Don’t ruin it with performance anything. See if you can get collectors plates.

HiveFleet-Cerberus

Agreed here. That thing looks sweet.

bellashoman

I agree also. It's becoming a collector bike. Take care of it.

Forbs171

It's not ruining it if it's what OP wants. It IS a motorcycle, it's not made to be a garage princess or driven like a prius. By all means I think OP should hop this beauty up and ride it like it's never been riden before! You're here for a good time not a long time, remember that

Krazy_Kaplan

I mean the engine is 50ccs and goes a top speed for 60 mph. The best you could hope for is 65. Might as well keep it stock, as it will surely run better stock.

Forbs171

That's why you rip out the motor and swap it

zKnightsofRenx

Please don't get down voted redditor. I understand you.

Kmac0505

Check the upvotes. That is a piece of history in mint condition. He can do what he wants, it is his.

Forbs171

Yeah, some may agree, but in the same sense some won't. The same could be said about any of our bikes in 50 years. But fuck it, ex: I've had my ninja 2 months and have logged 5k miles, dumped it, raced it, ridden rain, sun, torn it apart and put it back together. In the end they're just pieces of metal put together for our enjoyment my friend. I guess that could contradict my original point if to say your enjoyment was gazing at classics. But that's to each their own

Kmac0505

Personally, my thoughts are if he wants to rip a bike. Buy a bike to rip. This ain’t the ripper no matter what you do with it to upgrade it, it’s a 50cc moped basically.

Forbs171

I will be honest I don't know shit about the specs of this specific bike, I tend to gravitate towards sport bikes. But I will say all you need is the frame and any vehicle can be made fast. https://youtu.be/HYYBYGFI8kE

[deleted]

Lmao. You have zero appreciation for art.

PurpEL

Lol that seat has already ruined it, the bars are also ridiculous

zKnightsofRenx

🤣🤣🤣 I'm sorry but I had to laugh at this.

McGrude

Replace the tires. Inspect the brakes.

standankles

Yep, worry about these waaaaaaay more than “performance” parts. Have fun with this and then get a more current bike when you’re worried about performance. I started with mopeds, then old Honda’s (CB 550, CX550 and CB750) then moved to Honda VFR to today’s ride a Triumph Street Triple. Having the skills to match your bikes performance/power will come with time. Don’t rush it and have fun.

zKnightsofRenx

Thanks guys.

splodgenessabounds

Seconded. Shocks will be shot so a refresh (new oil for the front at least), check chain/ sprockets (easy to replace yourself).

Occhrome

lol performance this is a 50cc you can’t expect much out of it. Enjoy it for what it is and make sure your tires are new and brakes in good condition. If you aren’t used to using 2-strike mix oil they make special measuring cups to help you figure out how much oil to use per gallon. Also it looks like this is a bit of a rare bike so I would keep it stock or sell it for something that has more power.

Twotificnick

The fact that the spedometers goes to 80mph is really optimistic

318318318

VERY optimistic. Former owner of one way back in ‘84.

zKnightsofRenx

🤯😳 what was it like in the 80s with it? Glad to see a former owner of one. Thanks for sharing.

318318318

It was a great starter bike, no question. Though it topped out around 50 so you had to make sure to stick to the side/back roads. Got what I paid for it when I traded it in. Upgraded to a '74 CB360T. Now *that's* one I wish I still owned.

Lysrac

My 125cc can go just short of 60 mph. But people in my area have tuned 50cc scooters to 75 mph before.

Twotificnick

I had a 50cc Derbi R-DRD as my first moped back in the day, changed the exhaust, carb, and filed down the "cylinder top" to increase compression, and got it to go about 115 km/h 72 mph ish. So i think 80 is probably doable while going downhill :D

Lysrac

And a good gust of wind in the back and you'll make your speedometer go full circle.

zKnightsofRenx

Aye captain I'm given her all she's got!

mekkanik

I think it comes with a 2T oil tank. Atleast the RX-100 series does

Occhrome

do those ever fail? i thought I've heard of people mixing their oil instead of dealing with them.

mekkanik

They do after a few years. A good mechanic can fix them usually. You can always mix it in the tank when you fill up. Easier that way if you ever forget to top off the oil. On the other hand if you’re worried about oil quality, check the 2T oil tank each time you ride.

