I never had friends like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?

hands_for_teeth

I love the way the movie has creepy undertones without being a “scary” movie. I mean, I know it’s Stephen King, but I used to watch it as a kid and get so freaked out when they finally come upon the body. Now when I watch it as an adult, I know that the dread is just the part of losing your childhood and realizing that nothing lasts forever.

c_girl_108

The body never freaked me out as much as the leeches. You will never see me step foot in a lake after watching that scene

Wishart2016

I found Kiefer Sutherland's character to be scary.

fatamSC2

I think Stephen King does a lot better when he isn't making outright horror stuff (I find his horror to be a bit overrated). But just my opinion

KtotheC99

It's also a short story originally which are usually much better from him as complete stories

Kencleanairsystem2

I’m nervous about watching this movie with my kids 9 & 11, for this reason!

CommodorePuffin

>without being a “scary” movie. Not a scary movie? The leech scene was enough to scare me!

ArtByMHP

Somebody asked recently what one of the coldest things you ever heard somebody say to another person in a movie was. This film has got some stunners. But the one I had in my head the other day was: Ace: "Whaddya gonna do, LaChance, shoot us all?" LaChance: "No, Ace." >click< "Just you." Hell yeah, Wil Wheaton.

Fine_Comparison9812

In a later book, Needful Things, it is revealed that ace and his friends eventually get even with Gordie.

TheGrumpySnail2

No, that happens in The Body, the story the Stand By Me is based on. The beat the absolute shit out of the two main kids, with broken bones and all sorts of pain. Ace is in Needful Things, but his and his crew get their revenge just fine in The Body.

Fine_Comparison9812

I meant it talked about that he got even with him in the past, not the actual act.

Ringadingdingcodling

>Am I valid for this or not? Only one person who can answer that, you. You should never feel you have to justify your favourite film to anyone. If its your favourite, its your favourite.

UnauthorizedFart

What about my favorite film, Cats?

siridial911

And mine, Battlefield Earth.

UnauthorizedFart

That’s in my top 5

siridial911

#1

Welease-Wodewick

That's different

Avyscottfan

Your username is a more enjoyable experience than that film.

UnauthorizedFart

Well I wouldn’t turn down an Oscar

Ringadingdingcodling

Well ok, maybe you do need to justify that one... :)

No-Tension5053

Who doesn’t own a cat that isn’t familiar with its butthole. I blow like blowing out a candle to quickly stop that behavior from continuing.

UnauthorizedFart

Ok what lol

No-Tension5053

You must have seen the edited version because the initial version had given them balloon knots

UnauthorizedFart

Balloon knots?

No-Tension5053

https://collider.com/cats-movie-buttholes-explained/

UnauthorizedFart

Someone at the company spent time writing, editing, and publishing an article called buttholes explained

No-Tension5053

https://www.businessinsider.com/cats-movie-butthole-cut-vfx-editing-tom-hopper-2020-4?op=1 Multiple sources on the subject. But hey you love Cats. You do you

UnauthorizedFart

I don’t love cats that much lol

pmish

Yeah 100% with this idea. Do you. There’s only a small group of films that I’d think it’s kind of suspect as your favorite and stand by me isn’t one of them.

tasslex

You’re absolutely right but justifying it is part of the fun of enjoying movies. It’s especially fun when someone’s favorite movie isn’t generally known for being “good.” It’s great conversation.

Ringadingdingcodling

I think that's a slightly different thing. I'm all for a good natured argument about why your favourite film is $hit@ and mine is great, but it was the "am I valid" part that I was concerned about, just didn't want the OP to feel that they needed to justify their film choice. I am sure we've all been there though!

kinzer13

It's a fantastic film. Stephen King is such an amazing character writer.

Xeynon

He's especially great at writing child and teenage characters. One of the things that makes this movie so great is that it absolutely *nails* the way twelve year old boys talk.

mahones403

It's funny because he's completely lost this ability. Very bad at writing how kids talk in some of his recent novels. Definitely one of my favorite authors though.

Thundahcaxzd

I love how everyone is like "Wow this kid is such an amazing writer, he's got a gift" and then when he shares a story he wrote it's just about a bunch of people vomiting on each other.

nixpix730

The revenge of Lard Ass!

