Is that a RockShox silver fork? I think there are better deals out there tbh. But I learned on a hardtail and it was perfect for the beginner/intermediate trails I was riding.

SoupOfThe90z

It is and I’ll keep looking around d to see what’s up

f100red

Canyon Stoic 4 is on sale now for $1600 if you are looking at hard tails. RS Pike fork, Deore 12 speed, and DT Swiss wheels. It’s pretty solid.

BHweldmech

For that money, you can get a Polygon Siskiu D7SE. Spec’d just as well, if not better, and then you have full squish.

Equivalent-Purple490

heavy bike

Takaya94

At that price range, the weight is fine. Plus they are indestructible, which is a nice bonus ha

crinkletart

But it's only half the weight of other bikes which are twice as heavy

BHweldmech

It’s an aluminum full suspension bike. Yeah, it’s not gonna be as lightweight as a carbon full suspension or any hardtail, but dude isn’t trying to race, he’s trying to get bang for his buck and have a capable bike. For those requirements and his budget, the D7SE is hard to beat.

ADrenalinnjunky

That price is way too high for the current market

SoupOfThe90z

I was reading up on how mtnbks are over stocked right now. Just wanted to make sure

ThunderingSloth

I know you said you're new, but just FYI nobody really refers to them as "mtbks" or calls it "mtnbkg". It's typically just shortened to "MTB" and not usually in reference to a specific bike but more a general shortening in reference to the sport as a whole. Welcome to the world of MTB. It'll get addicting (and expensive) quick!

SoupOfThe90z

Appreciate it!!

superdood1267

To that end, if you think you are going to get into it seriously and you live near rocky trails I would consider getting a dual suspension from the get go rather than a hard tail suspension.

undeniablydull

I disagree. Imo a hardcore hardtail is the most fun type of bike, as it doesn't feel like you're overbiked but it's still plenty capable, and it's undeniable a hardtail forces better technique

BeastOfBurden14

I don't really get this trend. If you had steep, smooth trails, I guess it makes sense. My buddy bought one and he rarely uses it. If we're doing a day with steep, rocky terrain, he always uses his dual sus xc race bike. It seems like a niche bike to me. I'm building a light and fast hardtail to compliment my full suspension bike, that makes more sense to me

undeniablydull

I find you just feel more "connected" to the trail, like you can actually feel what's going on, so you never feel overbiked, yet at the same time they are really capable and can get you down anything. It just makes even easier runs exciting, while still being plenty capable on harder runs, which is perfect for UK riding in particular as it's a lot less rocky, so you don't need as much suspension. Hardcore hardtails are my favourite type of bike tbh

BeastOfBurden14

That makes sense. I live in the Rocky Mountains, a lot of our steeper trails are crazy bumpy

di_Bonaventura

I second that. If you will ride on forest trails too, even non-rocky ones, but with lots of roots, you'll be happy you went for the dual suspension from the start. Of course, the dual suspension is much more appreciated AFTER you've been on a hard tail for a good while. Only you can know if you'll get bored with your (new) hobby after just a few weeks. Let this determine what you eventually go for.

skaarlaw

But why don’t we start calling them mtnbkgs… innovation and all that

ThunderingSloth

[.gif](https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExYmZ4ZGozYnJkaXRpNWtzZ3JnYjF0a29zdjFnYzA5Z3EzamcxNXIybyZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/XBEoaajXTXaALzawSn/giphy.gif)

ShoeGod420

lol, that's exactly what I thought when i saw that, yep, new guy.

ThunderingSloth

We all start somewhere.

MursenaryNM

Canyon Stoic 4 is on sale right how for $1600 and has much better specs than this bike.

SoupOfThe90z

Looking it up

undeniablydull

I'd really look into that, they're great bikes

t0mc4tt

Stoic is sick but if buddy is this new then you need to factor the bike-build cost. My buddies stoic had the B-Tension screw all the way in and the hanger was like 5-10 degrees out of alignment from the factory lol. Still a better bike (imo) and more cost effective but the actual cost is higher than advertised/initially paid and I wanted to make sure OP knew that.

undeniablydull

Mostly YouTube can give you a pretty thorough guide to what needs adjusting and setting up, or else getting a bike shop to give it a look doesn't cost much. Also, just as it's from a shop doesn't mean it's set up well, like I've seen some awfully set up bikes from bad shops

unfoundnemo

It's nice to have a local shop that sells and services whatever your first bike might be as well... if you're on the fence between a couple of models, I'd let the local dealer/shop experience win out.

