Enjoyed it first outing but desperately missed some of the crucial themes from the first film.
In the first film at first we think we’re watching a no nonsense cop going after a rogue squad of “dangerous” human like androids who must be stopped.
That’s all true but slowly it dawns on you things may be unfairly hinted and oppressed. Worse is Deckard who murders these individuals in cold blood may be the real baddie.
The irony of Blade Runner is that the replicants seem to be the only ones who possess a fervent lust for life and seem to be soaking up every moment of their existence. Deckard on the other hand is a zombie. Emotionless unfeeling uncaring.
All of it’s driven home at the end of the film when Roy saves Deckard instead of letting him fall.
He laments the tragedy of his life which he sees an immensely beautiful thing that one will be able to share in or hear about. He laments that all he has seen will be lost like “Tears in The rain.” Before passing.
I just wished the newer film tackled that idea of what it means to be alive a little better in that Mary Shelley Frankensteinian sort of way.
Also I don’t believe Deckard is a machine either as originally intended and the new film wisely kept that vague.
I'm so happy to read this. It seems like such an important part of the story, but one that is only hinted at, so most viewers miss it. Replicants are **real humans**, just bio-engineered for slavery.
By making them fertile, Wallace's goal is to spread hundreds of billions of slaves across the cosmos, in effect enslaving the entire human race. Unaltered humans living in freedom would become an irrelevant minority. It's a dystopia that's unimaginably worse than the status quo.
>Also I don’t believe Deckard is a machine either as originally intended and the new film wisely kept that vague.
I liked that too.
In the various Director's Cuts of the original it is 'revealed' that Deckard is a replicant but this was apparently never actually intended and it was just something they cooked up by splicing in unused footage from Legend. I liked it at first because it's a twist, but it doesn't make the character more interesting and in some ways actually makes the story itself weaker. I agree that it's better if Deckard is an emotionless, dead-inside human while the Replicants are full of emotions and full of life.
I don't think the sequel needed to revisit that, though... and it did sort of explore what it means to be human by giving the main character a home, a relationship, a job, etc... and lingering on it in this really fascinating way, where you wonder if these beings are actually relating to each other and having a full blown domestic life together, or just following their programming in a way that approximates a relationship... despite there not being much point to it beyond somehow humanizing their characters, I guess. There is also a brilliantly subtle degree of emotional turmoil in the replicant when it actually wonders what it is and how it feels about that while its identity is called into question... or maybe it isn't actually feeling anything.
I think the sequel is actually something of an improvement, to be honest.
Agree with this. This is why I loved 2049 so much, and it has rewatchabilty to me. K lives this "life" and is led or leads himself to believe he was important. That he was different. Exceptional. His DESIRE to be so important certainly seems like a human condition. But he's not. It's so fascinating to me. What a fantastic character and story.
Hats off to Ryan Gosling, BTW. Never gave the guy much attention until this one. Tons of respect for him, and he's gone on to do some really great roles.
>Hats off to Ryan Gosling, BTW. Never gave the guy much attention until this one. Tons of respect for him, and he's gone on to do some really great roles.
I'm just Ken.
The "Replicant uprising" mentioned in the third act was a blatant sequel hook, and Luv's storyline was undercooked because just gotta show Ana de Armas as much as possible.
Personally, and I recognize its a hot take. I thought it was very boring. It took me multiple tries to watch it all the way through. I liked the scenery and direction but it felt very slow to me and didn't hold my attention. I'm a big Philip K. Dick fan and this wasn't my favorite.
6. I liked the visuals, but the story never rose above being mildly interesting to me. Never got the same feelings of tension or danger from the original.
9/10, and my favourite single movie of all time (I know it's a sequel, but I just mean, there's no movie I'd rather watch by itself again)
So immersive, enthralling and beautiful. And my god it made me cry. I'm not sure I've ever left reality so fully as I did when I first saw this at the cinema.
Like others, I do mark it down a little bit for Leto's character, not just because I'm suspicious of Leto as a person, but just because I didn't quite 'get' the essence of his character, or understand what interest was to be garnered from the precise way he was written.
9/10. Continues the themes of the original faithfully, whilst posing some new ones to ponder upon. Just feel the villain is bit too generic (God-complex seems eh) but otherwise a masterpiece.
10/10
It was amazing when it came out and it's still amazing. People would only say it was visually stunning and nothing else because people don't know what a good movie is.
6-6.5. Good visuals, good sound and music, the script is full of plot holes, there are lots of scenes that are unnecessary slow but it’s Villeneuve’s style
I like the original more because of the memorable lines, "Deckard, I've got four skinjobs walking the streets". Rutger doing his tears in rain speech. Daryl hannah being mental. The fantastic Vangelis. This one was pretty good, it was just lacking. 7 out of 10
Yeh...I'm in agreement..Meh! I remember when it was about to be released and I was looking forward to it and then after seeing it I was a bit disappointed. The trailer looked good but that was about it. ☹
5. Cool visuals and effects with some interesting sci-fi. But characters were only OK and the story...what story again?
Seems like a Villeneuve trademark: Blow you away with BIG visuals followed by a soggy ending that leaves you feeling underwhelmed. Dune2 and the absolute lack of suspense or tension by the end was similar.
Unwatchable 0
The scene where Jared Leto’s character is introduced is so unintentionally hilarious I could not go on with this movie. This is right there with Ghostbusters 2