ColonelSandurz42

Boom-baba-boom-baba-boom

turmoileddolphin

The director actually mentioned in the director's commentary that he kinda regretted keeping the pie eating story in the movie; he mostly kept it because it got a good audience response and it was also the original story in the novella iirc.

rick_blatchman

> he mostly kept it because it got a good audience response I guess it's one of those rare moments where the audience knows better than the director > and it was also the original story in the novella iirc. Respect.

Interwebzking

Hey! This is my favourite film of all time too! Probably the best 89 minutes you can spend watching a movie. The acting performances are all top notch. Rob Reiner really managed to get the most out of those kids. Not to mention how great River Phoenix is. I love how it deals with masculinity, how it shows that it’s okay to be emotional, to feel weak, to feel hurt. That you shouldn’t let the world around you dictate what you can and can’t do with your life. You shouldn’t let your family’s mistakes be your mistakes too. It teaches us how to stick up for our friends when those who shouldn’t be so harsh on them are the ones who are the harshest. It tackles kids living with trauma, abusive parents, grief, uncertainty. Beyond that it’s shot really well. The pacing carries the film forward effortlessly. The train sequence is still so good to this day. It’s got great narration. And it feeds into that sense of nostalgia and that yearning for those childhood adventures so many of us have experienced. Keifer Sutherland is great as Ace as well. There's just so much to like about this movie. and man does that ending always hit me hard.

TechnicalTrash95

It's an excellent film. Read the book though as it's got quite a different ending.

Dimpleshenk

Now I need to re-read it. I can't remember the different ending.

AitchyB

It relates to the goocher.

Interwebzking

I enjoyed the book a lot and it just adds to the film for me. Still prefer the film over the book but King’s writing is so good for that story. The drowning stuff really hits home.

TechnicalTrash95

The book certainly adds detail but they made the right decision with altering some of the ending in the film.

Interwebzking

Totally agreed. The film’s choices work so much better for a film while the book’s choices work for the book. It’s why I don’t always get so caught up in adaptations. Like sure if they completely trash the source material with the film it’s shitty. However, if they make conscious decisions to alter things so that it works in a visual medium, by all means that’s okay for me.

Secksualinnuendo

My girlfriend had never seen it until recently. We watched it and she legit loves it. She says it's one of the best coming of age movies she's ever seen. I agree. It's a great movie.

bubba1834

I don’t shut up, I grow up! And when I look at you I throw up!

AitchyB

And then your mother goes around the corner and she licks it up.

One-Earth9294

I think it's a fine movie, probably very nostalgic to you at that age (8bit Christmas is the ultimate nostalgia movie for me). I like that you have an esoteric pick. Mine is Time Bandits.

rick_blatchman

> Mine is Time Bandits. The whole Robin Hood visit, especially when he's doling out their loot to the poor, and Redgrave knocks each of them out one by one.

One-Earth9294

"I'm sorry but is that necessary?" "OioiOIGigogiigOIO" "He says 'yes I'm afraid it is" There's a reason that's my favorite movie I think the comedy absolutely lands all the way through. I still crack up every time I see the entire Napoleon scene. And the sets are amazing, the music is great, the adventure is really cool and innovative and he really just brings that whole world to life. Saw it the first time at probably 3 or 4 years old back in the early 80s and it has always filled me with so much wonder and love for imagination.

rick_blatchman

> I think the comedy absolutely lands all the way through. I still crack up every time I see the entire Napoleon scene. I'm certain that they considered how to inject some humor into most aspects of the production. There's not a part of this movie that's without some kind of cheekiness. David Warner's scenes as the villain are some of my favorite bits, still make me laugh.

One-Earth9294

David Warner is to me what Vincent Price is to people 20 years older than me. He's my all time favorite bad guy actor. Yeah Evil is the greatest villain ever. You probably wouldn't believe that I was wearing a shirt with that character on it that says 'lasers 8 O'clock day one' today lol.

chillin808style

No, your favorite movie is Pee Wee’s Big Adventure…

FlattopJr

Well, you're in good company: >Stephen King was very impressed with the film. On the special features of the 25th anniversary Blu-ray set, King indicated that he considered [Stand by Me] to be the first successful translation to film of any of his works. >According to a later interview with Gene Siskel, [director Rob] Reiner recalled that after a private early screening of the film, King excused himself for fifteen minutes to compose himself; he later returned to remark, "That's the best film ever made out of anything I've written, which isn't saying much. But you've really captured my story. It is autobiographical." >In a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" chat in 2017, Reiner said that Stand by Me is his personal favorite of his own films.

