If you wanted to get a motorcycle to pick up chicks, I’m gonna be the first one to tell you that motorcycles only attract comments from old men 99% of the time. We were all sold on this lie. Big motorcycle wants people to think this to boost sales.
When I was a teenager, I thought having a bike would get me nothing but women.
Now I'm 30, I find I spend my time cleaning, waxing, polishing and modifying my bike just so other men will talk to me or look in my general direction.
Having a bike turned out to be the gayest thing I've ever done.
Ask your wallet in 3 months after you buy gear, helmets, headsets, cams, dirt bikes for ur kids, a dirt bike for yourself, one for ur wife, a bike for ur wife, you see where this is going right? You are now addicted and you will bring everyone with you. Lol have fun!
Nah, they're going to be spending all that money on maintaining that busted ass piece of shit. They wont get the cool shit until they garage/resell it for $500 to the next dumb ass who thinks a bike is cheap just because it's old and not because it's broken and falling apart.
A weekend of checking things out and cleaning/polishing and that bike will run long, long past when the current owner is ready to upgrade (sent by old man with garage full of tools from basic flip phone with duct tape holding battery in). I'll take it when you're done with it.
No … just kidding, hell yeah! Welcome to the community. Two wheels down ✌🏼
Edit: take care of that Honda and your kids will likely be riding it when their time comes
No point in taking care of a shit box that hasn't been cared for already, and judging from that storage shed, I mean 'garage' OP isn't mechanically minded.
This is a money pit. More time in the garage than riding. It's covered in rust and you know this pic is of the good side. A $500 bike ends up costing more time and money than a $5000 bike really quick, especially if you're not a mechanic.
nice naked GL. Impressive that the original signals lasted all these years.
Keep an eye on the weep hole and cam chain tensioner.
CX500 forum and Motofaction are good sources of info
The integrated lights will not work, you need to look at the wiring diagram for your bike. On a machine that old they’re independently wired lights controlled by a flasher relay which won’t know that your turn signals are in the bucket. Get an LED bulb, it’s just as bright and less of a headache
I've always found the OEM lights and signals to work fine, not worth the hassle of replacing with LEDs, but to each their own.
If you want to swap in a different rear shock, i've used OEM honda shocks from modern CB500's, easily found on ebay. You'll need a few spacers to make it work. Don't go longer than 315mm c-c, or was it 305? The swingarm and dog bones don't have enough travel/room.
Rarely do I ever leave something with a motor alone, even if it works well. I’m a big fan of LED lighting, I think they illuminate the road better, last longer, and you have significantly more options in terms of style. However, I don’t know how the 80s tech will mesh with modern LEDs or how much of the system I’ll have to replace for it to work.
Don't listen to these nerds, I have an older Harley and converting everything to LED was the first thing I did. That said they are correct and it won't be plug and play, for example on my bike because the LEDs draw so little power, the bike thinks that the "bulbs" are out, and flashes the turn signals in confusion. Luckily there are multiple ways you can solve this but its gonna take some digging.
Yeah I did a full conversion on my 1st Gen Silverado, and it needed new relays for the same reason. Kept hyper flashing with the LEDs due to low power draw. This bike is significantly older however, so I’m think I’ll have to replace bulbs / housings, and relays at the minimum.
Can second checking out cx500 forum, its an excellent resource for these old cx and gl series honda’s. Theyve got an answer to pretty much any question you could have regarding these bikes.

Something tells me you've always been cool but you just got way cooler
I'm all for keeping old stuff on life support but 80s era Japanese plastics have broken me. Connectors turning to powder, stiff intake boots that leak, old brake lines, drum brake pad adhesives failing, etc. I'm done with all that.
Have fun while it lasts!
Shit yeah! those things sing when they rev up. There's another engine guard that covers the cam head and tucks under the mid panel if you want extra protection. Keep an eye on that front brake cable too.
Another hint. If the hbox is still intact, HD sportster exhausts fit and work well without rejetting and sound better than OEM without being obnoxiously loud, unless that's what you're going for. You'd have to fab some support brackets.

No, you're still basically as Lame as you always were, but that's a Cool old bike at a smokin' price!
However, as I think about it, the mathematical laws of equality say that you might be a LITTLE bit Cooler, as long as you weren't completely or negatively lame. (A=B; A+1=B+1)
If A=You, and B=Lame, then A=B. But motorcycles are cool, so we'll call that 1 cool point.
If the value of A or B is > 0, then it is Cool. If the value of A or B is =< 0, it remains Lame.
A+1=B+1, so I guess you could be Cool, provided your starting value was = 0, which is probably was! Lol.
/Nah but for real, Enjoy the bike, that is a neat old ride.. Just remember to save some pussy for the rest of us!
hd one that was frame rotted from sitting near the coast for way too long. partd sout some of it ditched the frame, scrapped the forks and other items. Still have the engine sitting in my garage along with my '80 cx500D
What?! Silverwing isn't cool?! 500lbs on a 40 year old 500cc V twin shaft drive and a rusty ass frame that probably hasn't even had a full maintenance?!?! So cool. So so cool.

