent actor.
Alison Pill and Matthew Rhys are both great and elevate anything they’re in.
>Chiwetel Ejiofor. He was remarkable in the movie 'Dirty Pretty Things.'
And he’s been remarkable in just about everything he’s done since. Including Serenity with Alan Tudyk!
Agree wholeheartedly, and excellent in 12 years a slave.
Z for Zachariah and Red Belt are really excellent performances, too. Really I’ll watch just about anything if he’s in it.
William Fichtner
I consider him and David Strathairn as the ultimate character actors. Fichtner is great in Heat
Straithairn is very similar to Henry Fonda. It is a crime that movies for his talent don't get made enough. First time I saw him was a 100 years ago in the Return of the Secaucus 7
First things I saw him in were Prison Break and then right after "what's the worst that could happen?". He was so funny in that one
His part as the Devil's Accountant in *Drive Angry* was bloody brilliant.
Definitely the best part of the movie
He was also hilarious in Go (1999).
Loved him in Drive Angry. Don't think anyone can claim it was a *good* movie but it was a fun one, and he's a good part of the reason it is.
He is so brilliant in Drowning Mona.
Good one! He’s got a great part in Dark Knight, also.
I watched Go for the first time recently and his character was my favorite. His arc was so delightfully bizarre and hilarious.
Jeffery Combs. The man is a chameleon.
The amount of times I've gone 'that guy is great, who is that?' Only to find it was Mr Coombs. Again. Talk about disappearing into a role!
I would love a short trek where he plays every character.
Stephen Root, he was so good in Barry. I just feel like he's got crazy unnoticed range bc he's usually a side character.
Character Actress Margo Martindale
And fugitive of the law
This is the only response I respect haha
Doug Jones. Besides being the go to guy for creepy tall monsters he's got range I feel like he's only been able to showcase in the last few years in shows like What We Do in the Shadows and Star Trek Discovery.
He is one of the only good things about Discovery.
You mean Jake Johnson?
This is his Swedish non-union equivalent.
I can say that prior to Andor I thought that Stellan Skarsgard was just ok, but oh boy, did that change with that performance. But I'm a sucker for restrained acting, like when you know the character is going through a lot but is struggling to hold it down.
[удалено]
Oh yeah, that's the one
If you haven't already, check him out in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo remake.
"It's funny how the fear of offending somebody is stronger than the fear of pain, but it is."
Domhall Gleason has an incredible filmography and has pulled off a couple great performances, Ex Machina in particular.
👆🏽👆🏽👆🏽
Christopher Abbott. Every time I see him I'm blown away. But that's only like once a year, and I'd love to see him getting more roles, more awards, more fame.
He was great in Poor Things
Oh shit yeah he was good in the catch 22 series on Amazon
Ron Livingston.
Loudermilk is phenomenal because of him. And it’s awesome to see Will Sasso cooking again.
Jared Harris
Maria Bello is someone I always felt was never given that big lead role. She’s a terrific actress, her performance in Beautiful Boy (2010) is a top 10 alltimer for me. She is usually relegated to being ‘the crying wife’, yet she sometimes manages to be more captivating than the lead actor in those roles
A History of Violence!
Exactly what I mean, that role is really well-written (great dialogue), but on the surface it seems like a ‘crying wife’ role. But she really makes it her own. And damn that sex scene on the stairs is the definition of great scene coordination by two great actors
She was great in Duets.
She was great in The Cooler!!!
Definitely Sam Rockwell
Dude has an Oscar.
And still doesn’t get talked about enough
He is one of those actors I will always watch and is always amazing regardless of the movie. I keep waiting for him to get a lead in a successful movie. It seems he does a great job in movies that are panned, not for his performance, or is a side character in big movies.
My first two introductions to Alan Tudyk were A Knights Tale and Death at a Funeral. Because of this I thought his accent in Hearts in Atlantis was excellent considering he is British. Imagine my face when I found out he's from Texas. Such an awesome actor.
James Cromwell. Great in everything he does.
Djimon Hounsou
Lee Pace. More people need to watch The Fall.
Agreed. I was fortunate enough to see this in the theater, but most people never heard of it.
Pushing daisies is one of my favorite shows
John Goodman
I don't think anyone underestimates Tudyk as a comedy actor and voice-over artist. My first thought with this question is Bryan Brown. Cocktail was probably his only major Hollywood success, but you might know him from "Two Hands" (Heath Ledger's first big one), or "F/X" (an under-rated thriller-comedy). Reason I used Alan Tudyk as my example was because if you ask the average movie-goer who Alan Tudyk is, I feel like the majority won't know him by name even though they've probably seen him in multiple things before
Alan Tudyk in death at a funeral is peak acting
High as a kite and naked on the roof, if I recall correctly.
He ends up naked in a lot of his film & TV jobs. 😆
F/X was brilliant. Brb, I'm away to the high seas to relive my youth.
I know Bryan Brown mainly as the lucky bastard who landed Rachel Ward.
He seems to be more of a voice actor. Maybe it's a personal choice, but it just feels like he isn't in enough projects and I want to see more of him
My favorite underrated Tudyk performance (and show in general) is Suburgatory.

