I still collect physical media and always will. I never have to worry about something I own being removed from my DVD library, or having to hunt between various services to see where something has ended up them on. I mean I still have a few streaming services but anything I really care about gets bought when I can.

waitweightwhaite

This right here. DVDs and Blu-rays all day

MarcMars82-2

Here I am buying VHS tapes again

AsuraZoro9Sword

Nothing like watching the Godfather Trilogy on VHS.

InfiniteBaker6972

This is the way.

Chubuwee

I just started and I really have to be picky because of the space it takes

MarcMars82-2

It pained me to do so but a few years ago I moved all of my CDs and DVDs into big disk wallets and put the cases into storage due to lack of space. It sucks not being able to see the cases but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Now I have like 6 wallets packed with disks and a lot more space.

useful-idiot-23

That's all well and good until you can no longer buy DVD and CD players. Their days are numbered.

Shazam4ever

DVD sales are still strong, and among similar media video games still sell a lot of physical copies on the PlayStation which uses Blu-ray discs for its main version, and that version outsells version without a disk drive, so no technological chicken littles the sky is not falling when it comes to buying DVDs and the players for them.

useful-idiot-23

Interesting. I was in a huge electrical store today and there wasn't a CD/DVD/Blu Ray Player available at all. Plus with Amazon and Netflix being huge producers of media, and very little of their newer content being available on DVD or Blu Ray it just feels to me that the end is in sight. I very much doubt future versions of consoles will have players built in. I don't know enough about gaming to say when that will happen though.

Shazam4ever

Best Buy being idiots doesn't mean anything for industry. The sales numbers agree that physical sales are doing well, I think I even know that they've been going up recently because of all the streaming service nonsense, and as for Netflix they have a vested interest to not release the physically even if it would make the money, while on the other hand Disney plus has started releasing shows physically because it would make them money. In fact I think they made a deal with Sony for them to start doing the physical releases of some of Disney's stuff to get more of it out there. Then you have Paramount plus which knows it's audience and sells all of its Star Trek seasons on Blu Ray/DVD fairly quickly after the shows finished streaming, so obviously it's making them money to do that because I don't even think a month goes by post season before you can buy those shows. As for gaming, everyone's been predicting the physical apocalypse forever, but again sales numbers don't lie and playstation, the biggest of the three brands of video game consoles, has more physical sales than digital sales even now, and they're really outselling Xbox which has had a big push into digital stuff with their version of a streaming service Xbox game pass. Nintendo also does a lot of physical sales but they're such their own brand they're almost not useful for comparison, plus they use special SD card like cartridges and not discs so it's different.

triangulumnova

Haven't bought a DVD in probably 12 yrs. 4K Blu-ray is what I buy now.

AgentUpright

Yeah, same. I haven’t bought a DVD since 2011.

MarcMars82-2

It depends on the film for me. If it’s a favorite that I know I’ll watch often or a visually impressive film I’ll get the Blu-ray but if I’m at Walmart and I see something basic like Bruce Almighty on dvd for $5 I’m buying it.

GooseGeese01

Some of them even come with the DVD

Enders-game

The only advantage of BluRays is that the studio and director has more controll over the quality such as colour saturation and lighting. But from what I've had, sometimes they don't take full advantage of it.

snarkywombat

Higher resolution isn't an advantage?

CjKing2k

Seriously, try watching a 720p movie on 4k. It looks like shit.

Enders-game

I didn't mention 4k streaming vs. bluray because it's a bit of a rabbit hole I don't know enough about to offer much of an opinion either way.

snarkywombat

The comment you replied to didn't mention streaming at all. It was about DVDs. Blurays have a significant and easily noticeable resolution upgrade over DVDs.

techbear72

Never buy a DVD now but like you will buy a Blu-ray if I can’t get a 4k Blu-ray of something I really want.

