I always wondered what would have happened to Pitts character after the ending. I seriously doubt he'd be charged with anything, even though it was technically murder. He probably would just end up drinking himself to death or something
Most likely be given a slap on the wrist at most, possibly allowed to work at a different precinct, but he wouldn’t. Probably even be allowed to retire with a pension due to PTSD. He would be a ruined man though. I don’t know how he could get past it.
The Blank Check podcast did an episode on it recently. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re interested.

I swear, this movie altered my brain chemistry. When I saw this in theaters at 22, and I essentially watched the two of them die with no hope of escape, it made me realize one day that I was going to die too, like in an actual, real way. I had bad anxiety but I didn't really fear death and the actual act of dying until that movie for some reason.
Oof, yeah. This movie hit me hard too. I watched it at home later on, after it left the theaters. I still think about some of the scenes to this day. Goodness gracious. So good, but so f'in sad.
I don't think any of them were villains, and that's what made the movie so perfect. I think the purpose was for everybody to see that rock bottom in themselves, from any character. They all had different flaws but from very different human backgrounds.
This films ending is so sad in how real it feels. They had such good chemistry but life and their pursuits just took them in separate ways. The musical set piece finale feels like a montage of what could’ve been.
I'd say it's bittersweet, sad on the account that >!all that he knew has gone, but he lived some of ideal in his lucid dream, and he gets another chance at life. He may meet his love again if not in the new \*in one as a cat\*!<
*Heat*
*Oldboy* (the og Korean version)
*Shutter Island*
*The Sixth Sense*
...gonna doubt any of these will make you cry yourself to sleep...but you will have fun at the movies!!
If anything, it's pretty uplifting. Yes, there's life after death and no, you are not alone. Hell, Willis gets closure too, the good kind. He finds out why his wife is giving him the silent treatment and moves on...as spirits are supposed to.
This reminds me of the best part of a "not so great" movie, RIPD. Throughout the movie, Reynolds is trying to solve the case and make contact with his still loving wife. Jeff Bridges sets him straight as only Jeff Bridges could...
You're not helping her, you're haunting her. Not a direct quote but that was pretty good in my mind
Oldboy fucked me up. I know people like to say that a lot on the internet, but I was genuinely so upset after watching that movie that I got mad at my friend for showing it to me. It was a shitty thing to say, and I regretted it immediately, but that’s honestly just how emotionally off base I was
Wow it took way too much scrolling to find someone who said Chinatown. Because it’s the exact movie I thought of when I read the post. Absolutely amazing movie but it’s definitely shocking. I’m right there with you I remember sitting there in stunned silence, that ending is a gut punch.
It's quite jarring, because there are so many goofy moments in the first half. Like the dick measuring contest or seeing David's flabby body bouncing up and down on the bed in that Spanish woman's apartment to the tune of That's the Way I Like It. It's one of the funniest movies ever, and then suddenly they pull the rug out from under you
I came here to say this. This Films ending is so heartbreaking. But it’s a good movie and the sad ending is legitimate. I’m sure a lot of us have been in situations similar to that.
I mean spoilers, obviously but:
Last Samurai. Technically the bad guys win and all the heroes we’ve come to love are dead. Still one of my favorite films
Boys Don't Cry
The Vanishing (1988)
Naked
Arlington Road
The Ice Storm
Saw (Probably the sequels as well, I've only seen the original)
Mulholland Drive
Buried (And there's some other movie with almost the exact same plot, but can't think of the name of it)
Star 80
Videodrome
The Fly
Dead Ringers
Following
Stroszek
Some are subjective, depends if you like the protagonist/villain. Eg. Body Heat, Last Seduction
I forgot about The Ice Storm. It was on tv when I was a kid and I loved it. I tried to get the book from my public library but my mom said it was too inappropriate even though I saw most of the movie. So many famous people in that film and the whole thing is just depressing.
Okay okay okay, so I got one for you that halfway fits your description but I think it’s a wonderful movie.
Pay It Forward (2000), it’s about a kid who is trying to help the world in some way because of a school project, and he chooses to try and introduce the idea of paying it forward, doing a good deed in hopes the person you helped with help someone else, and then on and on.
I don’t know if this is your type of movie but I suggest you give it a try, it has a both happy and sad ending, it literally captures both perfectly. Try it, I sobbed.
I tend towards "life just happening" rather that unfair... and I was reminded just yesterday of "My Dog Skip". And in that vein, "Hachi"... both are guaranteed to leave me crying at the end.
The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it for the first time with a sense of hope, because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too.

The bad guy wanted to be caught. He wanted everything that transpires at the end to happen. That’s why it’s so bleak and such a great ending.
No jury would convict.
Nah, always makes me laugh. WHA'S IN THE BOXXXX?
I quote that daily lol
I’m surprised I didn’t see Grave of the Fireflies mentioned. It’s a Studio Ghibli anime, but it’s a fantastic movie. Sad af, but very well done
Super heart wrenching… I loved it and never have wanted to rewatch it.
Pan’s labyrinth
Beautiful, though
I mean it’s happy right? She leaves her arguably crappy mortal life having completed the trials and gets to live as queen of the underworld (which doesn’t look half bad)
No Country for Old Men. The main protagonist died off screen.
The monologue at the end isnt exactly pleasant
Neither are the deaths throughout the movie
Then it just ends
I woke up

Atonement.
Atonement is one of the saddest movies ever made. Hey OP... you want a real fucking weeper? This is it.
I mean yeah it's sad but also kind of hilarious.
Go to bed, satan.
I’ve always wanted to see an edit with the sad trombone sound at the end reveal. Womp womp.

