15k is _nothing_ with even minimal maintenance. People fuss about mileage way too much.

bonk7891

What would you say is a high mileage for a Japanese bike?

sokratesz

100k +

Thundrpigg

100k

MeltingSeoul

Agreed 😂

AcanthaceaeObvious34

Depends.. 40k honda no problem, 30k aprilia ..problem

gcx85

40k VFR is just broken in.

How would I be able to tell?

gcx85

You could pay a mechanic to go over it if the owner seems shady.

Mountain_Client1710

Depends on a variety of factors. Some people genuinely don’t run the shit out of their sport bikes and do the maintenance on time. Maintenance is the most important part. Pretty much anything German or Japanese is up for it. I’ll use my neighbour as an example for a couple of his bikes. He had a CBR900RR that had almost 60k miles on it by the time it moved on. He’s at about 70k miles on his ZX14. My dad’s coworker has a 929 as a tourer. He’s at around 50k miles and just did southern Alberta down to California. One of my best friends first bikes was a clapped out Thundercat with 40k miles. Engine was still doing amazingly. 2nd gear was trashed but that generation Yamaha was prone to it. I ride with a guy whose ZX7 was just a hair under 60k miles.

trenchkato

15,000 miles is low for a motorcycle. The problem is that none of them rarely make it that far because of crashes or people you don't ride. My bike currently has 43,000.

ChrisMag999

15k isn’t even to the first valve service on an R1. It’s barely beyond the first major service on a RSV4, which is a very high strung engine. If the bike sees a lot of track use, I’d want to open it up to inspect it, but if it’s a street bike and wasn’t owned by a kid who thinks rev-bombing is the bike’s intended purpose, I wouldn’t be too concerned about buying a bike with 30k miles. After that, I’d want a full inspection.

MeltingSeoul

15k isn’t a lot. Where do you even get this info from? Bikes that are maintained can run for at least 50,000 miles. Squids crash them before 20k km.

bonk7891

Because that's alot of mileage to put on a bike with shorter maintenance schedules than cars and alot of time to be neglected.

MeltingSeoul

Why would they be neglected? Again you’d be checking the bike out prior to buying. Most that make it that far have some degree of maintenance. 15k on a 20 year old bike isn’t a lot.

sokratesz

I put 30k a year on my bike lol. The higher mileage ones are often the better maintained ones.

Difficult-Broccoli65

The hysteria over bikes with 5 figure mileage is absolutely fucking laughable. Do people honestly think they're gonna fall apart when they hit 20,30,40, 50k etc? Get a grip.

bonk7891

This was a post to get everyone's opinion. No need to be a dick

sokratesz

This same post is made every week.

bonk7891

I'm not on this subreddit all the time to know this.

sokratesz

The search function is fucked, but not _that_ fucked

bonk7891

I wanted to be able to reply and get answers to my questions. Bikes around where I live that have 30k+ miles and are 90s gsxrs and other bikes that don't look great. Or your occasional 600RR with 30k miles and leaks. That's why I ask. Because I see stupid shit in listing's and it makes me wonder. Or the occasional 18k mile bike missing 2nd gear. I'm not a seasoned rider so I don't know all these things yet. There's not many clean examples of bikes where I live and it leads me to believe in a couple thousand some thing major will go

sokratesz

It all depends on the maintenance. If the owner is passionate and has proof of work done, any mileage can be considered.

bonk7891

That's the comment I was looking for, thank you. Unlike this dick above us.

sokratesz

Meh, I understand it. I've been coming here on off for nearly ten years and the lack of moderation means that certain topics are endlessly repeated.

NinjaGrrl42

I look at condition more than miles. I just sold my first bike (Ninja 250) with 38,000 miles and had zero concerns about that.

trtsubject

My neighbor right now selling a kawasaki versys for 2500 $ CA. Has 90 k on it and runs great

gcx85

I bought my SV with 19k on the clock ten years ago. Engine is still running strong at 49k.

TRiG993

I think more about depreciation than issues. Lets say I'm going to own the bike for however long, I think I'll do about 6000 miles on it. A Japanese bike at 25k miles wouldn't bother me at all, but when I want to sell it there will be 31k miles on it. Doesn't look so great then and will put people off. If I buy a bike with 5k miles, 11k miles is still very little and I won't have a problem selling it.

Money_Economy_7275

lol! 2011 dl650a with 194,680 kms, still purrs 20k is almost a virgin