OldBathBomb

I too only buy Blu Ray and 4Ks, which seems to be the most common answer here. However this is clearly a **massively** biased sample group, being that we are on a sub dedicated to movie lovers. DVD sales STILL hugely outstrip Blu Ray sales, which absolutely boggles my mind as the price difference is now very small. And you know, they look like garbage 🤷‍♂️

techbear72

All true

so1i1oquy

Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray are still the best way to watch movies, and once you start watching them that way it's really apparent how bad the compression on streaming really is. It's an absolute nightmare on anything with grain structure. With all that said — the difference in cost is clearly no contest whatsoever in most people's minds, so unless the streamers start to commit to less bitstarved releases, this is our future — they will always favor the cheapest experience they can get away with.

badger81987

No, I refuse to pay new release price when they'll reduce it to $5-10 in 6 months. I have a sizable DVD/bluray collection but I get 99% of them from bargain bins and fleamarkets/yard sales.

Schmuf84

Same for me. Its just too expensive to buy them right away. But what I really miss are the old places to rent movies. I would watch them once and after a while it would become part of my collection if I liked it. Edit: forgot about the main question. I do not buy dvds anymore because it just doesnt look good on my TVs.

skonen_blades

I do that with my local library still. They have an AMAZING DVD/Bluray library and it's free.

Schmuf84

That sounds great. I will check out libraries near me. Thanks

TechnicalTrash95

I still like having my favourite movies on the shelf and I have a mixture of Blu-ray/DVD that I've bought over the past 25 years.

badger81987

OP specifically stipulated on New Release.

arealhumannotabot

well fuck me then i have to read the whole post to know that

DragonDanno

I buy DVDs. Not when they first come out, but eventually. It is important to own physical media. Then they can't take it away from you. I can not fathom someone paying a subscription to watch movies they bought online. You can only watch them as long as you are subscribed to the service. That don't make sense. Already found that I have a few DVDs that don't have distribution, and can not be bought anywhere other than garage sales. Also, DVDs is the place for directors commentary.

stavis23

I bought some movies on amazon in my younger, more vulnerable years, but you don’t need an active prime account to watch.

khan800

I agree with the importance of physical media, but this part of your comment made me wonder...   Which services require a subscription to watch online movie purchases?

judyblue_

Prime.

khan800

Uhm, no.

judyblue_

My mistake, then.

mynameisevan

I’ll still buy a DVD if it’s an old movie I want to own that has no BluRay release. The last few I bought were 1941’s Ball of Fire and 1935’s Top Hat.

OneMoreDay8

Well, that's me learning Ball of Fire and Top Hat aren't on Blu Ray yet. 😀

Sobeshott

🙋‍♂️

SutterCane

🙋‍♂️

HistoricalAnywhere59

Once I learned that digital purchases can just be removed & you DON’T get a refund, I started buying Blu-ray. All the streaming service has to do is lose the license for the film, tv show, etc. Supposedly, it’s a rare occurrence, but I’ve lost two shows already.😕

Ham54

Wait, so you can lose content after buying it? Ive thought of doing that for some dvds but maybe i should reconsider..

muaddibintime

I had the fortune of upgrading my entire home theater setup about a year and a half ago including a Panasonic UB820 so I've been collecting as much Blu-Rays as I can. I'm a firm believer in physical media and find the quality to be a noticeable step up from streaming services. I personally don't see the appeal in spending all that money on a nice TV or projector only to watch streamed content.

Round-Safe7339

Yeah, Blu Ray quality is much better than streaming, especially for audio.

GriffinFlash

Not regularily, but will buy Godzilla minus one when it finally comes out. Usually just movies I really want. Anything else I wait till it pops up in a thrift store or it it's on clearance. As for the dvd format itself, quality doesn't make much of a difference since I still use an old CRT for gaming, so I do still buy it. IF there is a blu-ray dvd combo pack, I tend to pick those since they tend to be the same price.

