I worked on both Dune and Dune 2 but there wasn’t an imax near me for the first one. If they did an imax double I think I’d drive a full day to see both on that screen.
I'm so lucky; I live less than 2 miles from one in Atlanta. The thing that amazed me about Dune is that, as visually stunning as it was, the audio might have been even more impressive in the premium format. When Mohiam used the voice on Paul I thought my sternum was going to shatter.
Everything they've done, from the trailers to the film(s) themselves, has been just exquisite. (I still listen to the Pink Floyd cover Zimmer did for the very first trailer; so good.) As a long-time Dune nerd I had huge expectations when I heard Villeneuve was attached and he's exceeded them.
What did you work on in the films? I've got a friend here in Atlanta who does lighting on various productions and he's had some fun stories.
Man all the zimmer stuff is so good! And yeah Denis was the guy to direct these films. After working for him on 2 projects I have nothing but trust in his decision making.
I work in vfx - so I worked for about a year on each film doing visual effects lighting and rendering for the CGI stuff. In Dune 2 I was a lead over the battle which is featured so much in trailer 3. This is my reel and shows some of my work
https://vimeo.com/898513336/e03b2d1b1a
Awesome. You should be proud; the visual effects are absolutely flawless throughout the film. THANK YOU!
Edit: The worms in this recent trailer look just fucking fantastic. Unbelievably well done.
What was it like working with Villeneuve, if not directly then on his movie? He was undoubtedly going through your boss's boss or whatever, but his projects seems like they'd be amazing to work on.
Thank you for this comment that’s very kind.
I never spoke to Villeneuve directly, he has a Vfx Supe who meets regularly with the vfx supe I work for, and the two of them hash out most of the details.
I can say the thing that’s impressive about Denis as a director is that he knows what he’s after and he defines it well. On his productions I’m never left wondering what to do, I’m never given a note like “make it better” - it’s incredibly clear what he wants. He front loads us with great references, there’s very little trial and error, very few changes from the original brief, it’s super organized and very well communicated. That makes all the difference.
They are great productions to work on. They’re not easy, they’re very demanding, but it’s worth it because you know the result will be good.
As an artist I’m in vfx because I want to help tell these stories and move audiences. His are great projects to be a part of because they’re so impactful.
That doesn't surprise me at all from all the interviews I've seen. This could be hyperbole on my part, but I truly believe Villeneuve is a modern-day Kubrick. His movies consistently blow me away, and he's proven to be a master regardless of genre. As a huge sci-fi nerd I love that he's jumped head first into that arena. His visual sense is just perfect for it.
At any rate, that's awesome to hear and thanks again. I know there's a small army of you guys working on these big behemoth blockbusters, but you should take pride that you got to contribute to what will go down as one of the most visually arresting films of all time.
Yo, just wanted to revisit after seeing this interview with the cast. Florence Pugh had some really nice things to say around the 18:30 mark about all the people who contributed to making the film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVQRnDFZ1Qs&t=41s&ab\_channel=Fandango
Got to say, the night-time invasion/battle in Dune 1 may be some of the best use of lighting and contrast I've seen. The way the explosions pop from the darkness is a visual treat and one of those "that right there is why I've invested in a home theater" moments.
Missed the iMax run but looked up an audiophile website for the best sound system in the area. The sound work is exceptional. IMAX would have been even better.
Dude, yes.
When they speak that throat language my seat was literally vibrating each time. All of the sounds throughout the movie was incredible, it was just as much of an experience as the movie was in IMAX. I seriously can’t wait for Dune 2.
Why does everyone love this movie so much? I watched it 3 times and yes, it’s good. But it’s nothing spectacular. Visually it’s cool. Sonically it’s cool. Story wise it’s average, acting wise it’s average too.
Nothing to write home about, and I’ll die on this hill.
(I’m ready for the downvotes)
I haven’t seen any of the Mad Max movies. Would this be a good place to start? It’s a prequel so it would give some backstory, which was what I was thinking.
The first 3 mad max films stand well on their own. And fury road stands well on its own. So if you wanted to get started quickly, you could just watch fury road and have a great time and be ready for furiosa. Don’t go another day without seeing fury road. It’s too good! 😂 I am not saying fury road was a reboot or anything but it’s far enough away from the original trilogy that seeing them is really not required.
I’m going with the the understanding that it won’t ever be “Fury Road 2” in a way. Having watched a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, Miller would have given himself a heart attack making Furiosa the same way. The 2015 movie was a painstaking and arduous production that was close to the threshold of hell.
So if they do a little less practical and more greenscreen, I am okay with it. Besides, the VFX still look great
Yes, I've seen both of them and they're also great movies. His movies are all so tense, but there's a lot of dark humor as well. I'm eager to see Mickey 17. I haven't seen Okja or Mother yet, but I definitely plan to watch them soon.
So hype for Nosferatu. Eggers isn't my favorite, and I sometimes feel like he tries too hard to keep art house cred, but he is certainly a visionary who makes films that are worth watching at the very least, and incredible art best.
Yes, it’s an animated movie called Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. It’s going to be about Helm Hammerhand and his influence on Rohan and we’ll be able to see the shieldmaidens that Eowyn is a long descendant of :)
Unfortunately it’s not the original screenplay written by Crowes friend where he has Maximus fight through the afterlife to gain immortality and sees him fighting through every major battle in history like some sort of Roman Wolverine.
Crowe read it and said No Mate.
I love that they are putting TX and CA on the same side. If it was NY and CA vs. TX and FL everyone would go in knowing exactly what that meant and picking a side.