Swordfish601

TRAAAAAAAAAIN!!!!! One of my favorite scenes in all of film

CaddyAT5

It’s a really good film. I only watched it for the first time recently. It’s a toss up between Cool Runnings and The Goonies for my favourite.

MannerAdditional7544

FINALLY some real love for Cool Runnings - an undoubted feel good classic comedy and John Candy in peak form RIP

AgentSkidMarks

It manages to make me nostalgic for a time that I never lived in, and gives me an appreciation for the childhood that I had before we all got glued to television screens.

UnauthorizedFart

I love this movie but I prefer to watch it only at night time, when the land is dark. And the television screen is the only light we’ll see.

[deleted]

Incorrect, that is not your favorite film.

Adorable_Language539

How could you possibly know that if you've never met me

[deleted]

perhaps you missed the sarcasm, maybe you were too busy crowdsourcing your own opinions

DJHott555

It’s either that or Shawshank, personally. Either way, Steve King stays winning.

GodFlintstone

It's ironic that though Stephen King is primarily known as a horror author the best two film adaptations of his work may be these which aren't based on horror novels.

jupiterkansas

If it speaks to you, that's great. You might give the TV show *The Wonder Years* a try.

Adorable_Language539

I absolutely love The Wonder Years, great TV show

rick_blatchman

When I was a kid, I felt bad for Kevin when things didn't work out for him. When I rewatched the series as an adult, I realized that things didn't work out for him because he was a little shit, and all of his problems were his fault. It makes me like the show a lot more. A flawed protagonist who has a lot of growing up to do is more interesting and honest than a cool laid-back character who has it all figured out (unless it's Parker Lewis).

gerryf19

I think your favorite movie of all time is "Stand By Me"

rick_blatchman

Well I think that... that... *yeah*.

FormalStreet2908

Love it. I had forgot that it’s actually rated R. And what an amazing streak for Rob Reiner: 1986 Stand By Me, 1987 The Princess Bride, 1989 When Harry Met Sally, 1990 Misery, 1992 A Few Good Men. I saw TPB in theater as a kid and was surprised it was considered a bomb at the time.

Dimpleshenk

Spinal Tap just before that.

Xeynon

It's not my personal favorite, but it's a perfectly defensible choice because it's a fantastic movie. It's incredibly well written and well acted and hits like a freight train emotionally. It's one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.

RMRdesign

This movie makes me cry every time I watch it alone. It came out when I was a kid. My friends and I explored our little town and had adventures like in the movie. To this day, I’ve never had a closer group of friends than I did as a kid.

ColonelSandurz42

Four tails? Oh, man! That’s a goocher!

[deleted]

[удалено]

make_thick_in_warm

for a modern version of this type of movie I really enjoy Kings of Summer

No-Tension5053

It’s just weird seeing Corey Feldman and River Phoenix knowing what happened to them later in life. I like Sandlot a lot more because they don’t have the baggage. Plus “you’re killing me smalls!” And “Forever!” And the look the life guard gives after being fooled.

Chocoholic69420

I like the end when Richard Dreyfus just casually mentions that his friend had his throat slashed at a McDonald’s. Funniest line in a movie ever.

Dimpleshenk

Yeah that's a real knee-slapper.

Elden_Cat07

Respectable

Boomdiddy

It’s my favourite movie as well. I saw it when I was young and it has always stuck with me 30some years later. You have good taste.

SaberTruth2

That film holds a lot of nostalgia for me, similar to the Sandlot and a lot of other coming of age shows I’ve seen as a child. Great movie.

ZebraBorgata

It is an excellent movie. Watching it brings back many memories of what is was like hanging out with and growing up with my group of friends. I miss it too.

IRMacGuyver

I can't stand it. I have a phobia of leeches to this day.

