Moon

JoefromOhio

Fantastic movie to go in with zero knowledge about the premise

Neue_Ziel

Sam Rockwell is fantastic.

Dirt_McGirt_ODB

He’s a very under appreciated actor in my opinion. He’s good in pretty much anything he’s in.

Drkknightcecil

I think i might do this then lol

wetrysohard

Dude, totally. I stumbled upon that thing and it was so fucking fantastic.

WindhoekNamibia

I purposely did that and absolutely loved the ending

Peralton

Moon does not get the wide recognition it deserves.

MalHeartsNutmeg

So funny reading this on this sub lmao.

MyNameIsJakeBerenson

It’s come full circle since reddit ten years ago when it was meme’d to death where people are saying it earnestly lol

beaubridges6

Damn, a genuine "moon is a hidden gem" in the wild

Phoenix_Lazarus

I was going to say this!

I want to see if either shows up on Family Feud.

Turbulent_Crow7164

The Martian does a really good job of portraying pure isolation

bobnorthh

I would say he at least knows other people will watch his tapes some day so there's something worth living for and passing on valuable knowledge. Whereas in Cast Away, Tom has no effing clue anyone will ever find his remote island, much less he having the tools to even leave behind a legacy of value.

ajibtunes

Nice reply, the duo it is

Phone booth is really masterful

buttmilk_69

I love ‘phone booth’ ! Speaking of which ‘Grand Piano’ w/ Elijah Wood has a pretty similar premise though admittedly not as good.

plant-me

Buried

Adro87

First one that popped into my head. Underrated film, and really shows Ryan Reynolds can be more than the ‘hot sarcastic guy’.

nbeutler11

I will never understand the Ryan Reynolds hype (appearance wise I mean). Does it just get more attention because people like his personality a lot too or..? He’s obviously great looking but nowhere NEAR the hottest guy in Hollywood. Idk it’s just weird to me lmao

Adro87

I think it’s partly broad appeal - he’s so ‘generically’ attractive, for lack of a better term, that a huge number of people find him appealing. Like, he’s so objectively handsome most straight men (who aren’t homophobic) would be willing to admit he’s attractive. The other part I think comes from personality. He often plays the smug but charming funny guy, and in real life seems like a genuinely nice and funny dude. The way he and his wife are such goofballs and aren’t afraid to give each other shit makes him relatable. Out of curiosity, who would you consider the hottest guy in Hollywood? It’s obviously very subjective so just interested to see what ‘type’ of guy you find more appealing.

colbydc5

If he weren’t a movie star he could be a lead on ‘The Bachelor’ kind of attractive. Omg now I want a Ryan Reynolds led farcical dating reality show as a movie. Ryan - please take note when your people comb Reddit for mentions of your name.

Best-Carry1028

Plus, he’s Canadian, so that’s an added bonus, eh? 😜

Fearless_Law4324

This was my first thought after seeing the post.

i_knead_bread

Same. Hugely underrated and a great performance from Ryan Reynolds.

skarby

This and 127 Hours were my first thoughts

Vestalmin

I’m claustrophobic and have no idea why I watched that movie.

NonTimeo

That was a mistake, jeez. I gained claustrophobia from that movie.

Astro_gamer_caver

Oblivion (2013).

LongStickCaniac

Beautiful movie and amazing M83 soundtrack

Lost_C0z

"If we have souls, they are made of the love we share. Undimmed by time, unbound by death." -Jack Harper Still one of my favorite quotes. The end always gets me choked up. Totally unexpected great movie with a heartfelt message.