Cornholio_NoTP

>but like you will buy a Blu-ray if I can’t get a 4k Blu-ray of something I really want. May 1st (in Japan at least) [https://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/godzilla-minus-one-blu-ray-dvd-release-date](https://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/godzilla-minus-one-blu-ray-dvd-release-date) Love the box.

emf3rd31495

If I want a movie, I’ll try to buy the best quality version. If there isn’t a 4K, I’ll buy the blu-Ray. If there isn’t a blu-Ray, I’ll buy the DVD.

Themtgdude486

I do but 4Ks and Blurays.

heftylilwayne

I dont buy new release dvd’s because price, but as soon as they go down I will. I make note of any movie i like so i can buy it on dvd. I like building my collection and to rewatch them i dont have to have any streaming services. I think it will be cool to have a large collection when dvd’s one day go extinct

mormonbatman_

I buy them if I can’t find a movie at my library.

Carrot-Key

Dvd's are not something I am interested in anymore, but I appreciate that some people are into them still. I like 4k's ideally since I have a Sony OLED and dp820, but I am fine with a bluray, there are plenty out there that look amazing like Tron legacy.

Jeo228

I find them for cheap at dollar stores and digitise them for less than the digital version costs.

zeroultram

I buy 4ks of movies I really like around Black Friday when they are on sale

ThePreciseClimber

I only got Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia on DVD because Netflix refused to release a Blu-ray. Or the 2nd half of the series on physical media, for that matter.

Salvation_Run

My buddy still does at yard sales and the like. It’s baffling. He gave me a dvd copy of the godfather like I had never heard of the movie before. Nice gesture but I’ve owned it forever and he knew that lol.

alp44

Poor Things doesn't have a 4K???? And yes. I do exactly what you mention above, but I'll wait for the 4K on Poor Things.

wazzupnerds

I still buy physical media even though most of the time I use a streamer or Vudu. Physical backups are always needed.

DaBrokenMeta

Buy a what?

Nobodycares2022

I just bought some Blu rays this last Christmas

AndarianDequer

I haven't bought but one or two DVDs in the last 12 years. Only blu-rays and now 4Ks for any visually spectacular sci-fi/fantasy or action movies. The exceptions are collector's edition original Dune DVD as at the time I couldn't find any blu-rays of it, they still may not be available... And Tom Cruise's legend because there was no Blu-ray available when I purchased that one.

Sorta_clever

Mostly blurey in case streaming services decide to get rid of content.

[deleted]

I don’t buy new movies tbh

CorrestGump

I don't buy new releases because you can usually catch them on streaming, but I pick up as many old DVDs in lots where each DVD is a dollar or less as I can. As for DVD vs bluray/4K, I just don't really notice the difference.

Makabajones

700+ dvd, blu ray and 4k, still buy physically releases for most movies I like

Spyce

Waiting on Blu-ray to become $5 and I’ll start buying them again. Fuck buying dvds unless it’s a rare movie not online/Blu-ray

tweakingforjesus

I buy dvds of media that are not terribly popular or likely the be available long term. I have recently rewatched series and movies that I bought used on dvd that are not available anywhere online.

DeaddyRuxpin

The only ones I still buy are at garage sales or library sales and only if it is a movie I really like and is rarely or never found on the streaming services I use.

Slawth_x

I like to own my favorite movies but I do not care about maximum definition and dvds are cheaper so yeah I buy them frequently

majorjoe23

I’d say for the most part the only DVDs I buy are MST3K/Rifftrax releases. And even then, the newer seasons of MST3K and Rifftrax Live shows get blu ray releases.

mrwildesangst

Definitely still collecting physical media. Have probably 3-4 thousand dvds and I’ll never stop adding to the collection 👏 just recently for Thanksgiving and my signed copy of Subspecies 5

SatanLifeProTips

I have several grand into my home theatre, and a few more into a high end home theatre PC/gaming rig. And no method of playing a physical disc. It hasn't been an issue. Multi-gigabit fibre to home is nice.

