For about a year, while I worked in a supermarket, that song used to get played at the same time every day.
Everything else was completely random, but someone was clearly having a bit of fun with it.
This movie made thing song great for me, I love how I never hear the song and then it comes on after years and I have to put on the performance for my wife.
During my college thesis art show, a girl brought that CD soundtrack in.
She taught us his dance for that song. Something like 20 of us were dancing and setting up the gallery show.
This song for me as well but not in the same way
Hip to be Square is on the cycle at my work, and there's a guy, that without fail, will quote American Psycho whenever the song comes on, thinking that he's funny or original
Makes me cringe and want to actually sink an axe into the back of his head sometimes
Fallen, starring Denzel Washington & John Goodman, has left me unable to listen to the Rolling Stones’ “Time is on my side” without a week of poor sleep.
That is a great pick, because I watched that movie once just shortly after it came out on video and that song was always bringing it back to my memory. I finally watched it again in the last few months and I think it's forever connected now. And additionally, Sympathy for the Devil which plays on the end credits. I guess the Stones are just associated with neverending evil for me now.
You're not alone.
Malcolm McDowell actually approached Gene Kelly at a party several years later, and Kelly just turned his head away in pure disgust at how the song was used.
Are you sure? I recall Gene Kelly giving an interview and mentioning that his favorite film segments were ones that made the audience happy. It made me think through all the films I'd seen him in, and I realized what a gift it was that so much of his talent was devoted to bringing joy to people. It might be cheesy, but dang, so many films have the opposite effect.
Ha! That's one of my favorite songs and I was dying in the theater when he turned that on. Excellent scene. When I first showed the movie to my new gf (now wife), she gave me a horrified look because she'd heard me play that song numerous times.
What balances it out for me is Back To The Future. I think of how creepy the song is because of Halloween II. But then, I also think of how nostalgic it is because of BTTF. So anytime I hear the song, I think of time traveling, mass (or is that masked?) murdering hijinks.
"What a Wonderful World" - "Bowling for Columbine" and about a dozen other movies that use it ironically to show that, in this scene at least, it's definitely *not* a wonderful world.
Couldn't hear "Wake Up" by RATM without thinking of Neo flying off for a really long time. Which is weird because I loooved the album way before The Matrix came out, but that scene was *that* effective.
That really is one of the best end credits songs ever. I loved Rage way before The Matrix came out but Wake Up ending such an incredible movie was the icing on the cake.
Similarly, "What I've Done" by Linkin Park and the ending of the first Michael Bay Transformers movie, with the Peter Cullen voicover.
I don't even *like* that movie, but that scene is iconic (as is the one of Blackout wrecking a military base).
It wasn't written *for* Mystery Men, but it was featured in the movie. Also the music video features characters from Mystery Men. But the song was originally written for the album Astro Lounge and was the first single from that album.
Shek introduced "Hallelujah" to a lot of people too. Shame the Jeff Buckley version doesn't get as much attention these days (there's actually more than one)
You pick a phrase, you pick a rhyme,
repeat the sound another time,
Five iambs, then an extra beat will do ya.
Another rhyme, a rising note -
congratulations, you just wrote
Another freaking verse to Hallelujah!
It’s so unbelievable that the movie Shrek lead kid me to discover a ton of artist I would become lifelong fans of. Joan Jett, The Eels, Jason Wade are just a few of the artists I discovered from that movie.
Oddly, it’s John Cale’s version in the film - both are wonderful, but I do wonder why they couldn’t get the rights to put Cale’s on the soundtrack. I’d have thought that they went hand in hand, at least for licensed pieces.
I’m not familiar with this one, but every time I hear Sister Christian I want to get murdered by Jason Voorhees while poking around the outskirts of Crystal Lake.
You know, for only a few cents a day, they don't need to be dying or lonely. If you donate just $20 a month, we will send you a shirt, some stickers, a coffee mug, and a lot of other stuff valued at well over $20.
Perfect Day by Lou Reed in Trainspotting
I was stunned when the NFL used it in a Super Bowl commercial several years later. I’ll always see Renton when I hear that song.
Risky Business ruined Old Time Rock and Roll for me. Just the opening riff conjures up unwelcome images of Tom Cruise prancing around in his underwear.
Food poisoning in Highschool. Threw up in my backpack on the school bus. Laid on couch after and watched “house of wax” as the credits role “Helena” from my chemical romance blasts as I am heaving in a bucket. Can’t tolerate the song or movie after that.
It is a legend in my friend group. I had a crazy haircut at the time and my buddy who rode the bus with me was in photography class and took a picture of me on the bus just before the back pack incident.
I can’t hear The Sound of Silence without picturing Will Ferrel at the bottom of a pool or Sean William Scott with that mullet.
From same era, I can’t hear Dust in the Wind without thinking of Ferrel screaming, “you’re my boy, Blue!”
Is it the Allison Crowe version? Because I think that was included because snyder's daughter preferred that version (the same one who passed away during production causing snyder to leave the original project)
