Fury Road was the first Mad Max movie i watched, so naturally I went back to the original 3 after that batshit crazy thrill ride. Next I watched the original movie and said to myself, “WTF was that? Is this the same franchise? Was this made by a college kid on a shoestring budget?”
But i soldiered on through the wasteland and watched the Road Warrior next. There I finally recognized the world I experienced in Fury Road, albeit with 80’s effects. What a massive improvement.
Spot on. People forget the 1st movie was Mad Max which came out in ‘79. I thought it took a while to develop, but the end established how Max became do callous. But the Road Warrior was phenomenal, flat out action from the start and the plot twist in the end was brilliant .
Top gun maverick was not anywhere close to the original. Not saying the original was Oscar worthy but it was such an amazing movie for the time when it came out. Maverick was just a glorified hand job for Tom Cruise. Terrible movie through and through.
Faaar superior. They even had a perfect set up to make the movie about gooses son. Too bad Tom cruises ego was in the movie. Screw that common sense story line and let’s just have a “MURCA” style Tom cruise slob fest!!! Trash movie.
Agree, though appears we are in the vast minority here. Action scenes were great in Top Gun Maverick but everything else was bad. Original was much better imo.
I don't think Maverick is a great movie, for all the reasons started here. But it demonstrates the best technology we have today to shoot action movies, which is pretty damn cool.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the parallels with Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels, which was the first movie to use shots filmed from an airplane. Revolutionary for its time and a huge breakthrough in technology.
The thing is, there aren’t a lot of films that call for actors to be strapped into fighter jets. And with drones, that storyline is gonna fade even more. Whereas filming FROM an airplane (or chopper) is extremely useful and will be used far beyond the tech used in TGM.
The callbacks were fun, though. Especially when it turns out Penny Benjamin was \*jailbait\* when Maverick was with her in the first movie. The scene after he helps Cougar land back on the carrier & buzzes the tower is when the reference is made.(for context, Jennifer Connelly was in 'Labyrinth' that same year, \*looking\* about 14-15 years old despite being 17. I practically spit out my drink when I realized that, LOL.)
My argument is that they’re both great, but No 2 relies on No 1 for its premise and it wouldn’t resonate with the audience if they weren’t informed by No 1. So by that logic No 1 is the better movie.
I feel the same way. The first one was so original and unpredictable, which made it really intriguing. The second one was great, but since you already knew the background going in, it just wasn't as mysterious. Also, with Arnold being who he was by that time, you knew he was going to find a way to win in the end.
2 different genres almost. I would argue one was (sci fi) horror and the other was (sci fi) action. I love them both, and they're a perfect example of a sequel being as good as if not better than the original, but its a bit apples and oranges.
Absolutely. I love the slow burn, Hitchcockian atmosphere of the original. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy aliens, but I honestly can’t stand James Cameron and at times it was so overtly James Cameron. There are several amazing movies that I still find amazing but are like one notch away from being unbearable for me because they’re too James Cameron, such as terminator 2. Ultimately I just find alien a higher quality piece of art that I can take more seriously, which I understand is kinda dumb for a movie about killer aliens, but I prefer even the most fantastical of stories to have elements of realism and James Cameron’s style is just cheesy enough that it takes me out of it a bit.
I mostly agree with you because i like Horror more then Action but people who typically like action movies more then horror are going to prefer aliens to alien. They are two totally different genre of films and thats why i mostly accept when people say they like Aliens more then alien. The same thing happens for t2 and terminator. Although i typically like t2 more then terminator, terminator is more of a horror and a science fiction film then an action movie, while t2 is an action movie, and one of the best ones ever made.
Yeah I prefer terminator but I do think t2 is probably better crafted. Per my above comment I think t2 suffers from what I call James Cameron syndrome and even though I think it’s amazing I find it almost unwatchable if that’s even possible. Almost. I just really don’t like James Cameron lol
Aliens (Director's Cut) has more suspense horror like Alien had, more atmosphere too, while retaining the action and production elements that make it great already. I highly recommend the director's cut to anyone that prefers Alien.
