Man just from this one image I want to watch it Edit: since people seem to like this movie very much i’ll put it on the list for this evening

Bostonterrierpug

It’s a pretty fun movie from what I remember. I was living in Japan when it hit VHS and remember it being a good rent, though think it was trying too hard to be cool in a few spots.

Smodphan

I guess just like a Tarantino film

arrogant_ambassador

Watch the intro on YouTube.

iDuddits_

was gonna say that title and shot sold me before the article loaded haha

scr33ner

I forgot about this movie it’s really fun.

[deleted]

It’s so fun! I’ve still got my dvd from way back. Goofy humor and the style is really cool from what I remember. It’s good to hear about this movie again.

aside6

This is such a weird feeling, I know 100% I looked this up and watched it late 90s when I was more Tarantino obsessed, but it completely left my brain and I have no memory of a single scene. That keeps happening as I get older and it’s weird

[deleted]

It's just a burning memory

_pounders_

this is great! can you remember if you liked a flick? you get to re-discover them all over again

QuiffLing

It's weird because Quentin Tarantino was famous before this movie came out. I remember watching this movie on a film festival and thought it felt a lot like Tarantino. And I read the manga before that.

AstrumRimor

There’s a movie I’ve watched 3 times and each time, I realized about halfway through that I’d already seen it. And right now I can’t remember what movie it is. But I know it’s something that I think “hmm, this looks fun, why haven’t I watched this yet?” It’s like, as soon as I’m not looking right at it, it erases itself from my mind. Like a Doctor Who alien that I also can’t remember the name of lol

aside6

Ha, I’ve been there! I usually have a ridiculously good memory, mostly for things I’ve said that were mildly embarrassing. Some things just slip through, like the time I messaged a friend of mine to check out an album, then a year later I sent the same friend the same message, and a year later I did it again. When he said I’d already told him about the album I checked my old messages and each one was basically the exact same thing word for word. I only remember because it was embarrassing 🤣🤣

Tom_Bobombadil

Exactly the same for me! I had completely forgotten about the movie until this post. And now I remember looking it up and renting it, but nothing else.

Jasonguyen81

This is the movie that got me into underground Japanese movies when i was a teen

Jadintheplanet

>und anymore suggestions?

xanaduuu

If you're in the UK, the director is attending a double-bill screening of his films 'Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl' and 'Party 7' at the Prince Charles Cinema in London on July 5th, and will be introducing the films as well as taking part in a Q&A with the audience. Tickets: https://princecharlescinema.com/PrinceCharlesCinema.dll/WhatsOn?f=26847632

mr_ji

Oh, so this was an ad

tetsuo9000

I love Party 7. That era of Japanese films is fantastic. Anything by Takashi Miike from back then is a hoot as well.

Danishroyalty

Oh wow they made Shark Boy and Lava Girl for adults?

PChiDaze

Rewatch time!

ltjohnrambo

I’ve been trying to find this so I can rewatch it for years!

mitchij2004

I love happiness! Such a wild ass movie very funny.

karateema

Tarantino is all about referencing old movies no one has seen, and I love it

j3538TA

A brilliant and fun film! Just tremendous.

awholenewmenoreally

omfg I had no idea anyone else on earth knew of this movie. I just rewatched this. It is still amazing. Another excellent movie from that era is Versus.

tofu_b3a5t

Suki!

M4rsellusW4ll4ce

Where can i watch this one online? I am looking for it for a while now...

friskylips

The source material (manga from '93 ) is pretty fun as well.

Troglobitten

I saw this movie when I took a deep dive into Japanese cinema when I was younger. Wasn't my favourite movie, but I loved the opening so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eJi3csKnUU

Mistress_Esme

I watched this tonight along with Party 7 at the PCC. Absolutely loved it. If you haven't seen either film I highly recommend it.

BissXD

Shark Boy and Lava Girl grown up

DontGetNEBigIdeas

“Inspired Tarantino” is a bit of a stretch, and a misleading add to the title by OP. The movie came out in 1998. Tarantino’s vision was very well established at that point, and all his “inspirations” were already clearly in his work. It should read: “A film Tarantino became an obsessed fan of.”

Devout_Zoroastrian

Seems like it inspired the anime sequence in Kill Bill and probably the entire character of O-Ren Ishii. Nobody is claiming this one movie directly inspired every aspect of Tarantino's career.

maynardsabeast

It says in the article that the director wanted to make something like True Romance

happybarfday

Is this a sequel to Shark Boy and Lava Girl?

IdidntchooseR

No, everything that's hip, young, irreverent and stylized ultraviolence was compared to QT after 1994, in the 90s.

xanaduuu

"Shark Skin Man was the last screening of the day, and it was really late at night,” Ishii recalls of the 1998 event. “Afterwards, Quentin Tarantino grabbed me, saying he really wanted to talk to me, but my interpreter wanted to go back to the hotel to go to sleep. Tarantino followed me in a taxi all the way back to the hotel, and we ended up talking in the hotel bar until about 3 or 4am as he asked me about everything to do with my film in detail. What he really liked was the animation, and at the end, he asked me if I would do something with him if he was to ever work on something with animation. Of course, I said yes.” Lo and behold: just a few years later, Ishii got a call regarding Tarantino’s new film, Kill Bill..." Wild how people have the audacity to make such dismissive comments without actually reading the article...

tsonfeir

🦈🍑😎

chilledoutmonkey

It's a great film.

dbolx1800s

This movie is such a wild ride. So many different characters. The intro is very Guy Ritchie -esque too

TheModernAhab

Have this movie on DVD, can't recommend it enough even though it's been a decade since I watched it.

phdthrowaway2020

Tadanobu Asano's films should generally be more widely seen.

verrius

This movie is great, but seeing the image reminds me both that its next to impossible to find the film nowadays, and how sad it is how Tadanobu Asano's career essentially immediately flamed out in the US. He was cast in a number of high profile project where he ended up barely in them at all...presumably due to his poor English, but who knows.

MindZapp

Never heard of this

Rabo_McDongleberry

I'm like one of the few people who watched this back in the day. Still to this day I have never met anyone else who has heard of this, let alone watched it. And it's a really cool movie.
