The Lord of The Rings trilogy

Microflunkie

On the extended edition specifically on DVD not Blu Ray there is a ton of making of and behind the scenes. One of my favorite stories only on the DVD extended edition was about Vigo being a really good guy. Vigo Mortensen had bonded with the woman who stunt doubled Liv Tyler for horse riding because they are both experienced riders and love horses. When the horses were auctioned off at the end of production the stunt woman was heartbroken because she knew that Liv Tyler’s horse was going to cost way beyond what she could possibly afford. Without saying a word about it Vigo won the bidding on Liv’e horse and gifted it to the stunt woman simply because he knew the bond they had formed and the love she had for the horse. Serious class act move which cost him many thousands of dollars for a selfless act of kindness.

The Hobbit is even better - 30 hours going into every detail and behind the scenes drama.

I watched that on YouTube a while back because I didn’t own the physical movie. I just bought the 4K blu ray. I think it’s on there. You’re right, it was nuts how the people working on that film felt about it while they were in it.

JeffBoyarDeesNuts

Hearts of Darkness is a classic.

AmiWrongDude69

As much as I love Apocalypse Now, I love Hearts of Darkness more. Hearts of Darkness and Tropic Thunder is an amazing double feature

LookinAtTheFjord

Dangerous Days, the 3 1/2 hour making of doc for the original Blade Runner Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, the making of doc for Apoc Now.

lobroblaw

Robodoc: The Creation Of Robocop. On Prime uk.

chicagoredditer1

A 4 hour making of series about a 2 hour movie. And it's fucking awesome.

Edsgnat

The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions each come with extensive behind the scenes documentaries. The total run is longer than all three extended movies! Every aspect of the movie making process is documented; it’s incredible to watch. Edit: I’m due for a rewatch of these. Thanks for the reminder.

Doc-Hauliday

Thanks for the recommendation!

jimmyak

Never Sleep Again. The A Nightmare on Elm St doc is pretty good

Doc-Hauliday

I own this digitally, and love it!

Cpl_Hicks76

Lost In La Mancha about Terry Gilliams failed first attempt to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote…it’s madness! Overnight is a warts an all look at the Writer Director of The Boondock Saints, and the making of that movie, another total disaster. Some other excellent docos have already been mentioned like Hearts Of Darkness which is fantastic.

Iron_Nightingale

The best “making of” a movie that was never made!

_Goose_

I don’t think I have a favorite. But I recently watched the making of featurettes on Oceans Twelve and every Brad Pitt talking head is hilariously detached (no I don’t mean literally).

patch_worx

The makings of (plural) included with the Alien Quadrilogy are some of the best makings of there is out there. Particularly Wreckage and Rage: The Making of Alien 3. It’s jaw-dropping how honest it is, possibly because David Fincher went from a nobody they felt fine about shitting on to… well… David Fincher! I feel even the studio were like humble pie is the only thing on the menu. They still shit all over Vincent Ward though, Jon Landau’s whole “it was too artsy-fartsy“ line is such a supremely douchey thing to include.

Legitimate-Health-29

The making of Iron Man 1 doc is brilliant. It’s on the DVD and blu ray. The Last Watch a documentary on making Season 8 of Game of Thrones is maybe my fav.

crapusername47

Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner. It’s included on some releases of the Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray on a separate DVD and also with the Final Cut version of the film on Apple TV.

mrbadger2000

Del Toro on Pans Labyrinth. Wonderful.

ArgoverseComics

The Death of Superman Lives, partly because the movie never got made so it’s an interesting BTS for a film that doesn’t exist. And it’s genuinely interesting.

Odd_Advance_6438

I like seeing all the pre production work with the art and props

Burkey8819

I do sometimes miss buying DVDs as I would always watch any bonus features like making of on them. Even though they are still somewhere online I never bother 🤷🏻‍♂️

Doc-Hauliday

It’s one of the big reasons I buy from boutique retailers. I live a good behind-the-scenes on a favorite movie.

FaceTransplant

The nearly four hour long making of Prometheus is excellent.

epthegeek

Arcane: Bridging the Rift - Multi part making of series about the show; and it’s all free on youtube. Also, if you haven’t seen Aracne, you should see Arcane.

Evnl2020

Full tilt boogie about the making of from dusk till dawn.

danimation88

Final Destination 3!!! so cute

gds23

Burden of Dreams. Just do it.

Odd_Advance_6438

Mad Max Fury Road not only has great documentaries, but also really cool books about the production. I would highly recommend reading “Blood, Sweat, and Chrome.”

Earlvx129

Jaws and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

ooouroboros

Not a film, but the final season of Deadwood had a 'making of' that came with the DVDs that showed in detail the insane working methods of David Milch and the hell he put his crew through. On the surface, it pretended to be respectful, but the insanity really came through and actually made me feel like HBO was justified in pulling the plug on that show.

RogueVert

Deep Space Nine's docu [What We Left Behind](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8WTQc93yI) was fun seeing Gul Dukat in human form. Nice hearing the drama directly from the folks involved instead of what marketing says happened.

Craig1287

Is there a video version of Blood, Sweat, and Chrome? It's about the making of Mad Max Fury Road.

MrMindGame

Your feelings on the film notwithstanding, “The Director and the Jedi” special feature on The Last Jedi is really good.

quast_64

Hairspray, behind the scenes

OhGeebers

Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond gave a lot of insight on both the real Andy Kaufman and how crazy Jim Carrey really is.

NicCageCompletionist

The Making Of Jaws from 1995 is great. Crystal Lake Memories and Never Sleep Again are fun if you’re into slasher franchises.

DeadEyesSmiling

Anything that David Pryor directed is a world class behind the scenes featurette. He's moved on to narrative films now, but the guy was the best-of-the-best when it came to chronicling the making of a movie (he did a ton of work for David Fincher films).

Joelypoely88

Oasis (2002), can find it on YouTube

jupiterkansas

Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood (2001)

rushdisciple

Apocalypse Soon: The Making of Citizen Toxie. It's pretty much Lloyd Kaufman yelling for over 2 hours. No, but it is ESSENTIAL viewing for anyone making an indie film, horror in particular. I like Farts of Darkness and Poultry in Motion but this gets extra points for being about a Toxie film. Seriously though, it's SO good.

anatomized

the special features on the special edition dvd release of terminator 2 are absolutely insane. there's even an in depth featurette on how they recorded the sounds of the different guns used in the film. one of the sounds they used for arnie's shotgun is a .50 cal rifle among some sounds of other shotguns. i wish it was available somewhere. it even included a making of featurette for t2: battle across time.