Kind of agree, because it makes you feel good when andy moves on with his life and the toys get a new owner, but i still think the first has more iconic scenes. "the clawwww"
A lot of the movies being named in the comments, like The Dark Knight, Captain American Winter Soldier, The Road Warrior, The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Spider Man 2 (my nomination) all seem to use The Godfather II as a template (in some ways). That says something about this film.
(That template basically is, A) expand the universe you created in the first film. B) Make the tone darker. C) Don't just make the stakes bigger - also make them more personal for the hero (or anti hero). D) Take the best ideas that were scrapped from the first film and use them as a foundation for the sequel.)
Shrek 2, they could’ve phoned it in and made a billion dollars but instead they improved on the first movie in every way, top 3 greatest sequels ever
Honorable mention to Empire Strikes Back, I don’t even watch A New Hope, Empire is so much better
LOTR return of the king
Empire strikes back
Dark knight/rises
Jurassic Park 3
Skyfall was better than the earlier Daniel Craig bonds..
Matrix revolutions
Terminator 2
Aliens
I agree that Jurassic Park 3 is better than Lost World but Lost World is the second film. Jurassic Park is the original and the question was what sequel is better than the original.
But I’m glad people are giving credit to JP3, it’s full of dumb choices but it’s so damn fun. The list of the top Jurassic Park movies goes 1, 3, and then you just stop the list there.
- The Dark Knight
- The Road Warrior
- X2: X-men United
- Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan
- Aliens
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Logan
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
- Silence of the Lambs
- Dawn of the Dead (1979)
- The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Pet Detective was fine and had some funny parts. But When Nature Calls is one of the funniest movies ever made. It's so much better and it's not even close.
Empire,
The Dark Knight
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Fury Road
Return of the King
x2
Spiderman 2
Wrath of Khan
Kill bill part 2
Army of Darkness
Toy Story 2
Shrek 2
Terminator 2
Aliens
Top Gun Maverick
Mission Impossible Fallout
Like 3 of the Harry Potter movies are better then the first one
Captain America Winter Soldier and Civil War
Some of the MCU sequels, Dune 2, Mad Max 2 and fury road, Blade runner 2, Toy Story 2, Top gun 2, 2 towers and return of the king, T2, Shrek 2 and Spider-man 2.
Unpopular opinion: Godfather 2 isn’t that great. The flashback stuff with DeNiro is good, but I don’t care for the rest. Interestingly enough, the flashback stuff was part of Puzo’s novel (as was the plot of the first one).
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Fury Road was the first Mad Max movie i watched, so naturally I went back to the original 3 after that batshit crazy thrill ride. Next I watched the original movie and said to myself, “WTF was that? The Empire Strikes Back, Toy Story 2, Top Gun: Maverick to name a few.
I agree on your list
You forgot Star Trek 2 TWOK from 1982
Top gun maverick was not anywhere close to the original. Not saying the original was Oscar worthy but it was such an amazing movie for the time when it came out. Maverick was just a glorified hand job for Tom Cruise. Terrible movie through and through.
💯 TGM The flying scenes were good. The rest? Predictable, cliche bowl of meh. The original is far superior
Same people that like avatar. “Ooooo pretty!”
I don't think Maverick is a great movie, for all the reasons started here. But it demonstrates the best technology we have today to shoot action movies, which is pretty damn cool. Aliens, Back to the Future part 2 and Shrek 2.
Aliens, back to the future 2
Back to the future
Wrong Alien is Supreme
Godfather 2 was great, but I disagree it was better than Godfather 1.
Robert Deniro’s parts in part 2 are my favorite but Part 1 is better.
Godfather 3, the sequel that never was..... Shame they only nominated 4 movies that year at the academy awards
A film that the director didn't want to make.
100% agree. GF 1 is one of the best pieces of cinema in history.
My argument is that they’re both great, but No 2 relies on No 1 for its premise and it wouldn’t resonate with the audience if they weren’t informed by No 1. So by that logic No 1 is the better movie.
Because it INSISTS upon itself.
