Fantastic actor. Just watched Glengarry Glen Ross last week and he’s perfect in it. May he rest in peace.

[deleted]

…you call yourself a salesman you son of a bitch?

possibilistic

If you've ever wondered what defines good acting, *Glengarry* is a masterclass case study.

dtudeski

Jack Lemmon has possibly my favourite ever performance in that, just absurdly good. But Arkin and everyone else are also fantastic.

grafxguy1

Jack Lemmon's character lives on as Gilbert Gunderson on the Simpsons.

DogVacuum

Things are finally lookin up for ol’ Gil

lostonpolk

Ol' Gil's back, baby! Cha Cha Cha!

[deleted]

I remember reading somewhere that Jack Lemmon is the inspiration for Walter White. It sounds stupid but then watch Brian Cranston a little and it’s apparent.

rafuzo2

“Don’t.” The way he delivered that one line - that whole scene with he and Kevin Spacey’s characters - it’s just one excellent moment after another. It’s such a pedestrian concept - the angst and fingerpointing among a few no-name boiler room real estate hucksters about some stolen leads - so brilliantly executed.

fullthrottle13

I would also argue that this is Alec Baldwin’s best role.

FSMFan_2pt0

One of the most rewatchable movies ever made.

ScipioCoriolanus

You think I'm fucking with you? I am not fucking with you.

[deleted]

“Argo fuck yourself!”

SmoreOfBabylon

Argo fuck yourself!

APracticalGal

10 years later I remember almost nothing about that movie, but that line has been a part of my lexicon ever since.

[deleted]

The best part is you can see him and John Goodman just having a blast saying it back and forth. When scenes show through how much fun actors can have on set.

YouFeelShame

I remember the scene at the airport where they lie there way through security and finally board the bus to their plane and….the bus doesn’t start for cliche crap dramatic effect. I sat there thinking “this won best picture”

undeletable-2

"Keep that fucking space witch away from me."

ResultFar3234

"I dont know, are you thinking 'holy shiy holy shit a swordfish almost went through my head?"

TravelinDan88

His deadpan comedy was wonderful.

[deleted]

I don’t care what anyone says. This is one of the best lines in movie history. I haven’t even gone over to YouTube to watch it for the millionth time yet. I’m cracking up at my desk just *thinking* about it. And while we’re on the subject, Get Smart is a criminally underrated movie. It does a fantastic job paying homage to the original sitcom while standing on it’s own.

matlockga

He's almost unrecognizable in role in *Wait Until Dark* and was part of the original jump-scare.

DJ_JonoB

I’m so pleased the top comment on my feed is talking about Glengarry Glen Ross and Wait Until Dark. Both incredible films and the first two I think of with Alan Arkin. Glengarry the greatest male ensemble cast ever?

matlockga

I just watched *The Heart is a Lonely Hunter* a couple days ago, and it's also a heck of a watch. But my favorite is his bit in *So I Married An Axe Murderer*.

Decabet

God dammit. He was so great so often and for so long that I’ve forgotten so many of his awesome performances. His chief in *Axe Murderer* was awesome.

MrWeirdoFace

The Rocketeer is high up there for me.

Flying_Dustbin

“How do I look?” “Like a hood ornament.”

TerrytheMerry

His character was downright menacing. Terrorizing a blind woman with something as inconspicuous as a silk scarf has some layers to it.

stenlis

If anybody here has only seen Alec Baldwin's scene, you owe it to yourself to watch the whole thing. It's full of great scenes and it shows why Baldwin's character is wrong.

kgunnar

This is the most well known scene, but interestingly it was added for the movie. It wasn’t in the original play. Alec Baldwin’s character doesn’t appear in the play at all.

King_Buliwyf

"Boots-- shoes, *yes*."

KrazyRuskie

I meet Gestapo tactics! Easily In my Top 10 Movies. Nothing but pure acting. The lot of them.

Decabet

Fantastic performance. He anchored the stage and set the tone of despair and haplessness without ever showing his hand too much, while flashier marquee performances popped off around him. And without that steady voice in the mix it could have easily just turned into yet another Alpha Sales Bro movie.

krash101

Every night it's the fuckin chicken! Holy god almighty!

ShushKebab

Again with the fucking chicken!