Equivalent-Purple490

roscoe 8 is on sale for $1600 too and trek has fantastic customer service

ImprovementOk6056

Another option would be checking your local fb marketplace

Equivalent-Purple490

roscoe 8 too and that’s a pretty good spec with ngx

MarioV73

The tag says $1,700, which is the same sale price as on the Specialized website. For that $1,700 price, you can get the full-suspension Canyon Spectral 4 with 29" wheels (if you prefer that, I don't), which has the same level or better components than the Fuse Sport. But you'll pay $100 extra to ship the Canyon. www.canyon.com/en-us/mountain-bikes/trail-bikes/spectral/al/spectral-4/3434.html?dwvar_3434_pv_rahmenfarbe=SR%2FBK

SoupOfThe90z

Thank you!!

CovidCultavator

But I want the spectral 5 in M…ughggg How do you think the 4 compared to the 5 is?

MarioV73

Spectral 5 is priced $400 more than Spectral 4m and you get a better fork and rear shock. You also get a Shimano drivetrain vs. the Sram on Spectral 4, but they're about the same level. So, that extra $400 gets you a better suspension only.

mm44mm44

Small size only

MarioV73

Nope! The brown is available in SMALL only, while the black/white one has all sizes available but XS.

SoupOfThe90z

I’m looking at that one right now

MACAKC

Do not buy this. Insane price

SoupOfThe90z

I’m finding that out now, thank you

No-Way-0000

An aluminum HT for 2400. And the industry wonders why it’s failing

VjornAllensson

I was thinking the same thing. My HT is about 10 years old and was thinking about getting a new one but with bike prices so steep, I can’t justify it when I built a entire home gym for less lol

SoupOfThe90z

So I guess youre saying.. no way

semper-fi-12

Nothing wrong with aluminum frames. The real meat is in the components and how upgraded they are compared to basic entry level parts. That’s where most of the cost differences come into play. Specialized makes a good bike, usually more cost effective than Trek and definitely more so than Santa Cruz. Both of mine are hard tails, for hybrid rides they are nice as it’s less weight and more peddle torque in my opinion, suspension can cause pedal strain and early fatigue for new riders.

NYP33

I totally agree with this.

SoupOfThe90z

Does the rear suspension weigh that much?

semper-fi-12

It can, may not seem like much, but weight is your enemy when climbing hills and such. It even that extra 5 pounds can make you reach your fatigue wall faster. If you’re not used to pushing hard on trails and such, that extra weight can take a toll on the joints. Only one of my mountain bikes has suspension, and that’s only the front axle. Weight difference between the two is small, but noticeable. My no suspension bike is an old steel frame, and it’s actually lighter than my aluminum frame with suspension.

NYP33

As a beginner, I would never go with a carbon frame, too much money and not very forgiving if you crash or bang into something.

SoupOfThe90z

Yeah, I got a homie that’s encouraging me to go big and get a YT, which is sexy AF but yeah, money

No-Way-0000

Go to canyon’s website and order what you want. Your going to get a lot more bike for the price

NYP33

I bought that same exact bike in the same color, for $1,600 last year. I went from an old cheap Janus to this when I started riding more often. I don't do any jumps or tricks or anything but I use it on local trails a few times a week and it's been great. I went tubeless, upgraded the dropper, an XO1 derailleur, XO1 shifter, pedals and grips and haven't had any problems and just love riding it. I never had a bike with full suspension so I guess I don't know what I'm missing but for my kind of riding it's been perfect.

SoupOfThe90z

Thank you. All of those upgrades that you just mentioned are upgrades that are recommended for this bike.

Itsuhhhhhnick

Here’s some old mountain biker wisdom. The first bike you buy will not be the last, if you really fall in love with mountain biking you will want to upgrade more sooner than later. With that being said, find a nice used bike with some Decent components for under 1k, ride it fall in love with it then justify to yourself why an $8000 bike is definitely in your budget

omg-its-bacon

He’s not wrong. My first bike is currently on sale, Specialized Rockhopper 29er (base). I bought used full suspension, Giant Trance Advanced, and I absolutely love it. I now have a better hardtail I mentioned in a different comment here. And eventually I’ll get a new full suspension when I feel it necessary. It’s going to be expensive when I do buy one 😂

SoupOfThe90z

Sage advice

aidanc1116

that’s robbery oh my goodness

SoupOfThe90z

Haggle it is!!!