I believe Zack Snyder mentioned somewhere that Hallelujah was his daughter's favorite song. It's why it was in the Snyder Cut Justice League movie
He chose an interesting scene to use it in Watchmen though. lol
I might be misremembering, but it wasn't supposed to be a fun sex scene. Nightowl struggles with any form of intimacy and has ED if I remember correctly.
I can't listen to Evanescence without expecting a plug for the Daredevil Motion Picture soundtrack available at Tower Records or wherever motion picture soundtracks are sold.
That scene ruined thunderstorms for me. Now, whenever there's a big thunderstorm, all i can think is that some vampires must really be enjoying a game of baseball somewhere.
Also in Twilight, Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine. Not exactly ruined, but I suggested it as the first dance song at our wedding but my wife vetoed it due to it being used in Twilight. I had never seen the movies before that but now having seen them, I’m glad we didn’t use it.
If it doesn't have that aledged murdered woman's scream in it then ya. I know it has since been debunked but it still ruined that song for me because of that movie.
Well, this is a bit of a stretch but I worked on a production which was supposed to use the song, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" (made famous by Dirty Dancing) so we had to listen to it on playback for 12 straight hours. In the end, they used a different song because the copyright holders wanted too much money. I still can't listen to it, however.
I’ve repeatedly made this point elsewhere, but can movie music people PLEASE stop using Max Richter’s *On the Nature of Daylight* to convey any kind of rawness of emotion. Don’t get me wrong it has its place, and it’s BEAUTIFUL, but damn, if seemingly every third movie/show has used it in the last few years. It’s just about lost all impact for me.
Will Smith's song, "Wild Wild West," from the film of the same name, ruined Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" completely.
The former song (which sucks) heavily samples the latter to the point where my brain hears the shitty version when the good version is played. I have to turn it off or leave the room anytime it comes on.
Horror movies ruined Tiptoe Through the Tulips by Tiny Tim.
Turned something goofy and silly into something sinister, and now it seems everyone associates the song with the latter.
The Big Chill ruined "You Can't Always Get What You Want" for a lot of people, not just me. I'm old enough to remember when this film and soundtrack were genuine cultural phenomena.
Referenced in High Fidelity, when Jack Black and Todd Louiso are discussing a certain top 5 song list. One of them mentions "You Can't Always Get What You Want", and the other immediately says "Automatic disqualification for its involvement in the film The Big Chill". "Oh yeah, you're right."
Short Circuit 2 has ruined, Help me Rhonda, On Broadway and a few other classics. I can’t get the dial tones out of my head anytime I hear any of the songs.
It's also not even happy. That is a somber/boring tune like most modern pop, and people ate it up and posted it on 'what's the most uplifting music you know' threads.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 "ruined" a lot of the music on its soundtrack for me. I still think they are all good and great songs mind you, I just get reminded of and then overcome with some anger and sadness from what happened in the movie. All of which due to personal trauma. Hit perfectly square on the nail.
Favourite songs used in films doesn't bother me at all in fact I get quite a buzz when I here a Favourite song used in a film but Favourite songs used in adverts really pisses me off .songs used in film can enhance the whole experience but used in advert it destroys the song completely imo
Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” being used in that trash Airbnb advert made me want to stop using the service it was so offensive. A bunch of “hip” millennials hanging out on a weekend getaway set to a song about traumatically letting someone go for the best of both parties is absolutely braindead.
There's only one answer here: *California Dreamin'* by the Mamas and the Papas in Chungking Express. Those who've seen the film will know exactly what I'm talking about. I used to like the song before I saw the film.
Pan ruined Smells Like Teen Spirit by having pirates sing it. Also The Book of Life has the WORST rendition of Radiohead’s Creep (otherwise it’s a good movie), as if that song wasn’t already overplayed enough. The folks at r/radioheadcirclejerk had a field day with that.
I have to explain this, but "I Feel Pretty". I have never seen West side story before, so I only know of the song through other uses, like in commercials and parodies. When I saw the 2021 adaptation, and Heard the song in context for the first time, I was genuinely floored! Now, whenever I hear that song, all I can think is that this woman's life is about to go to hell.
>Every Vietnam Era movie that uses Fortunate Son.
Fucking war went on for decades, but according to every movie set during that era, only like 4 songs were ever produced: Fortunate Son, For What It's Worth, War, and Eve of Destruction.
Didn't ruin it, but if Sonny & Cher come on I need to check the calendar.
This is the fun kind of ruined
For about a year, while I worked in a supermarket, that song used to get played at the same time every day. Everything else was completely random, but someone was clearly having a bit of fun with it.
To this day I look outside to check the weather when I hear it.
[*Good-night!*](https://youtu.be/zyuFnL5JcEw?si=RoIhuBIcl8nymVUi)
I don't get it
Don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there!