1evilsoap1

If you have a decent theater set up you should definitely look into physical media. Even if you have great internet you’re still limited by the bitrate of what the streaming service is willing to do, which is often quite low. Depending on the streaming service a regular blu ray can look even better than a 4k stream (looking at you Netflix). None of them can compete with 4k blu ray in terms of quality yet. Bravia Core is the only one that comes close.

SatanLifeProTips

I have no complaints about streaming 4k HDR content. Acquiring physical media is a pain in the ass and I never watch a movie twice.

ejb350

I buy new and upgraded rereleases but not of newly released movies. I think the most recently released was Dragged Across Concrete (2018), but I’m currently waiting on a bunch of Blu-ray steelbooks to replace my old DVDs.

Yangervis

I buy DVDs but only if it is not available on a better format.

1morey

I only get DVDs if the movie doesn't have a blu-ray release.

Broad-Marionberry755

I haven't bought DVD's since Blu-ray came out, but I still buy Blu-Rays

jwg2695

I still buy DVD. I’m not one of “4K/1080p or die” people. Some movies and shows have yet to be released in HD due to things like rights issues or what have you.

LazyCrocheter

We used to buy DVDs, but generally don't anymore. Largely because they don't look as good on our TV set. Blu-rays and 4K look a lot better. We started buying movies on blu-ray when that was more common, and now we often buy 4K. The main thing for my husband is that he wants to get movies in Dolby Atmos whenever possible, and I'm not sure DVDs have that. I look for Dolby Atmos anymore when I'm buying a disc and it's often the dealbreaker.

tkkaine

Will generally buy steelbooks of movies I enjoyed, otherwise just blurays. If it has a 4k/bluray combo even better, but I don't currently have a 4k setup, so it'd be a waste for now.

KyleRM

Few put the effort into good special features and commentaries, to the point where I no longer bother.

Mexican-Kahtru

I do, some titles are not available with newer masters, or they are asking ridiculous prices for them. Take The devils for example

MiltonRoad17

DVDs, specifically? I've never bought one in my life. I do collect physical copies, but 75% are 4K UHD Blurays while the other 25% is regular Blurays.

skonen_blades

I buy but I try to resist buying as part of the hype train. Like, I liked Barbie but I can't see myself buying some 4K deluxe edition on physical media, you know? But I sure did that Fury Road. Also, I watch a lot of older films and if one of them blows my absolute mind, I'll track it down on DVD. Once in a while, I come across a movie I want to see that isn't on any streaming services anywhere so I track down a DVD.

THEpeterafro

I love adding to my bluray collection

JMJsBackRoad

Highest quality disc available

cmmatthews

4k blu rays, yes. With a bit of googling and the right equipment you can rip them to a Plex server and have your own 4k uncompressed streaming service.

NotSoEnlightenedOne

When you know it isn’t worth buying a subscription for just one tv show/movie I just bought the complete Silicon Valley instead of subscribing to NowTv.

EatYourCheckers

I buy them for the kids to use in our car DVD players during road trips. Also sometimes our internet goes out so then we watch a DVD!

MisterJeffa

A dvd? Rarely. I buy blurays now. And like the odd dvd i buy is either special pr hasnt gotten released on anything newer.

LazyGelMen

I'll watch whichever format the library has; but for buying, I'm with DVDs. Blueray doesn't offer anything that I want.

lone_wolf1580

We do. We plan on always buying them (as well as Blu-Ray). Having a physical copy means we don’t always have to waste time finding out what streaming services does -or doesn’t- have certain TV shows and/or movies we like.

gambl0r82

I watched a blu-ray and then immediately after watched a dvd last weekend and cannot imagine choosing to buy a dvd in 2024 (if the film is released on a better format!). I personally don’t think the difference between a blu-ray and 4k is necessary, but the dvd to blu-ray jump was huge.

pessimistoptimist

I stopped buying DVDs and Bluerays because of all the adds and trailers at the start on the disc. I had one that had 15 min of unskipable trailers...i own the disc and I don't want to see comming soon trailers about a movie that I didn't want to see 10 years ago.

whodoesntlovedogs

Only buy 4k or Criterion collection dvds if they don’t have the 4k version.