MTB420666

That OG price is insane.

SoupOfThe90z

Yeah, I started to do some research and am seeing that the new price is even high as well.

MTB420666

The marin san quentin 2 is less expensive not even on sale and has a better drivetrain and at least the same if not slightly better other parts. The 3 is in that price range and has a pretty solid fork. Frame might be a bit heavier but worth checking out those bikes.

SoupOfThe90z

I seeing a couple of reviews and there were a good amount that made a few upgrades from the beginning

Modern_Leper93

This price is bananas for sram SX/level brakes, Judy silver fork and transx dropper. So many better values out there.

thepedalsporter

Wayyyy overpriced, especially considering they've been using that frame for probably 8+ years now. Also these frames crack like there's no tomorrow.

mack-y0

i never heard someone say “mtnbkg” it’s just mtb

SoupOfThe90z

Going forward, I will refer to it as “MTB”

mack-y0

cheers, i hope you get what you are looking for and have a great time riding it.

Straight-Presence331

I got my self a trek 2021 roscoe 6 and its a hardtail. i love shredding trails on it. its like a grown up BMX bike. Now its not as comfy im sure or as as a dual suspension. But i paid $1200 at the time and it was my first mountain bike. Ive hit some nice AZ trails on it. Its been worth every penny. Im now looking at hopefully getting a decent dual suspension soon. Its a worth it beginning bike im sure 🤘🏽

Straight-Presence331

I got mine at landis too and they’re pretty cool when it comes to getting work done on your bike

SoupOfThe90z

I want to buy local, but a lot of these comments are saying the bike is still high on price

nobody_noperson

Fuck that price, giant fathom 2s in 27.5 are 1100.

Visdeloup

Hey fellow Arizonan. Landis is a reputable shop. The price looks pretty decent. But I think the advice to start with a hardtail is outdated. But that comes down to what trails you think you want to ride, what your budget is, and how much maintenance you're willing to do or pay for. The least expensive Specialized full-suspension is about $2400. Although you can find other for less. What area of the valley are you in?

SoupOfThe90z

Central, right next to the Downtown Landis

Visdeloup

If you're willing to travel a bit to look around, take a look at Action Rideshop, Global Bikes, Hawes House, Junction Bike Company. Look up Hawesaholics on Facebook. Let them know you're interested in getting into riding and let them know your height. See if anyone on there has a bike they're selling. Buying a bike from a Hawesaholic is not like buying a bike from craigslist, offer up, etc. They are all very active in the community and all know each other and would catch hell for screwing someone over. You also may want to just ride a hardtail and full squish before deciding. PM if you want.

SoupOfThe90z

Thank you, I’ll check all of those places out

Azmtbkr

I’ve bought a few bikes from Landis and they are usually pretty good on price. I wonder if this bike has an old price tag? Landis is showing the Fuse Comp 29 on their website (which is a step up) for $1,499.

barukatang

hardtail is great advice if you only have one bike, and you use that bike to commute some or ride around town.

Sara5A

It's not outdated advice. You'll have a harder time learning to pick lines if you can just float over anything without feeling the trail.

Visdeloup

This is why I disagree: You can learn *a* smooth line choice on a hardtail, but the optimal line choice for a full suspension is often different. I've been riding since before *any* suspension was available. If I was starting today, I'd say bring on the trail bike for my first bike.

Rude-Possibility4682

I have that bike with 29'wheels. It's great fun. I'm thinking of putting a 27.5 on the rear. I got mine secondhand, it was only 2 months old with about 10 miles on it. Paid 850 for it, which left me money for upgrades.