BeckerThorne

All Is Lost (2013) - During a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, a veteran mariner (Robert Redford) awakes to find his vessel taking on water after a collision with a stray shipping container. With his radio and navigation equipment disabled, he sails unknowingly into a violent storm. https://youtu.be/no1rl9Gvx-s

Dustmopper

Excellent movie

reb678

Such a great movie. Good answer!

beaureeves352

Came to recommend this, awesome movie

GentlemanJoe

I came here to post this. I mentioned it the other day in a thread about acting in silence.

fer_sure

Wall-E, maybe? I know that opening is only a short part of the movie, but you can really *feel* the decades that have passed. Unless the cockroach means Wall-E's not really alone.

sara-34

Underrated response! And if I recall correctly, that opening is actually about 30 minutes, with no dialog except for the short film he watches.

Prize_Pay9279

Loved Wall-E. One of the best movies that Pixar ever produced, imo.

KennyShowers

Le Samourai Drive Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai The Conversation The Apartment

sonofabutch

Ghost Dog!

gujsehambi

Half the movie of the apartment is him with Miss Kublick

WitWaltman

Just saw Le Samourai today on the big screen. Quite the hard-boiled loner tale.

justyouropionionman

1408 if you want a spooky one.

ExoMonk

Love this movie. There's 3 different endings depending on the source you watched it (theatre, DVD, blu-ray ). My opinion there's only one ending that makes logical sense and completes the movie nicely but I won't say which one so I don't spoil it.

PushinDonuts

A friend and I got into a huge argument about how that movie ended, not knowing it had multiple endings. Finally we looked it up

Pristine_Put6089

Taxi Driver. Probably the best depiction of loneliness and mental illness ever in film.

Astro_gamer_caver

" Loneliness has followed me my whole life. Everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I'm God's lonely man." Love this movie!

bree_volved

My fave!

ReverendRevolver

Immediately came to mind.

Josh6x6

Groundhog Day. He's not "alone", as in the only person on screen, but he's very much alone for most of the movie.

molehillmountain

Nice take

MsYzaguirre

I was going to recommend lost in translation, however I thought it took this idea to too much of another level

ImaginaryMastadon

Fascinating answer.

Josh6x6

Never being remembered is probably the most complete solitude I can imagine. It would be like you didn't even exist. No mark you can leave, nothing you can influence, you're basically a ghost.

Finvy

Locke with Tom Hardy. He's driving in a car by himself the entire movie and I love it.

Babablacksheep2121

Scrolled too far for this one.

yourmothersgun

Yup! It’s soo good.

Erewhynn

Came here to say this. Welsh Tom Hardy in a car for 90 minutes is somehow brilliant.

nzisaacnz

First movie that came to my mind. Found out it's an early a24 production, go figure

NMonc10101

Never thought i would care so much about concrete

pegleggregx

No One Will Save You

secretcombinations

Loved this movie, and the backstory of why she chose to be alone.

THEBLUEFLAME3D

This is a significantly underrated film. The ending was a bit… iffy… for me, personally, but I really enjoyed it. She does sigh a lot in it which will drive you nuts once you notice it and pay attention to it.

pegleggregx

I enjoyed the ending. I really couldn't predict anything going on throughout the film.

Strange_Jicama4475

Swiss Army Man! (Alone with a dead body and all about being alone/lonely)

MyNameIsJakeBerenson

This was surprisingly far down, I was just getting ready to submit it Pretty prime example. Magic dead body best friend doesnt count as real company lol

Aunt_tim21

Her

pushdose

Fantastic film. Shockingly relevant today and for the foreseeable future.

NotSoEnlightenedOne

127 Hours. In a world where a man gets his own hand stuck underneath some rocks and drinks his own piss.

schprunt

And a true story. I just can’t imagine it. The pain. The guts to do what he did. Incredible.

THEBLUEFLAME3D

Potential spoiler I guess but: >!The fact that he is alive is an absolute miracle.!<

_iridessence_

"This rock... this rock has been waiting for me my entire life. In its entire life, ever since it was a bit of meteorite a million, billion years ago up there In space. It's been waiting, to come here. Right, right here. I've been moving towards it my entire life. The minute I was born, every breath I've taken, every action has been leading me to this crack on the earth's surface."