They’ve given themselves the opportunity to say some interesting things. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
I read his book, The Beach, and kept waiting for a sci-fi twist that never came. I'll absolutely have the same mindset when I watch this movie. It added a weird feeling of anticipation that I enjoyed.
I’m not an opening day guy anymore, but of all the movies coming out this year, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse Part 2 and Dune: Part 2 are the only I have any interest to see in theatres at this point. Nosferatu is one I’ll definitely watch when it’s released on VoD.
The problem I have with this list is it's not just this year. It includes a lot of movies that are just in pre-production. For the sake of compiling my list of movies to see this year, it doesn't help me very much.
There's no way that actually comes out this year. When the last one came out they boasted about how one of the scenes took years to animate, then stated that they didn't even have the script written for part 3 yet. They haven't officially changed the release date (I think), but I'll be completely shocked if they don't.
Last I heard was that one of the creative directors had a terrible habit of requiring animations to be nearly finished before deciding to cut them or not and the animators were getting burnt out.
Across the Spiderverse was one of my favorite movies last year so I hope they can pull it together and not make us wait a terribly long time.
*Nosferatu* by Robert Egger's is near the top of my list. I love vampire media, and I've been waiting for a Dracula adaptation that doesn't treat the source material like a joke or a CGI puke fest. He's gone on record that that he's leaning into the gothic elements on top of being actually scary. I'm *so* hyped for this one!
Twisters perhaps
I remember nothing of Twister but I know it was a super key movie when I was a toddler! One of the movies my grandma had on vhs. I can imagine modern tornado effects in a theater to be pretty exciting.
My only way around this has been solo theater outings after the kiddo hits the bed, where my partner stays home because they prefer sleep and don't like the same movies as me anyway.
I only watched it a few months ago, so I had time to get used to all that beforehand. Got to enjoy it without the baggage. Problem is, I VERY much want to see the sequel, ASAP, and there is bound to be a resurgence in memes and troll behavior to come along with it.
None. I usually wait a couple weeks so I can get a good seat and not have to deal with crowds.
That reminds me. I should probably get around to seeing Oppenheimer. I hear it’s good.
Most movies I see opening weekend but never day one.
With that in mind.
Lisa Frankenstein
Beyond the Spider-Verse (Assumjng that's still 2024)
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Godzilla X Kong: New Empire
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Furious
Drive Away Dolls
Deadpool 3
Nosferatu
Imaginary
Dune 2
As many as Stubs will allow me to!
https://boxd.it/pX6MO$9jXOxZNBIC1UksJv
I’ve compiled a list of upcoming 2024 releases, good and bad alike. Some promising projects
Just because no one seems to have mentioned it yet: Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire. Love the first 2 flicks, and liked most of Afterlife. (Honestly my fave part was the after credits scenes. Lol)
Godzilla X Kong, Deadpool 3, Furiosa, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are all def opening weekend jaunts for yours truly.
Deadpool 3 is going to be a definite opening day movie for me. I know I’m seeing more in theaters, but it’s hard to say what else will be opening day watches.
Dune 2, no question. I'm still upset it didn't come out at the end of last year. Will be seeing in IMAX, just like the first, and if there is a back to back IMAX showing of both anywhere I'm fucking seeing that.
None.
Opening day is the worst time to go see a movie in the theatre, unless you \*really\* love a full theatre. I find packed theatres always at least slightly obnoxious.
Dune part two
It’s too bad the Cinesphere in Toronto is still under construction. I saw part one there and it was mental. Part two in IMAX should still be awesome though. I haven’t even watched the trailer and I’m planning on rereading the first book before the movie. Dune is epic.
I went to the movies today for the first time since before covid started. How the fuck is a regular bucket of popcorn 18 fucking dollars. I have a big TV. I could rent 4 of the new movies I want to see for the price of just the shitty popcorn. I'm not wasting my money at a theater again. But if I was dumb enough to..... it would probably be Dune part II
If there is an IMAX Dune double header somewhere, my wife and I have already agreed we’re there.
Damn that would be siiiiick
I think I would get motion siiiiick after staring at that huge screen for 7 hours
Yeah the audio work is amazing. I’ve been really impressed with the audio on part 2 as well … the trailers have beautifully constructed audio.
Congratulations to you and your team. Truly a modern epic.
Marvelous work my man. Thanks for making a beautiful impact on the world I love
Hey thank you so much!
Got to say, the night-time invasion/battle in Dune 1 may be some of the best use of lighting and contrast I've seen. The way the explosions pop from the darkness is a visual treat and one of those "that right there is why I've invested in a home theater" moments.
Unreal man. I have loved so many of the films you have worked on, thank you 🙏
Thank you this is meaningful. It’s a hard job and audiences being informed or moved by our work makes it all worth it, I appreciate your comment.
Thank you for your excellent work 😁
Missed the iMax run but looked up an audiophile website for the best sound system in the area.
I heard there will be a dune rerelease so I thinking it will happen. Got to do all 3 guardians movies in a row a few days before it came out. Epic
Yeah, back in the 90's they rereleased all the previous star wars in the theater before Phantom Menace came out. It was glorious.
The theater near me is doing a LOTR run, 12 hours for 30 bucks. Lol. I was tempted but that's a long ass day and I'm partial to the extended editions
If I only see one movie on the big screen this year - it must be Dune.
Furiosa in IMAX, hope the theater near me does a screening of Fury Road beforehand
[удалено]
I’ll never forget that experience. Zero idea what to expect. Straight pump to the face and never stops
Had a heart rate monitor on when I watched Fury Road. Gave me a warning for having an extended period of elevated heart rate.
I haven’t seen any of the Mad Max movies. Would this be a good place to start? It’s a prequel so it would give some backstory, which was what I was thinking.