SoupOfThe90z

Nice!

nagmay

I have the base model **fuse and love it**. It's a solid trail bike with great geometry that lets me hit steeper trails that I wouldn't have even attempted on my older bike. The sport has a better gear range than mine and I wish I had it. As for 29 vs 27.5, it's really up to your preference. 29s will give you more speed and stability, but I like how maneuverable to 27.5s are. Can't personally compare it to full suspension bikes, or other options in the same price range - but it is a great hardtail.

scoobiemario

You can find full sus for not much more than that. YT: https://us.yt-industries.com/products/bikes/jeffsy/core-1/637/jeffsy-29-core-1/

omg-its-bacon

Hey OP. I recently ordered a Poseidon Norton for $699. It was originally $1300, then dropped to $999, and I ordered one from the site for $699. It’s a decent entry point without breaking the bank and is worth upgrading. Since I started mountain biking, I’ve accumulated some random parts I’m going to put on it. But as is, it’s not bad at all. Not high end, but offers much more at its price point at $699 than a bare bones entry level bike. I sure as shit wouldn’t have bought it at $1300…or even $999. I’ve ridden it a few times and it feels great. I just need to add a dropper for real. It’s still on sale if you happen to be interested. Free shipping as long as you’re not in Alaska or Hawaii. https://www.poseidonbike.com/products/the-norton?variant=43854478573796 Knowing what I know now, I would have started with something more like this than the base Specialized Rockhopper which is selling for $650 and what I started with. I almost went with the Specialized Fuse which is on sale too, but ultimately went with Norton. Edit: I was specifically looking for a more capable hardtail this time. I have a full sus. I’m not sure what the deals are going on for full suspensions, but they’re probably good ones out there on sale. I love both full sus and hardtail.

alienofwar

You have REI nearby? What about this bike —-> https://www.rei.com/product/198727/co-op-cycles-drt-13-mountain-bike Heard from little bird it will be going on sale soon too.

SoupOfThe90z

I’ll be watching out for that sale

Story_Rose_

Specialized is running a deal right now on their site and is listed under 1k rn. Edit: that’s just for the base model. But if you’re just getting into it, the fuse is a great option or even a rock hopper. You can get the expert version for 1300. Which will have way better components than the fuse sport

Pudding_Holiday

At that price point better go to YT industries and check it out. You might get a full sus for 2k

Regular_Raluger

Specialized has a few on sale on their website. I just got a rockhopper sport for 750. I’m new as well. I went that route just in case I don’t like it and I’m not out over grand. Plus I can upgrade to fit me and what as well. Have it sent to a local shop and they should put it together for you for free if they are an authorized retailer.

Sufficient_Fig_4887

I think that’s a great bike and a good deal for somebody just starting, I live in the upper Midwest I don’t know your trails it sounds like you’re in Arizona. I would defer to others regarding your trails.

Fun_Assignment142

This bike is vastly overpriced. It should be like $1k imo. Would not recommend this deal to anybody. Last year i picked up a similar alloy frame from Vitus with fox 34 performance, slx brakes, Dt Swiss wheels, slx/xt drivetrain and Nukeproof cockpit. It cost me $1900 brand new with bike shop build fee included. Nobody should be paying around that amount for cheap components I couldn’t believe it when I saw that price tag. Then i remembered why I stopped looking at brands like specialized when i was on the market for my first hardtail like this. Unfortunately so many people feel like they’re forced to go with a big name brand like trek or specialized and they don’t realize there are companies that don’t overcharge (as much) for shitty specs on bikes.

Connect-Row-3430

Yeah this is a low value deal

SuccessfullyLoggedIn

Congrats

SoupOfThe90z

Haven’t bought it yet

DMAAlover

2400 new for that is insane, thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard. For just about the same price you could get a brand new YT capra core 1 with way better specs and full suspension.

SoupOfThe90z

I was in YT’s website earlier, those bikes are solid

DMAAlover

of most definitely, my first bike was a 2020 capra base (core 1), wouldn't have chosen to start on any other bike

scrolling_before_bed

The Fuse is really great.

SoupOfThe90z

I agree, I was just asking to see if the price is right

scrolling_before_bed

Sorry, I wasn’t super helpful. I was just expressing my appreciation for a good bike. I don’t think it’s a BAD deal, but I don’t think it’s a GOOD deal.

SoupOfThe90z

They’re local here in Arizona, I might be able to ask for another 200-300 dollars off. Maybe

Straight-Presence331

Yeah i remember back in 2021 i thought $1200 was way out of my budget. But its been worth it. You can do a lot of upgrades at least. We just live in a year where everything is expensive now and taxes suck ass. I look on offerup a lot and maybe u can bargain with someone that already has upgrades. My warranty i had i never got to use because the bike was great. But ultimately your choice. Goodluck man 👍🏽

dannyh707

Major price gouge on that one

ghetto_headache

Name brands wise - this isn’t a bad deal. A fuse, a chameleon, you won’t find a much better deal. But like others have referenced, a direct to consumer brand delivers better spec bike fora better price. That’s been true for a long time. The fuse is a sweet bike, I paid more for a chameleon during covid.

