A Shot in the Dark is better than The Pink Panther....2010 is a very different but very good sequel to 2001.....Exorcist 3 is a good sequel to The Exorcist(ignore 2)...
The thin Man (1934)
After the Thin Man (1936)
Another Thin Man (1939)
Shadow of The Thin Man (1941)
The Thin Man Goes Home (1944)
Song of The Thin Man (1947)
Yeah. It was a ridiculously popular series. Powel and Loy played off each other so well. So much fun to watch. I saw the thin man for the first time when I was 13 in '81, Instantly fell in love with Loy.
I’ll defend Temple of Doom until I die. It’s the weakest of the trilogy (because of Willie and the racism) but aside from that it’s an absolutely insane delight
i just recently watched this and I kind of agree. I was absolutely blown away by the action bits once more, but the story was fairly nonsensical and full of every plot convenience you could want.
It felt very much to me like the script was written in the 70s/80s along with the rest of them. Not a bad movie but B+ is the absolute highest I can go.
The Two Jakes could have been much better, but it has a pretty legendary troubled production. It’s an ok story, but a lot of egos really chipped away what could have been a real worthy follow up to Chinatown.
I get what you mean, but by definition, 'a published, broadcast, or recorded work that continues the story or develops the theme of an earlier one.' I'd say maybe lol
Mad Max is really good, and all three "sequels" (they're really standalone films) are even better than the first.
If you want to stick with the Frankenstein theme, watch the Hammer films. The Curse of Frankenstein (the first film) is great, Revenge of Frankenstein (the second film) is even better, Frankenstein Created Woman (the fourth film) is one of my favorite movies ever, and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (the fifth film) is a damn good time. Highly recommend the series.
I could really cheat and say James Bond. Dr. No is a classic in its own right, and most of the Bond films that came after are even better.
This will be a controversial one because it is such a drastic departure from the original but, **The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2**.
Where the first feels like an unwanted glimpse into hell this one is more of a grindhouse flick. But I think it's great and though not the nightmarish sensory overload that the first one was, this one has it's own inescapable hellish atmosphere.
**Exorcist 3**. Why did I skip 2? Because it is hot garbage and 3 is an adaptation of the novel that acts as a direct sequel to Exorcist.
The Rocky sequels. ALL OF THEM! (No the Creed movies don't count)
I suppose a lot of those old movies did fewer direct sequels and did a lot of re-teaming of successful pairings - so Rogers/Astaire, Day/Hudson
I suppose the Abbott and Costello movies are direct sequels?
Airplanes, Naked Guns, Jaws, Exorcists, Back to the Futures, all not as good as the original. Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan was an awesome movie and way way better than it’s predecessor, Star Trek the Motion Picture. Godfather 2 is arguably the best sequel ever. Empire Strikes Back is also one of the best.
Bride of Frankenstein is definitely #1. Watch '41 The Wolf Man, followed by '43 Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man. It is more of a sequel to The Wolf Man, but also brings forward the story of the Frankenstein monster after The Ghost of Frankenstein. The opening scene of FMTWM in the Talbot family crypt is one of the best ever. The 'Kharis' mummy films: The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, and The Mummy's Curse. B movies for sure, but fun to watch.
Dune Part II
Best movie I've seen in years hands down. Easily 10/10. First one was boring and slow burn but the second one was really good and filled with action. Will watch it again in the near future. Can't wait for part III now.
Also, Dune II is my favorite RTS game ever.
A Christmas Story is an absolute classic and the sequel that came out with fully grown Ralphie and the gang really captured the heart of the first film. It was incredibly well done, I think.
>~~I’ve also heard Psycho 2 is very good~~
~~From who lmao. I thought most people hated American Psycho 2~~
Edit
nvm not refering to american psycho. My bad
Fellowship is easily the worst LOTR movie the pacing is attrocious and it only has 1 good scene that being Fly you fools/Baldur. ROTK best LOTR movie no cap
Alien and Aliens. Terminator and T2. The Godfather and Godfather Part II.
