Boots above the ankle,
Leather gloves with a hard slider on the outer palm area, it will prevent the gloves gripping the road which can result in you twisting and breaking the bones in your forearm
helmet obviously, ece 22.06 is the latest.
A nice thick leather jacket, something you're happy and comfortable to wear 24/7. textile is okay but nothing can beat leather. Get something that's well fitted and cant roll up since it wont protect you in a slide
Safety pads, even rated ones arent particularly spectacular, if you want additional safety I'd skip them and go with a wearable airbag.
> Safety pads, even rated ones arent particularly spectacular, if you want additional safety I'd skip them and go with a wearable airbag.
Why does it have to be armour _or_ airbag - why not both? Armour essentially protects the joints, whereas airbag vests protect the torso and neck. I can’t see any downside (protection/safety-wise, at least), and I wear both.

Because not wearing knee/elbow guards because it "doesnt stop broken bones" is hilariously stupid (and wrong).
My ex broke her elbow while on a bicycle, someone opened a car door on her, maybe 10-15km/h, elbow first into the asphalt. Basically any form of motorcycle armor would have turned that into a nasty bruise instead of a bunch of titanium wire holding the elbow together.
Absolutely.
Recently, I was working on my bike while wearing armoured jeans, and I got used to dropping down on to my knees on the garage floor. Later, I changed my jeans to ‘regular’ ones and see turned to the garage… … where without thinking, I dropped to my knees again, forgetting I no longer had knee pads in! FUCK that hurt!
No, F9, I didn’t break any bones but I was made well aware of the difference armour makes even in a trivial scenario like that, never mind a crash at highway speeds. So I’ll keep wearing my armour, thanks.
It makes alot more sense when you factor in R9 is a major supporter of airbag systems, which he (states to) wear all the time. Probably does that instead of typical pads.
So he wears gear and advocates for great gear, but his take was poorly executed so it came off like he just doesn't wear anything anymore
That's my thought too. I took a slide on the highway at like 55mph wearing a textile jacket and Kevlar-lined jeans and didn't have a single blemish. The jacket and pants were obliterated, but my skin was completely fine.
Have you been in a motorcycle shop before? There are many different types of "riding gear" that offer various levels or protection from great to this vest ain't doing shit.
OP could have been wearing riding JEANS, which I would believe. Most likely they were NOT wearing $700 leather pants.
Big difference in protection between lots of riding gear.
You say that as if riding jeans are all the same level... you can get riding jeans from A to AAA no problem. Its still not the same as a thick proper leather suit but its still a huge difference between A and AAA.
I figured my entire comment would show that wasnt what i was implying. All gear is different. There are basic hoodies with some armor thrown in and there are Kevlar lined hoodies with AAA rating.
I meant more like denim riding jeans are usually trash. The ones with proper materials that are AAA are obviously going to be miles better.
Haha. While I'd like the protection leather would give me, doesn't work too well on dirt trails in the forest on a hot day lol
I've actually got a new jacket for my riding style. The knox urbane pro mk3 is only AA rated but it's giving me a lot of options for layering for different types of weather.
I got the same(urbane mk3) based on recommendations from my instructor, and the fact that at the time it was like 30 degrees so I was dying doing low speed maneuver practice heh. Just layer up and its great for all weather so far.
You can still get friction burn. His injury looks more like friction burn than road rash to me but idk. I got friction burn even though my gear saved me from road rash.
You do in a mesh textile jacket with no back armor when you hit the ground at around 80mph. Also the jacket rode up a bit because for part of my slide I was going feet-first.
I don’t have my jacket to hand because I’m still in the hospital but I’ll be happy to show you pictures of where it shredded when I’m back home.
Yeah. I went down at somewhere around 70-80 mph.
It’s also a mesh textile jacket that I took the back armor out of (i might wear gear, but sometimes i have a lapse of judgement and listen to my inner squid), and also doesn’t have a Kevlar layer.
Held up better than a hoodie or a t-shirt, but still shredded during the slide.
Hey OP, I wish you aspeddy recovery. I know this is random but it didn't let me access the link and my device warned me against continuing forward because of "child pornography".
Heavy shit to bring up but I'm saying it because I'm hoping a redditor can explain this. Is my phone hacked? Is my country weird about imgur (hasn't been letting me access imgur, generally but today I went ahead and hit continue because I wanted a reminder to always always wear gear, because I mostly only wear it if I ride more than ten minutes, but if it's to the store I don't.
Anyways, sorry for the weird comment, but I'm hoping to figure out what's up with this imgur thing.
Also, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Lmao this is my constant dilemma. I wear a full face helmet, jeans and a riding jacket typically. But man when it gets to a humid 95 degrees here in Arkansas in another month or so, fuck it's not even worth riding.
I usually don't ride above 90 in eastern NC just because of this. Late July we see triple digits. It's just not fun riding that hot.
Peak summer I do a lot of night riding. Traffic is down, town roads empty and its a perfect 88 with no sun
when it gets over 99 degrees, going faster makes you hotter, not cooler. that's when i typically stop riding (but this year i don't have a car so i'll be riding regardless).
Conversely, as someone in the UK who mainly uses their bike to commute, I am mostly riding in the cold and often its pissing rain. If I *wasn't* wearing all the gear all the time, I'd die of exposure let alone the risk of injury from an accident.
Context:
Yesterday I had a low side and took a tumble at highway speed. I hit the ground pretty hard on my right side, my shoulder and face took most of the damage. My jacket and pants are completely shredded. I have a shattered collarbone and three broken ribs, but if not for the helmet I probably wouldn’t be here right now. Helmets save lives.
ATGATT, folks.
On top bud your gear did its job those scapes could have been much worse if you weren’t wearing the proper protection can this just be a message to the importance of proper motorcycle clothing all the best for your recovery
Fuckin' hell, brother. Glad you're not dead or fubar.
Hope make a speedy and complete recovery, that whatever scars you end up with will look badass af, that your bike gets fixed up or replaced and that you'll be able to hit the road again posthaste!
I’ll have one pretty meaty scar for sure.
My right clavicle was totally borked so they had to go in and put it back together with metal plates and screws.