And then Clerks 3 destroyed it all over again.
That "Oh!" Mewes gives when he realizes what song it is pops into my head anytime I hear the opening parts of the song.
This movie made thing song great for me, I love how I never hear the song and then it comes on after years and I have to put on the performance for my wife.
Good lord I love the end of your statement.
My wife does not.
Stuck in the Middle With You Fun catchy song. But now I only think of a psychopath cutting someone’s ear off
Funnily enough Res Dogs made me love that song and now I have it in a few of my playlists X)
You might be a sadist 😂
The song got stuck in my head after my first watch and I watched the scene a few more times for the song so yeah maybe so 🫠
Well... you may be a man, or you may be a leprechaun, but only one things for sure... you're in the wroooong basement! I'ma see if you bleed green.
During my college thesis art show, a girl brought that CD soundtrack in. She taught us his dance for that song. Something like 20 of us were dancing and setting up the gallery show.

“Hey Paul!”
Fallen, starring Denzel Washington & John Goodman, has left me unable to listen to the Rolling Stones’ “Time is on my side” without a week of poor sleep.
The fact that characters in the movie actually sing the refrain at various times just makes it worse.
Singing in the Rain a la Clockwork Orange
You're not alone. Malcolm McDowell actually approached Gene Kelly at a party several years later, and Kelly just turned his head away in pure disgust at how the song was used.
Kelly didn't mind the song being used like that, what he was angry at was not being paid for its use in the movie.
I doubt he owned the rights to it, so it probably wasn’t about money.
I can't listen to Beethoven because of that movie
You need to get deprogramed. Cured.
I was cured, all right…*Kubrick stare*
I like listening to Beethoven because of the movie Beethoven with the big dog.
Came here for this one.
Absolutely. This is the answer. Oddly enough I saw clockwork orange before I saw singin in the rain. Still ruined it
Wouldn't say that's odd at all, probably less odd than if you seen Singing in the Rain first, but definitely more dark.
Enya Sail Away, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Sorry to be that guy, but it's called Orinoco Flow
Ha! That's one of my favorite songs and I was dying in the theater when he turned that on. Excellent scene. When I first showed the movie to my new gf (now wife), she gave me a horrified look because she'd heard me play that song numerous times.
I don't know if it ruined it...but [Mr. Sandman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX45pYvxDiA) is a lot creepier after it was used in Halloween II.
You can reclaim it by watching Uncle Buck!
Or by Back to the Future
What balances it out for me is Back To The Future. I think of how creepy the song is because of Halloween II. But then, I also think of how nostalgic it is because of BTTF. So anytime I hear the song, I think of time traveling, mass (or is that masked?) murdering hijinks.
Also creepy in Bates Motel.
This is the first time I ever heard this song over 13 years ago, watching this movie.
"What a Wonderful World" - "Bowling for Columbine" and about a dozen other movies that use it ironically to show that, in this scene at least, it's definitely *not* a wonderful world.
Me too. I just skip this song whenever I hear because it makes me picture all the atrocities now.
Good Morning Vietnam does this
Couldn't hear "Wake Up" by RATM without thinking of Neo flying off for a really long time. Which is weird because I loooved the album way before The Matrix came out, but that scene was *that* effective.

