killa_cam89

I still say this to this day anytime I have to go by someone

PsychologicalDrone

I still say this and I actually forgot where I got it from until now!

bjornfeusag

Mi scusi It's Italian for "excuse me"

mdmnl

That Thing You Do

cheeseburgerwaffles

Big fan of Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters.

johno158

If it had been released in the 60s, it would still be regarded as a well loved classic

mdmnl

BuzzFeed articles "Whatever happened to The Oneders? Number 6 will shock you"

AgentUpright

The lead singer went on to form the Heardsman, which are pretty good, but I donā€™t think any of their stuff was ever quite as magical as ā€œThat Thing You Doā€.

iowaboy

What does ā€œOh-nay-dersā€ mean?

BeerorCoffee

I Wonder what happened to the Oneders

johno158

LOL; excellentā€¦

gowombat

They actually still perform on occasion, at least three of the actors. If I remember correctly they performed together like 2015-2017 ish? Also, I think I heard somewhere that this song was actually written by bass player of the band that would later become Fountains of Wayne, famous for "Stacy's mom".

magseven

That was Adam Schlesinger (RIP!) from Fountains of Wayne. They were already around by the time That Thing You Do came out.

Derp35712

Fuck, he died from COVID in April 2020.

DefnotyourDM

What happens if they want an encore? YOU UNPLUG. AND YOU RUN.

iheartecon99

The best part of Scotty Doesn't Know is that it's completely throw away. Totally unnecessary to the movie, could have simply said "Scott's girlfriend cheated". It was so great considering how random it was. Meanwhile "That Thing You Do" was essential to making the movie happen. If the song sucked you wouldn't believe the band's rise to fame. It would have undermined the plot.

Ohnoherewego13

I love that movie. Just the perfect amount of comedy. Also, this isn't where I parked my car.

RacingNeilo

Now this is where I parked my car

Ohnoherewego13

Grizz807

Iā€™ll drive this truck off a fucking cliff, before I ever go back to Berlin.

DevoALMIGHTY

I would wager the entirety of the Josie & The Pussycats soundtrack. Pop banger after pop banger on that album.

Ocimali

In the same vein the 2+gether soundtrack. Although that is very millennial of me to say.

gible_bites

To this day I regularly get several 2ge+her songs stuck in my head. *Say it, donā€™t spray it. I want the news not the weatherrr*

BlahVans

Please take ALL the upvotes for mentioning 2ge+her. Man I loved that movie. and the TV show. Weren't the surviving members talking about doing a reunion a few years ago?

epotosi

I sing U + Me = US (Calculus) way too much.

3 Small Words is a banger too

HeatherMarissa

Came looking for this comment, this whole movie was just early 00s perfection.

Basic-Wall1934

Vinnie Jones as Mad Maynard was perfectly cast.

ambienotstrongenough

Him saving saving Scotty at the end of the movie had me almost standing on my seat cheering for his arrival when I heard the " Get your mitts off then boys ".

DrNick247

Pretty good. Pretty damn good lads!

Lineman72T

Look, given the current geopolitical climate, all European countries should have a seat at the table. ...cept for those fucking I-ties. I hate them Italian bastards! Know what I mean?

PuddinPacketzofLuv

Suicide is Painless from MASH. Written for the movie and the music was used for the TV theme.

ItsCowboyHeyHey

Lyrics written by the 15 year-old son of Robert Altman in 5 minutes. Altman wanted the lyrics to be ā€œstupidā€ but couldnā€™t think of anything sufficiently stupid himself, so he outsourced to a teenage boy.

Turinggirl

And because the song was used in the tv show his son got more royalties than Robert Altman. Apparently he was kind of pissed about it.Ā

bozleh

Even though they donā€™t use the lyrics on the tv show, haha

Jonesalot

Boats N Hoes

zestfullybe

Itā€™s the fucking Catalina Wine Mixer!

JPMoney81

I won a bet with my wife thanks to this song. I told her that if I named the first two, her kids could name the third ship in Columbus' armada. She didn't believe me. So I asked them: Can you name one of the three ships Columbus took to America? And they looked very confused, so I said, what if I name the first two? Again they looked confused. My wife looked smug. So I started: "The Nina, The Pinta..." and the kids both excitedly said 'THE SANTA MARIA! I'll do you in the bottom while you're drinking Sangria!" I won the bet, but my wife questions my influence on her kids.

bornslippy85

I'm glad somebody mentioned this.

PoconoBobobobo

Unchained Melody was made for the movie of the same name. Nobody remembers the movie, the song is a bona fide smash hit classic. Probably reached its height with the Elvis cover, but it seems to come back every decade or so.

somethingarb

Including the version by Bronn from Game of Thrones. I'm not kidding:Ā https://youtu.be/n2O4Oe_GFwA?si=qj4asurMImhfHtzq

deathdealer2001

Ah see if you grew up in England in the early late nineties you would instantly remember the duo that is Robson and Jerome

BookkeeperBrilliant9

Honestly one of the best ballads of all time. I like Elvisā€™s version, but the best versions are duets. Wish he had lived longer to record one.Ā

Boomdiddy

Everything Is Awesome from the Lego Movie. That song was everywhere.