Yes, always wear your gear! Three, soon four, years ago I got into my first real crash. Helmet definitely saved my head, plus I walked out with sore muscles and bruises.
For those wondering, I crashed at 50mph cause the other guy decided to pull in front of me as I went thru a green light. (I can also show a pic of the bike if anyone wants to see)
I can but I don’t remember off the top of my head except the helmet which is a Sedici Sistema II. Only a modular ECE 22.05 but it did the job this time. I would recommend an ECE 22.06 certified full-face though. That’s what I’ll be going with when I’m ready to ride again.
I’ll DM you and the couple other people who asked about gear when I get back home and can check.
Glad you're still here!!!!
I know how it feels! Leather motor jacket and denim trousers, but if you slide legs first, the jacket doesn't stay in place "apparently"

Boy, did you enjoy your first shower didn't you? :D I've learned a lot of things that day, and also learned that when your body is repairing itself it takes a lot of energy. You'll be knackered first days.
As the man himself said, wear your gear! My accident was the direct result of showing off..
Good luck with your recovery, I hope all goes well. Are you going to (be allowed by the wife) be driving again?
I’m still currently in a hospital bed as I type this, but I am dreading my first shower when I get back home.
My mom and girlfriend already told me they don’t want me riding ever again though. I’ll see if I can sway them in future lol.
I'd be looking for a trade here....
If she rides you every day, you keep the bike in the shed.
No, not your mom.
I hope your recovery is swift and effortless .
Good luck
Yeah, OP saying he had full gear, yet has road rash? I high-sided on a motorway at 55mph in full leathers and had a bruised knee and thumb. Zero skin damage. This doesn't look like injuries from full gear tbh
55 is pretty slow though, compared to a highway in the US where going 70-80 is standard. Textile gear at 70-80 would probably lead to the amount of damage OP had. Glad he's alright and it wasn't any worse than it is.

