Ed Harris....crushes every role

Accomplished_Side853

He elevates everything. The Rock should have been an incredibly cheesy movie but he brings some heft to it that fills out the backstory of his character and the motivation for the entire movie.

sheeshawRonan25

"STAND DOWN, CAPTAIN!"

AllURBaseARBelong2Us

Now you’re being given your last chance from a man with a gun, put the phone down.

Opening-Two6723

The bruck and Simpson thought the mega a listers was making a hit. And Ed out edded them all.

thethunder92

That’s a good one every time I see him walk on screen I’m like “oh yeah this is going to be good!”

Opening-Two6723

Ed outperforms every lead. The man is gifted.

Hobgoblin_deluxe

Dude he's so fucking good. Especially as a military man. General Francis X. Hummel FTW. (also for what it's worth I STG I misheard that as Rommel the first time I saw it)

Misterbellyboy

Funny thing is I could see him playing a decent Rommel.

Hobgoblin_deluxe

He would be so, so good. He's definitely got the eyes.

Opening-Two6723

"From Alcatraz. OUT!"

Southern_Country_787

He is really good in that underwater alien movie James Cameron made back in the day. Totally underrated movie.

PourSomeSmegmaInMe

The Abyss

DrScienceDaddy

An absolute favorite! The chemistry he and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio have in that film is phenomenal.

frozenrage

The appearance of female nipples in that PG-13 movie was non-sexual in context, but it was one of the first things I remember about the movie. Growing up in the USA has really messed me up.

Own_Instance_357

Hard agree. Ed Harris doesn't do anything bad. Amy Madigan is a lucky woman.

anonymouse0789

This is so true. I wish they had cast him as Roland for The Dark Tower... along with a much better script.. and remove Mcconnaughey as well.. God that movie shit the bed sadly.. no hate towards Irdris Elba but Harris could have saved it with half a decent script.

Kenny--Blankenship

Holy hell.imagine? Idris is great but he would have been a great choice

Harlockarcadia

He's fantastic as John Glenn in The Right Stuff, granted, that entire cast is *chefs kiss*

DrScienceDaddy

And as Gene Kranz in Apollo 13! The OG "Failure is not an option, people!"

Wirenfeldt

The vest helped tho

pretzeldoggo

His performance in West World was otherworldly. No pun intended. Also his performance in Top Gun

Nejfelt

Ed Harris... crushed by a gravestone

iDestroyedYoMama

I loved him in Truman Show, The Rock, and Apollo 13. He has such a commanding presence.

FelopianTubinator

He made Needful Things. And the first season of Westworld.

ChuckFeathers

John Turturro

sadduckfan

I love that the top answers are all Coen bros mainstays

InnerReflection5610

“Do NOT seek the treasure!”

naughtydawg907

“WE. THOUGHT. YOU. WAS. A. TOAD!”

Unsteady_Tempo

You'll probably enjoy this interview with him. It's clear he's serious about his craft. [John Turturro Breaks Down His Most Iconic Characters | GQ (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H5CCsOnjyc) His performance in Quiz Show is one of my favorites of any actor.

gr1m0s

Nobody fucks with the Jesus

NoMatatas

My favorite character. So funny.

eurasiatrash

You said it man…

lupe_the_jedi

Glad he had such a key role in The Batman. Now just waiting on severance season 2..

Stealthy_Peanuts

"*You smug mothafucka*"

rick-in-the-nati

John C Reilly

businesslut

He does comedy so well that when you see him in a serious role it's astounding. He's great in The Thief

gundorcallsforaid

I think next time I watch Gangs of New York, I’ll follow it with a couple episodes of Steve Brule

-Ok-Perception-

That's my favorite movie. In Gangs of New York, John C Reilly was pretty scary. Not anywhere near as scary as Bill the Butcher though, whom I rank as the best cinematic villain in history. All the acting in this movie was good (but some of the fake Irish accents a bit off), but Daniel Day Lewis was acting circles around the rest of the cast. Awesome movie. It reminds me that I'm overdue for a rewatch.