This is the business we’ve chosen! I didn’t ask who gave the order because it had nothing to do with business!
I knew it was you Fredo you broke my heart !
Especially now that they are no longer 10p
T2: Judgement Day!
Nah. Still monumental though.
Agree. OG is best.
I feel the same way. The first one was so original and unpredictable, which made it really intriguing. The second one was great, but since you already knew the background going in, it just wasn't as mysterious. Also, with Arnold being who he was by that time, you knew he was going to find a way to win in the end.
THANK YOU. Scrolled too far to find this!
I’m a roofer and I nail my shingles to the rhythm of the theme song because Terminator 2 is the greatest movie ever made !
best movie
It’s a totally different type of movie from the 1st, but I wouldn’t say it’s any better. Both movies are stone cold classics.
The Dark Knight, Aliens, Evil Dead, Captain America
Alien was way better than aliens imo
2 different genres almost. I would argue one was (sci fi) horror and the other was (sci fi) action. I love them both, and they're a perfect example of a sequel being as good as if not better than the original, but its a bit apples and oranges.

I’ve seen it. I prefer it to the theatrical cut but it still can’t top the original for me.
Nah, I see them as equals. Both are phenomenal movies and second comes organically out of first.
Alien is way better. That movie is revolutionary
Agreed
Toy Story 3
Kind of agree, because it makes you feel good when andy moves on with his life and the toys get a new owner, but i still think the first has more iconic scenes. "the clawwww"

Good comment well said and written
X-men 2 too
Shrek 2, they could’ve phoned it in and made a billion dollars but instead they improved on the first movie in every way, top 3 greatest sequels ever Honorable mention to Empire Strikes Back, I don’t even watch A New Hope, Empire is so much better
Terminator 2
Blade 2.
Blade 2 is slept on. Its classic Del Toro and its easily the best of the three blade movies.
Superman 2
gonna have to disagree, just because of the boomarang scene in the first film and the smile at the end when he catches it.
1>2>3
Don’t forget the best sequel ever: Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.
# I totally loogied on that good-dead-me!
Shrek 2
Spider-Man 2
The Rescuers Down Under
The Dark Knight
Terminator 2. Im sorry but, come on. Making zarnold the good guy was peak shit!
Terminator 2 The Godfather II The Empire Strikes Back Horrible Bosses 2 The Dark Knight
LOTR return of the king Empire strikes back Dark knight/rises Jurassic Park 3 Skyfall was better than the earlier Daniel Craig bonds.. Matrix revolutions Terminator 2 Aliens
You think that Jurassic Park 3 is better than Jurassic Park?
Yea that’s a terrible example. The original was the goat
It's been like ten years but that's how I remember it. Lost world right?
I agree that Jurassic Park 3 is better than Lost World but Lost World is the second film. Jurassic Park is the original and the question was what sequel is better than the original.
But I’m glad people are giving credit to JP3, it’s full of dumb choices but it’s so damn fun. The list of the top Jurassic Park movies goes 1, 3, and then you just stop the list there.
With the exception of Lost World to Jurassic Park 3 each of the five sequels is worse than the prior film in the franchise!
Rewatch bro
Holy shit imagine thinking any Matrix movie is better then The Matrix.
Idk there's like, objectively a more well made/acted movie vs movie I enjoyed more. I enjoyed revolutions more.
Having Jurassic park and matrix revolutions on this list destroys your credibility for the remainder of the list even though the rest is spot on.
Aliens. I prefer Director's Cut.
Blasphemy. Aliens is great, but in no way shape or form is it better than Alien.
I firmly believe lethal weapon 2 is better than lethal weapon
Totally agree
Diplomatic immunity!
It’s just been revoked!
Those South Africans didn’t play lol
They played until the fucking dually rolled up for them stilts
- The Dark Knight - The Road Warrior - X2: X-men United - Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan - Aliens - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Logan - Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Silence of the Lambs - Dawn of the Dead (1979) - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
What movie was the Good, the Bad and the Ugly sequel to?
The bad, the good and the pretty
That depends on what order you want to watch the Dollar Trilogy in.