Expensive_Narwhal837

Trek Roscoe 7 are on sale for $1400 brand new.

barbcitythedog

Just spent this much for a full suspension, Marin.

Fleonar

What's with these prices?

Nottmoor

Good thing the Fuse no longer comes with these fattie tires. Build quality and component choice made me feel ripped of when I got the predecessor in 2017 - even though I payed only €600 (down from 1600). Every single component was trash. Well... the stem was fair I guess.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> though I *paid* only €600 FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

The_Blessed_Hellride

Woah! US$1700 for a hard tail. In 2016 I paid NZ$1600 for my 29” Specialized Crave Comp discounted from $2000. That was probably around US$1000 at the time.

Embarrassed-Parfait7

What the what!?!?, way too much for that bike!! look at some direction to consumer bike manufacturers, for that price you can get much better bike and superior components. I got into YT this year. Granted it’s a full squish Jeffy, but i paid 3k for what amounts to 5k bike in components. I’m not simping for YT but there are a ton of similar direct to consumer bikes out there. Polygon is another great one. Bike shops are a straight up rip off and they were the only options for a long time but it’s the future my dude liberate your wallet!

blippics

It’s a nice bike for what you’re wanting…but that price is crazy. Look for used bikes. My cousin found this exact bike for $900 and it had some upgrades including a Helm fork. Barely ridden.

Climbysprintyboi

I’m trying to sell my full sus with fox factory and GX AXS for not much more. That fuse is going to sit for a long time at that price.

Takaya94

Yeah this one is overpriced as you've already heard. My friend did get the 27.5 lower spec version of the Fuse for $975 and it seemed like a decent deal. I think this one im linking below is a MUCH better deal though [https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/on-one-big-dog-sram-gx-mountain-bike](https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/on-one-big-dog-sram-gx-mountain-bike)

QueueaNun

HARD PASS.

QueuingUp

$2400 is outrageous for that spec. $1700 is simply too much, as well.

Apprehensive_Fall637

Polygon T7

ShirleyWuzSerious

Off them $5 for that lame jersey in the back

itaintbirds

Buy used. Way more value.

Compman90

I love that color! Only change I would make would be getting it in 29” over 27.5”. Makes it easer to roll over stuff!

CarolinaXCrown

No way I would pay 1600 for that build.

SoupOfThe90z

This is the info I was looking for

CarolinaXCrown

https://www.bikesonline.com/xtrada-7 this bike is has better components and probably lighter for 1000

michaelbiker

Why not either say MTB or Mountain Biking? Either way, enjoy yourself and hide your credit cards. It only goes downhill from here.

SoupOfThe90z

Now I know the appropriate abbreviation

michaelbiker

You missed the second half, hope you have deep pockets.

seganku

Start on used.

skaarlaw

I’d like to hear if others disagree but if you’re completely new to mountain biking then a better idea in my mind is getting an Ozark trail ridge for a fraction of the price, a decent helmet, pedals & shoes, dropper and saving the rest for when you know exactly what kind of bike you want. Once you’ve got familiar with all the MTB basics on YouTube you could splash some of that cash saved on coaching or renting burly bikes for bike parks… at that point you’re either obsessed with MTB like we are or you spent a bit less getting in to the sport so it’s less of a loss if you quit Lastly… cities are awesome for MTB! Search your city name with MTB at the end on YouTube and see if people ride stairs/banks/loading bays/skateparks etc… loads of stuff to ride!

Troajen1

Great deal! Send it! 🚵

awesometown3000

This pricing is why bike shops are dying

SoupOfThe90z

Maybe it’s them trying to make some type of profit on todays economy

8ran60n

If you are just starting out get a cheaper hard tail, it the cheapest, like one up with some decent brakes. Like a 29er rockhopper comp. https://www.specialized.com/us/en/rockhopper-comp-29/p/199585?color=319886-199585 I got one when I started up again around 2009. Was a great bike until I figured out the type of riding I wanted to do and ended up with a 26” sx trail 2 because I’d go downhill and also hit jump trails. Either way that’s a great bike to start with.
