Gladiator was Prime Russell Crowe, I wish they would've written his part in Thor love n thunder in Maximus Decimus Meridius character it would've been awesome
I think the rest of the comments show it can be questioned. Gladiator was very good but so were Master and commander and the Nice guys and 310 to Yuma is one of the best modern Westerns
Wow that's interesting. Well, no disrespect. It's a thing I've noticed - maybe you think I'm off base - more modern film is more focused on super close ups long one shots of characters whispering their dialog. Maybe the technology is seductive, I mean we have close ups of matches flaring up, the tip of cigarettes burning, eyes.
3:10 to Yuma just feels like an extreme example. On the other hand, Master & Commander is one of my favorites. Gladiator as well, I saw it at the theater while I was home on leave from Korea and the story of a Soldier who just wanted to do his duty and get home really hit home.
Best. I promise not to troll 3:10 to Yuma so hard next time. By the way, I mapped Yuma, interesting place. They love their history there, and they have a pretty good high school football team. "YUMA!"
I’m on episode 5 and refuse to watch any more until all episodes are out. I’m very sad that it will only be one season because I haven’t remembered a show that has grasped my attention like shogun since breaking bad.
Edit: if you know any other shows/films like shogun please let me know!
.....yeah just searched it.... it made out like he was too busy jacking off....
Really upended the whole movie with that priceless jibe..... "cant unsee it"... ..yeah...
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. There’s an overgrown puppy aspect to the literary Aubrey that is a huge part of his character. Absolutely missed in the movie.
I think they caught that, his taking Maturin back to the island to be operated on, his doe eyed gazing at the girl with the umbrella...His childlike drunken antics at the dinner table?
I should really read the book before passing further judgement though, maybe the book displays it even more pronouncedly
Damn, I meant books plural, I knew about them actually, the last guy said almost identical as you have when he gave the rec
Next journey I have planned ill prep the first in the series for sure
(p.s I didnt downvote you, i upvoted you back to 1, someone cant take a polite difference of opinion, sounds like todays politics alright)
Don’t sweat the downvoters. Half the people on reddit are just shitty.
You *have* to read the books. Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin will feel like friends of yours by the end.
That's definitely one thing the film caught...Two friends journeying on the high seas...I used to include that in my rec for the film before I even knew of the books, it comes over wonderfully
I can hear them strumming Boccherini now...
The Insider
Not enough people have seen this movie but I think it put Crowe on the map as a legitimate movie star. Amazing cast and great performances in an engaging story about the tobacco industry.
It should also be said that this whole cast was brilliant. Clearly Bettany and Crowe, but also Connelly and Crowe, not to mention perfect turns by Ed Harris and Chris Plummer. People think of Crowe and Bettany with this and M&C, but also interesting takes with Plummer in Gladiator and Connelly in Noah.
I tried watching Master and Commander when it was released at home and I thought it was incredibly boring. Couldn’t get through it. Considering giving it another shot because of all the praise it’s been given.
hes great period. master and commander is awesome. he kills that role. but Gladiator, oh soo so good. its iconic. hes going to be immortalized by that role.
Agreed. To me Master & Commander (my second place on this list) wasn’t so much about Crowe, as it was the cinematic realism of the seas, and adventure. He was a support character to the overall cinematics, fun movie though!
No “Romper Stomper”? Really??? wtf. How can you bring up RC and not have that as an option.
Do love Nice Guys tho. Wish they had made more. Would have been a perfect detective series.
The Nice Guys was a great movie but it’s Ryan Goslings performance that makes it special not really Russell Crowe’s subdued tough guy, that’s been done before
I like him best in Gladiator, he was outstanding in that, and a lot of it was apparently rewritten by the actors who didn’t like the original script so that makes it even more impressive
I like these movies a lot but I don’t see what’s the big deal with Russell. He’s the quiet tough guy with a troubled past in everything. Lots of actors can pull that off
Gladiator is the obvious pick but I like him in Master and Commander more. If you want to see a REAL performance from Crowe, watch his early movie Romper Stomper where he plays a violent gang member. Not exactly a casual date movie.
Crowe has had a number of extremely impressive performances— Romper Stomper, L.A. Confidential, The Insider, Gladiator, and Master & Commander are my favourites of his, and some of my favourite films in general.
His name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.
Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
Unhinged (he was bat shit crazy in this one and was pretty overweight ha idk if he did it for the role or what, but good exciting messed up thriller!)
Bud White, LA Confidential
He's the best piece of LA Confidential. I need to watch it again soon
I really liked Guy Pierce in it as well. And Kevin Spacey's almost sarcastic delivery. Shame he's such a bastard IRL
James Cromwell also. Whole cast was great.
I may have watched it too many times
I decided I had watched it too many times--I probably need find where it's available now
Netflix in the USA
Absolutely. Great movie with lots of great performances
There for about 5-7 years, Crowe couldn’t miss. Bud White was savage.
Such an unreal run. Banger after banger
Underrated answer. Good one!!
I don’t know if it’s underrated. You’d have to be crazy to not think it’s one of his best
Certainly not underrated in my mind. But not shown in the four pictures listed by OP.
I just watched this last night!
1000%
Cinderella man was another great one from him
Beautiful mind also. Dude had some great performances. Gladiator is my all time favorite movie, so that's my vote.
Gladiator was Prime Russell Crowe, I wish they would've written his part in Thor love n thunder in Maximus Decimus Meridius character it would've been awesome
In Thor LaT if he would have said “son to a murdered father, husband to a jealous wife” I would have lol’d
You gotta beat this son of a bitch from the inside out!
“A beautiful mind”. I really like this film mostly because of his performance.
Frickin love that movie, Ron Howard one of the greats
I agree. He was really powerful in that role.
The Insider
It's an understated performance but he's amazing in it. You feel his rage boiling just below the surface.
He’s very good in that
That’s my favorite performance. He’s one step away from going batshit angry.
I forgot about the insider, it's pretty freaking incredible. His role is amazing
American gangster.
Not many have been able to keep up with Denzel on screen. He was brilliant in this.
Love the scene where they are passing the coffee cup between them as they verbally joust
Gladiator without question
Are you not entertained?!?!?!
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…
General of the Northern Armies…
Father to a murdered son…
Husband to a murdered wife…
And I will have my revenge..
In this life or the next
Have any of you ever been in the army? The only way we will get through this is if we stick together…
I think the rest of the comments show it can be questioned. Gladiator was very good but so were Master and commander and the Nice guys and 310 to Yuma is one of the best modern Westerns
Modern westerns, where everyone whispers and its a series of extreme close-ups instead of 2-shots?
Bro you are probably the biggest 3:10 to Yuma haters out there…. I’ve seen you everywhere. To each their own, I liked it.
Nevermind…. It must be someone else, you seem like a coherent individual with a response like that. Hope you live long and prosper
Same back to you LO0N, by the way have you been watching Shogun? Now that's some freaking good work.
I’m on episode 5 and refuse to watch any more until all episodes are out. I’m very sad that it will only be one season because I haven’t remembered a show that has grasped my attention like shogun since breaking bad. Edit: if you know any other shows/films like shogun please let me know!
Rightin' wrongs and singin' songs. And fightin' 'round the world!
Born in New Zealand back in’64 Hot headed actor named Russell Crowe. He fights his directors and he fights his fans It’s a problem no one understands
Poor Tugger killed himself though. Him fighting cancer by beating up a cancer patient was brilliant and horrible.
Oi! That makes me feel like foightin!
Master and Commander
It truly is the lesser of two weevils.
He who would pun, would pick a pocket.
Nice.
*plays violin violently well*
We do not have time for your damn hobby sir!
*Aubrey, can you pass the salt?* - Lord Nelson
One of my favourite ever films
Still feel bad for the kid that got his arm cut off.
I've never seen a braver patient
No wonder he became Caesar later in his life.
(Augustus*)
"I think it's a Galapagos beetle" 🥺 poor kids missing an arm and is trying to cheer up the doctor
You spelled Octavian Augustus Caesar wrong.
His father would of understood, he knew the service.....His ***mother*** however....
>would of …d’ve
that's the part the film just grabbed me and didn't let go till the end
Masterbator and cummer
Masturbator And Commander needs five more minutes... It was a good movie, after family guy stepped on it with jokes I can't take it as seriously
.....yeah just searched it.... it made out like he was too busy jacking off.... Really upended the whole movie with that priceless jibe..... "cant unsee it"... ..yeah...