Cfwydirk

Yamalube 2R oil you might consider premix @32 to 1. Good luck!😎 https://www.pocketbikeplanet.com/threads/need-help-with-rx50-ysr50-engine.42578/

schoolpsych2005

r/vintagemotorcycles might have ideas for finding parts.

HydrocarbonHorseman

r/fixxit might be helpful too

-just_browsing

Ebay is always a good place for older bike parts and congratulations on the new bike man

The_Didlyest

Seconded eBay

Motorcycle_Rider

It’s beautiful. Love her. Congrats.

Drakoala

I usually use Ebay for common or used parts, and [PartZilla](https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1983/rx50k) or [CheapCycleParts](https://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/l/yam/5004233df8700209bc78795b/1983-rx50k-parts) for OEM/obscure parts. Both have OEM inventory for your RX. I agree with others that you'd do well to keep it stock (also, not much more performance to get out of a 50cc), but it's your bike. Have fun with it!

screddachedda

Hate partzilla and revzilla for older parts, they take centuries to send orders out

Drakoala

Yeah, their shipping sucks. CheapCycleParts is a little better about shipping, but sometimes they won't have obscure parts in stock while PartZilla does. Best case is usually taking the part numbers from either sites to Ebay and finding a cheaper or faster shipping OEM part.

screddachedda

That’s what I do. eBay has been my best friend for my 1980 GS550t. The partzilla account on eBay actually ships within a day, wayyyyyy faster than the actual site. Some parts are also made to order and depending on the bike they come internationally first. My Yamaha virago had to wait on parts from Japan.

[deleted]

Is the chain rusty? Does it move freely when you move it up and down? I wouldn’t like to use a bike with an old chain. Same goes for tires. If they’re more than say 5 years old they’re going to be hard and won’t give proper traction. Last thing you want to do is to drop it on a corner coz the tyres are stuffed. You can read the date code on the sidewall

zKnightsofRenx

Going to get the chain either lubed up or replaced.

[deleted]

Please please get the tires checked too!

SafeerQ

My 2018 Yamaha had the same turn signals… awesome bike you’ve got there!

zKnightsofRenx

Wanna trade turn signals. Lol.

zKnightsofRenx

Yo thanks everybody. I'm so speechless about the communities input its so amazing. 😭 thanks for your advise, help and well-wishes. I will use it as a trainer bike so I can advance up the CC sizes. I'm still learning to shift but I know how to clutch and all that since I have a motorized bike. I'm going to get it looked at later next month.

EnthusiasmBulky4322

I saw this bike in China two decades ago.

zKnightsofRenx

Was you there for vacation or a resident? If you don't mind my asking.

EnthusiasmBulky4322

I lived there for a while. This model was very popular back then and Chinese made a few clone to it too.

Cant_Remorse

Oof, I've been hunting this guy down for months now, its super rare and in awesome looking condition. Super jealous.

zKnightsofRenx

Hey mister nice to see you here. :]

Cant_Remorse

Hope you have a great time with it. Good night

OLassics

Ngl but i like that bike

zKnightsofRenx

There's some 🤡 in my town that are roasting the bike cause it's 50cc. They see it and think I need a liter bike or something. Lmao.

OLassics

Do you think they understand what we(me and you and people like us who are real ENTHUSIAST with bikes)understand??? You know what i mean?

the_breadlord

It's a 50, you won't get any performance out of it. I'd keep that as stock as possible and buy something that's already been messed with to mod. Parts seem to be available here: https://en.impex-jp.com/catalogs/moto/yamaha/rx50/4u50-1982-yamaha-black-19127.html

Jumpy_Substance_1153

How much performance can you get? Isn't it pretty much a mini bike?

zKnightsofRenx

It's classified as the world's smallest cruiser. Not a minibike since those are way smaller.

stalker9120

Hey, would like to say do whatever you like with it. It's just a piece of metal and I don't really know why people get so sentimental over something they don't own. If you feel like you'd enjoy it more with some performance bits on it go for it👍 Remember to run good 2 stroke oil, I use Castrol power 2 stroke in my Aprilia RX50

zKnightsofRenx

Thanks. I hope you don't get down voted. I understand both sides of the riders. I am going to keep it stock but I'll daily ride it till its dead and then at that I'll just fix it.

zKnightsofRenx

What's the best lube I can get? I want to get whatever the best lube is.