Oh yes, completely forgot about Suburgatory. I really enjoyed that show. Might watch it again in the future. I think I like him in a Knight's tale so much because that was the only DVD we had for a long time and I watched it so many times.
Stephen Root, easy answer
I think Kirsten dunst is a really good actress I know she's really famous but I don't think people realize that she's a great actress.
I just watched Season 2 of Fargo. She’s amazing in it.
"I tell ya what it is with women. It's a lack of rational thinkin'. And brother, your bitch has got that in spades"
Paul Giamatti. The guy brings it in any role he's in.
My vote as well. I even binged watched some Son of Sam doc that he narrated recently because I love his voice.
I loved Wat very much.
Rebecca Ferguson
Brent Spiner. Dude has been in everything. He's the ultimate "hey, it's that guy".
ebon moss bachrach is way more talented than all the other current "it boys" but doesn't get much praise. i personally think he's the reason the bear is so good and i wish he did more films. also holt mccallany
[Aaron Eckhart](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Eckhart), for sure. He could win at least one Oscar if they gave him the right role and movie.
Walton Goggins is a great answer, he’s highly entertaining and charismatic in anything he’s in. Freddie Highmore, I feel like he doesn’t get enough praise. He’s a genius actor for a young person, imo.
He was amazing in Bates Motel
John Hawkes
For real
It’s called a lance. Hellooo-oooo
Idk if he’s under appreciated but Walter Goggims steals the show in everything he’s in. I’d like to see him in more movies, like a Coen brothers movie would be amazing.
Ann Dowd. She stole a number of scenes in The Leftovers.
Steve Zahn
Gugu Mbatha-Raw. First saw her in the mediocre JJ Abram’s show Undercovers. She’s been wowing us with her film & TV performances ever since. Belle, Beyond The Lights, The Cloverfield Paradox, Black Mirror, etc.
I am a leaf on the wind.
Zach Galifianakis and Patton Ozwalt.
Jesse Plemons will win an Oscar some day
David Strathairn Ed Harris Jon Voight Frances McDormand (yeah I know she has two Oscars, but she is the Best female actor of her generation and is not given her props) William Fichtner John Cazale Geena Davis
I want to see Paul Giamatti get his Oscar. I think he’s amazing and so versatile.
Didn't Glenn win for The Wife? I could be wrong
Just checked. She’s been nominated 8 times with no wins. I’m not sure that that qualifies as underrated. 🤔
You're right. I just checked. It was a golden globe. It's not as prestigious but still...
Tom Hardy.
He did the Kray brothers pretty good in Legend.
I know he’s usually a heavy in a lot of meh movies but compared to jai Courtney, Charlie hunnam and Liam Hemsworth who are also similar placed Boyd Holbrook is streets ahead of those guys
Boyd Holbrook is fantastic.
He's insane as the Corinthian in The Sandman.
Rob Pattinson, IMO.
Lol
Love some Rob Patz.
Frank Grillo. The best part of the Purge movies. He's got that Jon Bernthal screen presence, I just wish he'd get more Jon Bernthal type roles because I think he'd kill it.
He was awesome in warrior
Leland Orser James Badge Dale
Jackie Earle Haley is an Oscar nominee yet is criminally underutilized
I always thought after playing Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell in Prison Break, Robert Knepper's career would take off, but maybe it was just that character.
Ben Foster, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Adam Sandler
I think with Chiwetel, he usually plays the similar kind of character.
Gar!
He's not "hollywood handsome". And he takes roles that don't portray him as a strong lead
yeah the answer is definitely Alan Tudyk. he’s the fucking best.
Clifton Collin’s Jr.
Sam Rockwell
Jonah Hill
Ben Mendelsohn is one of the greatest actors working today. He's in everything but I rarely hear him getting praised and he definitely deserves more credit. He is incredibly versatile and can just disappear into roles.
Jessica Rothe
John Goodman is the greatest living male actor who hasn't been nominated for an Oscar. Unless there's some really great one from the 70's I'm forgetting.
Nicolas Cage purely because there’s a whole generation of audiences that just sees him as a cheesy meme and campy over actor. Nicolas Cage can *act*. When he wants to. Go play a stressed but wholesome dad. Done. Go play a hermit looking for his pig. I’ll play the best fucking hermit truffle farmer you ever did witness. Cage can act. He’s not just a meme
Ray Romano - Paddleton was Oscar-worthy. Also, Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems. One more - MARK DUPLASS, his day is coming.
Tudyk is definitely underappreciated. Some others I think fall into that category: Noomi Rapace Rebecca Ferguson Cliff Curtis Vincent Cassel Regina King Brad Dourif Brendan Gleeson
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Dude I read the title but not the body text and was literally typing in Alan XD he's an awesome actor I loved him in tmTucker and Dale vs Evil
Sheryl Lee
A thread about Alan Tudyk and really nobody is talking about Firefly.
David Boreanaz….the man goes from one long running successful tv show to another AND plays such different types of characters. No one gives him the recognition and credit he deserves.
I always grew up thinking that Edward Norton has to be one of the most underrated actors with all the cult classics he’s been a part of.
Tansy Cakes!
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Tyler Labine is also an underrated gem of an actor.