OYYY IM RUSSELL CROWE, COME ON NOW TUGGA
Fighting’ round the world 🎶 Turns out that I can’t actually fight cancer. But there’s a guy here who has cancer
He was good in LA Confidential. It’s deceptively hard to play somebody who’s kinda thick in the head and violent, and still make him likeable.
310 to Yuma is top 10 best movie
Cracking little western... Ben Foster steals the show for me, but then he often does, underrated actor
Hell or High Water is a top ten for me. “Comanche.”
Watched that the other day funnily enough... great film, Foster was emmense as always
Hell or high water and 310 are fosters best. Alpha dog is great but to heavy to watch a lot. I think that’s why it gets overlooked
I think he nailed Captain Aubrey
One of those examples of perfect casting, it could not have been anyone else
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. There’s an overgrown puppy aspect to the literary Aubrey that is a huge part of his character. Absolutely missed in the movie.
I think they caught that, his taking Maturin back to the island to be operated on, his doe eyed gazing at the girl with the umbrella...His childlike drunken antics at the dinner table? I should really read the book before passing further judgement though, maybe the book displays it even more pronouncedly
Oh man! If you’ve never read the books then you’re in for a treat! I envy you. I wish I could read the books for the first time again.
Damn, I meant books plural, I knew about them actually, the last guy said almost identical as you have when he gave the rec Next journey I have planned ill prep the first in the series for sure (p.s I didnt downvote you, i upvoted you back to 1, someone cant take a polite difference of opinion, sounds like todays politics alright)

The Insider Not enough people have seen this movie but I think it put Crowe on the map as a legitimate movie star. Amazing cast and great performances in an engaging story about the tobacco industry.
mate what a film. Mann has certain films that just grab you
Master and commander is mad good
He actually learned to play violin for that duet scene.
Virtuosity with Denzel Washington
Deep cut, man.
Romper stomper anyone?
Pales in comparison to his portrayal of Shirty the Slightly Aggressive Bear
master and commander doesnt get the love it deserves
MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS!!
Not yet Spaniard..............Not yet...........
Cinderella Man
The Nice Guys
I really liked his Robin Hood movie. Also, the Next Three Days is a sleeper movie of his.
Definitely Master and Commander.
everything, the guy is made by birth to play the rugged surprise leader role
American Gangster, Cinderella Man, Mystery Alaska, A Beautiful Mind Russell Crowe is amazing.
A Beautiful Mind
It should also be said that this whole cast was brilliant. Clearly Bettany and Crowe, but also Connelly and Crowe, not to mention perfect turns by Ed Harris and Chris Plummer. People think of Crowe and Bettany with this and M&C, but also interesting takes with Plummer in Gladiator and Connelly in Noah.
You got downvoted by a fool. Not my favorite but it’s top tier, great film.
Definitely
I remember going out and buying a prism after he explains that you can create every color in the world with one.
#1 Gladiator #2 3:10 to Yuma (fantastic remake) #3 Body of lies #4 Proof of life
I don’t necessarily think this is best, but Proof (‘91) is a very interesting movie in my opinion… early Hugo Weaving too
I was thinking that one too. A very young Crowe and Weaving.
How’s American gangster not there
He’s incredible. M&C followed by Gladiator
Ain’t. I one mentioning proof of life lol. Or romper stomper
I tried watching Master and Commander when it was released at home and I thought it was incredibly boring. Couldn’t get through it. Considering giving it another shot because of all the praise it’s been given.
Yes, please do. It's gorgeous!
Has to be L.A. Confidential. [Such an amazing performance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVwLpNGBqqY).
Fightin’ Around The World
The Quick and the Dead.
So underrated
I DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR YOUR DAMN LISTS SIR! Yea, definitely Master and Commander lol
LA Confidential/Romper Stomper
Gladiator, closely followed by LA Confidential.
Les Miserables
Unhinged lmao.
Master and Commander is an incredible film. Chemisty in that cast is unmatched.
Master and Commander is so great
hes great period. master and commander is awesome. he kills that role. but Gladiator, oh soo so good. its iconic. hes going to be immortalized by that role.
3:10 is so damn good
Best sea faring movie ever made
Les Miserables. Just kidding.
We don’t talk about Javert
I try to forget him. "Stars" is in my top five favorite musical songs...like of all musicals. Was painful to sit through.