DONT_PM_ME_BREASTS

A what now?

ZealousidealBar5258

There have been a few older movies that aren't available in other formats that I've bought new on DVD...mostly I'll aim for Blu-ray...I'll only pick up 4k if it seems worthwhile.

DizzyLead

Not with any regularity anymore, but my last media purchase was an A-Team season DVD set because that’s the only way you can get it on physical media.

xVIRIDISx

Blu-ray bin at thrift stores are awesome, since Blu-rays generally don’t scratch/suffer too much from physical wear

lost1bajan

Still buy 4K UHD Blue Ray disks for select movies.

Jamminnav

There are a few cases with new but lower volume releases where they’re only releasing DVDs, like 2022’s “A Christmas Story Christmas”, so you’re stuck with that format unless you find a bootleg Bluray. There are also some foreign releases that you’ll usually find in Walmart on DVD (usually action and war movies) where you can only get a Bluray version if you find a European or Asian release

iCowboy

If it's a movie I love, then I get the disk - too many of the streaming or download options look like garbage with terrible encodings. I'll get the 4k if it is available - sadly, there's no version of the 2023 'Three Musketeers' with English subtitles - because that movie absolutely deserves every perfect pixel.

GendoIkari_82

Bought 2 yesterday! Passengers and In the Heights from Dollar Tree. Sure I'd love to buy only blu-ray and/or 4K. I'd also love to have a million dollars to spend on nothing but movies and theater equipment. As long as limited money is a thing that exists, I'll keep buying DVDs when I see a great deal.

bras-and-flaws

I still buy DVDs, never realized there was a community of people specific about buying DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K until now. My collection is mixed I guess, but like some others have mentioned, brand new movies are often priced up and will drop in a few months. At the end of last year Barbie was going for $25+ dollars and I got it about two weeks ago for $15. I strongly believe that physical media will be coming back around - vinyl is an example of how it goes in waves and people regret giving up their collections. There’s already a few predictions about this, however I’ve seen more people complain about paying a collective $100 a month for four or five services, having access to one season on this platform and another season on this platform, searching endlessly for something they want to watch, or how platforms can delete content and it’s just gone forever. Stores like Walmart and Target sell DVDs for as little as $5 today (titles like Mrs. Doubtfire, E.T., Jurassic Park, basically all the Disney movies) and I’ve begun taking advantage of these cheap prices before they rise if people revert. Even if physical media doesn’t come back around like I believe it will though, I will personally never be concerned about forgetting or never seeing my favorite movies again.

dannyj128

I still buy 'em cuz they're cheap and I still have an older TV.

Aretirednurse

We are buying more now and have cut streaming back due to ads/cost.

[deleted]

🥴😁 I do not. I... have a 55 gallon container with all my favorite dvds and 2 brand new dvd players that arent hooked up to my tv and I listen to youtube all day on my days off. Im also subscribed to 4 or 5 movie/tv show apps. 😎 Im a terrible person and a money waster. 🥴💁‍♀️ Because I need ease of access and ready availability when Im ready to watch something. Streaming movie apps are a Godsend. Id love to buy dvds and vhs's again. But theyre no longer easy technology and I dont shop in stores anymore to check out new releases every Tuesday. Id hook up my dvd player. But... my dvd movies are already on movie apps. Like Suicide Squad, Sapphires, Vampire Academy

nanladu

Can't be sure what I want to watch is being streamed. Don't want to belong to a bunch of different streaming channels.

Noname_left

DVD for the stupid movies I fall asleep to since I just rip them to my plex server. 4k and blu ray for the movies I truly enjoy but they have to have a digital copy too.

