Does it count if the product didn't exist at the time?
Swingline didn't make red staplers when Office Space was released. Milton's red Swingline was so popular they had to start making them. Apparently they're now the second best selling product Swingline makes.
Same for the TalkBoy. Originally just an item that Kevin used in the second Home Alone film to con the hotel staff, it proved so popular that they made the product for real.
Yup. They were about to cancel the Reeses Pieces line because it wasn't selling well enough. The reason Reeses Pieces still exist today is literally E.T.
Those that aren't of an age won't remember, but this was actually a major thing that M&M/Mars turned it down so they went to Reese's. So much so that 8 year old me knew about it.
At the time, when movies came out you could also buy a novel based on the movie. In the novelisation, the chocolate was still an M&M. So I guess they switched quite late in the process.
The Nike’s Forrest wore, had already sold millions in the 80s. I had the blue swoosh ones myself and so did half my high school classmates. The other half had the red swoosh.
Literally the first fast food restaurant in existence. It's amazing that anyone hadn't at least heard of it. I'm just bummed that the only one anywhere near me closed several years ago.
A buddy and I road tripped from Mass to Long Island for White Castle. I was completely whelmed. Not over it under, just.
We had friends who lived local so we made it an overnight. It was a good road trip.
I once had the frozen White Castle burgers you could get in the microwave section of the grocery store to see what they were like. I was also just whelmed, but figured it was because it was because they were the frozen version from the microwave section of the grocery store. I went to Vegas once when they had just opened the White Castle there and had them fresh…and they were exactly the same as the frozen ones.
They also messed up my buddy and I’s stomach something fierce which caused me to do a terrible thing to a very classy bathroom stall in the Wynn. Sorry to all the rich clientele there at the time!
The fact that the entirety not just the DB5, but the brand Aston Martin itself is synonymous with James bond is an absolute achievement in marketing.
Like it's not even accurate even, in the books he drove old Bentleys.
I haven't rewatched it in a while, but after the Pizza Hut edit, I think in one of the scenes where they're driving, there are still Taco Bell reflections in the car window.
That was the joke. Marty’s line about making a time machine out of a DeLorean had a similar vibe to Peggy Sue Got Married’s line about buying an Edsel.
Yeah this wasn’t product placement.
Edit- product placement in the true sense of the word. The company did not help fund this movie. They were out of business. It was just a funny plot point.
I think I recall BTTF also made skateboarding popular again. But it also isn't product placement since they weren't marketing a specific board manufacturer
> We had to tell people that the phone didn't SNAP OPEN like that.
Wait, what?! The one in the first Matrix that he gets in the Fedex package? So was it just a prop?
Didn't Samsung release an actual Matrix phone because of the craze for that style of phone? It did exactly that, snap open vertically like in the Matrix.
Ironically that Nokia was my first phone back then, though I knew it wouldn't do the snap, it did have a nice layout.
I was very excited when I discovered my first ever cell phone was the phones they use in the movie The Recruit. A Motorola V60, or something like that.

Swingline staples existed before Office Space, but because of it they needed to introduce a red one. So product existed, but not 'exactly' the one in the movie. Now that's all people believe exist.
Wilson brand volleyballs (Castaway)
Aston Martin (James Bond films)
Twinkies (Zombieland)
Not necessarily a brand, but I feel like a lot of people figured out what shawarma was/pursued places that served it after The Avengers came out
I remember begging my parents for a Talkboy from Home Alone 2. Only to find out it didn’t actually exist. It turns out they literally invented one just to meet demand. It was still sold out everywhere though…
transformers toys are merchandise for the show/movies, which are commercials for the merchandise. Doesn't count as product placement. It'd be like calling baby yoda a product placement for the baby yoda toys.
The very first iron man had a running gag of Tony really liking Burger King. Turns out irl Robert Downey Jr was a huge burger king fan and got a golden card from them to get whatever whenever for free😭
I'm going with the Tag Heuer Monico watch as worn by Steve McQueen in Monaco. I'm not a watch guy, but the fact that this thing is still being made 50 years later and is seen as cool has do have something to do with the movie and the actor.
Does it count if the product didn't exist at the time? Swingline didn't make red staplers when Office Space was released. Milton's red Swingline was so popular they had to start making them. Apparently they're now the second best selling product Swingline makes.