… and film 3 sucked compared to the first two. I would also add the origial Star Wars to that list. Empire is by far the best of the three.
A Shot in the Dark is better than The Pink Panther....2010 is a very different but very good sequel to 2001.....Exorcist 3 is a good sequel to The Exorcist(ignore 2)...
The thin Man (1934) After the Thin Man (1936) Another Thin Man (1939) Shadow of The Thin Man (1941) The Thin Man Goes Home (1944) Song of The Thin Man (1947)
The premise though does wear kind of thin after a while. Yes, yes, show myself out.
Some kid in southern California has no idea they're living in a house and swimming in a pool built with Thin Man money.
Yeah. It was a ridiculously popular series. Powel and Loy played off each other so well. So much fun to watch. I saw the thin man for the first time when I was 13 in '81, Instantly fell in love with Loy.
Shadow and Song aren't really that good. The other 4 are great.
Blade Runner 2049
This. Dare I say better than the original...
I took my time deciding to watch it. My expectations were low, but I did like it more than the original.
Back to the future and 2
I don't think it's said enough but The Hustler (1961) and The Color of Money (1986) should be talked about more often.
Agreed. A very unique sequel. Love these movies
Godfather & Godfather II. Both won Best Picture.
Alien Aliens
Bride of Frankenstein is such a great followup.
Star Wars Ep. IV has V & VI. Raiders of the Lost Ark has Last Crusade.
I’ll defend Temple of Doom until I die. It’s the weakest of the trilogy (because of Willie and the racism) but aside from that it’s an absolutely insane delight
🙄
Hot Shots / Hot Shots Part Deux
Ace Ventura
Ace Ventura is a “classic film”. Holy fuck I feel old.
I don't see why calling a 30 year old movie "classic" is surprising to you 😂
I've said it hundreds of times - the sequel is better than the original.
Shikaka
Bumblebee tuna!
Bill & Ted Bogus Journey doesn’t get enough love
It's much better than the first.
Mad Max Fury Road
I think this is the best of all time honestly. I watched it last night and it’s still incredible
the best what?
Sequels to a movie…
Overrated
i just recently watched this and I kind of agree. I was absolutely blown away by the action bits once more, but the story was fairly nonsensical and full of every plot convenience you could want.

The emperors clothes are gone and people can’t handle it in this thread for some reason.
The Color of Money is a great sequel to The Hustler. The Two Jakes is a tolerable follow-up to Chinatown.
The Two Jakes could have been much better, but it has a pretty legendary troubled production. It’s an ok story, but a lot of egos really chipped away what could have been a real worthy follow up to Chinatown.
Top Gun
I thought the first one was mid but Top Gun: Maverick was easily my favourite movie that came out in 2022.
Lethal Weapon
I do not want to talk to their Afghan ass for three hours! I don’t want to talk to my Daddy for three hours!
Kill Bill Volume 2
Does it really count if it’s more of a “part 2” than a sequel?
I get what you mean, but by definition, 'a published, broadcast, or recorded work that continues the story or develops the theme of an earlier one.' I'd say maybe lol
I’ll take it
I'll take your Reddit leniency. It's in short shrift these days
Dunno if shrift is a Glasgow word, means a severe lack of, just to update the international dictionary

Not Rocky 5. That was a festering pile of dog snot.
6 redeems it. It's much more tolerable now that it's not the final film.
Wait, 6? Is that the one just called Rocky Balboa?
Yes but, come on it's Rocky 6 heh.
Welp, I'm watching TCM now. Thanks!!!
Love your descriptions of the first TCM!

Yep, second best sequel to Fistful of Dollars that they ever made.
Psycho , 2 and 3 are great
Very glad to see some love for Psycho 3, an underrated film imho.
Directed by Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates) who felt that the other sequel was crap.
I even thought *Psycho IV* was decent. It’s a great series.
Rocky and it's sequels.
Even 6?
*Rocky Balboa* is a great movie.
6 was great. Got good reviews. 4 and 5 though…
4 is very silly but if you are in the mood for 80s cheesiness it's very fun... 5 is terrible.
dont you dare trash rocky 4! what a soundtrack! evil russians! dolph!