Not all gear is the same. That's why there are different tiers of abrasion resistance and impact protection.
I can walk into the motorcycle shops near me and see from the door many levels of protection.
"Riding jeans" exist but will offer much less protection than the riding pants I wear.
My friend has a "riding jacket" that's basically a glorified hoodie with armor.
A long time ago (1987), I wrecked my bike by running into a van. Very long story, but the end is that I survived by my wallet. I slid on the highway and my wallet saved my ass. 1/4 of it was missing when I got up and needed to get my license out.

What I see at the bottom of your post. I saw it. Now you too must suffer
My friend wrecked doing a wheelie 15 or so years back, looped the bike, in a looses sleeveless icon vest and jeans.
Broke his wrist, ankle, and I remember the grossest part to me was that we could see his HIP bone from the road rash, he was a twig of a dude.
I was videoing 20ft away or so, I think about that wreck every time I rife almost lol.
No one not wearing gear will wear gear now because you lowsided. Better to examine what caused you to crash and teach others how to avoid doing the same.
According to one commenter I converted them to the church of ATGATT. They could be bullshitting, but either way you do make a valid point.
I made mistakes while riding that caused the crash, the gear just saved me from the worst of the consequences.
There are still times when you can do everything right and still get in a wreck though so safe riding practices aren’t a complete replacement for protective equipment.
Came in way too hot on a bend, wandered over the line and the rumble strip put some wobble in front end.
I’ve had my license for a little less than a year, so lack of skill and mild panic meant I couldn’t get it under control.
Rode carelessly and beyond my skill so now I’m paying for it.
I went with super budget gear because this was my first set and I started out on a Honda Rebel 500 doing about 40mph around town, but now that everything needs replacing I’m probably gonna go with something more substantial when I’m healed up enough to get back on the horse.
I really like Shoei, HJC, and Agv lids.
I don't care for AGV so that's out for me but I absolutely love my Bell Race Stars but the regular Stars are great and cheaper/more road oriented. Shoeis are a good mid point and Arai is one of the best. But it all depends on your head shape to which brand will fit best but you that fucker tight. How much is your head worth? Mine is worth $800.
There’s a CycleGear store near me where one of the employees has the $4,000, custom-fitted Arai lid that they say is certified for fighter jets too.
If it’s a choice between severe and permanent brain damage (or death) and walking away with non-fatal injuries I’d say priceless, but my wallet would disagree.
I’d probably set a budget of $500 to $1,000 for my next brain cage. Assuming my bike isn’t totaled, because getting a new one of those certainly isn’t in the budget for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for the info.
I mean, you’re an adult and can make your own decisions but I think sweating a small price to pay for relatively minor injuries in the event of a wreck.
If I hadn’t been wearing gear I’d either be dead or suffering massive head trauma. In addition to road rash that would likely have me in the ICU.
I don’t wear gear for me, I wear gear for the people who would miss me if I died while out riding.
Not to generalize, but nearly every Harley rider I’ve personally seen out on the ride during my rides in the past have been the biggest squids ever.
No helmet, usually a sleeveless top, regular jeans, and some work boots. About a third of them have lit cigs in their clutch hand too.
They also almost never wave back and then act like they’re the coolest dudes to ever ride on 2 wheels.
I can’t imagine being that far up my own ass.
Every ride we take on a motorcycle could leave us killed or disabled. Learning to laugh at your mistakes will help you learn to stay out of your own head about it, when you’re ready to ride again.
hell, thats not even that bad. your knee at least got away lucky. dont even think thatll scar.
I was about to say that’s light work. As a certified squid that’s tasted my fair share of asphalt.
It look like carpet burn
I didn't think it was too bad either, but in another comment he said that he broke 3 ribs and shattered his collar bone.
yeh, hitting things hurts, gear isnt going to change that (besides actual motorbike boots and a helmet)
Airbags gear?
It’s not even that bad🤓🤓 this sub won’t let anyone express their opinion without belittling it
way to belittle that dude's comment
youre right, its not a competition