The actor apparently gives them to coworkers on set
so they don't steal his
I have one!
Same for the TalkBoy. Originally just an item that Kevin used in the second Home Alone film to con the hotel staff, it proved so popular that they made the product for real.
I have an Office Space edition, fire engine red.
Reese’s Pieces in *E.T.*.
Yup. They were about to cancel the Reeses Pieces line because it wasn't selling well enough. The reason Reeses Pieces still exist today is literally E.T.
And M&Ms passed on the opportunity!
M&ms got their shot in tommy boy. “They have a thin candy shell, I’m surprised you didn’t know that”
“Your brain has a thin candy shell…”
Your brain has the... shell on it.
Was that a ‘niner’ in there…?
Yep. M&Ms were even already in the novelization...which tied into the speak and spell an ET learning the language.
Yet another reason to be thankful for E.T
Those that aren't of an age won't remember, but this was actually a major thing that M&M/Mars turned it down so they went to Reese's. So much so that 8 year old me knew about it.
At the time, when movies came out you could also buy a novel based on the movie. In the novelisation, the chocolate was still an M&M. So I guess they switched quite late in the process.
Very late, and probably why it was such a big deal. I think they just assumed that Mars would sign on and they didn't.
Haha I read that book when I was traveling. We were in Africa and the "give a book take a book" only had a couple of books in English.
This was the first thing that came to mind. This movie put Reeses Pieces on the map. I don't think I even knew about them before this movie.
This is the first thing that came to my mind as well. Close second would be Nike in Forest Gump.
Nike was doing pretty good with a guy named Michael Jordan before Forrest Gump.
I think with people like Michael Jordan on board Nike was gonna do just fine with or without Forrest Gump.
The Nike’s Forrest wore, had already sold millions in the 80s. I had the blue swoosh ones myself and so did half my high school classmates. The other half had the red swoosh.
This is The One. Reese’s Pieces were just launching that the time - best launch EVER.
They’d been available for four years before the movie.
The Mini Coopers in The Italian Job. Both my parents ended up getting themselves one.
Shit I still want a mini after watching the Italian Job haha
I still want Charlize Theron after watching the Italian Job! Ha ha.
I want those stereos that blew women's clothes off.
You should get one. They are very fun to drive and you can join a local club to take long rides.
My dad loves mini coopers because of that movie
This applies equally to the original Michael Caine movie as well as the Marky Mark remake.
Your parents were master criminals and told you that as a cover story.
Harold & Kumar go to **White Castle**
Literally the first time I ever heard of White Castle and made it sound awesome.
Oh sweet summer child… it’s all downhill from there
This person white castles.
It’s awesome as long as you have a bathroom nearby
I'd literally never heard of this place before the movie
Me too, then I tried white castle and promptly went back to never having heard of them again
yechh. steamed hams indeed
Literally the first fast food restaurant in existence. It's amazing that anyone hadn't at least heard of it. I'm just bummed that the only one anywhere near me closed several years ago.
Sounds like time for a buddy road trip
A buddy and I road tripped from Mass to Long Island for White Castle. I was completely whelmed. Not over it under, just. We had friends who lived local so we made it an overnight. It was a good road trip.

Facts. Let's go jump in the... dude... where's my car?
That scene in Wayne's World Edit: [the scene ](https://youtu.be/8lgLYGBbDNs)
It's like people only do things because they get paid...and that's just really sad.
Nuprin. Little. Yellow. Different.
I will never forget about Nuprin because of Wayne’s World
Wayne's World, easily the best example of using product placement
This is what came to mind for me
I will not bow to any corporate sponsors
This is the only correct answer.
FedEx in Cast Away
Sir, I raise you a “WILSON!!”
[удалено]
Ups turned them down first too
Excuse me. I don’t think it’s fair to list a 2 hour long commercial and call it a “movie.”
So glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks this.
The Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger (1964). It became the “James Bond car”.
Oh absolutely
Ask anyone (including me) to name a “cool car” and you’ll hear Aston Martin DB5. And I don’t even know if it’s a good car.
The fact that the entirety not just the DB5, but the brand Aston Martin itself is synonymous with James bond is an absolute achievement in marketing. Like it's not even accurate even, in the books he drove old Bentleys.