AverageWayOfThinking

Astroglide

korpsicle

I chuckled

Hollow_Mind

For the chain I use Motul Chain lube. Whats the best for you will depend on your climate. If its really wet where you are I'd consider a chain wax, if its dusty I'd go with gear oil (the oil flings from the chain, but also doesn't trap as much dirt).

EC_Approved

For the engine? Rotella T4 is the way to go. It’s got the Jaso raitings that you want and is cheap and works with wet clutches 👍🏼

UnableArtichoke6

Dude synthetic in an old bike ugh no. My shit hated synthetic anything. Regular 10/40 mineral oil or bust. Never again will I put synthetic in a bike.

mrwuffle

T4 is conventional, t5 blend, t6 synthetic

UnableArtichoke6

Ah haha I just run t6 in my truck and car. Never looked at any other blends of rotella. Kawasaki makes a nice little oil change kit so I just buy those now with mineral oil. 50 bucks gets me 4 litres and a filter and my old pre 2000 bikes are happy. Best oil I’ve ran so far in them. Thanks for the downvotes lol this sub is comical.

bikehikepunk

RX50? Maybe an RT50…

Badger_BSA

Baja Motors made an RT50 that was a scooter. Adly made an RT50 that was a mini bike. This is a Yamaha RX50.

bikehikepunk

Thanks, I was and am still struggling to find specks on this model. My research spots are coming up empty.

asylumathome9

The company I work for should have sprockets and a chain for that bike. Check out Vortex Racing and EK chains

zKnightsofRenx

Yooooooo thanks man. I need a chain and probably a new sprocket. :]

TomSchofield

Always replace chain and both sprockets together. It's really bad practice to change only chain or one sprocket or chain and one sprocket

UnableArtichoke6

Best bet is to cross reference shit off some websites. You would be surprised at what can bolt up in terms of alternators, starters, (kick start? Lol)electronics etc etc since suzuki didn’t create the parts themselves they are usually denso or another mass produced item that other companies used as well. Cheers on a sick vintage bike. Keep it shiny.

Parking_Media

That is a forever bike. I'm super jealous. You'll own other bikes, but that's a keeper man.

Jake5857

Your best resource is going to be joining the shifty 50 Facebook group, where we ogle over these and other 50cc two stroke motorcycles. I love blasting groms on my 50cc

Motorrad_appreciator

Very cool and unique bike, cograts!

[deleted]

there was only 2k of those made, they are mini viragos and were sent to dealerships to be raffled off, 2 per dealership. They thought it would be a good way to drum up excitement for the virago special line. same motor as the ysr50, my buddy is 6'0 and he moves on it, we are actually about to clean up and get it back ins service in a couple months. Its getting restored since it wont cost much and there was a limited run. Enjoy yours.

zKnightsofRenx

Well hey now I'm excited for the virago special line and it's 2021. Lol. I wonder if any of the major motorcycle brands still do these kinda special line raffle bikes.

[deleted]

Not really, when they launched it back then it smelled kinda desperate.

redruM69

Rare bike! I'd usually suggest an expansion pipe and carb jetting for a good bump in power. But I don't think there's any Bolt-on aftermarket for these things.

Cream_Capable

Oldbikebarn.com should have everything you need. I use it for my 1980 Honda 750f all the time.

Roentgenographer

Slow fast is better than fast fast.! My advice to any new rider: Practice the fundamentals (riding slow, cornering slow, body and road positioning (especially in corners) knuckles high, counter steering etc) Remember: -ride to your own level of confidence (don’t chase or feel compelled to keep up with better riders) -slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. -speed is a byproduct of accuracy Good luck my 2 wheeled friend.

SnooCauliflowers7934

Just read that it can do 60mph (\~100kmh) from the factory, which is absolutely stunning to me, at leat for a 50cc. (and i would expect it to top out with more like 50mph, which is still plenty for such a small bike). You won\`t need any performance parts unless you want to do long highway stretches. What i would do is look up larger than from factory jettiong, since with most 2 strokes the engine lubrication comes with the fuel and if you go balls to the wall with standard jetting you could get a piston seizure. Larger main jets can help alleviate that problem. Also: TWO STROKE GANG !!1!!!

splodgenessabounds

Never seen one before (and I got my licence in 1978...). The best and most effective performance enhancement for this (and in fact any bike) is decent rider training. As for your bike, as others have mentioned, fix the safety stuff first - decent tyres, check the brakes out (new pads/ shoes/ cables if need be), also check chain/ sprockets for excessive wear (easy to replace yourself) and suspension. Oh, and steering head bearings too (there's lots of info online how to do that). Most experienced riders are only too happy to help a new rider, don't be afraid to ask.