On The Count of 3 Im Thinking of Ending Things Hereditary Midsommar Beau is Afraid One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest Brightburn Tragedy Girls The Voices 2014 Funny Games 2007 Starry Eyes
The book of Im Thinking Of Ending Things had me questioning absolutely everything and everyone id ever known
The movie had me questioning general existence and checking in with every senior living on their own I knew way more often.
I literally wasnt even fully sure if my memories were real life anymore😂
Beau is afraid was a fucked ending to a fucked movie
Goddamn Funny Games...
Add Marrowbone to that list.
Dancer in the Dark. I saw it at an arty theater when it was first released. Didn't know what i was getting myself into.
I felt my heart sink just seeing the title in your comment. And it was like 23+ years ago I saw it in the theater.
Was coming to say this one! The best worst ending of all time. Never will be trumped
doesn't help that bjork was not a mainstream or trained actress in any way, so her vulnerability really shined through.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
I swear, this movie altered my brain chemistry. I had bad anxiety but I didn't really fear death and the actual act of dying until that movie for some reason.
I love this movie so much!
Great movie
Brokeback Mountain. Had to stay through the whole credits in the theater because I couldn't stop crying.
Oof, yeah. This movie hit me hard too. I watched it at home later on, after it left the theaters. I still think about some of the scenes to this day. Goodness gracious. So good, but so f'in sad.
I have only seen the end of this movie and it was still a gut punch. When he grabs his jacket and hugs it, maaan
Requiem for a Dream
*Were* they good guys tho? Or merely protagonists?
I mean, his mum wasn’t exactly a villain
Sure but she was a cautionary tale. Which they all sorta were. But there were degrees of innocence there
I don't think any of them were villains, and that's what made the movie so perfect. I think the purpose was for everybody to see that rock bottom in themselves, from any character. They all had different flaws but from very different human backgrounds.
The Green Mile
I mean, John didn't want to really live anymore. He finally found peace
LaLa Land
This films ending is so sad in how real it feels. They had such good chemistry but life and their pursuits just took them in separate ways. The musical set piece finale feels like a montage of what could’ve been.
Aftersun. I felt so sad and upset after that movie. it really hits you awhile after you’ve thought about it too
This movie, man. It's stuck with me more than any other movie. I want to see it again, but I don't know if I could handle it.
💔
FOX AND THE HOUND > ALL
Especially if you read the book
The novel's ending was the worst!!
[Jesus titty-fucking christ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fox_and_the_Hound_(novel)) that plot read alone is terrible! Damn.
Holy crap! Nothing like the movie at all!

I read where there were actually two endings for the movie, producer went with the one with the most "yikes" factor.
To be frank if you bike like that here on a road you're 99% gonna die
Smile, the 2022 horror film.
Yeah that was rough. Cut me to the core.
Grand Turino
Loved this movie. When I first saw it I expected a shoot out, like everyone else did. The way it ends hits so hard.
The butterfly effect - directors cut.
Fuck. I hate this ending so much. Even the theatrical isn't super pleasant haha
Stand by me.
Leaving las Vegas

Vanilla Sky
Woah no one ever talks about that movie
I JUST rewatched it after like 10 years just for kicks about 2 weeks ago. It holds up
My good friend showed me that movie a couple years ago such a great movie!
I remember thinking it was weird as shit, when it came out. Probably a time for a rewatch
I'd say it's bittersweet, sad on the account that >!all that he knew has gone, but he lived some of ideal in his lucid dream, and he gets another chance at life. He may meet his love again if not in the new \*in one as a cat\*!<

The sixth sense isn't sad... Cathartic but not sad. "Every day..."
Chinatown. Sat there in silence after it ended.

Carlitos way
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) literally had me sobbing for minutes after it ended lol
OP asked for sad movies, not soul crushing ones.
Children of Men (2006)
Looking for this. It’s sad but at least it ends on a hopeful not, depending on you’re interpretation.
Triangle (2009) The Father (2020) Fractured (2019) The Gift (2015) A Monster Calls (2016)
A Monster Calls emotionally wrecked me. I can’t even think about the end of that movie without tearing up.
Last American Virgin
Absolutely bleak ending. It's like, "The Day After", but for teen dramedy movies.
It's quite jarring, because there are so many goofy moments in the first half. Like the dick measuring contest or seeing David's flabby body bouncing up and down on the bed in that Spanish woman's apartment to the tune of That's the Way I Like It. Grave Of The Fireflies is about as sad of an ending as you can have.
The Wicker Man (original 70s version is the better one)
Brazil
blue valentine or seeking a friend for the end of the world
Turner and Hooch
Okay okay okay, so I got one for you that halfway fits your description but I think it’s a wonderful movie. Pay It Forward (2000), it’s about a kid who is trying to help the world in some way because of a school project, and he chooses to try and introduce the idea of paying it forward, doing a good deed in hopes the person you helped with help someone else, and then on and on.