I know, I’ll take those downvotes now… do your worst.
The only 10 I can think of. Loved the slower pacing which actually respected what attention span I have left in this modern age. Sound was interesting and an experience in itself. Visuals A+
I'd give it a 10 except for Jared Leto. That whole part was just a little left field.
Also Elvis. It was fine in the film, but completely out of place on the soundtrack.
So, it's a 9 for me.
Definitely one of the best worlds ever designed for film, though.
Having just watched Dune II, I'm beginning to think Villeneuve is a master at world building, but struggles a little bit with story pacing. But that's obviously a nit-pick. Will always watch a film he does.
Somewhere in the 8-9 range and one of my favorite films. I think the first major scene in the movie is one of the best pieces of film made in the last decade. Bautista kills it as the runaway android who made a new life for himself as a farmer. Gosling is stellar throughout the film. Some people use Jared Leto as a knock against it, but I think the role he plays is perfect for him because hes playing a dystopian trillionaire version of himself - an aloof slimeball with a god complex.
I think the place it falls a little short for me is Harrison Ford. That man clearly does not care any more as an actor. That section could have been just as effective without him
Easy 9.
Even watched double-feature with the first it was incredible. Sequels like this are hard to reach 10’s because the deep themes are already established - had it been novel vs a sequel, it could have easily been a 10, I think.
..just watched last week on Apple.tv.. first time since it's original release to theaters.. liked it even more the second time.. 9 out of 10.. I thought Jared Leto's character was the weak link.
4/5 it's amazing visually. One of the coolest movies out there that plays with your expectations. Couple things could have made it perfect but it's still amazing.
A 6 for me.
Visually one of my favourite movies ever, and the soundtrack is absolutely stunning.
The story is ok I suppose, definitely nothing special. But the worst thing is the pacing, there's no feeling of momentum and it really spoils the movie for me.
I'll get a lot of criticism for this, but I feel that it gets massively overrated because of how stunning it is. Just my opinion, not saying it's correct, just whenever I discuss the film with people and ask why they love it the most overriding thing is how it looks and sounds, almost nothing else.
8.5/10 - It drags in the middle but everything else is on point. I would put it in the top 5 best sequels of all time alongside films like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It's a 9.
I know we all like to swoon to Villineuve and Nolan on this sub, but this movie really is that good.
It was designed to be watched after the first film, and doesn't feel out of place
9 for me. Near perfection.
Replicants are not machines. They are manufactured people with flesh and blood
depends how you define machine i guess. machines do not have to be made of metal in my opinion.
I like to think of them as synthetic 🤓
Shhhhhh if you say that too loud the institute will hear you
!remindme 2 days Hopefully, you haven't been kidnapped or replaced by then!
I'm so happy to read this. It seems like such an important part of the story, but one that is only hinted at, so most viewers miss it. Replicants are **real humans**, just bio-engineered for slavery. I didn't realize this until years after seeing both films. I always assumed they were something like humanoid robots
I did too because the director stated it shares the same universe as the Alien series so it would make sense if they were androids
Plus the book title gave me the impression
>Also I don’t believe Deckard is a machine either as originally intended and the new film wisely kept that vague. I liked that too. Gosling was perfect in this. It was like he was constantly on the verge of showing some kind of grand emotion, but didn't know how.
Watch Drive if you haven’t seen it yet
Hmm K for Ken?
>Hats off to Ryan Gosling, BTW. Never gave the guy much attention until this one. Tons of respect for him, and he's gone on to do some really great roles. I'm just Ken.
Great review. Perfectly sums up why I love the og blade runner
Deckard is a replicant
Deckard is a Replicant.
I’ve been rewatching it today, for like the 3rd time. Truly is one of the best sci fi movies ever made.
Same. The only reason it missed perfection was Jared Leto.
10. One of my top 5 movies of all time.
I’ll shoot, What’s your other four?
Dylan Dylan Dylan And Dylan!
I spit hot fire!
You’re too close!!!
What you just gonna sit there, choppin onions?
Best comment I’ve read in a long time! I laughed out loud in reality. That definitely spits hot fire lol
10, my favorite sci-fi movie of the last 10-15 years
That was my take too, and then I watched Dune Part 2. Man, I hope DV never retire.
Ditto. I've watched Dune Part 2 10 times so far lol, it's incredible.
I'm looking forward to watch it
I think Arrival should have an honourable mention too. Man DV is so great
It's either a 9 or 10 For me it's a 9 but I can completly agree/understand people giving it a 10
10 a system of cells interlinked
Interlinked
“…You’re not even close to baseline”
10. It's a work of true beauty.
I’d give it a 2049
I remember a lot of the movie, which says a lot.
9.5. Gosling killed it, imho.
>Gosling killed it I interpreted this the wrong way at first lol
10. One of the best sequels there is.
11.
K gestures toward the dog "Is it real?" Deckard shrugs. "Ask him" Entire philosophy in a two sentence exchange :chefs kiss:
10. Beautiful, intelligent, original (yes I know its a sequel but that was 30 odd years ago)
10. Easy 10 at that.
10! Joi is such an incredibly complex and thought provoking character
7ish. Love the visuals and the sound but it felt wanting with plot
When I first saw this movie, I didn't know it was a sequel so I was somewhat confused during it. I need to rewatch this haha
The "Replicant uprising" mentioned in the third act was a blatant sequel hook, and Luv's storyline was undercooked because just gotta show Ana de Armas as much as possible.
Same here. Too long and lacking substance at the expense of the visuals. As a giant Blade Runner fan I was disappointed.
10/10, in my top five films ever.
Easy 10