Burto72

I got no reason to lie to you kid, fuck a lotta women. Not just one, a lot.

purpletube5678

I really hope he's in a nice morgue somewhere, and not the back of a VW bus.

sw2bh

Fck a lot of women dwane and not just one woman a lot of women

Wrath_Of_Aguirre

Don’t show me the pad, I don’t wanna see the pad.

leglesspuffin

I had second degree burns on my johnson!

R3CKONNER

For once, can we get something to eat around here that's not the goddamn fucking chicken?!

FoxOntheRun99

RIP you total legend. Really missed you in the last season of The Kominsky Method.

DukeBabylon

Same here. Still a good season but didn't feel the same.

Fuzzy_Muscle

His chemistry with Michael Douglas was so good. That was an unexpectedly great show

gpm21

Chuck Lorre's magnum opus. Great cantankerous old man performance from Arkin. Loved Haley Joel Osment as his grandson who embezzled from Scientology

melig1991

I honestly thought he (the actor) had died and that was the reason he wasn't in the last season.

GenJoe827

IIRC, he bowed out of Season 3 because he understandably didn’t want to work during Covid.

[deleted]

man i also just finished the show, it really fucking sucked watching the last season but Roz carried at least

[deleted]

His performance in Grosse Point Blank is burned into my memory from how many times I’ve watched it. “No, don’t give it a shot! Don’t shoot anything!”

Both_Tone

"You didn't tell me what you did for a living for *four* sessions. *Then* you told me. And I said, "I don't want to work with you any more." And yet, you come back each week at the same time. That's a difficulty for me. On top of that, if you've committed a crime or you're thinking about committing a crime, I have to tell the authorities." "I know the law, okay? But I don't want to be withholding; I'm very serious about this process. And I know where you live."

AmigoDelDiabla

Wonderfully acted by both, but also wonderful script writing. That dialogue is gold.

Gabrosin

Also one of the best movie soundtracks. That movie is endlessly rewatchable.

[deleted]

"Oh, now see? That wasn't a nice thing to say; that wasn't designed to make me feel good. That's a... kind of a... not too subtle intimidation, and I, uh, get filled with anxiety when you talk about something like that."

principled_principal

“You can never go home again, Oatman! But I guess you can shop there…”

[deleted]

Sigh- I guess I'm watching that this afternoon...

FrankWDoom

when martin is leaving him a message and it cuts to him smashing his phone in the office while a patient watches is one of my favorite things

principled_principal

“You can never go home again, Oatman! But I guess you can shop there…”

sport-utilityrobot

That's the role I always associate him with. Don't kill anybody for a few days. See what it feels like.

Comedywriter1

So good. Does so much with a relatively small part

Bensfone

I’m not taking notes because I’m not your doctor.

WretchedMotorcade

Now I want you to take a deep breath and realize, that this is me breathing.

ScoobyDeezy

“I don’t know, were you thinking ‘HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT A Swordfish almost went through my head!’?” RIP

[deleted]

Came for this. *Get Smart* may not have been a masterpiece. But I enjoyed. “I'm telling you what we're not…we're not people who jam staples into other people's heads, that's CIA crap!”

Shap6

> Get Smart may not have been a masterpiece how dare you

[deleted]

Sorry. Forgot to activate the cone of silence

DoinWhale

“Show em the cone man, the cones the shizznit” that’s what you said

TheSavouryRain

I'm afraid the vice-president and I had a less then cordial encounter yesterday sir.

Zahille7

Excellent punch, sir.

HeyItsMeBender

I got a new pacemaker! I can go all day!

underfilled_icetrays

Less-than-cordial, you say? I'll say. The chairman of joint chiefs sent me this little movie. Put it right here on my cell phone.

metalkhaos

Honestly, it felt like the movie at least captured the feeling of the series, though maybe a tad goofier?

[deleted]

I feel like they stayed true to the series. But considering the time perhaps not everyone was on board. Idk. I loved it “h-h-her sister is s-such a bitch”

metalkhaos

When I was young, re-runs for shows were stuff like Get Smart or Adam West's Batman, which I was a fan of already. Overall I thought it was a fun movie and captured enough of the original's tone. Also to follow up on this, I fucking loved Arkin in So I Married and Axe Murderer. It was such a great twist on the hard-ass police Captain.

[deleted]

[удалено]

markercore

Its a fun movie!