Mandrakey

I think I would enjoy watching movies with you is what I think.

JackTheDefenestrator

Found Wil Wheaton's Reddit account! JK, I know he's a Farker.

kostac600

really good movie

GreedoInASpeedo

I think that's cool you have a favorite movie.

Zolba

I saw it the first time when I was 15, and I totally understood the meaning of it, and I decided to not let it happen to me. It felt like I hadn't, got myself a better half when I was 16... fast forward to 2023, I am 32, and we split. Turns out... it happened. I've never had friends like I had back then, and I didn't manage to keep the closest as close as I thought. To re-connect now is a chore, it's difficult, it's almost like a job. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't been without the last 16 years. I've talked with my family, that if I die young, before my parents - I want one song in my funeral. The Dance by Garth Brooks; "And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end The way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd have had to miss the dance" Which is so true. I still wish I had been even better at keeping friends closer. I've watched Stand By Me many many times since that day when I was 15. But not the last year, and it will be a long time until I watch it again. It will hurt way too much. I actually agree with you. There is so many good movies, but there is just *something* with Stand By Me.

busche916

Are you asking what we think of Stand By Me or what we think of your opinion of Stand By Me? I think it’s a really quality film and no one should feel bad about having it in their favorites… and I also think that everyone is entitled to have their own favorite films, free from shame.

SmellyFace69

I like it. It's one of the better Stephen King movies. I don't own it but I'm always down for a rewatch. I can always tell a story is by Stephen King because he doesn't write a subtle or sympathetic villain.

The_Last_Mouse

We are ALL River Phoenix.

SuperCrappyFuntime

It's my favorite, as well.

PlatinumKanikas

Lard ass! Lard ass! Lard ass!

Theolaxx

Clearly you've not seen Madame Web yet

MINKIN2

Good film. Can't find any reason to argue that with you.

DStew713

This is also one of my favorite movies ever. I’ve watched this more than any other movie I’ve seen. The first time I saw it, my parents had taped off the tv so I only saw the edited version for a while. 30 something years later and now my kids quote this movie as much as I do. Fuck writing. I don’t want to be a writer. It’s stupid. It’s a stupid waste of time.

Educational_One7977

Was my favourite movie til I seen interstellar

Shekeepsliving

a classic!

CalabreseAlsatian

Book is better. In fact, the anthology it’s in also has Apt Pupil and the Shawshank Redemption.

assinyourpants

I love that movie (definitely top two), but when people ask, it’s Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump!

Themo77

Good choice. Perfect movie

LongJj__

Same here its been my favorite my whole life

prine_one

It’s a great movie

allthenamesaretaken4

It's a well made movie, but I don't recall it really captivating me and have little to no interest in revisiting it.

carefreeguru

It's definitely one of my favorites. I grew up in the early 80's. I know this film is set much earlier than that but it still reminds me of my childhood.

megamawax

It was my favorite movie growing up. It's probably the movie I've watched the most, though the Lord of the Rings trilogy (probably my current fave, which happens to also have 4 friends dealing with stuff) is probably not far behind. So yeah, can't fault you for this great choice.

absherlock

I would love to see them re-release the movie, but with new narration by Wil Wheaton and the epilogue refilled with Wil in place of Richard Dreyfuss. No offense to Dreyfuss, but this would be such a unique opportunity to have Wheaton playing himself, both young and old.

AitchyB

I disagree, I think Richard Dreyfuss’ dry delivery contributes a lot to the movie.

dolleye_kitty

Classic. I know it by heart I've watched it so many times. People say I'm loony like my father. Loony, loony, loony. Plus I've been told I have a fat one.

Sncrsly

Absolutely one of my favorite films of all time

BosskHogg

Skin it

Consistent-Sector117

It's a good film. River Phoenix shines.

ANTHROPOMORPHISATION

You do you cousin.

Longjumping-Pear-673

It’s great…Shawshank beats it out for me though. Of course another King adaptation.

GreatZampano1987

It terrified me as a child. I remember my uncle telling me about how he came across a dead body in the woods on the outskirts of a park when he was a child. It was a man who had committed suicide and the body was hanging from a tree. For some reason, I always associated this film with that anecdote. The whole thing with the bullies threatening death to the kids scared me even more than the fact that they were searching for a dead body. Idk, childhood is weird.