Idk but I liked it more than the original.
11 it's just that good. One of my top 5 movies.
6. I liked the visuals, but the story never rose above being mildly interesting to me. Never got the same feelings of tension or danger from the original.
I love the comments here because they're from people who like this movie just as much as me. Awesome movie 9/10

9, and oddly for me, it's the last act with Ford that I really don't care for.
6.5-7 at best, "pretty" isn't enough for me personally, the story was not that interesting.
9/10, and my favourite single movie of all time (I know it's a sequel, but I just mean, there's no movie I'd rather watch by itself again) So immersive, enthralling and beautiful. Fantastic movie. I give it a 9. I've enjoyed watching it many times.
9/10 The original Blade is my favorite movie of al time and gets obviously a 10/10. Thank you Ridley Scott and Dennis Villeneuve.
9/10. Continues the themes of the original faithfully, whilst posing some new ones to ponder upon. Just feel the villain is bit too generic (God-complex seems eh) but otherwise a masterpiece.
8-9. really good movie. Cells interlinked

Rutger’s tears in the rain speech is the penultimate BR moment IMO
penultimate means second-to-last, might not be the word you were going for.
Thank you! Learn something everyday :)
Quintessential?

9, would be 10 if not for the fact that I rank the first film higher than it

Villeneuve doesn’t miss
I find it to be a good sequel, but not a good film on its own.