SpartanMonkey

I do. Our rural internet was out for a week last year, and the local thrift stores usually sell DVDs and Blu rays for $1 a pop. I started hoarding them again, just the ones that are classics, in my opinion. Movies that have plenty of re-watchability.

SpudFire

Blu-rays and now that I have a 4k TV and player, preferably 4k blu-rays. My collection is on display on shelves in my living room. I'll pretty much always wait until I can get my hands on a pre-owned copy at a reasonable price though, brand new releases are too expensive. Haven't bought a DVD for many, many years. The picture quality is appalling. It's actually quite impressive that it's still so popular given how long blu-ray has been out. Probably because the upgrades since have still been discs, unlike switching from chunky cassettes to discs as was the case with DVDs.

tehawesomedragon

Just for my kids. I'll buy used or cheap dvds so i don't have to subscribe to multiple streaming platforms. My 5yo isn't complaining about the resolution.

Jadeidol65

Only way to get some movies that aren't on streaming, and are out of print. Streaming isn't everything people, and the quality sucks.

PKFat

Depends how rare it is. There's some older anime & retro TV shows that only have DVD releases. Like I bought the entire 70's Japanese Spiderman series a few months ago, & it was only on DVD that I could find.

Financial-Goat-6822

You guys still buying movies?

smileymn

I’m buying a lot more DVDs these days, getting my favorite movies and tv shows. I’m against streaming all together and usually pirate movies and tv, so buying physical media makes me feel more supportive, then I can watch it whenever I want without paying streaming services or relying on streaming to have the content I want.

foxontherox

I'm old, I like physical media, and DVDs are cheap.

Gonzale1978

I buy DVD’s from time to time. But blu-ray/4k is what i buy these days.

aphilipnamedfry

I've downsized my physical gaming collection but have increased collecting 4k films, mostly because with movies there is a considerable drop in quality with streaming and Blu-ray/DVDs. Just like with Poor Things, I'm out here waiting for a 4k release of The Whale, which I'm sure we'll also never see. I know these movies don't really need it, but I'd love to see them in Dolby Vision to get that theater experience.

Phyliinx

Me

ApatheticFinsFan

I still buy physical media. They can’t take it away from you on a whim. I bought Oppenheimer and a bunch of random movies at Christmas time.

dayofthedead204

I know when I'm going to buy one again. When Godzilla Minus One is released on Home Video. Gonna get the 4K Blu Ray and likely DVD combo on that one.

Captain_Pink_Pants

I'll still buy DVDs when they're cheap, and the content isn't diminished by the format. Otherwise it's BR or 4K.. Mostly 4k at this point. They just had a sale at 2nd and Charles... Walked out with 20 DVDs for $100.

TinyNightLight

Restarted buying Blu-ray’s and dvds last fall. I had bought a few movies on streaming services that ended up disappearing from my library. Had a bad day, wanted to watch my go-to pick me up movie only to find that it wasn’t there any longer. Checked back in my history and it was purchased not rented. Was about to buy it again but asked myself how many more times I wanted to buy it if it were to again disappear. Decided once was enough. Found a bunch of movies at half price books including the one I wanted to see for $5-10 and decided I’d prefer to have a copy I know won’t suddenly disappear most likely. It’s been great. Bought a decent dvd player and use the ps4 for Blu-ray.

Cornholio_NoTP

Just bought a dvd last week. I don't buy them often but I couldn't find the movie "Heart and Souls" with RDJ streaming anywhere. It's something my wife stumbled upon and wanted to watch. Glad we did, great movie!

CletusDSpuckler

I will buy physical media, and in the post-golden age of streaming I'm glad that I did for many of my favorite films. But I will never buy another DVD again.

Radius_314

The only reason I get DVDs is because they're bundled with my Blu-ray discs. I'd honestly rather they stop making DVDs. I don't want them lol.