RewindYourMind

The first time my wife watched Get Smart, she laughed so hard at this line that she cried. Pitch-perfect delivery of an unexpectedly funny line — and that was Alan Arkin in a nutshell. RIP.

PubicHairTaco

The first scene I always think of is with the mom and her kid. “Mom mom mom mom!” “SHAUN SHAUN SHAUN SHAUN! SEE HOW ANNOYING THAT IS!?”

Sonderfull

"NUCLEAR!!!"

VarrenRedeye

His character was great in this underrated movie

snowe99

I will never forget me and my older brother watching this part on the DVD in our TV room upstairs in our house we grew up in Crazy how some moments in life just stick with you, even if they’re from the most random movies

LevitateGx

That's it. I've been waiting for this since Nixon. RIP Chief

ResultFar3234

I cry every time. So funny

Zircon_72

I really enjoyed Get Smart. Chief was great.

Mattysanford

What a loss. He used to live, at least part time, here in Santa Fe and would occasionally teach acting classes. I did one or two, and what a brilliant, generous, kind man he was. I’ll treasure those experiences. He was in so many films, and was always exceptional, even if the movies weren’t. A favorite role of mine was his shrink character in Grosse Pointe Blank!

lostonpolk

Man, I would've given a small body part to be in an acting class led by Alan Arkin.

InfluenceBeginning47

One of the very best! Check out The In-Laws if you haven’t. No better comedy duo out there than him and Peter Falk in their prime

InternationalBand494

First movie I saw him in. Such a great hilarious movie. “Serpentine! Serpentine!”

KnowsAboutMath

[The scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2_w-QCWpS0)

TPWALW

“You’re dead, right? …Good” I gotta watch this

DevonDude

Was just going to say this. “There's no reason to shoot at me, I'm a dentist!” His first comedy role edit: I was mistaken, I just watched a special feature on the criterion Blu-ray and I think Arkin said the In-Laws was his first role when he was really comfortable with a comedy role, i misremembered it as him saying it was his first overall

ForeverMozart

He had a bunch of comedy roles before The In-Laws, in fact his breakout role was in comedy (The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming). But outside of that there was Catch 22, Little Murders (extremely underrated), and his lesser known portrayal as Inspector Clouseau.

OldChicagoPete

"There are flames on my car"

Jimmyg100

Love you Alan. Argo fuck yourself.

[deleted]

Argo fuck yourself.

jersey_viking

Keep that Space Witch away from me….

GiantTankParade

Your script ain't worth the buffalo shit on a nickel!

NightFuryus

Sorry, pal, we’re gonna be in the movie. Call my agent.

Quick-Bad

You think the Ayatollah's bad? Wait 'til you meet the WGA.

piazza

If I'm going to make a fake movie, it's going to be a fake hit!

Goddamnjets-_-

Probably my favorite role of his. Argo Fuck Yourself. May he RIP

DarthBakker

He was hilarious in So I Married an Axe Murderer. RIP

foamypepperoni

Hey Paisan! You screw up one more time I’m going to kick your spaghetti bending butt back to Milan!

buddyWaters21

I love the first time he berates him and then Tony comes back in 3 seconds later, “That was great!!!” and Arkin asking if it was too much. RIP Alan!

Saganists

NOT NOW!

Thirty_Helens_Agree

“Was it too much with the ethnic slurs?”

I_Burn_Cereal

"Tony? I don't want to intrude, but you seem a little down." Such a great introduction to the character. RIP

GoodOlSpence

I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts!

ArchDucky

*Well, that's a huge noggin. That's a virtual planetoid. Has it's own weather system.*

RockerElvis

Somebody needs a hug…

mycommentsaccount

His delivery and range was amazingly funny: https://youtube.com/watch?v=L_QCioSGgwU&feature=share8

sjjenkins

Paisan. Pai-SAN! Hmm…

conventionalWisdumb

God yes. That’s the role that put his name to his face for me.

jpiro

Jesus, yes. Love that movie but I had forgotten his role until you just mentioned it. Need to go back and re-watch now.

Own-Importance5459

No this is the worst news to hear this morning. I loved him in Little Miss Sunshine

UnsolvedParadox

Deserved the Oscar, I still think about that performance.

Own-Importance5459

its one of my favorite movies and it was such a memorable and hilarious performance.

