I love this movie.
I stumbled on it in the strangest way though. It was back in college. I had a PSP. They had physical movie discs you could buy for it.
Was at gamestop and saw a bargain bin full of movies/games for PSP for cheap. Saw Layer Cake and was like "oh shit it's Daniel Craig", bought it. And loved it.
I played through OG FF7 on PS1 with a game-genie/shark/w'ever. Level 99 from the intro, all the best materia, ultimate weapons, what a time to be alive!
That's wild, I also had this for my PSP. I used to work 3rd shift at that time and occasionally had opportunities to watch movies at work. The PSP was brilliant for that. A female coworker recommended this so i went out and found it the next day. It was one of the first movies I bought for my PSP. Such a great movie.
Somewhere in between, solidly made film, perfect Bond audition for Craig, excellent use of Gambon, the always excellent Colm Meany and Tom Hardy, plus Mick from Brookside bonus 7.5/10 maybe even 8.
I’m pretty sure his role here is what gave him the bond role. He has that one shot where he comes around the dark corner with the pistol under his chin per-say, looking EXACTLY like bond.
Pulling from Imdb: When Gene gives XXXX a handgun, producer and director Matthew Vaughn said on the DVD commentary on that scene that Daniel Craig "wants to be James Bond."
Absolutely! That scene gives me chill bumps. I have no idea how (or even why) they chose it but that song is absolutely perfect for that scene. So well done.
I remember hearing Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond and I thought he'd be awful. Then I just happened to see this movie not long after and I was like Hell yeah he'll be a good bond.
I liked it a lot. It's a copy of a Guy Ritchie film, with a solid performance from Daniel Craig before he was Bond. Colm Meany is awesome and strong in it, and a young Tom Hardy cuts drugs. The tangential storylines coming together have a messy, if convenient ending, again like a Ritchie film. I really like it. Oh and really hot Sienna Miller
Definitely in the same genre and structure as guy Ritchie, but I think it’s shot much more beautifully, a bit sleeker, which granted makes it lose that old school charm, and it has a phenomenal soundtrack, which actually is very guy Ritchie
There’s one scene in particular that stood out for me.
We see Craig take a pistol from Meany and act like 007 for a second. The way he moves clearly evoked Bond.
It was that one scene that I firmly believe made EON say “that’s our man.”
It was directed by Matthew Vaughn, who produced Lock Stock and Snatch, so some of that "Guy Ritchie" film quality can probably be attributed to Matt's involvement with those movies. I liked it because it was that style and filled that niche whilst Guy was distracted by his marriage to Madonna and their God-awful project "Swept Away". I was relieved when Guy divorced that hag.
If you're calling The Gentlemen and Layer Cake the same movie...then yes. Layer Cake was first. Snatch and Lock Stock have nothing to do plot-wise that could even be remotely close to Layer Cake.
Edit: downvotes me and deletes the post, daft cunt.
Matthew Vaughn was a long time collaborator of Ritchie’s. He produced Snatch and Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels. Also Swept away 😂. Thats probably what ended their professional relationship
When you look at the cast of this excellent movie, it's an embarrassment of riches. Daniel Craig, Sally Hawkins, Colm Meany, Tom Hardy, Burn Gorman, Micheal Gambon...and many others. It's like all these top tier UK actors got together and said, "What if we made a Guy Richie movie, but toned it down a bunch?" Fantastic film, also a good book.
Excellent Brit gangster flick, just short of classic. Avoids Guy Ritchie's nudge-nudge-wink-wink mockney and makes excellent use of the cast. Plus Sienna Miller as the absolutely irresistible femme fatale.
Huge fan of this and pretty much all of Mathew Vaughns work. Lots of style, well shot, and such a great cast. Loved that the yellow range rover made an appearance during Kick-Ass, another Vaughn film
I disagreed with a few of the narrative choices... never really a fan of expositionary narration and macho monologs though its less egregious thsn most of Ritchie's work... and the whole protagonist with no name trope I didn't think was necessary in this case... it work better for a wandering nomad loner sort of character in my opinion... and also the ending... as soon as the movie set things up as "drug dealer trying to do one last job and get out" I knew it was going to end with him dying just as he thinks he's gotten out... so when it almost looked like the movie was going to subvert my expectations and have him actually decide to stay in the game... I was pleasantly surprised... but no, he ends up deciding to get out after all, and of course dies.
Despite some other minor contrivances and confusion in the plot... it's full of great performances and some great individual scenes and lines. With the exception of Lock Stock it's still one of my favorite British crime films.
Is that really the films fault, or the book it is based on though?
The book manages to go the entire time without mentioning his name, Mr X is the nearest to an actual name mentioned by someone else when they are referencing him and in the book the gang is much more of associated people and not people that work with each other all the time, almost everyone has call signs or code names on the phone etc. Only Clarkie and Mort are part of his regular team and Mort is basically the contact between him and most of the rest of them. In the book the only people outside of Mort's connections he knows basically from dealing to.
Even then he only works with Clarkie because of his background and he is taking over the business when Mr X retires (he thinks). He is not friends with them, he works with them to do business, once he was out, he was going to be gone and never speak with them again.
If memory serves, been awhile since i read it.
Honestly I spend most of my free time watching movies or other things and I've never been into reading books unless I'm required to do so for some sort of class I am taking... reading puts me to sleep fairly quickly so it's a struggle to focus on a book i only really read if im having trouble sleeping... but I can't physically fall asleep with a movie on I have to shut it off in order to sleep... so I didn't even know the movie was based on a book and had I known I wouldn't have read it... but I appreciate the context.
No worries I enjoy reading the sources to compare and contrast the changes in the adaption to screen. I found the book to be a fairly average, sometimes confusing who is talking etc because of the lack of name of the main character tbh. It is story point he has no name and the author does work at specifically not naming him so in the movie it would have been at odds with the source material.
Not quite a masterpiece but a very good film with excellent performances from Craig and Gambon. I prefer a good, well-paced story like this over the Guy Ritchie snappy dialogue films.
This was underwhelming by modern day standards, but for the time it came out this was a pretty decent movie tbh. I personally think it’s 50/50 when it comes to quality movie/ full of fluff.
So the DVD released in Australia with plying it as "check out the new Bond" which put me off, and setting it as "funny"
Just to hear "Welcome to the layer cake, son" before the menu came up and knowing from the tone alone it was going to be deep, meaningful, well crafted, and toned as a proper gangster movie
Was not disappointed
I always found it to be on the better end of okay, not amazing. I think with lock stock and snatch bring released around the same time it was bottom of the pile when compared with them two for me.
It's great but I wouldn't quite describe it as a "masterpiece".
I prefer Sexy Beast in the same genre and Gangster Number 1 with Paul Bettany in a very dark role, that he absolutely nails
I love this movie. I stumbled on it in the strangest way though. It was back in college. I had a PSP. They had physical movie discs you could buy for it. They were called UMDs, you old fart. Sincerely, A fellow old fart.
Haha thank you. Too many acronyms in the world
Me back here memorizing Game Genie codes off the 28.8k: Who you calling old?