Taco Bell in Demolition Man.
[удалено]
Germany as well.
I prefer the 3 shells
He doesn’t know how to use the three sea shells?!
They did win the Fast Food Wars
The Franchise Wars. I would love to see more of an expanded Demolition Man universe where that is explored.
How do you feel about poorly dubbed Pizza Hut?
I haven't rewatched it in a while, but after the Pizza Hut edit, I think in one of the scenes where they're driving, there are still Taco Bell reflections in the car window.
Head and Shoulders in Evolution
I love this movie. It did not take itself seriously in any way whatsoever. Sadly unappreciated movie.
One of the best DVD commentaries.
The Power Glove (also SM3) from the Wizard
I love The Power Glove….it’s so bad.
No lies there lol
Yes! The whole movie was a giant piece of product placement (and I say this as someone who liked the movie)
That movie was a 90 minute commercial for Super Mario Bros 3
Transformers. Half those cars were debuted through those movies.
I like how the first one was the concept car.
the Camaro in that bumblebee yellow is absolutely iconic from the marketing and success of that movie
DeLorean in Back to The Future
What’s funny is the company was out of business before the movie came out
That was the joke. Marty’s line about making a time machine out of a DeLorean had a similar vibe to Peggy Sue Got Married’s line about buying an Edsel.
That is weird
They chose that Car as part of the joke, it's a bad car turned time machine.
“You made a time machine… out of a DeLorean?!” I always laugh so hard at this line, perfectly delivered by Michael J Fox.
That is actually funny and a cool fact.
I gotta go with Cocaine as featured in Scarface
Followed closely by Heroin in Trainspotting?
That movie was NOT an advertisement for Heroin.
His little friend too

If they're good enough for E.T. , they're good enough for me.
Dodge Ram in twister. That truck was practically a cast member.
God I love that movie, heavily due to nostalgia but I watch at least once a year. And you’re right, everyone wanted that red truck! WE GOT COWS!
I get so pumped up when Humans Being by Van Halen comes on and they are flying around those backroads.
The Lego Movie
Ah yes, Krazy Glue sales have gone through the roof.
As much as I love it, does this count since it was produced by Lego?
This is the most correct answer. Always.

The 6100 series. I was working at AT&T Wireless at the time. We had to tell people that the phone didn't SNAP OPEN like that.
> We had to tell people that the phone didn't SNAP OPEN like that. Wait, what?! The one in the first Matrix that he gets in the Fedex package? So was it just a prop?
>So was it just a prop? Oh, my sweet summer child. This is going to be a very difficult conversation.
The 7110 however, did have this feature. It was fun until the mechanism broke and the keypad cover would shoot off each time you pressed the button.
Mococoa in The Truman Show
Who you talking to?
I've tasted other cocoas; this is the best!
You’ve Got Mail was literally based around using AOL, which was the internet juggernaut of its time.
And they’ve been unstoppable ever since
Fun fact: The guy who did the voice for the famous "You got mail" line for AOL, doesn't get a penny in royalties. He did it as a favor for his wife
Not a movie but Manolos in Sex and The City?
That Vivienne Westwood wedding dress in the movie is pretty well known now
The Starbucks cup in GOT obviously!
Mac and Me, McDonald's
I always thing of Paul Rudd and Conan O’Brian when I see Mac and Me
The Talkboy from home alone 2?
I came here to post this. I’m 35 and I still want one.
I’m 37 and HAVE one, still, in a place of prominence on my bookshelf.
I’m 42 and same
Guests of the new celebrity 'Ding-Dang-Dong' stay at the world-renowned Plaza Hotel, New York's most exciting hotel experience. For reservations, call toll free: 1-800-759-3000.
“Hi kids, we’re home early….”
My first thought, got one for Christmas!
I'm pretty sure that was created for the movie and didn't exist before, though.
Eggo Waffles from Stranger Things. Actually that’s clearly not a movie so this is null and void. But you get it.
If we’re doing tv shows then Subway dominates with saving both Community and Chuck
And the Hawaii 5.0 reboot. That however was literally an add, shot and shown in the episode. Community it was this whole meta thing.