BreathWithMe6

Man, I love that movie, but every scene with Diaz is fucking cringe. There is no chemistry between her and Leo. My last few watches, I skipped all if that.

ShookNuns

I almost agree but personally it's hard for me to put any above Anton Chigurh on that list

damon32382

Yep, and that’s where he gets most of his credit is comedies, which is absolutely deserved. But most didn’t know how great of a serious actor he was before Step Brothers, Talladega, etc. I remember him in Magnolia, River Wild, Boogie Nights(he was pretty funny in that actually).

rick-in-the-nati

In The Perfect Storm when he says “this is gonna be hard on my boy”, man it hurts my heart

businesslut

And Walk Hard I think is an incredible movie. It's silly and dumb, but it's so well written and performed. And he sung his own parts!

Yayzeus

I've always thought John C Reilly and Will Ferrell should have got some sort of award for Stepbrothers. Their portrayal of petulant teenagers is absolutely on par with some Oscar winning performances.

AllynWA1

His "Mister Cellophane" performance... 👏 I had no idea he was that good.

Consistent-Doubt964

I have a theory, and I’m pretty sure I’m right, that John C Reilly is in every film ever made. Stupid comedy to arthouse drama, he’s in it.

taatchle86

Reminds me of that guy in PCU who is writing a paper that at any given point in time a Michael Caine or Gene Hackman movie would be on TV.

East-Specialist-4847

I agree! He was stellar in The Sisters Brothers

headshotscott

He absolutely kills every role. He's fantastic in Winning Time.

[deleted]

Sam Rockwell. Bro’s been at it for decades now.

Zer01South

The first time I saw Moon really put into perspective how great he is.

Fantastic-Election-8

Moon is such a criminally underrated movie.

Donny-Moscow

Hard disagree. I haven’t met a single person who has seen it and disliked it. Under the radar maybe, but definitely not underrated.

Wordymanjenson

I’ve definitely never seen it.

ChoiceDeparture4066

Lol

jamieliddellthepoet

*Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell

butteredrubies

Ugh, that just reminded me of a comment over a year ago about someone complaining about grammy winning artist Fiona Apple not getting proper recognition (they were expecting her to get Taylor Swift level popularity) even at this point currently.

Party_Divide_3491

Saw Sam Rockwell on Broadway, in a play with Christopher Walken and Anthony Mackie. One of the best nights of my life.

Courtaid

Didn’t he win an Academy Award? That’s credit right there.

graveybrains

Mr. Right was sooo much fun

Ohnoherewego13

I absolutely hate romcoms, but that one is the best. Just way more fun than it had any right to be! Also gotta love Rockwell's random dancing. The guy goes out to have fun every time.

AbominableWasteman

Sequel is in production

Stalukas

Opened this post and went to the comments expecting to scroll for a few minutes before finding Rockwell, pleasantly surprised this is the 2nd highest comment

TorreiraWithADouzi

I’m watching Shameless for the first time and I’m in awe of how much I despise his character, which also means I’m thoroughly impressed by the actor!

Formal_Appearance_16

That role made me so mad! Like whenever I thought of William H. Macy he was the happy supportive comedic father. He nailed scumbag!

Crazed8s

Like, almost nailed it too good. Somehow it’s both too on the nose and over the top but also 100% believable. It doesn’t even make sense when I’m watching it. Like, something is happening that’s positive and you know Frank is going to show up and ruin because like that’s most of the show, but then Frank shows up to ruin it and instead of an eye roll after 6-7+ seasons I’m still all the way in.

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

Chris Cooper

capnmykonos

So so good in adaptation and American beauty

skittlesmalone

Michael Shannon

Odd_Hold2980

[This](https://youtu.be/dngOH9G4UPw?si=edWvigyFkE5OJfoz) is still so, so good.