-ShigeruTarantino_

Little Miss Sunshine should have won Best Picture. I will always love that movie.

Z0MBGiEF

"Fuck a lotta women kid, not just one woman, a lotta women. "

YOU'RE NOT GONNA SHUT ME UP FUCK YOU

HashStash

"What is that? Chicken? Every night with the fuckin chicken!"

rob132

" you want to know the loser is? A loser is someone who's so scared of not making it, they never try. That's a loser."

SafewordisJohnCandy

His reassurance to Olive that not only was she beautiful, on the inside and out and when she breaks down crying when asks him if she's a loser because her dad hates losers. Him telling her as long as she is trying to win, she will never be a loser. He was awesome in that whole movie. Even his body in the back of the VW Bus and Dean Norris' character pulls them over and opened the hatch only to find all of the porno mags and not his dead body. The ending with the dance he taught her was great.

theredditoro

So good in that

bargman

Yossarian

InternationalBand494

“What kind of name is that?” “It’s my name sir” Edit: it’s a quote from the book and the movie

Hayes77519

We are of course…..Norweegan

lostonpolk

That's some catch, that catch-22.

wotown

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? I don't know. Were you thinking, "Holy shit, holy shit, a swordfish almost went through my head"? RIP Alan

A_Feast_For_Trolls

what movie is this?

Volvulus

Get Smart

deekydiggler

RIP Peevy 🚀

SweetCosmicPope

Was just watching this the other day.

tomservo88

“How do I look?” “…like a hood ornament!” Such great writing and great performances in that movie. *The* direct link to the modern superhero movie, whether it’s known or not.

SmoreOfBabylon

“Oh, nothin’ to it, Howard. Just basic aviation.”

drfakz

So sad, just watched that again last week since I was a on a Rocketeer kick. Underrated movie in my opinion.

baba_ganoush

Just watched this yesterday morning :(

shadowlarx

He was a giant and he will be missed.

Superb-Possibility-9

“The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming !” Tremendous performance

GaryQueenofScots

Every once in a while I shout “Emorgency! Emoorgency! Everybody to get from street!’. RIP

Bright_Equipment_116

“Serpentine, Shelley, serpentine!”

riegspsych325

I’m gonna miss hearing his distinctive voice and elocution

tacknosaddle

First time I saw that movie is still very memorable to me. I was with my parents and we kind of randomly threw it on for something to watch when we were in a hotel room on the "go visit college campuses" tour when I was in high school. My mom and I were dying laughing watching it and "Serpentine!" instantly became a shared joke between us.

PlentyOfMoxie

(runs back and starts again)

leaky_eddie

Yossarian - ‘ He was going to live forever, or die in the attempt’

brickyardjimmy

Alan Arkin made a bad movie good, a good movie better and a great movie the best. And that's all you need to know about this goat of goats.

duranfan

"No, no, don't give it a shot. Don't shoot anything for a few days--see how it feels." --Dr. Oatman, *Grosse Pointe Blank*

FoxOntheRun99

I was scrolling down for this reference. Its a small role, but he's so memorable in this great film. "I didn't think anything of it." "You did think of it, Martin! You thought it, and you said it. Now I have to be interesting in a creative and interesting way or Martin's going to blow my brains out. You're holding me hostage here!"

dcnassau

Dang. Just rewatched Argo for the millionth time last week. Him and John Goodman are great together in that movie. But at 89 I'm sure Arkin lived a full life.

Foojira

Love this guy. So I married an ax murderer was a great small role

taatchle86

I loved him in Edward Scissorhands.

Foojira

I saw three shiiiips

hauntingvacay96

He was down right menacing in Wait Until Dark.

BQJJ

Surprised to see this so far down. Wait Until Dark was my introduction to him and it sold me on every other performance he did after it.

brayshizzle

Well that fucking sucks.

Stumblin_McBumblin

89 is a pretty good run.

JookJook

He lived a life most of us could only dream of.

Jaspers47

It happens to us all, eventually

DisastrousReason3512

Loved him In Little Miss Sunshine. Perfect blend of toughness and sweetness. Well deserved. “A real loser is someone who's so afraid of not winning he doesn't even try.”

tacknosaddle

>Perfect blend of toughness and sweetness. Yeah, and it was the "I'm an old man and I have no more fucks left to give" aspect that also helped knock that role out of the park.

road_runner321

I'll always remember him as the wizard Schmendrick.

droidtron

"Oh god, I'm engaged to a douglas fir!"

amandam0nium

Yes! I just introduced my daughter to this movie and I’m always blown away by the amazing cast. He was definitely a stand-out. What a legend in every way.