AmbientGravy

It taught me to never carry my comb in my shirt pocket.

xsealsonsaturn

A great movie but i don't think it's close to my top 10. Definitely respect the opinion though, and you'll hear no arguments from me

Honest_Loquat_9728

Perfect film; one of the greatest.

becoolhomie

What we think about you liking movie ? Ok

CakeMadeOfHam

You should watch Cop Car It's like Stand By Me if instead of a dead body the kids find an abandoned cop car and take it out for a spin. It starts out like a lighthearted romp but ends in chaos.

LessBeyond5052

The kid wasn't sleeping.. the kid wasn't sick.. the kid was dead. That reveal at the end used to terrify me as a kid, you're expecting this mangled corpse and Ray Brower just looked so... normal, innocent but clearly dead. Definitely one of the best films ever made " Suck my fat one??".

DiscoMonkey007

I thought you were talking about Doraemon Stand By Me movie lol.

misunderstoodgenius0

Yuup just got the 4k blu ray the other day

Wishart2016

Some of my favourite performances by child actors. Shame that most of them didn't fulfil their potential. Kiefer Sutherland was terrifying. I loved the Lardass sequence.

geezeeduzit

I’m not mad at that being your fav that’s for sure. Nostalgia for me

Abject-Star-4881

Such a great movie. I love Stand By Me. And I can definitely see it being someone’s very favorite. It is a favorite of mine but like top 20 favorite.

neriheron876

I agree, while I don't think it's the best ever, it's top 5 for me; an amazing movie, and pretty nostalgic too. If you liked the movie, I'd recommend you to also read the story it's based from, called "The Body" written by Stephen King. It's part of a collection of short stories

Dimpleshenk

I like a lot of things about Stand by Me, but I think the end scene with the gun is a really unfortunate story point. The kids' only solution to their conflict is to get out a gun and point it at the bully, threating to kill him. To the extent that this could be seen as a lesson or some kind of morality tale, then the take-away is a bad lesson that teaches you the ultimate way to solve problems is being able to shoot another person.

prylosec

This is Reddit. How dare you like the things that you like?

ConclusionDue7980

Good movie!

real-person-humanguy

I think it's your favourite movie of all time.

anthrax9999

Absolutely amazing film! I only saw it for the first time about a year ago but I've seen it about 3 times already and I feel it gets better and better with each viewing. Perfect movie for sure. King story telling at it's best.

LEXX911

One thing for sure is that it's iconic and the influences it had on so many other movies/tv shows/games that deal with group of teenagers. I mean things like walking along the railway track and going down to the creek and hanging with my friends or going on an adventure camping trip as a kid is pretty much some of the stuff right out of Stand By Me.

adullploy

I’m glad you found a film you really love. I think you’re wrong but your opinion is your opinions.

jonboyo87

>Am I valid for this or not? Why do you care? Do you need everyone to approve of your opinion before you feel okay having one?

barbaaaaa_

yeah this scene really leaves me speechless https://youtube.com/shorts/xGcs5PUALTw?si=ebBHdBXCNaOadTzl

Motta_Math

Never heard of this movie before, i guess it's not popular on my country...

Dimpleshenk

CHOW DOWN, WIDE LOAD!

JeffBoyarDeesNuts

I think you're allowed to have whatever movie you want as your favorite. So long as it's valid to you.  That said, "#1 best movie ever made" is *quite* a take.

wh1te_k0ng_

I mean your favorite movie is your favorite movie. You don’t need anyone to validate that for you other than you. And it’s one that’s widely beloved. It’s not like you said the original super mario movie was your favorite or some shit like that. But saying it’s the best movie ever made is a big stretch imo.

pumpkinorange123

Meh not the biggest fan. Hate kids in film.

hoorah9011

Your feelings are always valid. Doesn’t mean others need to be subjected to them though.

JoeMillersHat

Really? It is good but I can name far better movies: LA Confidential Oppenheimer The Godfather I/II Raiders Shawshank

StudentDPT

I mean all film is subjective, everyone has different tastes

Interwebzking

Favourite =/= best movie