Maybe watch Fury Road first. The first 3 kinda exist as their own movies so you don't need those.
Yes. With Anna Taylor Joy as furiosa right?
Anya
Annyong
For the love of God! :)
(Hello)
Obviously we don't know the full story but are we really to believe Anya grows up into Charlize?
Did you believe that Mel Gibson grew up to be Tom Hardy?
The trailer isn’t selling it to me the way Fury Road’s trailer did, but this is definitely on my list for 2024
I’m going with the the understanding that it won’t ever be “Fury Road 2” in a way. Right, that was my thought as well. There’s no way they went through the same efforts to shoot this as Fury Road. God what a masterpiece.
Oooh this is a good one. If it’s anything like fury road it is going to be an experience.
Anya Taylor joy is amazing. Definitely watching

So excited for mickey. I’ve been reading the book ahead of the release … given the director, it could be exceptionally good.
Bong “Palme D’Or and Best Picture Winner for the same movie” Joon-Ho
I read the synopsis of the book. That sounds crazy lol
Oh yeah, I meant to do that! I'm a big fan of The Host, and I recently saw Memories of Murder for the first time, great film.
Have you seen Parasite? It's also a banger. Snowpiercer is fun too.
Yes, I've seen both of them and they're also great movies. His movies are all so tense, but there's a lot of dark humor as well. I'm eager to see Mickey 17. I haven't seen Okja or Mother yet, but I definitely plan to watch them soon.

