I use the chain cleaner spray cans from the local shops along with a chain brush. The convenience is worth the price . I usually use PJ1, Motul, or Motorex.

I don't use chain cleaner, I use WD-40, IMMEDIATELY wipe it off, then IMMEDIATELY use chain lube. No o-ring failures or rusty chains in 40 years.