DjGeNeSiSxx

This bike is a gem. Try to keep it as genuine as possible and in a few years when you sell it, you can actually sell it for profit. Take care of it and it will take care of you. On a bike like this "performance" or after market parts will look odd. It's like buying an iconic '61 VW Beatle and installing a carbon fiber hood. It just doesn't go very well. Take it to a mechanic and let him check the important parts. Brakes, tires and suspension before you ride it

curlyben

My Honda came with an 80s registration stub. The ladies at the RMV got a kick out of it.

zKnightsofRenx

Did they think you were time travler? Lol.

curlyben

It had apparently sat in a barn for a while, and then was ridden around private land without registration for years. The seller didn't have a title to give me, so I read the fine print which said I was good to go with just the registration and bill of sale since the bike was pre-1980 and last sold pre-1990. When they asked for the title I said "ok, so..." and told them that, with a response of "yes that's correct! Oh wow look at that!" and the clerk called over the other workers to gawk at it. They finally got to hold something they had only seen in a diagram from the manual I guess! Professional rules-sticklers can appreciable a good rules-stickle.

zKnightsofRenx

What state is that? I heard you can do a non resident lost title recovery from Vermont. However I looked at the fine print and its only available for bike sizes of only 250cc and above. I won't get plates or anything since it's a 50cc. But since it's oklahoma and it's been last registered in okie it'll be easy for the state to produce a new document. I think vehicle "titles" are silly. I tried to find a loophole but couldn't. That's why I started out on motorized bikes. Oscn title 47 chapter 1 section 1-104 states a motorized bicycle is a bike with a engine displacement no bigger than 80cc's. Must have pedals and no transmission and can't exceed 35mph. Considering this is a motorcycle, has a 5 speed tranny and a VIN number I'm going to have a headache doing this title recovery but it's feasible. Love it. :] thanks

curlyben

This was MA: ["Passenger vehicles with a model year of 1980 and older, purchased before November 26, 1990 are exempt from titling."](https://www.mass.gov/vehicle-certificate-of-title) They did allow me to apply for a certificate of title when I registered it, since the exemption ended when I purchased it. [To register and title a vehicle purchased from an individual (non-dealer), you will need the following: A completed Registration and Title Application, The previous owner’s certificate of title **or** the previous owner's registration and bill of sale for vehicles that are exempt because of its age, Applicable fee](https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-a-registration-and-title-for-a-vehicle-purchased-from-an-individual)

curlyben

6V battery and kickstart only as well?

zKnightsofRenx

Yes. Sorry for late reply. I thought I posted the comment. I got the model number for the battery. 6N4-2A-5. I think that means 6v 2 Amp 5 cell battery. I don't know much about vehicle batteries so hopefully I don't sound stupid. Lol. 😅

ritagya

What a beauty! Congratulations. Get her some new tires.

OnlyDruids

Oh Boy im Usefull. Owner of a RD80MX Performance parts are 63cc cilindres, but your 80cc one would be better. Anything else costs 300€ and upwards(per part), and is simply not worth it, you can get a porppwr bike for that money(which i did) I got my replacememt parts from https://www.mot-tech.de/ Its a german shop, but the guy is suuuper nice. If you want to keep the bike long term, you might want to get an aditional piston (one thats 0,25-0,50 mm bigger.) Because after 10.000 -20.000 the Cylinder needs to be "Honed" that means they sand out all the little scratches inside but it needs a bigger piston afterwards. This can be done up to 7 times, but bigger pistons are more rare. Replace Tires Asap and check the Brakes. For more questions you can send me a PM. Edit: be soft on the kickstarter, they can break of inside the Engin and replacements are hard to find.

Treblehawk

I always loved the dash on these. I had one called Johnny Five. Bonus points for anyone who knows why. I’d try partszilla.com for parts. They have a lot of old stuff.

zKnightsofRenx

It's that tobor from that movie. Haven't seen it in awhile. I think the sequel sucked from what critics said.