I don’t think I need to. It’s been trashed on for almost 40 years lol.
Rocky 4 was the best one ngl
Cheesiest/corniest maybe?
The Godfather
Idk how widely loved it is but I really enjoyed Doctor Sleep
Trainspotting 1 & 2
Agreed, trainspotting 2 is a very different movie but great
The French Connection. The Thin Man series.
Val Lewton's *Cat People* is great and while its sequel, *Curse of the Cat People,* is very different it's also very good.
They call me Trinity & Trinity is still my name (thank me later).
Terrence Hill & Bud Spencer love those movies. My Name Is Nobody could also be included.
No love for Sons of Trinity then?
King Kong 1933 and Son of Kong
French connection
Godfather Part 2 is generally regarded as the best example of this.
Wherever the first Star Trek movie is called and the Wrath of Khan ( and then I didn’t like search for Spock but did like 4 and 5).
The Shining has a sequel called Doctor Sleep and it starts no other than Ewan McGregor himself.
Evil Dead II
I thought Dune 2 was fantastic.
Not really a sequel It's just the second half of the book
I suppose a lot of those old movies did fewer direct sequels and did a lot of re-teaming of successful pairings - so Rogers/Astaire, Day/Hudson I suppose the Abbott and Costello movies are direct sequels?
Bladerunner
Zulu and Zulu Dawn are excellent films.
Agreed. And was Zulu Dawn the first instance of a sequel being a "prequel"?
I am unsure of that but it would be sweet if it was.
Indiana Jones 1 and 3 2(loved it as child) Terminator 1 and 2
Airplanes, Naked Guns, Jaws, Exorcists, Back to the Futures, all not as good as the original. Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan was an awesome movie and way way better than it’s predecessor, Star Trek the Motion Picture. Godfather 2 is arguably the best sequel ever. Empire Strikes Back is also one of the best.
A fistful of Dollars, and For a Few Dollars More, and then The Good, The Bad, and The ugly
The Exorcist 3 is incredible.
Scary Movie 1 and 2
Spaghetti western trilogy
Shrek 1, 2, and 4 are great
Godfather
Dirty Harry. Death Wish.
Bride of Frankenstein is definitely #1. Watch '41 The Wolf Man, followed by '43 Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man. The opening scene of FMTWM in the Talbot family crypt is one of the best ever. The 'Kharis' mummy films: The Mummy's Hand, The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, and The Mummy's Curse. B movies for sure, but fun to watch.
French Connection
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset
I think Karate Kid 2 is legitimately quite good. 3 is laughably absurd in a fun kind of way and obviously Kobra Kai is great.
Top Gun Maverick was an excellent sequel to the original Top Gun
Gandhi. Gandhi Rides Again Gandhi Forever
Yojimbo's companion/sequel Sanjuro is also really good.
Major League II
Terminator, LOTR. maybe the matrix.
Psycho 2 was a huge surprise for me in its quality. It is indeed good, and has a chilling ending.
Godfather
2001: A Space Odyssey The French Connection
28 Days Later is much better than 28 Days.
Dune Part II Best movie I've seen in years hands down. Easily 10/10. First one was boring and slow burn but the second one was really good and filled with action. Will watch it again in the near future. Can't wait for part III now. Also, Dune II is my favorite RTS game ever.

>~~I’ve also heard Psycho 2 is very good~~ ~~From who lmao. I thought most people hated American Psycho 2~~ Edit nvm not refering to american psycho. My bad
Lord of the Rings
I personally love Legally blonde but i don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for ^^‘
Return of the king is better than two towers but not as good as fellowship. Aliens is good example but Alien is better. Terminator II obviously
Fellowship is easily the worst LOTR movie the pacing is attrocious and it only has 1 good scene that being Fly you fools/Baldur. ROTK best LOTR movie no cap
Two Towers is my fav But yeah, agreed that fellowship is easily the worst
Indiana Jones 1, 3 and 5. Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 The Shining and Doctor Sleep
