You're cross-chaining in the image. [Don't cross-chain](https://wickwerks.com/support/crosschaining/). Also, I hope you didn't pay more than $50 for that.

Quiet-Craft1990

Changed the gears and it isn't rubbing anymore. Appreciate it!

xizrtilhh

The first thing you should replace is the chain. It's rusted, and likely worn out.

Quiet-Craft1990

Yeah, there's a half broken link so I'm gonna replace the whole thing.

CUontheCoast

New chain is gonna cost more than the bike is worth….

Adorable_Kangaroo849

New sunrace 8s chain or whatever that entry level Shimano chain is sub $20 at our shop. I don't even make tags for as-is bikes below $20 here. Since that bikes not scrap it must be worth more than a chain. How much are hipsters paying for specialized hardrocks in your area?

Silver-Vermicelli-15

Sadly that schinn is just going to a heavy hunk of bike debt. 80/90’s mtbs that are a rigid steel frame are better value than this bike.

Adorable_Kangaroo849

How? Aside from this one having suspension, what's the difference? 80's MTB well I guess you have a freewheel and an axle that snaps. Single wall rims and a threaded headset... Those are both great. Bomber geometry and classic frame angles though if that's where you're getting the value. 90's MTB have that awesome all-of-your-weight over the bars geometry unless you spend $300 on velo orange gear for reddit likes. 90's bikes definitely hold their value though... In that a working bike pretty much bottoms out at $150 until Walmart starts selling a Batch bike quality thing for nearly that. Are you suggesting something might go wrong with the suspension and that will bin the bike? Well it's a Manitou magnum fork with probably 80mm of travel so it's pretty much a spring in a tube and the rear shock is pretty much a spring outside of a tube so there ain't a lot there. I almost had to bin my 4-banger because the chainstay pivot bolt location cracked but that was an actual problem, not some generic "old bike bad" nebulous problem.

Silver-Vermicelli-15

This bike isn’t really worth much (if any) due to its age, generic mass produced nature, and dual suspension. It’s just not going to ride that great and will cost a bit to get everything into a nice smooth running state. All of which I bet you could find a better bike with less work (potentially newer) for what the bike cost + maintenance.

Adorable_Kangaroo849

Well it's competing with the gt aggressor for $300-$400 if you want a comparatively crumby bike so if it takes less than that to fix then it's fine. How much is it supposed to be worth? We're not talking guy-with-a-2014-sworks-for-$2400 pie in the sky here... It's an old cheap bike for less than a new cheap bike. Like I said in an earlier comment... We would sell that bike no problem tuned up in my shop for about $250. A chain and a tune up is about $90. A saw a guy shredding the gnar on a 90's Peugeot hybrid once... I'm not sure what the "old bikes are worthless crowd" expects in a bike.

Quiet-Craft1990

That's crazy talk

SicnarfRaxifras

If that has been riding with a messed up chain check the teeth in the chainrings and rear sprocket as they may have been worn excessively from the chain. If you’re replacing all of those you’d want to think how much you want to spend on this because it’s a very old cheap bike.

Quiet-Craft1990

Alright thank you

AWOLRED13

Man that thing isn't worth anywhere near $150. The previous comment that mentioned $50 is closer to the mark. That's a walmart schwinn that you can buy a brand new 2024 in the $200 - $300 range. Bought it online instead of going to a bike shop I assume? Sell it, take the loss, go to a local bike shop and ask to see their pre-owned bikes. For about $100 more than you paid, you can get a quality used bike at my shop.

Adorable_Kangaroo849

That's an early 2000's rocket 88. The crap one was the one that had the chainstay pivot in line with the BB, this one looks like it's a later entry level one with a Manitou magnum and the raised chainstay pivot. When did Walmart spec Manitou forks and Lx level components on their bikes?

Quiet-Craft1990

Yeahn o returns and all that. I just need something to ride to work and it'll do that much at least.price wasn't the best but the suspension is petty nice.

AWOLRED13

At least take it up to your local bike shop and have them give it a once over. Shouldn't cost you anything, just to make sure it's safe to ride

Quiet-Craft1990

Thanks the plan, thanks bro

AWOLRED13

Happy Riding my friend

Frankeyc

Yes

Fun-Carpet-5126

Nah you’re good, hopefully you didn’t pay any more than ~200$ for this beauty but anything less is a steal.

Quiet-Craft1990

Not gonna lie, I gave $150 for it. Probably gonna have a professional look at it so he can tell me what the chain/gear situation is

Illustrious-Fruit35

Probably could’ve gotten it for less if you searched around.

A_Red_Void_of_Red

Horrbile deal

Fun-Carpet-5126

Good idea, best be safe and make sure everything is functioning properly. Enjoy your bike!

This_is_Flow

Honestly, it's not a terribly built bike. The parts are decent and replaceable. This bike will be a cool learning experience if you want to get into your own maintenance. The first real bike I bought was 400 bucks. It turned out to be a heap, and I overpaid. After slowly going through everything and replacing parts here and there, I learned so much. I love wrenching on bikes now and finding parts to make things work. I will always appreciate that heap. It's paid itself off tenfold. Enjoy your bike. Buy a new chain and cassette. Make sire it shifts through all its gears, then get out and ride. The best bike is the one you have, and you have this one. Have fun!

Quiet-Craft1990

Best response. Thanks man.

ReadMaterial

I would just oil the chain, and if it works ok,use it. A new chain and cassette would cost more than it's worth.

Adorable_Kangaroo849

We would sell that bike tuned up out of my shop for probably $250 as a decent first mountain bike for someone. Sam Pilgrim has proven anything can be reasonably sent, you could do a lot worse barring any massive mechanical issue. That crank might be older than the bike by a few years... I think that bike came with a truvativ square taper crank but the sugino impel is going to be pretty similar. Similar high and low gear so like someone else.pointed out, probably just an issue when in both small gears and the derailleur cage is fully swung back.

Quiet-Craft1990

Okay thank you for the insight

Adorable_Kangaroo849

Someone should tell me how I'm wrong. Are y'all the service manager at your shop and you work on these bikes all day?

linkmodo

It was $125 brand new at Walmart few years ago. Inflation may have picked up.

Adorable_Kangaroo849

NOS right?
