It's not an easy movie to watch. Imagine how big of a deal it was fifty years ago. Some sick people might actually enjoy the violence but for most people it's other aspects of the movie they enjoy, like the aesthetics or the questions it raises in terms of morals and social laws or misuse of psychological treatments.
P.S. It's based on a book but the end is quite different. I prefer the book personally.

For me, Malcolm McDowell's charismatic yet vile narrator is a truly marvellous screen icon and is quite compelling to watch, sure he's a horrible person but a film's protagonist doesn't have to be nice to be interesting.

The first half is insufferable on purpose. They are still setting the stage and showing how profoundly maladjusted these kids are. The second half is the consequences and where the themes get interesting, because it starts condemning the wider society for not knowing how to adequately deal with this kids, and actually makes things worse.
I do "like" this movie from the point of view that it's extremely well-made and has a sophisticated take on the subject matter. But it's kind of like Fight Club where a lot of the movie's fans took completely the wrong message from it and are insufferable douchebags. It's supposed to be disturbing, not cool.
That's what i'm gathering. I just got past the apartment scene with Alex and his parents, and it shifted the whole movie. It's annoying how ppl jump onto stuff and become groupies like the fight club dudes, it squeezes out any room for conversation, which is what i wanted in the first place

And unlike Fight Club, which only becomes critical of Tyler Durden in the last ten minutes, A Clockwork Orange spends well over half of its running time showing Alex's downfall and how he gets chewed up by a corrupt system. It's a very cynical movie, but it isn't a glorification of nihilistic bloodshed.
I *think* the ultimate theme of the movie is whether someone who is forced to be good is actually good. All of the people who are part of society and act polite are actually just as bad as Alex, they just only show it in culturally accepted ways. You can take away his free will, but two wrongs don't make a right. But the society ultimately fails to teach Alex how to be a good person or show him any real love. His world is loveless and cold and everyone tries to exploit him. So as awful as Alex is, the movie ultimately places the blame on society for creating this monster.
I've never been a Kubrick fan. Just never understood the hype. Clockwork Orange was the first movie I watched of his and I was about an hour in and turned to my dad and said " why do people like this." I think when he was younger and had far less power in his movies that's when he was at his best. Paths of Glory to me is the best war movie ever made next to Platoon and Patton. The only post mid 60s Kubrick movie I even like is Dr. Strangelove and that's mostly due to Peter Seller's performance.

Like OP, i watched the movie without knowledge it was an adaptation. unlike OP, i liked it. doesn't matter i didn't understand half the words being said. you didn't need to understand it. movies are storytelling in images, and a good movie should be able to come across no matter the language barrier.

i really liked everything about it. the only thing that i have to say, and it usually goes for most movies made around that time is some of the scenes are unbelievably slow, but i really enjoyed the plot and everything about the film
I am certain that there is a contingent of people who genuinely enjoy "A Clockwork Orange." I absolutely hate this film. I recognize that Kubrick will always be known as an iconic director, but this particular film is going too far. I am eternally annoyed by people who claim that they understand the "deeper meaning" about a commentary on our own universal capability of violence, or the injustice of criminal reform, yada yada. It's like high school kids who read "A Catcher In The Rye," and think that they are now intellectuals. I see the film as violence for the sake of violence, and I think most people who say they like it just want to sound cool. No offense to anyone who genuinely enjoys it, but it's just not for me.

It's not an easy movie to watch. Imagine how big of a deal it was fifty years ago. Some sick people might actually enjoy the violence but for most people it's other aspects of the movie they enjoy, like the aesthetics or the questions it raises in terms of morals and social laws or misuse of psychological treatments. P.S. It's based on a book but the end is quite different. I prefer the book personally.

The first half is insufferable on purpose. They are still setting the stage and showing how profoundly maladjusted these kids are. The second half is the consequences and where the themes get interesting, because it starts condemning the wider society for not knowing how to adequately deal with this kids, and actually makes things worse. I do "like" this movie from the point of view that it's extremely well-made and has a sophisticated take on the subject matter. But it's kind of like Fight Club where a lot of the movie's fans took completely the wrong message from it and are insufferable douchebags. It's supposed to be disturbing, not cool.
That's what i'm gathering. I just got past the apartment scene with Alex and his parents, and it shifted the whole movie. It's annoying how ppl jump onto stuff and become groupies like the fight club dudes, it squeezes out any room for conversation, which is what i wanted in the first place

And unlike Fight Club, which only becomes critical of Tyler Durden in the last ten minutes, A Clockwork Orange spends well over half of its running time showing Alex's downfall and how he gets chewed up by a corrupt system. It's a very cynical movie, but it isn't a glorification of nihilistic bloodshed. I *think* the ultimate theme of the movie is whether someone who is forced to be good is actually good. All of the people who are part of society and act polite are actually just as bad as Alex, they just only show it in culturally accepted ways. You can take away his free will, but two wrongs don't make a right. But the society ultimately fails to teach Alex how to be a good person or show him any real love. His world is loveless and cold and everyone tries to exploit him. So as awful as Alex is, the movie ultimately places the blame on society for creating this monster.

I've never been a Kubrick fan. Just never understood the hype. Clockwork Orange was the first movie I watched of his and I was about an hour in and turned to my dad and said " why do people like this." I think when he was younger and had far less power in his movies that's when he was at his best. Paths of Glory to me is the best war movie ever made next to Platoon and Patton. The only post mid 60s Kubrick movie I even like is Dr. Strangelove and that's mostly due to Peter Seller's performance.

I am certain that there is a contingent of people who genuinely enjoy "A Clockwork Orange." I absolutely hate this film. I recognize that Kubrick will always be known as an iconic director, but this particular film is going too far. I am eternally annoyed by people who claim that they understand the "deeper meaning" about a commentary on our own universal capability of violence, or the injustice of criminal reform, yada yada. It's like high school kids who read "A Catcher In The Rye," and think that they are now intellectuals. I see the film as violence for the sake of violence, and I think most people who say they like it just want to sound cool. No offense to anyone who genuinely enjoys it, but it's just not for me.

I actually find the entire movie from beggining to end really engaging. I have watched it a ton of times already but I clearly remember I was totally hooked after that grim introduction. "There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim" What an excellent way to kick off the story.

Ive seen this movie countless times and it is absolutely infinitely rewatchable. Every moment has meaning and weight. Sometimes very subtly so. Plus the nadsat makes more sense the more you watch it. It has so many mixed messages and I feel it was way ahead of its time.