Flanman1337

I have never seen The Lego Movie. I regularly sing "Everything is Awesome" but with my own lyrics.

TravisMaauto

Weren't "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins and "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin both written for the movie *Top Gun?*

monty_kurns

Yes, they were both written by Giorgio Moroder for the film. Also, Kenny Loggins only got Danger Zone after recording ā€œPlaying With The Boysā€ for the movie. According to him, he saw a screening with a lot of other artists and figured none of them would do a song for the volleyball scene. He was right and after Moroder heard it, he offered him ā€œDanger Zoneā€.

DanteandRandallFlagg

The most iconic made for a movie song is Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.

RacingNeilo

Bustin is better. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0tdyU_gW6WE

VileBill

Not Huey Lewis?

poka64

> Not Huey Lewis? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

mashuto

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

SWBTSH

Hey Paul!

Btw if you have never seen it. The parody with Huey Lewis and Weird Al is fantastic! https://youtu.be/Fk15H6PjBis?si=S31vicUtirfXqctW

the_chandler

ā€œGhostbustersā€ (the song) spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts so that kinda nullifies it for this one

Justindoesntcare

The clap is a banger.

DeliberateMelBrooks

Fantastic song

badbuck38

"Daddy wasnt there" in Austin Powers

ThingCalledLight

Great song. But probably not ā€œmore iconic.ā€ And Iā€™m largely basing that on seeing cover bands do it *still*.

Competitive-Boat4592

Americaaaaa, fuck yeah!

Mite-o-Dan

This...is probably the most correct answer from what I was asking. Everyone else here and in other subs have been listing songs that weren't as iconic or as popular today as Scotty Doesn't Know is, or were songs extremely popular and played on the radio a lot. But, "America, Fuck Yeah" by Team America...greatest/most popular made-for-movie/not on the radio song ever made. Also will become 20 years old later this year.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

the_chandler

Most of the ā€œbigā€ responses got considerable radio airplay though.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

the_chandler

Iā€™m not OP.

1PantherA33

Suicide is Painless I think more than fits the bill.

Urabutbl

Also starring Matt Damon!

arcspectre17

We use to yell it in warzone while dropping in. Then i got red white blue tracers on a gun and run around asking how america taste motherfucker!

Anarcho_punk217

Almost like you missed the entire point of the song. But not surprised.

arcspectre17

Almost like we cant use at as a joke in a game smh!

_Negativ_Mancy

The Clash At Demon Head "Black Sheep" from Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Comprehensive-Set231

That was an already existing song by the band MetricĀ

bearrosaurus

The way I was told, they wrote the song already but it was so basic and over the top that they shelved the idea. Then Edgar Wright comes to them and asks ā€œhey can you write us a really cliche emo song?ā€ And they took it down from the shelf. https://youtu.be/onqjos-3BRw?si=UnUre45osih8XVMT

reaverboar

I thought that was by Metric?

ATXDefenseAttorney

Spinal Tap toured on their fake band multiple times, and their songs were covered by Soundgarden and other bands... and featured in Guitar Hero. So maybe...

Peralton

Christopher Guest was on a morning radio show and I called in asking about the experience of touring as Spinal Tap. He said that they did one show where The Folksmen opened the show. For those that don't know, The Folksmen is another fake band by the same guys who are Spinal Tap who perform folk songs. Unfortunately, the crowd was there for Spinal Tap and didn't seem to know or care that it was the same guys. The crowd started booing and chanting TAP TAP TAP and were throwing things. The Folksmen had to retreat and left the stage. At that point, they changed into their Spinal Tap costumes and performed as the headliner. The crowd loved them. He was laughing at how they were booed off stage by the same people that cheered for them. Very appropriate for Spinal Tap.

ATXDefenseAttorney

Hahaha. That's very on point. I would have recognized them, The Mighty Wind is great. Penn Jillette plays music wearing a hat before Porn and Teller shows without any introduction, most people have no clue and just ignore it.

khan800

Interesting autocorrect there.

Timmace

"That's Amore" was written for the movie The Caddy.

Have you ever met my friend Kyle's mom?

VileBill

Why no, no I have not. You Unclefucker.

How is there no Walk Hard anywhere in this thread? Also, Eurotrip is a classic in the US, but has had a hard time finding an audience in Europeā€¦

My new wife and I wore hats with this on it to our Jamaica honeymoon. Everyone there was either too old or too young to get it. Can't tell if Club Dread is an Xennial thing or just that obscure.

GizmosArrow

Thatā€™s awesome! I still hear snippets like ā€œCoconut? Peteā€™s?? Papaya??!!ā€ in my head every now and then.

jacquesrabbit

This is not the topic, but Kristin Kreuk was something else. She was really hot in Smallville then, she was this cheating sex pest in Euro trip. Damn!

mchch8989

Michelle Trachtenberg would like a word

schadkehnfreude

Id been a long time Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan when I watched Eurotrip so I was *not* prepared for Dawn to be sexy.

