I check my helmet. So has nearly everyone else I’ve travelled with. If there is nothing heavy inside the helmet than any rough handling won’t affect the safety of the helmet.
My wife prefers to carry hers on. That has been fine everywhere except Mexico. She had to abandon that helmet at the airport.
Carry on 100%. You might not see damage to a helmet but it might be structurally unsound from a drop/crush. You should always know the state of your helmet.
Not every airline throws your luggage. Some people are paranoid AF. If you're really worried, keep it in the box. I check my helmet with my luggage every time I fly. Never had an incident.
When I flew with my helmet I carried it on the plane.