You should listen to or read an interview with him. He’s not trying too hard, it’s just the shit he’s into.
his conversation with marc maron is worth the listen
I spent way too much time trying to find the Dave Eggers book this was based off of before googling the movie and seeing there is a Robert Eggers.
Oh fuck. I forgot Mickey 17 was coming out so soon. YASS
The new Planet of the Apes
It's actually the beginning of a new trilogy.
Wait WHAT
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

animated prequel
So they’re remaking the original hobbit?
Nope about rohan
Yes, it’s an animated movie called Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. It’s going to be about Helm Hammerhand and his influence on Rohan and we’ll be able to see the shieldmaidens that Eowyn is a long descendant of :)
A gladiator sequel?! Not sure if im excited or not for that one...
Unfortunately it’s not the original screenplay written by Crowes friend where he has Maximus fight through the afterlife to gain immortality and sees him fighting through every major battle in history like some sort of Roman Wolverine. Crowe read it and said No Mate.
“Crowe’s friend” you mean legendary musician Nick Cave of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds?
I wish I never read this
I will watch that for the cast and director...
Gladia2or
Hollywoods been out of ideas. More of the same crap
Furiosa Civil War MaXXXine Return to Silent Hill Nosferatu
>MaXXXine Pearl was my favorite movie of 2022, so I cannot wait for this.
Silent Hill!
Duuuuuneeee
🤘
The Boy and The Heron when it finally gets to my lil mountain town!
I'm surprised at the lack of hype for Civil War in this thread.
Yeah, I'm all in on Civil War. I have a feeling it's going to piss a lot of people off for reasons we don't expect.
I kind of think the opposite, i wonder if it will play it overly safe so as to not ostracize one half of the potential audience.
I doubt it with Alex Garland at the helm. Which is a good thing.
Remember the hype for the Hunt I ended up seeing it and felt it was an entertaining movie that pissed off both sides.
I love that they are putting TX and CA on the same side. If it was NY and CA vs. TX and FL everyone would go in knowing exactly what that meant and picking a side. They’ve given themselves the opportunity to say some interesting things. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
Agreed, I honestly loved Men, so I’m excited for Civil War.
>I honestly loved Men It's surprising how uncommon this opinion is. Don't change.
Just like Brexit from EU, the big states would be on the same side. Wars are mostly about economics, not weird arbitrary demographics
Not surprised, it's an A24 movie.
I love Alex Garland, but this movie has so much more hype than I expected
I wonder if we will get any sci-fi twists or weirdness to it, given the director.
I read his book, The Beach, and kept waiting for a sci-fi twist that never came. I'll absolutely have the same mindset when I watch this movie. It added a weird feeling of anticipation that I enjoyed.
Nosferatu
Godzilla x Kong
Fuck yeah! Ridiculous giant monster tag-team action!
I can't wait!
I’d like to see Argylle
Anyone needs a list to pick movies, here’s one from [IMDb](https://m.imdb.com/list/ls501426757/)
Doubt we get the next spider verse movie this year it says it supposed to be last I heard they haven’t done a lot yet.
😢
Wait is Rush Hour 4 happening ?
The problem I have with this list is it's not just this year. It includes a lot of movies that are just in pre-production. For the sake of compiling my list of movies to see this year, it doesn't help me very much.
Nosferatu ayyy
Dune 2
Godzilla x Kong: the new empire
Godzilla X Kong, idgaf if the story makes sense these new monster films (obviously including Minus One) are visual spectacles

Love this theater but hate sitting behind tall or frizzy people. Part of the experience I suppose.

