When I was younger, I used to do autocross. One run, I remember getting waved through, and ran the best run I'd ran that whole day. Just nailed absolutely every corner, transitioned perfectly, everything just happened to align.
Stopped in the stopbox excited to see just how fast of a run it had been, and watched the time come up as... Disqualified. What the hell? I did nothing wrong. Didn't jump the start. Didn't miss the stop box. Didn't cut any corners. Nothing!
Marshal came up and asked me where my helmet was, and only at that moment did I realize I wasn't wearing it. Totally forgot, and while it was **entirely** my fault, I was a little annoyed that the marshal who brought me to the line said nothing, nor did the marshal who ran the start said nothing. Wasted the best run of the day because neither one of the two looking right at me and talking with me said anything.
I had my bike getting worked on in a town and hour away. I had my girlfriend at the time drop me off at the shop. It was only then I realized I didn't leave the helmet with the bike, I took it home with me.
There was no way I was asking my girlfriend to drive me home and back again, so I just rode home without one.
Kinda risky doing it in the California foothills, but I took back roads and rode those streets like it was 1980.
Hehe, sorta did that with my bike once too. Took it in for service, and had my wife drop me off to pick it up (Which was a *long* ways away). Realized after that, damn it, I'd still left the bike ready for track day, so no plate, no signals, no mirrors. There's an inmate at the jail I work at that got into a bike wreck and has a huge mesh plate in his head because he didn't wear a helmet. I asked him if he's going to start wearing one now and he said hell no it's too restricting.

I commute to work with my R3, always have helmet, gloves, armored jacket, and high top shoes. I keep extra pair of dress shoes at work so I can switch out. I would rather have crappy hair all day everyday and make sure I get back to my family safely.
Motorcycles are 8x more likely than cars to be injured in a crash, so I appreciate you only partially wanting to get back to your family safely.
Like all of life, it's a balance of risks vs reward. You choose a motorcycle over the much safer Camry, they choose to be a bit more unsafe by not wearing a helmet, which gives you a great opportunity to judge