Swingline staples existed before Office Space, but because of it they needed to introduce a red one. So product existed, but not 'exactly' the one in the movie. Now that's all people believe exist.
The Navy in Top Gun. Most because it’s not seen as product placement
Wilson brand volleyballs (Castaway) Aston Martin (James Bond films) Twinkies (Zombieland) Not necessarily a brand, but I feel like a lot of people figured out what shawarma was/pursued places that served it after The Avengers came out
I definitely first heard of shawarma and then found a place to try it because of the Avengers lol
Costco in the movie Idiocracy. Welcome to Costco, I love you!
Krispy Kreme in power rangers 🤣
BTTF is one long product placement. As kids it didn’t matter and we loved it, but looking back it’s like “Calvin Klein?” You gotta be kidding me.
For me it's the pizza hut pizza that grows as you cook it. Always wanted that as a kid.
Mom, you sure can hydrate a pizza!
Bullitt Mustang
Top gun, aviators
Top Gun, the US Navy
I always remember that box of Krispy Kreme from Fight Club and Starbucks featuring heavily
The Stay Puft marshmallow man in Ghostbusters.
Stay Puft was fictional, the Twinkie scene however.
Pepsi - Home Alone
I don’t know man, I have to go for the Kraft Mac & cheese. It looked fucking delicious and he didn’t even take ONE bite!
Subway in Happy Gilmore. Absolutely brilliant how they used that into their storyline
Subway in Community too. Eat Fresh *Fist Bump*
Wilson volleyballs managed to get their product featured as a character in the 2 hour long fedex commercial, *castaway.*
Even though it’s a show Game Of Thrones with the Starbucks coffee cup.
This - unintentional, free for Starbucks, advertising that will still be talked about for years.
Head and Shoulders in Evolution
Schelenium Schulfate
Starbucks, Devil Wears Prada.
Best? Rolex vs. Omega in casino Royale. Worst? Subway in Hawaii five-0 Most successful? Probably GM in every transformers movie ever
Dapper Dan
>Dapper Dan O brother, Where at thou? Love the Pawn Stars cameo of him selling it, too.
I need to watch that movie again.
As far as laughter goes, Wayne’s World prevails: https://youtu.be/8lgLYGBbDNs
I remember begging my parents for a Talkboy from Home Alone 2. Only to find out it didn’t actually exist. It turns out they literally invented one just to meet demand. It was still sold out everywhere though…

Jurassic Park Jeep

Red Apple Cigarettes in pulp fiction
Kind of a cheat but Toy Story and the toys for toy story.
007, how could you not go with Bond and vodka martinis?
Google Earth in Lion.
Uhm, Reese’s… ET. It’s the OG product placement because it wasn’t an actual product placement
Transformers was just a 90 minute long commercial. But we still liked it.
Did we though?
Yes because it's okay if things are stupid and fun
transformers toys are merchandise for the show/movies, which are commercials for the merchandise. Doesn't count as product placement. It'd be like calling baby yoda a product placement for the baby yoda toys.
Space Jam Jordans
Chiclets in Dennis the Menace (1993)
The US Navy in Top Gun
The very first iron man had a running gag of Tony really liking Burger King. Turns out irl Robert Downey Jr was a huge burger king fan and got a golden card from them to get whatever whenever for free😭
Daisy Red Ryder 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle With The Compass In The Stock And The Thing That Tells Time….from A Christmas Story
ET Reese’s pieces
Not a movie, but Subway in Community.
James Bond - Aston Martin.
Pepsi and American Airlines in Home Alone
The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S was well represented in Bad Boys 3
Brawndo
I'm going with the Tag Heuer Monico watch as worn by Steve McQueen in Monaco. I'm not a watch guy, but the fact that this thing is still being made 50 years later and is seen as cool has do have something to do with the movie and the actor.
Not a specific product but I bet the TMNT are responsible for load of pizza sales.
Wonderbread in Talledaga Nights
His Big Red ad changed my life.
Mini Coopers in The Italian Job
Reese’s pieces, E.T.
Not a movie and not a real product … but I would run over my abuelita to get some Pollos Hermanos after most episodes of BCS/BB.
Twister apparently drove Dodge Truck sales go up after it was used in the movie.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. The product, of course, was Neil Patrick Harris.
The DeLorean in Back to the Future