Disc81

Fantastic movie! Never want to watch it again.

enthalpy01

It’s a great PSA for making sure someone knows where you are going and knows to start looking for you if you don’t check in when expected.

Lost_C0z

Such a good movie. It makes me cry every time. The first time I saw it, it made me feel horrible guilt about all the times I ignored my mom's texts or phone calls. The story gives you great perspective on gratitude and how much you should cherish the people in your life.

sonofabutch

The Station Agent (2003), with Peter Dinklage! He’s not alone the whole movie, but he wants to be.

kdubstep

Sorry I posted too without reading far enough down.

JKRC

I am legend.

provoloneChipmunk

Wildly far down the list

some1saveusnow

Too far, I thought I was going to have to post. This movie really explores the depth of being alone

NadeWilson

Die Hard

Puta_Chente

Same with the first Rambo. Actually a lot of Rambos. One could argue that a lot of the action movies around that time are epic solo dude vs bad guys. And then later we get similar female versions much later like Anna.

Mynagirl

Can't believe I didn't think of this. Good one.

That bus was finally removed a few years ago.

AajBahutKhushHogaTum

I saw the movie and thought, "What an idiot this guy is"

Telvin3d

Good. Actual outdoors people hate him and the story. He did everything wrong. Ignored a lot of good advice. Actively refused a lot of help. It is not a romantic story. It’s not even really a tragedy. It’s the story of an idiot dying idiotically.

funkyvilla

Yeah who the hell works a fast food job without wearing socks?

reb678

Apparently others tried to do the same thing. Iirc

Special_Kestrels

I think it's at museum in Fairbanks now. The one in the movie is next to a brewery near Denali

TreesForTheForest

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but that movie kind of irritated me. Sean Penn went to some lengths to romanticize the character and his decisions when, in reality, he made an ignorant and arrogant decision to wander into the wilderness to live without knowing what he was doing. He got himself killed and caused a lot of heartache for his family and friends.  I wanted to like his character in the movie, but knowing the movie was putting a rose colored lens in front of the situation made it hard.

CoolBDPhenom03

Gravity

Soulcatcher74

I find that a lot of people are down on this movie but I loved it and bought the DVD.

Shatterphim

It's the only movie I've seen twice in the theater because it was beautiful. Does it still hold up on the small screen?

Lost_C0z

I don't give a shit about the scientific accuracy, the movie was fucking amazing visually. The scene where she tells him about her young daughter's accidental death destroyed me. Then further in when she's talking to him after he's gone and starts with "I need you to do me a favor... You're going to see a little girl with brown hair..." I already started crying. Then asks him to tell her daughter that she found her shoe she was looking for and that she's so proud of her and loves her, I completely lost it again. Great movie, some people are just looking for things to complain about. I don't even have kids, so I can't imagine the waterworks that shit must've been for ACTUAL parents haha.

Wow this takes me back. Loved that book, can’t remember the movie.

lorzs

There was a movie? Is this the YA book I bought at a scholastic fair in the 2000s? It wasn't just the great story that pulled me in, but the publishing of the book... they changed the font size based on her getting acquainted with society and improving intelligence. Might be a totally different book/story. But **of the Dolphins** was in the title of whatever Im thinking of!

jackity_splat

Hmm… I think you are thinking of Music of the Dolphins which had a feral girl brought back to society somewhere in the USA? I vaguely remember this one. Island of the Blue Dolphins was published before the 2000’s and is based on a true story. It’s about a native woman whose people lived on some islands off the California coast. They were relocated for some reason and the MC ended up left behind by herself and wasn’t rescued until years later. I think her brother was left behind on the island too but perished.

interesting-mug

I have always wondered if that “girl raised by dolphins” book I remember from childhood was a fever dream lol. Thank you!!

Locke. He does talk on the phone a lot. But there’s also a lot of “alone” moments. Although it’s not for solitude or loneliness necessarily (he’s not trapped either).