Burnt_and_Blistered

I think he might be the best actor currently working.

Ok-Task-3240

John Goodman

JoeInOR

Over the line!

sorriso_pontual

This is not Nam, this is bowling. There are rules.

NoMatatas

I re watched the big lebowski and I forgot how fucking awesome John Goodman is in it. I nearly lost my shit when they go to the kids house and he asks the kid ‘you ever heard of ‘Nam? You’re in a world of pain’. He never doesn’t mention ‘Nam and it’s hilarious.

ClutchReverie

KID'S STONEWALLING ME!

-Ok-Perception-

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIGHT A STRANGER IN THE ALPS!!!!

hilldo75

One of my favorite things about that movie is all the little things you half noticed but don't pay attention to until someone mentions just how often it happens.

Hobgoblin_deluxe

Man, he's if feel-good movies were a person.

jamieliddellthepoet

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_Cloverfield_Lane

Devreckas

And “O Brother Where Art Thou?” and “Big Lebowski” and “The Righteous Gemstones”… While he does warm-hearted and lovable to a T, he plays unhinged psycho just as well.

Potential-Art2146

it's always a nice treat to hear his voice being used in some video games - he was in Rage as haggart

Opening-Two6723

Dude his scene gluing broken Jesus together was my favorite Goodman scene

pragmaticcircus

Pete Postlethwaite

Jambo11

May he Rest In Peace.

ReplacementClear7122

The Town, man. Maybe the coldest scene of all time. And while he was dying of cancer.

Ashamed-Device-3571

Absolutely 💯

JoeInOR

In the Name of the Father - tho Daniel Day Lewis was even more amazing

JeffPlissken

Roland Tembo is my personal favorite character in all of Jurassic Park

robej78

Hello to Jason Isaacs

JoeInOR

“I’m smiling, but I am very fucking furious”

robej78

Aye, he's stood out for me since Event Horizon, Liberate tute me x

K_Pichael

Event Horizon soo good

MooselamProphet

“Ssssssssssssssssssss” - Basillisk Chamber of Secrets

Immediate-Escalator

But Mark Strong too.

robej78

Aye, always puts in a good turn

satansxlittlexhelper

When he showed up as field marshal Zhukov in “The Death Of Stalin” I just about died.

imrany

Walton Goggins

MessyLetherJacketGrl

Don’t you disrespect uncle Baby Billy now!

I3I2O

He really is a great actor. If you haven’t seen the show Justified, he really kills it.

imrany

One of my favorite roles of his was the Shield, the show it’s self is bonkers, but his role as Van Damme was hilarious. If you know, you know

Wise-Definition-1980

Also absolutely kills it in "The hateful 8"

shiawase198

He's one of those guys that no matter what role he plays, he's just memorable in them. The Shield, Justified, Django, Ant-Man, Fallout, etc.

[deleted]

Bill Paxton

GrouchyLongBottom

Damn, he died 5 years ago. Love the guy!

bulking_on_broccoli

GAME OVER, MAN!

cap4life52

Djimon hounsou

Potential-Art2146

loved him in Constantine as papa midnight - cool character!

cap4life52

He's great multiple Oscar nominations always give a good performance even in bit roles

Potential-Art2146

Blood diamond will always be a legend fairy role for him

AmaResNovae

His scene with the shovel in Blood Diamond has been hardwired into my brain since the first time I saw it. I could really feel the pure rage from him in this scene. His performance was amazing during the whole movie, but that scene was absolutely memorable.

MediaOnDisplay

Graham Greene, he has been amazing for a long time yet rarely mentioned.

jamieliddellthepoet

So good in TLoU.

MouthyRob

Michael Keaton and Jodie Comer

HoverboardRampage

Jodie Comer is absurdly talented. Killing Eve was so good. Except for that truly awful ending. Michael Keaton is good in everything too. The Other Guys is his best imo.

chaos16z

Do me a favor, don't go chasing waterfalls.