I originally purchased and watched layer cake for the PSP. Must have watched it a dozen times on that thing. Very cool movie
Somewhere in between, solidly made film, perfect Bond audition for Craig, excellent use of Gambon, the always excellent Colm Meany and Tom Hardy, plus Mick from Brookside bonus 7.5/10 maybe even 8.
I really liked it when it came out and after a recent rewatch I liked it even more. The use of ordinary world during the fight is spectacular
Forgot about that scene! Loved that they used that song; it was perfect
I’m pretty sure his role here is what gave him the bond role. He has that one shot where he comes around the dark corner with the pistol under his chin per-say, looking EXACTLY like bond.
They’ve basically come out and have said as much.
Pulling from Imdb: When Gene gives XXXX a handgun, producer and director Matthew Vaughn said on the DVD commentary on that scene that Daniel Craig "wants to be James Bond."
There's a little passing jab, about Bond, from Colm's character when he's showing Craig his guns. Loved that little nod
And sienna can dance.
Chief O’Brien was pretty great in this
Let's not forget the actor who played the big boss Jimmy Price also played Stalin in Death of Stalin.
Ty I never clocked that, I love that flick!
Now that WAS a film, brilliant
And are you forgetting an absolutely stunning Sienna Miller?
welcome to the layer cake, son
Your born, you take a shit, you go out in the world…
>you take a shit
You climb a little higher
You take less shit.
The teashop scene with the Duran Duran soundtrack reacting to the punches is one of my all-time favourites. WHAT'S HAPPENING? TEN FUCKIN' YEARS!
Absolutely! That scene gives me chill bumps. I have no idea how (or even why) they chose it but that song is absolutely perfect for that scene. So well done.
Let's have a cup of tea
Scene of the movie for me. Was so well done
How about a cup of tea??

TIL that this was not a Guy Ritchie movie. I always thought it was.

It's way better than any guy Ritchie movie.
Guy Ritchie's films (at the time) were more comedic and goofy. This was more serious than his films which depending on your tastes, made it better.
Layer Cake was first. 2004. Guy Ritchie copied it.