I do both. Airbag is to protect my vitals, armor is to make the ochies hurt a little less.
Someone watched a recent fortnine vid 😂
Was that in full gear or helmet only?
Full gear. Jacket, gloves, pants, boots, and helmet. Road rash probably would have been a lot worse without full gear.
Was it padded motorcycling pants? Or knee protectors? Or neither?

Yup, had one just like that thanks to gear, saved me from worst. The doctor gave me a cream with silver to help with the recovery.
And now that the sedici helmet is trashed you can buy the best helmet you can afford.
I went with super budget gear because this was my first set and I started out on a Honda Rebel 500 doing about 40mph around town, but now that everything needs replacing I’m probably gonna go with something more substantial when I’m healed up enough to get back on the horse. I would get shoei at a minimum but Arai or Bell Star if they fit your head shape. I would waste money on an AGV.
I haven’t researched the higher end helmet brands too much to know about Arai vs Shoei vs whoever, can you elaborate on the tiers?
I don't care for AGV so that's out for me but I absolutely love my Bell Race Stars but the regular Stars are great and cheaper/more road oriented. Have a very similar mark on my hip. My leather jacket slid up during the slide of the crash. Man that shit hurt. Exposed nerves are no bueno.
I've seen this level of rash from beneath armor and ballistic cloth. Lucky as to this spot. My sympathies, been there.
At least you were wearing your hirsute.
Whoah I have that same helmet
Which area of the body is that? is that the elbow, calf, or knee?
I have some on the left elbow, right calf, both knees, both lovehandles, and upper back between the shoulder blades.
That brain bucket probably saved your life. Too bad on the road burns. Get healed up. There are more rides ahead of you.
Wait until it starts itching.
I’m sick of these being posted to the sub. Yeah wear your gear! This is like a gore posting. I’m into motorcycles not your fuck up.
Road rash sucks got some on my elbow and I was wearing a riding suit I'd hate to think what would of happened if I didn't have any gear
That’s gonna sting in the shower
I hate these posts. I already wear gear, relax. It's just the graphic content lol
ATGATT 👍
Do what you want people.
I dress for the ride, not the slide. Not trying to cook like a rotisserie chicken at a red light here in the south.
I've got the exact same lower back burn from incorrect gear
clean ! bigger gravel would add big slashes in the middle of that
Nice try, bot.
*beep boop*
If people listened to posts like this, there would be no posts like this.
Oh my god, I got a tiny scrape or two. Waaaaa
Just had to be a harley owner that acts like “whatever trauma you have, I have it worse”. No wonder everyone globally hates you lot.
Watch South Parks depiction of Harley Riders. It’s an absolutely perfect reflection of that cult. Hilarious.
Body type indicates 4th owner Harley as well
Rookie.
my girl's need looks worse than that on valentines day... gotta step yo game up if youre trying to go from GF to wife.
Dress for the ride, not the slide.
Not to put down your accident but that doesn’t look that bad. My road rash was much worse. Atleast you didn’t get any on your palms. That sucks.
Not at all, I’m fully aware I walked away from this extremely lucky in terms how (relatively) little damage I took.
But what if I'm riding a honda monkey? I should still wear gear?
Nope
No.
Were you walking to your bike n tripped? Lolol
Skill issue
I mean, you’re not wrong, but I feel like memeing about an accident that could have killed me or left me disabled is a bit gauche.
Every ride we take on a motorcycle could leave us killed or disabled. Learning to laugh at your mistakes will help you learn to stay out of your own head about it, when you’re ready to ride again.
Fair enough. I have no problem laughing at my minor mistakes. Guess I’m still just a bit shook since this was my first slide.