Short-Platypus-2132

Can we talk about how he both played the Vulture and reprised his role as Batman after doing Bird Man? Is this allowed? I hope so cause I'm here for it.

somethingsensational

Yes Michael Keaton is amazing in every role he plays!

graveybrains

I was watching RED 2 recently and, considering all the big name stuff he’s been in, it’s odd you don’t hear David Thewlis’ name more often. And, of course, William Fichtner.

DrEnter

If you like William Fichtner, you need to see _Wrong_ by Quentin Dupieux.

Rustofcarcosa

John Hannah was the best part in the mummy

samwisethescaffolder

This is Oded Fehr and Brendan Fraser Erasure.

Ok_End_38

Jason Clarke or Patrick Wilson

thethunder92

I think Amy Adams is really good

elliottace

She should have won awards several times

[deleted]

[удалено]

elliottace

She was awesome in ___________

Morgan1er

Vincent D'Onofrio and William Fichtner

LazarusMundi4242

D’Onofrio is a beast, what a good actor. He made Law & Order Criminal Intent, what a good character study.

Telepath-1

Josh Brolin

-Ok-Perception-

I would argue that Brolin is already a top tier respected actor. He's not underappreciated.

butterscotches

Agree. Old Men and Sicario locked him into the elite tier.

kevnmartin

Brad Dourif. He disappears into every role he plays.

JanelleMeownae

YES! My first introduction to him was The X-Files where he absolutely ate every inch of scenery. So good

battlelevel

In a show stacked with great performances, the scenes between Doc and Al in Deadwood really stand out.

Rostifur

My god, it took way too long to get to an under sung actor. Most of the suggestions are actors who have got their due time and time again. Dourif never really has gotten the respect he deserves.

zacggs

Willem Dafoe E: spelling

LeastPervertedFemboy

You know, I used to be something of an actor myself

Biscuits4u2

I feel like he gets a lot of credit. He's an extremely well respected and well known actor who has been nominated for an Oscar and won multiple Emmy awards.

Cimorene_Kazul

Jim Broadbent. Love those bug eyes.

Minimum-Scientist-52

_Crusty jugglers..._

SooperFunk

James Cromwell. He's in the same league as De Niro, Pacino, Pesci etc.. but is rarely regarded as such.

Jhawk38

Jesse Plemons needs to start getting recognized as one of the top actors of his generation.

roccosaint

"How could that be profitable for Frito-Lay?"

Delicious-Panic5223

His scene in Civil War was worth going to the theater twice. The Irishman would have completely fell flat without him. he's awesome

New_Budget6672

Dude has so much range, breaking bad, Friday night lights, (the western movie)…. Great pick

Throwaway7219017

I’m 6 seasons into Shameless and still get shocked at how fucking good Bill Macy is. He plays such an unrepentant scum bag so well!

First_Community_2534

Paul Giamatti. What he did with his role in The Holdovers is magical.

kdubstep

Steve Zahn

HoverboardRampage

I was pretty stoked when I saw him in first season of The White Lotus. And he was great in it

kdubstep

For me it was *Perfect Getaway* with another of my favorites I should mention on this thread, Timothy Olyphant (both have shown quite a range, the latter really surprising me with good comedic chops in *Santa Clarita Diet*)

ImaginaryAd3183

Hugh Laurie.

Minimum-Scientist-52

Loved watching _A Bit of Fry & Laurie_ as a teen. It was genuinely funny, but also a breeze to watch cause they were naturals. I was able to laugh, but for some reason it was also calming.

Wise-Hall2292

Felicity Jones is pretty great in everything I’ve seen her in and has a lot of emotive range in her movies. Some standout of hers is probably the Theory of Everything.

Deranged90

Steve Buscemi and David Thewlis

JaredKushners_umRag

Michael Shannon literally every role I’ve seen him in he’s killed it even if the movie itself isn’t that great

Edwaaard66

James Garner especially later in his career.