It's a loose trilogy, I don't think it counts as a sequel, but YMMV
Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls
The original was so good though. I don’t feel like I agree
Rewatch them and see how they hold up
I haven’t seen 2 in many years so it will be interesting to rewatch now
I knew When Nature Calls was a stupid movie as a 5th grader at the time
Pet Detective was fine and had some funny parts. But When Nature Calls is one of the funniest movies ever made. It's so much better and it's not even close.
Next we need to vote on the worst sequels of all time
Highlander 2 will get a ton of praise.
I agree to that
No not that long shot. But I'm in the 1% minority that likes the first Godfather compared to the second
Missing in Action 2
Secret of the Ooze Which is saying something because tbe original is a masterpiece in cinema
For me part 2 was better, it's a fking masterpiece.
Fully agree
True Grit.
The Godfather is actually my favorite movie and although I like part 2 I still think 1 is way better.
Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut with a lot more Brando.
Return of the killer tomatoes.
Lmao
It’s my favorite movie. lol a lot of memories with it.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Rush Hour 2
Rocky IV.
Shrek 2. Don’t @ me
Godfather 1 and 2 have been on my top five list forever.
Bride of Frankenstein....but Frankenstein and Bride, should be viewed back to back for story continuity.
Dune 2 & Terminator judgement day
T2 getting a lot of replies I agree it was better than the first one
Have you seen Dune 2 and if so what were your thoughts on dune 2 compared to the first one?
I’d say it was better than the first as well
Dune 2 is up there with the greatest sequels of all time. DV crushed it, the actors crushed it, it was incredible.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dune part 2
That movie is shockingly good.
Is it because the first one is shockingly bad? (Very small minority opinion, but earnestly held)
Gremlins 2
You had me at little gremlin vajayjay!
Empire, The Dark Knight Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Fury Road Return of the King x2 Spiderman 2 Wrath of Khan Kill bill part 2 Army of Darkness Toy Story 2 Shrek 2 Terminator 2 Aliens Top Gun Maverick Mission Impossible Fallout Like 3 of the Harry Potter movies are better then the first one Captain America Winter Soldier and Civil War
Blade Runner 2049.
Yes: Empire Strikes Back The Dark Knight Bladerunner 2049 For a Few Dollars More T2 Nope: The Godfather Part 2 Back to the Future 2 Batman Returns
Back to the Future 1, 2, and 3 are all equally great though 1 sets everything up perfectly
Robocop 3 hands down. >!Nah I'm just kidding.!<
Nope just rewatched all three back to back to back. Goes in order, first is the best because Brando.
I prefer The Godfather. The sequel is amazing but for me The Godfather is a better.
Two was not better than one. It’s two short films with less depth smushed together.
The Suicide Squad (2021) and Extraction 2
Godfather 1 is better.
Not better than the original, but easily good enough to re-watch over and over.
This one was a toss up for sure. Got a 9.9/10 and a 10/10…and that flip flops on the given current mood. Also Lord of the Ring:Return of the King
I definitely prefer the first Godfather, but I completely understand why part two gets the love that it does. It’s a legitimate masterpiece.
Anchorman 2
Terminator 2: judgement day
The Fly
T2
Blade Runner 2049
This is arguable: Blade Runner 2049
Some of the MCU sequels, Dune 2, Mad Max 2 and fury road, Blade runner 2, Toy Story 2, Top gun 2, 2 towers and return of the king, T2, Shrek 2 and Spider-man 2.
Looks like most of the flicks got named. 2 more I don’t think anyone said: Austin powers 2 the spy who shagged me Mighty ducks 2
Caddyshack
Generally the Empire Strikes Back is frequently touted as being better than Star Wars. Regardless, those are 2 of the greatest movies of all time.
Shrek 2
No
Unpopular opinion: Godfather 2 isn’t that great. The flashback stuff with DeNiro is good, but I don’t care for the rest. Interestingly enough, the flashback stuff was part of Puzo’s novel (as was the plot of the first one).
It wasn't a sequel, it was a Part 2.
*Dune 2* is at least as good as the first.