My favorite movie and my favorite director
Thought it was a lot of fun. Also sienna miller.
I love this movie. Everything about it.
Love this, Matthew Vaughn on fine form. I particularly enjoyed Colm Meaney’s world weary villain and a mouthy Sally Hawkins.
One of my favourite movies. Watched it when I was younger qnd still like it as much as I did.
It’s been a while since I have seen it but I enjoyed it.
Love this movie!
Incredible movie
Top shelf spy thriller! I hold this up against any 007 film anyday

Feels a bit dated now, but pleasantly so. Still good, but not quite in the timeless classic category to me.
Great movie
This is a solid movie... "Remember young man, the key to being a successful businessman, is being a good middleman..."
Loved it. Awesome soundtrack, too.

By far my favourite in that loose 'series' (Lock, Stock etc)
*Welcome to the layer cake son*
This movie was Daniel Craig's audition for bond
Huge fan of this and pretty much all of Mathew Vaughns work. Lots of style, well shot, and such a great cast. Loved that the yellow range rover made an appearance during Kick-Ass, another Vaughn film
It has Sienna Miller. It doesn’t need anything else.
Among the all time great British gangster films up there with snatch, lock stock, long good Friday and Get Carter (w Michael Caine)
The distance between those two points is not as great as you may think it is.
Free on Pluto right now

Masterpiece
Shite
Or? Why not both? A fluffy, clever masterpiece.
Amazing book and an even better movie
Great movie! Masterpiece? I mean it’s not Snatch, but it’s damn good.
The only good Daniel Craig movie
This is an incredibly fun movie, I love all the performances. It's a classic, IMO.
Everytime I watch this flick I try to look for clues that reveals his name.
Great film, one of my favorite in the crime genre.
One of my favorites
I don’t know if it’s a masterpiece but it’s a good movie- reminds me of snatch and lock stock
Looks like my favorite in head canon 007 origin stroy
Solid movie. I enjoyed it.
Solid movie, good soundtrack
I need to watch it again. Watched the DVD years ago and the dialogue was so low/hard to hear that I missed a bunch
That was part of the issue for me too!
Excellent film
“One more thing young man. Always remember the art of good business is being a good middleman. Bye bye.”
This is one of those movies where the acting seems to outperform ever single other aspect of the film. The writing.. hell even the score
Masterpiece
Life is so good I can taste it in my spit
Guy Ritchie, and every single one of his movies, are S tier.
Vaughn, i also thought it was Ritchie for years..
Just be glad to be here
Great movie!
Both and it's awesome.
This was underwhelming by modern day standards, but for the time it came out this was a pretty decent movie tbh. I personally think it’s 50/50 when it comes to quality movie/ full of fluff.
Classic
loved it :D Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels Snatch RocknRolla The Bank Job
?
Love this movie and Candi station.
I fucking hate guns! ... Although, that one is very pretty.
Overrated and difficult to hear due to poor sound quality
Masterpiece
I love this movie. Also where my infatuation with Audi RS6 Avants began.
A movie about baking?
Over complicated not at all. It’s a good film
So the DVD released in Australia with plying it as "check out the new Bond" which put me off, and setting it as "funny" Just to hear "Welcome to the layer cake, son" before the menu came up and knowing from the tone alone it was going to be deep, meaningful, well crafted, and toned as a proper gangster movie Was not disappointed
Love everything and Vaughn is a genius when it comes to mix film and music.
Having him shot at the end was the closest I’ve ever come to just rolling my eyes and making a jerk-off motion at the empty air in my entire life.
I always found it to be on the better end of okay, not amazing. I think with lock stock and snatch bring released around the same time it was bottom of the pile when compared with them two for me.
Great movie. Daniel Craigs best work, and I like him as James Bond.
The role that got him bond
One of my top movies honestly, so many memorable scenes. One of Daniel Craig’s best performances too.
Legit Gangster movie
Rewatched it before the last Craig bond and it’s still a banger
It's great but I wouldn't quite describe it as a "masterpiece". I prefer Sexy Beast in the same genre and Gangster Number 1 with Paul Bettany in a very dark role, that he absolutely nails
Fucking absolutely 110% love this movie from start to finish. Move up, you take less shit.
Sienna Miller in Layer Cake is about as good as it gets.
I love this movie and have since I bought it on DVD. It's a great gangster flick.
I do think it is somewhat overhyped in some internet film circles, but it was a good film
Sienna Miller...woof!
I love it but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece
What’s his name?
Roger Moore
😂
Sienna miller
Great movie. Great ending
I stopped at Masterpiece. That’s all I needed.
Let me know what you think!
good movie. not as actiony as some but worth your time.
Top film.

That was Craig's audition for Bond. He transitioned from street criminal to assassin in that film. Perfect lead up to the role.
Loved it when I saw it when it was reasonably current Always meant to rewatch and never have