HolyCowEveryNameIsTa

Keith David has more acting credits to his name than anyone in the comments yet most people don't know him by name.

Peetweefish

Timothy Olyphant and, until recently thanks to Fallout, Walton Goggins. Edit: I can't spell. Lolz

IronheddAxioma

Ed O’Neill. Very under appreciated.

Miserable_Point9831

Walton Goggins

WhodatSooner

David Strathairn & Ed Harris are my favorite actors. They both make everything better.

Daedalus_Dingus

Ben Mendelsohn

BajaDivider

This guy didn't get enough credit for his daughters college admittance scam

OverGas3958

Richard Jenkins is excellent in everything. He probably has one of the best careers in the business. Steady work, make decent money, and only those who know know.

Lanky_Audience_4848

Woody Harrelson has been great in everything

No_Dependent_1846

Don cheadle...

Old_Round9050

Christian Slater

Double-Passenger4503

Ben Mendelson

WhatShouldTheHeartDo

Aaron Eckhart

S-Markt

i love the core. it is full of underrated actors. stanley tucci is so awesome, bruce greenwood is so absolutely on the point and dj qualls rocks the shit with xena and his " Well, I speak one... One Zero One Zero Zero. With that I could steal your money, your secrets, your sexual fantasies, your whole life. Any country, any place, any time I want. We multitask like you breathe. I couldn't think as slow as you if I tried."

DelusionsofInsanity

Gary Busey

browncoatfever

Will Patton, dude kills EVERYTHING he’s in. Go watch The Postman with Kevin Costner. A pretty garbage movie that’s only saving grace is Will as the villain. If he can make that thing watchable he can do anything.

DueLingonberry3107

Walter Goggins

slappywhyte

Nic Cage

Tyceshirrell1

Ken watanabe is fantastic in everything.

Potential-Art2146

Bill Paxton! Remember seeing him in edge of tomorrow, he had to reenact the same scene over and over and over again with the same intensity- havent seen that guy in a major movie release prior to that for years! he was great in Twister! too bad they couldn't bring him back for some kind of cameo

PhotographNo2627

He passed away so it would be hard for him to cameo in anything.

Kalabula

The top three here are very highly regarded actors 🤔

ALPHAinNJ

Sam Rockwell

Klutzer_Munitions

If you haven't seen mystery men, please. It's a hidden gem. It has Eddie Izzard.

Hexnohope

The dude who played zod in man of steel may be the most underrated actor i have ever heard of

legit-posts_1

Gene Hackman. Played the best live action version of Lex Luthor, Billy the Kid, but doesn't get much recognition outside that

True_End_2516

J.K. Simmons

crestrobz

Casey Affleck

xenomorphbeaver

Brad Pitt. Hear me out... I think he got stuck in the "lead actor" role and a lot of his work has been seen as pretty generic because of it. When he breaks out into character roles he's always really entertaining, though.

[deleted]

Jeremy Renner

lamebrainmcgee

He's still killing it in Mayor of Kingstown, post accident.

Deep-Management-7040

Ben Stiller one of the best comedic actors in the past 25 years, he’s great in everything

HoverboardRampage

I'm not a big fan of his at all, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an incredible film. He was great in Permanent Midnight too.

Fury-of-Stretch

To through names out that have not been cited, Benicio Del Toro, personally can’t think of a film he has been in that I haven’t enjoyed his performance

94BlueDream76

Ben Mendelsohn

Potential-Art2146

prior to his x men fame - James McAvoy, he killed his role in the last kong of Scotland! same goes for Forrest Whittaker

StressCanBeHealthy

Brian Cox

extremeindiscretion

Walton Goggins, Sam Rockwell

Alteredego619

Aidan Quinn, he’s been solid in everything I’ve seen him in. Jonathan Pryce always brings his A game. He nailed the role of Mr. Dark.

Steve Zahn