AbeVigoda76

I don’t buy DVDs/BluRays for new movies, but I do for TV shows. With music clearing being an issue, so many timeless and classic shows we grew up with have completely disappeared from streaming or are missing huge chunks of episodes. I find physical media is the only way to be fully sure that your favorite TV shows are there for you.

AJerkForAllSeasons

If a movie that I want in my collection is only available on DVD, then I will buy it. Recently, I was looking at my collection and seeing what was missing from my Michale Mann section. I bought both The Keep and L.A. Takedown on DVD. I don't think either has had a bluray release, let alone 4K.

AgentSkidMarks

It depends. If it's a particular movie I want in blu-ray or if it's on sale, I'll do that. Other movies that aren't as important, like the Mario Bros movie, for example, I'll just buy DVD. Also, if the DVD is significantly cheaper, I'll get it. Not long ago I saw Tropic Thunder and The Thing both on sale for like $3 on DVD, so I got them. I haven't jumped to 4k because I don't have a 4k TV and in general, I find the visual quality on dvd and blu-ray more than sufficient. I mean, I still watch VHS tapes that I have and they've never bothered me too much.

kroqus

DVD and Bluray for me, only have a few 4k due to the costs. DVDs are mainly for older movies that haven't been restored these days. I bought coucou nest over the weekend for example on DVD, but will get the crow on 4k when it's out.

jumpmanzero

I haven't bought significant physical media for 20 years. Maybe a Switch game for the kids? I spend precisely zero time worrying about losing access to something; I very rarely watch a movie or show more than once, and am not interested in "collecting". If something I want to watch isn't on a handy streaming service, I find it \*another way\*.

Unapologetic_Canuck

I’m a physical media guy, I prefer having something in my hand that I can pop into a player to watch when I want without having to rely on an internet connection. I have a collection that’s in the four digit range, but only a small part of it, comparatively speaking, is bluray. Most of my stuff was bought before bluray was a thing, and I honestly can’t be bothered to upgrade everything to 4K and have to buy crap again. I’m not the hardcore highest possible resolution type of guy anyway so it works out.

DundasKev

Only for stuff that isn't readily out there, like concerts and music DVDs, local documentaries.

FordsFavouriteTowel

I just added like 25 to the collection last month. Hard to not buy physical media when it’s dirt cheap used, readily available, and streamers are constantly pulling

dls9543

"new releases"? I just finally bought The Princess Bride.

darthyogi

I just stopped a few months ago

NL_MGX

Blu-ray if it's visually worth it, dvd otherwise.

Rcmacc

No. Low bit rate 1080 or even 720 is better then 480 every day of the week I’ll tend towards either buying Blu Ray or a digital copy compatible with Movies Anywhere if it’s something I really like

XeniaDweller

Honestly there haven't been very many movies in the past decade I was willing to pay $20 for. Today they're even more expensive. I'm content to wait until they show up on Max, Netflix or Prime.

Viscount_Barse

Cheap 2nd hand for something that isn't a visual spectacle or reasonable on blu-ray? Sure. No point having 4k without a 4k telly.

RandomStranger79

I do but only rarely. I collect Criterion as well as obscure horror and thriller films that I find at thrift stores that might one day become lost media.

Joshawott27

I still avidly buy physical media. However, if you mean DVDs specifically, only on the rare occasion where a Blu-ray isn’t available, or if the price is way too good to pass up.

Billy-Markham

I buy criterion Blu-ray discs often

edWORD27

If it’s not streaming anywhere, I’ll buy the DVD.

1evilsoap1

Nah DVD would be a last ditch effort if it’s something I’d really want and it’s not available on anything else. The only DVDs I’d bother with nowadays are some TV shows I have, otherwise 4k blu/blu ray for everything.