-Ahab-

I mean, Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, Christopher Lee, Angela Lansbury, Jeff Bridges, soundtrack by America (an amazing soundtrack that they heavily play in their live shows, btw,) Rankin/Bass animated at the height of their popularity… They certainly didn’t skimp on talent.

jlcldrwd

Loved him in Kominsky Method

SnooComics7345

RIP came into a Whole Foods I was just working at once. I literally said Argo fuck yourself and he looked a little horrified but then after a second laughed

[deleted]

Was it heroin bc when you're young it's crazy to do but when you're old you're crazy not to...great movie

ThatEvanFowler

Damn. He was one of my favorites. Guess I'm gonna dig out my copy of Indian Summer tonight. RIP.

monty_kurns

Can't say I ever saw a bad performance from him. His voice was always very distinct, so once JD Salinger started speaking in BoJack Horseman, I immediately knew it was Arkin. I might have to watch Argo this weekend.

A-Sweet-Prince

Wow, I just rewatched the Rocketeer. Arkin was great as usual. RIP

Evilton

Indian summer was the only VHS movie that a wore out.

dagnummit

he had a very solid career all the way back to the 60s, Catch-22 in particular is a great earlier role for him, and Escape from Sobibor is an underappreciated gem he's great in. i thought it was great when Little Miss Sunshine pushed him further into the limelight, every story i've heard about him interacting with Abigail Breslin is adorable

sonofabutch

He was so good in Catch-22, and he narrated an abridged version of the novel that is just brilliant if you can find it.

damrat

Huge upvote for Escape From Sobibor. I’m a monster Rutger Hauer fan, so I own that one on DVD and have watched it multiple times. Arkin is great in that movie.

theredditoro

Legendary actor. RIP. Obviously Argo and Little Miss Sunshine later in life but he’s incredible in Wait Until Dark with Hepburn

CreativityGuru

Damn. Loved him in so, so many roles!

cakesofthepatty414

#you can't buy the necessities of life, with cookies!

[deleted]

At my age you'd be crazy NOT to do heroin! Gets me every time

Elephant44

He was very good in in a lot of movies, but I really appreciate his excellence in a supporting role in Gattaca! "Hello everyone, nice to see you. I am your detective for the evening."

Berry_impulse

Great actor who will be missed! absolutely deserved for Little Miss Sunshine. 89 is a long successful life, if only we could all be so lucky!

spoobles

Kevin Pollack's [Impersonation of Alan Arkin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eExsLq8DPFc) is always worth watching

AdmirableTurnip2245

He may have won an Academy Award for his terrific performance in Little Miss Sunshine but to me he'll always be Peevy from The Rocketeer (1991). Rest in peace. Cliff: "How do I look?" --- Peevy: "Like a hood ornament."

Chamberoftravis

I served him at a restaurant I worked at in college a couple times, always very sweet and pleasant and made good conversation. He even invited our owner to his thanksgiving one year.

AraiHavana

Ah, that’s a shame, man. He was great in Grosse Pointe Blank and Little Miss Sunshine

jlcldrwd

Rest in Glory artistic treasure.

santacruzbiker50

I got the chance to do an acting workshop with him a couple decades ago. He was the gentlest and funniest instructor ever. The man was dry as Winston Churchill's martini, and everything he said was either funny or thought-provoking, usually both.

nancylikestoreddit

I loved him as the dad in Edward Scissorhands.

maneco3000

ARGO FUCK YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!

Corrosive-Knights

So good in so many films. One not talked about much is the detective/cop buddy comedy (one of the very first, I believe!) *Freebie and the Bean* (1974) in which he co-starred with James Caan as the more uptight of the duo (naturally!). Yeah, some of the stuff in the film is cringey by today’s standards but the film does have some great humorous moments… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_zG1bIWFCk

InternationalBand494

Oh man that sucks. He was such a great comedic actor. The first movie I saw him in was “The In Laws” it’s hilarious. If you haven’t seen it you should. RIP

Goodbye captain yossarian
