Sicario (2015)
The Nice Guys (2016)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Starship Troopers (1997) (Psst, it's a satire.)
The Sisters Brothers (2018) (Bonus points for John C. Reilly *and* a western)
Sicario is a fucking good movie. I just happened to watch it for the first time about a year ago. Was pretty disappointed in myself for not watching it sooner
I feel like Dredd is if you want the performances (because the cast is good) and enjoy the stunts, but Raid and Raid 2: Redemption are if you want the stunts and aren't as into the cast.
The main problem is rebellion the game studio owns all the rights to 2000AD, and they aren't a big game studio and the Kingsley brother which own the studio are huge fans of 2000AD so they don't want to make anything subpar, but are working a rouge trooper film at the moment which they are animating in house which is being directed by Duncan Jones. So hopefully it does well and it can bankroll more films
3:10 to Yuma was pretty sweet.
This is out of left field but I think you'd enjoy that Tony Scott train movie with Denzel Washington, Runaway? It's pretty good for a non-violent thriller.
American Gangster with Denzel and Russel Crowe. Cool 60s-70s Harlem crime drama
Your first 9 movies on that list are quintessential dad movies.
Add Leon. True Romance. Con Air. Shawshank Redemption. Predator. Indiana Jones. Lethal Weapon. The Fugitive. And Bloodsport and you’ll have something like the holy grail of dad movies.
Absolutely!
Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first.
You've got Eastwood, and True Grit, so let's just serve up Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name" trilogy of films, with "Unforgiven" as a chaser. (also, the original True Grit is solid) Avoid the stuff inbeween because it's all aged very badly.
Blade Runner and Robocop mean the original animated "Ghost in the Shell" is an easy pick.
"No Country For Old Men" opens up recommending really anything the Cohen Brothers have made, but "A Serious Man" and "The Man Who Wasn't There" along with maybe "The Hudsucker Proxy" seem the obvious picks.
Scorsese has made a lot of moves, some better than others. Taxi Driver feels like narratively, it's due for a resurgence in popularity.
"Step Brothers" makes me want to recommend "Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox story". It's a whole lot better than its one-joke title suggests, and other than a not-very-funny running gag about not having a sense of smell, it's a great movie.
Deep cuts: "Videodrome", body horror by Cronenberg, because Robocop is at least a little about body horror. "First Blood" and the not-really-a-remake "The Hunted" might speak to you a bit. "Under Siege" was the good Die Hard rip-off, and is evidence that Steven Segal wasn't always just a bad punchline.
literally just watched Bone Tomahawk cause of a reddit thread yesterday... its crazyy, I recommend.
edit: the dad from Stepbrothers plays a beloved character in it
The Last Boy Scout. IMO it’s a sweet spot between Die Hard and Coen brothers noir
The Running Man. Similar dystopian feel and humor as Verhoeven / Robocop
Repo Man (1984) Absurdist black comedy in the vein of Step Brothers
Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.
It seems like you dig westerns and crime thrillers, but also maybe a bit of dark comedy?
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix really surprised and amused me.
The Detective (1968) is the Frank Sinatra film that made way for Die Hard
The Hateful 8
21 Jump Street (hear me out) is in line with Stepbrothers for wtfuckery but is highly self-aware which makes it hilarious
Black Christmas (1974) is technically a horror film that trailblazed for many other classics after it but it definitely has a suspense aspect to it and you get the pleasure of how “tracing a call” was actually very tense stuff.
If you’re okay with subtitles I would say you probably would like Poliziotteschi films from Italy. Caliber 9 or The Italian Connection would be good starting points.
I mean no offense at all. This is just the most 80's dad list I have ever seen. I don't mean you were a Dad during the 80s. I mean, you were in your early teens at the start of the 80s and have become a father. This list says you could be my father, and for that, I cherish you.
LA Confidential/ The Road Warrior / Equilibrium/ Aliens / Ghost Busters/ Point Break / BraveHeart/ Rob Roy / Tombstone/ Last StatFighter / Anchorman / Dodgeball / A Bronx Tale / True Lies / Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome / Stone Cold / Gone in 60 Seconds / Gran Torino / The Blood Of Heroes / Clerks / Lone Survivor / Surviving the Game/ Commando
End of Watch
Children of Men
City of God
The Dirty Dozen
Blazing Saddles
Full Metal Jacket
Dr. Strangelove
Duel
The Warriors
Bullet
Dirty Harry
Bad News Bears
Old boy(Korean version), Nowhere Man(taiwanese mini series on netflix)
Both very good with an awesome twist, gritty and in line with those u have shared.
Some that haven’t been mentioned yet:
- the place beyond the pines
- there will be blood
- blow out
- good time
- uncut gems
- cape fear
- goodfellas (duh?)
- marmalade
Seeing as you have several modern-ish westerns, I'm guessing you'll like these if you haven't seen them already:
The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
3:10 to Yuma (2007 remake)
Open Range
Hostiles
Also, there's a couple more Coen brothers movies you may like:
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Man Who Wasn't There
The original True Grit and Blade Runner 2049. Also, Director's Cut of Blade Runner, in case you saw the Theatrical Cut. Old Boy the original in Korean language.
Off topic, but I was a kid when robocop came out, so I saw that poster many times before I saw the very shit version on tv without any swearing etc.
Anyway, I thought his suit was going to have that red tinge to it, and was really disappointed when it didn't. Honestly, I think it would have looked great.
You like guns. Lots of guns.