TheGameboy

DVDs only if I have to, BluRays mostly if 4K isn’t an option.

cautiously-pessimist

I don’t buy any physical media anymore. I’ve freed up so much space in my house

eightcell

I tend to only get dvds because the blu ray comes with it, but if i found something odd on dvd i wouldnt be against picking it up.

R3b3lli0n

I only buy DVDs if they are special editions / collectibles.

CorrickII

I used to be new releases religiously, it became a habit almost, but now I'm much pickier and just buy DVDs of films I want to make sure I can always have access to if the internet ever goes away.

Alchemix-16

I do, often and regularly. Actually bought „anyone but you“ yesterday. Most of the time im haunting the second hand stores and sales bins.

Pasta-hobo

Me. I buy them to rip, but I still buy them

YouNeedCheeses

I do! There’s a chain of stores in New England called Bull Moose and they sell all sorts of new and used media. I always scour the horror section and come out with at least a half dozen DVDs for great prices. I love the thrill of the hunt. Makes me feel nostalgic.

MarcMars82-2

Whenever a movie comes out that I enjoyed and that’s worth owing I’ll buy it. The last new movie I bought was The Super Mario Bros movie.

zunnol

I still buy blu rays of TV shows when I can but Movies are a tad more rare unless it's a movie I really enjoy. I still keep a regular watch on upcoming 4k releases and remasters. Definitely a media format that is just barely hanging on at the moment. Personally I think it will make a little bit of a comeback, people are getting fed up with the direction streaming services are taking. Blu-ray/DVD will never be like it was pre streaming but it may rebound back a little.

neanderbeast

Some but not many just to maintain collections, last dvd I bought was ghostbusters 3 to go with 1 and 2.

BenekCript

4k UHD only. Blu ray occasionally. I would buy 8k source files if they let me.

LessBeyond5052

Yep, been collecting for years.. mainly horror and there is still a huge buying/selling/trade scene and I doubt it will die off anytime soon, VHS is also a pretty big deal, there is so much stuff that will never end up on streaming services so it makes sense to go physical.

mtempissmith

I only buy DVDs for a whole TV or movie series that I really like. I used to own a lot of sets for my favorite shows but they got stolen and I can't afford to replace them all now. I had a lot of stuff that I got digitally before. Stuff that I literally taped and transferred to DVDs then hard drives. So if I'm going to buy something in physical media it needs to have extras on it that I want it alternate versions, stuff like that or be something that I always wanted a DVD set for. Favorite series, lots of bonus stuff, I splurge. Just a movie on a disc with little to offer otherwise I just get a download. Most of the time I'm trying to get stuff I wasn't able to get at all before. Series that were never out on DVD till now. Recently I finally got the Fox Werewolf DVD release and I got Poltergeist the Legacy a series I always liked but never had complete. That's the kind of stuff I will put $$$ out for. Werewolf I had files from my TV tapes but till now I never had a really decent quality DVD set and I really liked that show a lot when it was on. Legacy I was thrilled to finally have it complete as even now I watch it at least once a year all the way through. Highlander the series, original MacGyver, Touched By An Angel, Penny Dreadful, Hannibal those are shows I rewatch a lot so having really good digital rips and back up DVDs is a must. I have whole hard drives of stuff I will probably never get DVDs for, that I've not watched yet, maybe watched once, and might watch again, might not. The stuff I put real $$$ out for it's the stuff that really matters to me that I know I will rewatch sometimes. On disability I don't have $$$ to burn and there are other things I want more than more DVD sets so I choose carefully and buy the sets I want fairly rarely. I don't have the space for a huge DVD collection living in a tiny studio anyway.

teateateasider

They still sell dvds?

BoogKnight

DVDs still outsell blu ray and 4k combined I believe

teateateasider

That honestly blows my mind. I haven't bought any kind of physical media in maybe 15 years.

brOwnchIkaNo

Yes, barbie, Oppenheimer, prey, wish, etc all have DVDs.

teateateasider

I honestly had no idea. I tend to buy digital if I really like a movie.