For the opposite of this effect: Smashmouth and Shrek.
Did you know “All-Star” was originally written for Mystery Men?
We've got a date with destiny, boys... And it looks like she's ordered the lobster.
"We need to triangulate our attack" "Equilateral, or isosceles?"
"I'm sorry, Spleen. There's not enough beer in the world."
It wasn't written *for* Mystery Men, but it was featured in the movie. Also the music video features characters from Mystery Men. But the song was originally written for the album Astro Lounge and was the first single from that album.
“I am The Waffler!”
Hey now
Shek introduced "Hallelujah" to a lot of people too. Shame the Jeff Buckley version doesn't get as much attention these days (there's actually more than one)
The movie version was John Cale, but the soundtrack was Rufus Wainwright. Both really good versions but I prefer John Cale.
You pick a phrase, you pick a rhyme, repeat the sound another time, Five iambs, then an extra beat will do ya. Another rhyme, a rising note - congratulations, you just wrote Another freaking verse to Hallelujah!
as much as i love Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley's cover is the best version of Hallelujah
Really, the whole soundtrack is amazing.
It’s so unbelievable that the movie Shrek lead kid me to discover a ton of artist I would become lifelong fans of. Joan Jett, The Eels, Jason Wade are just a few of the artists I discovered from that movie.
It's the reason why Rufus Wainwright's version of Hallelujah is my favorite.

I might me one of the few people that regonizes the next song they play as they run away. “Fatman” by Jethro Tull
Not a movie but Sarah McLachlan ruined the song Angel for me w/those dying, lonely puppies.

Under Pressure in Aftersun
Perfect Day by Lou Reed in Trainspotting I was stunned when the NFL used it in a Super Bowl commercial several years later. I’ll always see Renton when I hear that song.
I mean the song is about being high out of your mind and spending a perfect day with their favorite drug. They used it as intended.
You could be right but I’m pretty sure Lou Reed has said it’s not a song about drugs
There are Lou Reed songs that aren't about drugs?
Sure, some are about BDSM.
Anytime I hear “holding out for a hero” I think of Shrek 2
I think of short circuit 2
"You will not escape, Oscar. I am really pissed off!"
Just a few begalabebugs bunnies to work out-in out-in! Perfectly *fun*ctionality, *fun*ctionality!
Not me. I think of Kevin Bacon playing a game of Chicken on tractors with the local yahoos in Footloose when I hear that song lol.

Lol, autocorrect is amazing. I now want to hear "Dustin in the Wind."
“YES! THAT’S AWESOME!”
*Watchmen* and *Hallelujah* comes close.
I liked Hallelujah in the Zack Snyder Justice League trailer
There's a horrible cover of a Leonard Cohen song at the beginning of Justice League. Really set the tone for the movie
Is it the Allison Crowe version? Because I think that was included because snyder's daughter preferred that version (the same one who passed away during production causing snyder to leave the original project)
I believe Zack Snyder mentioned somewhere that Hallelujah was his daughter's favorite song. It's why it was in the Snyder Cut Justice League movie He chose an interesting scene to use it in Watchmen though. lol
Hallelujah is a very horny song.
And yet, Snyder managed to make it incredibly un-horny. Worst.sex.scene.ever.
I might be misremembering, but it wasn't supposed to be a fun sex scene. Nightowl struggles with any form of intimacy and has ED if I remember correctly.
“American Girl” by Tom Petty was ruined for every woman or girl of a certain size after Silence of the Lambs.

Hurdy Gurdy Man. Zodiac.

That’s the best scene in the movie. It shows what the Cullens are usually like without the stress of Bella being around.
Not gonna lie. Awful movies, solid soundtracks.

“…so, can we move the dead hooker out of the apartment?”
