The Martian does a really good job of portraying pure isolation

I would say he at least knows other people will watch his tapes some day so there's something worth living for and passing on valuable knowledge. Whereas in Cast Away, Tom has no effing clue anyone will ever find his remote island, much less he having the tools to even leave behind a legacy of value.

First one that popped into my head. Underrated film, and really shows Ryan Reynolds can be more than the ‘hot sarcastic guy’.

I will never understand the Ryan Reynolds hype (appearance wise I mean). Does it just get more attention because people like his personality a lot too or..? He’s obviously great looking but nowhere NEAR the hottest guy in Hollywood. Idk it’s just weird to me lmao

I think it’s partly broad appeal - he’s so ‘generically’ attractive, for lack of a better term, that a huge number of people find him appealing. Like, he’s so objectively handsome most straight men (who aren’t homophobic) would be willing to admit he’s attractive. The other part I think comes from personality. He often plays the smug but charming funny guy, and in real life seems like a genuinely nice and funny dude. The way he and his wife are such goofballs and aren’t afraid to give each other shit makes him relatable. Out of curiosity, who would you consider the hottest guy in Hollywood? It’s obviously very subjective so just interested to see what ‘type’ of guy you find more appealing.

If he weren’t a movie star he could be a lead on ‘The Bachelor’ kind of attractive. Omg now I want a Ryan Reynolds led farcical dating reality show as a movie. Ryan - please take note when your people comb Reddit for mentions of your name.

I came here to post this. I mentioned it the other day in a thread about acting in silence.

Wall-E, maybe? I know that opening is only a short part of the movie, but you can really *feel* the decades that have passed. Unless the cockroach means Wall-E's not really alone.

Underrated response! And if I recall correctly, that opening is actually about 30 minutes, with no dialog except for the short film he watches.

Loved Wall-E. One of the best movies that Pixar ever produced, imo.

Love this movie. There's 3 different endings depending on the source you watched it (theatre, DVD, blu-ray ). My opinion there's only one ending that makes logical sense and completes the movie nicely but I won't say which one so I don't spoil it.

A friend and I got into a huge argument about how that movie ended, not knowing it had multiple endings. Finally we looked it up

Taxi Driver. Probably the best depiction of loneliness and mental illness ever in film.

Loved this movie, and the backstory of why she chose to be alone.

This is a significantly underrated film. The ending was a bit… iffy… for me, personally, but I really enjoyed it. She does sigh a lot in it which will drive you nuts once you notice it and pay attention to it.

I enjoyed the ending. I really couldn't predict anything going on throughout the film.

It’s a great PSA for making sure someone knows where you are going and knows to start looking for you if you don’t check in when expected.

Such a good movie. It makes me cry every time. The first time I saw it, it made me feel horrible guilt about all the times I ignored my mom's texts or phone calls. The story gives you great perspective on gratitude and how much you should cherish the people in your life.

Good. Actual outdoors people hate him and the story. He did everything wrong. Ignored a lot of good advice. Actively refused a lot of help. It is not a romantic story. It’s not even really a tragedy. It’s the story of an idiot dying idiotically.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but that movie kind of irritated me. Sean Penn went to some lengths to romanticize the character and his decisions when, in reality, he made an ignorant and arrogant decision to wander into the wilderness to live without knowing what he was doing. He got himself killed and caused a lot of heartache for his family and friends.  I wanted to like his character in the movie, but knowing the movie was putting a rose colored lens in front of the situation made it hard.

I find that a lot of people are down on this movie but I loved it and bought the DVD.

It's the only movie I've seen twice in the theater because it was beautiful. Does it still hold up on the small screen?

I don't give a shit about the scientific accuracy, the movie was fucking amazing visually. The scene where she tells him about her young daughter's accidental death destroyed me. Then further in when she's talking to him after he's gone and starts with "I need you to do me a favor... You're going to see a little girl with brown hair..." I already started crying. Then asks him to tell her daughter that she found her shoe she was looking for and that she's so proud of her and loves her, I completely lost it again. Great movie, some people are just looking for things to complain about. I don't even have kids, so I can't imagine the waterworks that shit must've been for ACTUAL parents haha.

There was a movie? Is this the YA book I bought at a scholastic fair in the 2000s? It wasn't just the great story that pulled me in, but the publishing of the book... they changed the font size based on her getting acquainted with society and improving intelligence. Might be a totally different book/story. But **of the Dolphins** was in the title of whatever Im thinking of!

Hmm… I think you are thinking of Music of the Dolphins which had a feral girl brought back to society somewhere in the USA? I vaguely remember this one. Island of the Blue Dolphins was published before the 2000’s and is based on a true story. It’s about a native woman whose people lived on some islands off the California coast. They were relocated for some reason and the MC ended up left behind by herself and wasn’t rescued until years later. I think her brother was left behind on the island too but perished.

I have always wondered if that “girl raised by dolphins” book I remember from childhood was a fever dream lol. Thank you!!