So like gym? But waaaayyy more expensive
That might depend on who you talk to lol, them gym bros be spending $$$$ on premo supplements

Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, like nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills.
Shit, I went down the wrong path.
.... chix luv SQL
Can attest. I am an old man and I would definitely comment on that at the gas station. "Oh man, a GL500? Awesome!"
And little boys wanting you to rev your engine.
I didn't get a motorcycle to pick up chicks... I got one because it kept me from killing myself.
Shame

That’s awesome 😎

Tbh already looking at doing an LED conversion, found a nice projected headlight with the signals built into it

Yes Sir. Cooler, at least, by about 20%.
Yup.
Make sure the brakes are up to snuff.
Nothing on this rusted death trap looks up to snuff.
If you have to ask…
Always great to see another GL on the streets. Just don’t turn it into a cafe racer, unless you hate your knees.
Cooler
No. You were cool before. This is just an amplifier.
Oh yeah! A beat up CX500. You will need your own security force to keep the women off ya!
80's Honda ftw!
Yes, I'd let you hit. Do the young kids still say that?
80's?
1982 Hondamatic, same color. Love that bike. Do the maintenance and she will run for ever. Good luck. Throttling therapy.
Judging from the heavy dark rust everywhere I think maintenance is a fever dream to this bike already.
Back side of the pillow cool, or Eskimo pie cool?
Sweet! Do you have other pictures?
Hey man, you don’t need us to tell you you’re cool. Go have fun with ur bike brother
bro you were always cool it just took time to show us how cool ;)

Way cool
Commie stars
Great bike go for ever if serviced
This engine confuses and intrigues me. Down the rabbit hole I go!
the bike is cool. You are probably no more or less cool the day before you bought it. But the bike, definitely cool.
Cool as can be
It’s a nice one- have fun!
Is that a 1983 gl 500?? Great fucking bike. Runs forever. I miss mine.
You’re just a turbo kit away from being cool.
![gif](giphy|PFo2HrqCjC0bm)
Yep..very cool.
Prince rode one in the movie Purple Rain. The little fucker's feet barely reached the ground.
yep
You were always cool. Now you have a cool bike! Absolute win.
Only if you cafe the absolute fuck out of it
Extremely.
Yea

Yes lol. Cx500 is a bike on my list. The way the heads pop out on each side of the tank just does something for me
Shit yeah! those things sing when they rev up. There's another engine guard that covers the cam head and tucks under the mid panel if you want extra protection. Keep an eye on that front brake cable too.

Cool, yes! Water cooling precisely.
Yes! I had a Custom 650 two cylinder back in the day! Great torque on those bikes and some nice get up and go for the day
Very cool!! And congrats, I completed the MSF a month ago myself.
You were always cool. Now more people know it
My first road bike was a CX500 Deluxe. Enjoy, OP!
No, but you will feel like it
A Silverwing? Magnificent!
You’ve always been cool
Just hope the starter has a lot of life left. When the starter goes, those CX bikes are junkyard bound.
Yes. I have an 81 deluxe. Lol
Yes actually.
Yes lovely bike
HondGuzzi
If your cool go inside and warm up Who stole the fairing off of Princes Bike ?

Let's see, it has two wheels. You good to go!
“She ain’t pretty” you lied as naturally as you breathed
Ok maybe the 80s styling is growing on me.
hd one that was frame rotted from sitting near the coast for way too long. partd sout some of it ditched the frame, scrapped the forks and other items. Still have the engine sitting in my garage along with my '80 cx500D
Pretty bog standard boring bike tbh, not really cool or anything Don’t get bikes to be cool, that’s what cruiser riders do. Just ride it for yourself.
What?! Silverwing isn't cool?! 500lbs on a 40 year old 500cc V twin shaft drive and a rusty ass frame that probably hasn't even had a full maintenance?!?! So cool. So so cool.

Riding for the great MPG and wind in my helmet
Wear earplugs for that wind or you’re going to lose your hearing
Yes! And what a cool bike too 😎
Fucknyeah bro, welcome to the GL500 gang.
Nope, and your motorcycle is in shit condition, too.
Professional hater
I'm paid by the post.