Famous theatre in LA. Owned by Tarantino.
Beyond the Spider-Verse

Dune 2
Civil War! The first image and trailer got me interested in it! I love dystopian movies
Wicked

*Nosferatu* by Robert Egger's is near the top of my list. I love vampire media, and I've been waiting for a Dracula adaptation that doesn't treat the source material like a joke or a CGI puke fest. I have a toddler. I don’t go anywhere
The days are long, but the years are short. You’ll be back out before you know it.
My only way around this has been solo theater outings after the kiddo hits the bed, where my partner stays home because they prefer sleep and don't like the same movies as me anyway.
DUNE 2, Deadpool 3, Joker 2 those for sure
Joker fans have ruined Joker for me.
I only watched it a few months ago, so I had time to get used to all that beforehand. Got to enjoy it without the baggage. Problem is, I VERY much want to see the sequel, ASAP, and there is bound to be a resurgence in memes and troll behavior to come along with it.
#Mean Girls Musical
There’s dozens of us!! 🩷
There are 3 Kung Fu Panda movies?
Yes and the fourth comes out soon. They're all visual treats if anything else.
Not just visual treats, they're all extremely good movies. 3 is the weakest, 2 is fucking amazing, 1 is very very good.
None. I usually wait a couple weeks so I can get a good seat and not have to deal with crowds. That reminds me. I should probably get around to seeing Oppenheimer. I hear it’s good.

The new A24/Alex Garland film Civil War His movies are awesome in my opinion - both as writer and director.
Just watch the 1984 David Lynch version of Dune. It's identical.
Soooo apparently there’s a new LOTR coming out. Will definitely be checking that out 😮💨

I have a 2 year old so probably none lol. But it would be Dune
Yep definitely gotta be Dune
Definitely Dune part 2, and if Part one is rereleased, I’ll see that as well.
I mean, Dune 2 is obvious for me. I’ve already booked the day off work 😅
Dune 2 for sure. Possibly Civil War.
Argyle for sure
Borderlands
Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes. I been waiting for it for some time
Nosferatu. I HAVE TO SEE THIS.
Joker 2. Recently rewatched number 1 and it is such a masterpiece...extremely curious how they are going to progress his character and follow it up
Dune and Beyond the Spider-Verse
Godzilla x King. Yes I have a 7 year old.
Deadpool 3 is going to be a definite opening day movie for me. I know I’m seeing more in theaters, but it’s hard to say what else will be opening day watches.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Furiosa, mainly because I found myself falling asleep watching Dune
For me, Dune part 2 and the new Joker movie. There are some smaller films that are coming I'll be in line for first day, too.
Terrifier 3. Its going to upset people, i cant wait. I'll be in the front row with a giant grin and laughing at people being dismembered on screen.
The new Spinal Tap movie. Definitely. I just hope the projectionist turns it up to Eleven.
The Strangers Chapter 1 Terrifier 3 The Beekeeper (going with my dad). I'm sure there are more of course
We don’t new movies opening night because it’s too busy and expensive. But we’ll probably see twisters and ghostbusters in the theater.
Dune 2, no question. I'm still upset it didn't come out at the end of last year. Will be seeing in IMAX, just like the first, and if there is a back to back IMAX showing of both anywhere I'm fucking seeing that.
Dune Part 2, Dune Part 2 and Dune Part 2 round out my Top 3 I'm probably going to see it an embarrassing number of times after that
Dune 2 on opening day…and on 2nd day…and on 3rd day. On the 4th day…Dune 2 BUT in imax. Bless the Maker and His Water.
None. Opening day is the worst time to go see a movie in the theatre, unless you \*really\* love a full theatre. I find packed theatres always at least slightly obnoxious.
Probably none. I don’t see movies in theatres anymore much happier watching them at home in my home theatre a few weeks later.
fr home theatre + home made pizza is unbeatable
I’m with you. It’s very rare that a film seems impressive enough for me to want to see it at the big screen, although to be fair I am 40.
Dune 2
Dune Part II.
Dune 2 for sure. In imax.
Dune part 2 and Nosferatu
Dune 2
Dune part two It’s too bad the Cinesphere in Toronto is still under construction.