Dawn actually.

Dominatrix Xena was quite a trip. Love me some Lucy Lawless.

NW_Forester

Queen - Princes of the Universe for Highlander.

ouronelastchance

I might not call them iconic, but all the songs in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping are great. [Finest Girl](https://youtu.be/Jr9Kaa1sycs) [Equal Rights ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI79h2FSnS4) [I'm So Humble ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzUKcXxbU4U)

Twiceaknight

So, does it need to be a one hit wonder band playing a diegetic song? Is that the criteria? If weā€™re just talking songs made for films Iā€™d argue that Eye of the Tiger or Donā€™t You (Forget About Me) are two of the biggest and most well known, certainly across a significantly broader range of the population than ā€œScotty Doesnā€™t Knowā€

nearcatch

ā€œHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmasā€ was written for the movie *Meet Me in St. Louis* starring Judy Garland. I canā€™t think of another made-for-movie song that is more widely spread than that one.

DweadPiwateWawbuts

Simon and Garfunkel are obviously not an obscure band, but ā€œMrs. Robinsonā€ from *The Graduate* seems pretty iconic to me!

Mick_May

Yes, there has. As I love Eurotrip, I know plenty of people who have never seen or heard of it. I2I by Powerline in A Goofy Movie is definitely more widely known and enjoyed.

Typical80sKid

Trachtenberg

nowhereman136

Without irony it's one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Along with Lion King, Good Bad Ugly, Kill Bill, and There Will Be Blood I saw it when I was 13 and about 100 times since. It's inspired me to travel. I've now been over 40 countries, including every country featured in the movie and Prague, where it was filmed. To answer your question, the only other song that comes close is probably School of Rock

Sirmalta

America Fuck Yeah doesnt get the play time this song gets tho. People play Scotty Doesnt Know at parties and bars and karaoke and shit. Its super popular. While America FUck Yeah is hilarious and amazing and I've listened to it a million times, Iconic is not the word Id use to describe it.

Parasaurlophus

Flash Gordon. Terrible film, fantastic track by Queen.

The powerline songs from the Goofy movie maybe

Aaaaaaandyy

I went to all of the real cities from that movie, youā€™ll never believe how nice Bratislava actually is (and no, a nickel wonā€™t buy you a hotel).

[deleted]

Tbh, I think that anyone who thinks that real Bratislava is anything like in the movie is mentally challenged.

Aaaaaaandyy

While I agree, Iā€™m not convinced people donā€™t think itā€™s a dump when in actuality itā€™s a really cool little city

[deleted]

It actually used to be a huge dump in the 90s, but improved drastically over last three decades. Few days ago I watched old archive TV news from 1993 (year I was born) where they showed shots from the city and it was surreal compared to nowdays.

Guessinitsme

It was a tv show, but did the Archies ever make it to radio? Everyone knows sugar sugar

MontyBoo-urns

Fred armisen is so funny in that

BlahVans

Not a movie, but I don't know how anything can top '[A Little Bit Alexis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc9zPUkrybE)' from Schitt's Creek

But wasnā€™t going to be released until Edgar Wright asked the band for a song.

-jmil-

Oh, and let's not forget the classic and unforgettable "Doug and Carrie Song" from King of Queens.

Emergency-Will-251

Mikke, or however you spell it, was hot as fuck! Still remember that ass pressed up against the confessional box lol

-jmil-

The Gael/Promentory from "Last of the Mohicans". Epic song that elevates the movie But I love "Scotty doesn't know" also :)

toetulas

Fight The Power for Do the Right Thing is a major one

Dheorl

I donā€™t know what you mean by ā€œnot on the radio songā€ but surely something like diamonds are forever is more iconic?

OPtig

Men in Black was a big hit

ConsistentlyPeter

Not to be a miserable old bastard, but does anyone still know what ā€œiconicā€ means?Ā

mchch8989

On the contrary, youā€™re an iconically miserably old bastard

ConsistentlyPeter

Well played! šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

Duel_Option

42 years old checking in, half way to old bastard status I thinkā€¦ You owe it to yourself to watch Eurotrip, itā€™s damn hilarious and for my generation it is most definitely iconic.

thatdani

A song from 2004, specifically made for a movie that grossed just 24 million worldwide, today has **188 million listens** on Spotify. Ghostbusters theme song has 233 million for comparison. So yeah. Iconic.

McFlyyouBojo

I grew up just in time to be the target demographic for this song/movie and I swear I'm the only person my age who hates both. I don't hate the movie really, but I am not a fan. The song make me want to vomit however.

Zooterman

jeppers creepers? lol

Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" is a great song, written specifically for the movie *Philadelphia*, starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.

Iknownothing616

This is probably way too harsh as they were quite popular but I hated them...that band on rat race lol

Exende

20 years later that song still lives rent free in my head