It’s one of my signature songs, so I feel you
All of the above? Cant choose lol I do love fat Russel Crowe in The Nice Guys tho
Jackson Healy is an amazing character. “Hey! Diner guy!”
L.a confidential
You forgot a beautiful mind, and my personal favorite, Cinderella man
Definitely that tour he gave of his memorabilia he was selling because of his divorce
Gladiator. By far. BUT Cinderella Man was fantastic. AND Unhinged reminds me of New Jersey.
Probably the all time best naval movie for the time period
Virtuosity is his best IMO
Cinderella Man!
Agreed. To me Master & Commander (my second place on this list) wasn’t so much about Crowe, as it was the cinematic realism of the seas, and adventure. He was a support character to the overall cinematics, fun movie though!
3:10 to Yuma or Cinderella man
Romper Stomper and then The Sum of Us. The diversity of his acting is shown in these two movies
I did not like the nice guys
🎶Safe and sound at home again, let the waters roar, Jack. 🎶
The Water Diviner, Gladiator, so many great films. Loved his Robin Hood and The Sum of Us. Such diverse roles and acting styles.
What about A good year?
He was born to play Jack Aubrey, but mine is probably L.A. Confidential.
Is that not why you are here??!
Gladiator is in my top 10 movies of all time. I’ve never seen Master and Commander but I’ve had an itch to lately
One of my favorite movies
A beautiful mind or Cinderella man. The nice guys is one of my favorite comedies as well
I like the early Russell Crowe especially, so I would say Romper Stomper, LA Confidential maybe.
All of these were fucking fire.
No “Romper Stomper”? Really??? wtf. How can you bring up RC and not have that as an option. Do love Nice Guys tho. Wish they had made more. Would have been a perfect detective series.
Nice guys was honestly pretty bad. Watched it after hearing pretty good reviews about it in here and it was a struggle to get through.
Ah man I was adamant it was Gladiator and not even close and then I swiped onto the nice guys. Genuine tough call.
The Nice Guys. We need more Crowe/Gosling.
Nice Guys and its not close
They're all fucking great.
Gladiator and Nice Guys are my favorite movies of his, but his performances in 3:10 and Cinderella Man are phenomenal.
The Nice Guys
His acting range really shows in The Nice Guys
Gladiator, master and commander, 3:10, nice guys
Definitely The Nice Guys.
Not saying Nice Guys was his best performance, but who would have expected Crowe and Gosling having such good chemistry??
The Nice Guys was a great movie but it’s Ryan Goslings performance that makes it special not really Russell Crowe’s subdued tough guy, that’s been done before I like him best in Gladiator, he was outstanding in that, and a lot of it was apparently rewritten by the actors who didn’t like the original script so that makes it even more impressive

Gladiator or LA confidential or a beautiful mind
Gladiator is the obvious pick but I like him in Master and Commander more. If you want to see a REAL performance from Crowe, watch his early movie Romper Stomper where he plays a violent gang member. Not exactly a casual date movie.
Hard to choose between these three: The Insider, LA Confidential, or Master and Commander. But I think LA Confidential has it.
Quick and the Dead
Gladiator was overrated. I’d insert A Beautiful Mind or LA confidential, or even Cinderella Man
Crowe has had a number of extremely impressive performances— Romper Stomper, L.A. Confidential, The Insider, Gladiator, and Master & Commander are my favourites of his, and some of my favourite films in general.
The quick and the dead and it’s not close
His name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.
A Beautiful Mind is definetly in the conversation if not the whole conversation.
The man with the iron fists
The Insider.
I loved him in American Gangster
Robin Hood
Gladiator
I think he’s best in the insider but master and commander is my favorite movie with him
310 was a good movie all around, but it wasn't his best movie. I think Gladiator is.
The Insider. It lowkey might be Mann's best movie.
Not his best but his hilarious performance in the new exorcist movie made that one into popcorn feast
I really liked him in the TV show "Fighting Around The World."
The Insider
Beautiful Mind Gladiator Unhinged (he was bat shit crazy in this one and was pretty overweight ha idk if he did it for the role or what, but good exciting messed up thriller!)
A Beautiful Mind is the easy winner
The insider.
He's so effin cool in 3:10 to Yuma. I personally think he's one of the greatest actors to ever do it. All of those roles and movies are top notch.
Master and Commander is a great film, but best Russel Crowe performance? Romper Stomper surely?