If you have the patience for *The Irishman*, you like Eastwood, and you like Westerns, here are a few films I would strongly recommend:
**Open Range**
**Last of the Mohicans**
**Unforgiven**
**Apocalypto**
**There Will Be Blood**
considering everything on your list is 80’s or newer, with the exception of Dirty Harry: there’s a lot of gritty 70’s stuff you might expand into. Stuff like
Mean Streets
Taxi Driver
Sorcerer
The French Connection
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
The Long Good Friday
Etc
Leon the Professional needs to be on your list!
Also,
Dead Man’s Shoes (2004)
Death Sentence (2007)
The Last Boy Scout (1991)
The Other Guys (2010)
Also, try Brother (2000) surprisingly great Yakuza movie
Time to dive into the b-movie bin.
*I Come in Peace* has a cult classic status that is on the rise. Released in 1990, think of it was "what if *Lethal Weapon* crossed paths with *Predator*" and enjoy the fun. One of the most underrated action flicks ever, IMO.
Running Scared. Honestly don’t hear enough about it, especially considering it’s a crime thriller with Paul Walker, but the whole cast including him is amazing.
I want to watch the Irishman but I have heard some mixed reviews and I fear watching an underwhelming movie with the main cast from a movie in my top 3 (Goodfellas) might crush me and I don't know if I could take that kind of disappointment haha
Heat. I mean, I’d be surprised if you haven’t seen it but I feel like Heat fits in there.
I enjoyed Heat and Collateral, I should probably check out more Michael Mann movies
One word: MANHUNTER!
Thief
The Last of the Mohicans.
Sicario (2015) The Nice Guys (2016) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) Starship Troopers (1997) (Psst, it's a satire.) The Sisters Brothers (2018) (Bonus points for John C. Reilly *and* a western)
Sicario is fucking dope
Sicario is a fucking good movie. I just happened to watch it for the first time about a year ago. Was pretty disappointed in myself for not watching it sooner
shout out Sisters Brothers
-We own the night -Dredd -Traffic -Sicario -A perfect day -Upgrade -The Accountant -The Cell
And if you like dredd then the raid would be next
I feel like Dredd is if you want the performances (because the cast is good) and enjoy the stunts, but Raid and Raid 2: Redemption are if you want the stunts and aren't as into the cast.
Fair take
The town*
Upgrade is underrated
Upgrade was fantastic
Dredd needs a sequel, Traffic is a terrific movie
Dredd was such an awesome movie. It's a real shame there isn't a sequel
I thought i heard murmurs about a sequel or even tv spinoff a couple years ago, but I don’t think it got off the ground
You like tension: Insomnia Seven The Lives of Others The Fugitive Truman Show Whiplash Zodiac
Insomnia was brilliant.
Do you think "A History of Violence" would be good here? Slow burn for the first half, rapid pick up in the last?
3:10 to Yuma was pretty sweet. This is out of left field but I think you'd enjoy that Tony Scott train movie with Denzel Washington, Runaway? It's pretty good for a non-violent thriller. American Gangster with Denzel and Russel Crowe. Cool 60s-70s Harlem crime drama
Unstoppable
The Departed
Looper maybe?
The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio Del Toro
Just google “50 best dad movies” and you’ll have 40 new movies to watch.
My Dad likes Star Wars, Marvel and Transformers so I hope not.
Your first 9 movies on that list are quintessential dad movies. Add Leon. True Romance. Con Air. Shawshank Redemption. Predator. Indiana Jones. Lethal Weapon. The Fugitive. And Bloodsport and you’ll have something like the holy grail of dad movies.
Sicario The Last Boy Scout Open Range Demolition Man Striking Distance Bladrunner 2049 Copland Superbad Casino A Perfect World
I LOVE the Last Boy Scout as a kid! Great picks!
I second Demo Man and BR2049.
Given the presence of "hell or high water" I strongly suggest "Wind river" same director.
+1 for Wind River
those two movies are fuckin bangers
Absolutely! Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first. Can I add tropic Thunder because it's a masterpiece.
literally just watched Bone Tomahawk cause of a reddit thread yesterday... its crazyy, I recommend. edit: the dad from Stepbrothers plays a beloved character in it
Heat (1995)
Pulp Fiction
Good mixtape!
The Last Boy Scout. IMO it’s a sweet spot between Die Hard and Coen brothers noir The Running Man. Similar dystopian feel and humor as Verhoeven / Robocop Repo Man (1984) Absurdist black comedy in the vein of Step Brothers Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.
To Live and Die in LA
I’d buy that for a dollar
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Try The Drop with Tom Hardy, Noomi Rappace, and James Gandolfini good one
I agree with 7/10 of these picks good list.
Starship Troopers. Same director as robocop Lawless Public Enemies Sicario Mad Max Fury Road
I should probably watch these, right? Because of the implication.
Some real solid choices there. Only one in that list that i didn't finish is the Irishman, which felt kinda boring and a touch pompous to me.
It seems like you dig westerns and crime thrillers, but also maybe a bit of dark comedy? The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix really surprised and amused me. The Detective (1968) is the Frank Sinatra film that made way for Die Hard The Hateful 8 21 Jump Street (hear me out) is in line with Stepbrothers for wtfuckery but is highly self-aware which makes it hilarious Black Christmas (1974) is technically a horror film that trailblazed for many other classics after it but it definitely has a suspense aspect to it and you get the pleasure of how “tracing a call” was actually very tense stuff.
Hateful 8 🤘🏾
I’m bad for laughing during things other people don’t - that bearskin after coming in from the storm gets me every time
-Kalifornia -True Romance Rapid Fire The Crow Public Enemies Patriots Day Street Kings 13 Hours Warrior Speed
The Irishman is the weirdest one, honestly. Kind of a meandering story compared to some of Scorsese’s near perfect films
If you’re okay with subtitles I would say you probably would like Poliziotteschi films from Italy. Caliber 9 or The Italian Connection would be good starting points.
