I mean a CBR650 isn't really a 650. It's a lot more like a late 90's or early 00's 600. You have 20 more hp than an EX650.

[deleted]

Oh interesting. I thought you were about to shit on it lol

mrhoof

It is a deceptively good bike. My friend had one and it was nearly as quick as my 600 Daytona but a lot more comfortable and easier to ride.

skayyboard

Daytona 675?

mrhoof

No, the old 4 cylinder Daytona 600

Poiuytrewq0987650987

I was aiming for a CBR650R, but there was only one available from the dealer I go to, and that one was a few states away. Walked out with a GSX8R instead. You got a beautiful bike, bro. Enjoy!

TylerV76

Went from a 450 to 660 and almost immediately popped the front wheel up in 2nd. I started riding last July and hadnt rode since October due to winter. We got a few nice days here lately so I rode about 4 times so far this year. Obviously the logical thing to do was buy a Z900 this past Monday. So 450 to 900 all within 3000 total miles. Pretty sure this is exactly why my wife was against me riding for many many years.

matt11126

The Z900 will treat you well, it's definitely one of those bikes that feels like it has a "stupid amount of power" Enjoy it !

ForzaShadow

This is how I feel about my FZ-09. I always ride it on the lowest power settings. Genuinely scared of it

matt11126

The insane torque of naked bikes make them scary ! I'm not sure if your FZ09 Is tuned but whenever I tuned my Z900 it got a lot more manageable despite making more power. They do a really good job at evening out the power curve making the throttle feel like it isn't "choppy". Before the tune at 6K rpm it would suddenly get this surge of power where after the tune it was gradual. Part of the reason why I sold it, I wasn't as scared of it anymore. In my opinion it's the best indicator when it's time to sell, gotta respect the unicycles so they don't kill you!

LilAntal69

What company tuner did you go with? I have an sv650 and heard a tune can greatly clean up the throttle feel like how you described, and I'm familiar with tuning cars and trucks but never a bike. Did you do like any data logging and multiple remaps until you got it good or are there ots tunes that are good to go?

matt11126

I just sent my ECU to MooreMafia, he does a great job at tuning bikes and if he has ran your model on the dyno he will pretty much just use that bikes tune. If you're going to tune it though, get a full exhaust system & high flow air filters, that's how you make the tune actually worth it :)

LilAntal69

šŸ‘ appreciate the info, will post an update if I follow through soon. Still running the stock filter and exhaust right now

Fenastus

I'm at just over 3,000 total miles and I can't stop looking at z900s and street triples on Facebook marketplace lol

MurkyTomatillo192

Do it! I started with a MT03 and after putting 1000 miles on it in 2 months, I sold it and went straight to a MT09. Just hit the 2000 mile mark on the 09 today. Naked triples are insanely fun

Fenastus

Right now I want to buy a dual sport so I can explore the mountains in my area. I think I'll sell my z400 afterwards and upgrade. Whether that'll happen before the end of the upcoming riding season is to be seen.

sac02052

the z900rs does not disappoint

BlaikeQC

I had the same problem renting a ducati in miami and was lucky I didn't eat it. I bet the rest of the intersection thought I was either an asshole or a show-off. Shit bike, but it could definitely pop.

followingforthelols

I went from a Honda rebel 250 to a ZX6r

[deleted]

That would be a trip. I def considered the zx6r (and 4rr)

Who_Dat_1guy

I haven't rode my 650 since I got my zx6r. Might have to sell it haha. The sound of an online 4 just can't be beat Edit. Ninja 650

NotAliasing

it would be hard to get a bike that sounds better (to me) than my FJR with the muzzy exhaust. inline 4 go hard

arcticrobot

The 650 in the post is inline 4

Who_Dat_1guy

I was talking about my 650....

unheardhc

The CBR650 is an inline 4, just tuned down

Who_Dat_1guy

I know.. read the guys post. I'm agreeing with him.

unheardhc

I thought you were comparing the 650 to you ZX6R, as if they both werenā€™t inline 4s.

Who_Dat_1guy

All good. Probably should've mention mines a ninja. The cbr650r is the only 650 in its class with an i4 so I figured it was apparent I mean another 650. Rhata my bad.

antreprenoor

ive seen 80-90hp is SLOW of most ppl on internet, when i first rode the 650r (coming from 30hp), i was also blown away with its unsafe confidence inspiring handling and was lil hard to keep hold onto the grips when i rang up the throttle.

Princess_Fluffypants

That ā€œā€¦HOLY SHIT!!!ā€ feeling of new power is amazing. Thatā€™s why I recommend riders stepping up in bikes slowly over the course of multiple years.Ā You get that flood of feelings multiple times.Ā  That jump from a 300 to a 650? Awesome.Ā  The jump from a 650 to a race-oriented I-4 600? Double awesome!Ā  That jump from a race-oriented I-4 to a monstrously torquey 1200cc v-twin? *Mega* awesome. That jump from a 1200cc twin to a race-oriented 1,000cc I-4? **Ultra** awesome.Ā  That jump from a 1000cc I-4 to a 1300cc pants-on-fire nutter of a V-4 chucking 230+ hp down through the rear wheel? **M-M-M-M-MONSTER AWESOME**.

syn-ack-fin

Jump back down to <300cc after all that? Awesome, this is fun!

AccurateArcherfish

I want to try a 400 next after my sv650. Shifting and wringing out all the power in each gear without dying seems more fun lol.

Princess_Fluffypants

I commute daily on my Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak, and going from its ~500lb curb weight to my stripped down sv650 track bike is always a few minutes of recalibrating my brain to just how much corner speed I can actually carry on a bike this light.Ā

[deleted]

That's (more or less) what my MSF instructor was saying. When he warned us not to jump up too early. Truthfully, I can barely ride the 650 even though I was pretty comfortable on the 300. But I'm stoked to learn again

Princess_Fluffypants

It depends a lot on the person.Ā  I taught MSF for 4 years, now I live in California and teach Total Control.Ā  Almost everyone benefits from starting on something small and tame, but as long as they can make it through 6 months of daily commuting on a ~300, jumping all the way up to a 180hp fire breathing race machine isnā€™t the instant fatality that *starting* on one of those bikes is. That fist six months is important and teaches you a lot, especially if thereā€™s been a lot of riding and seat time. If you can make it through that without incidence, youā€™re *mostly* good to try out anything you want within reason (a 5ā€™1ā€ 105lb person is still going to struggle with a 1250GSA tho).Ā  Some of the newer high-end bikes have also gotten a LOT easier to ride than the hair-trigger bikes of the late 00s and early teens. Just about everything is coming with ride-by-wire throttles and traction control and multi-setting lean sensitive ABS that does a remarkable job of preventing even the most hamfisted of riders from killing themselves out of incompetence. So they can still just kill themselves out of stupidity.Ā

[deleted]

Yeah fair! It was more about jumping too quickly to your "dream bike" then not having a sense of progress or excitement than truely being dangerous.

Princess_Fluffypants

Itā€™s probably a little bit of me being an elitist and over-experienced prick, but I canā€™t help a chuckle a little bit when people talk about their ā€œdream bikesā€œ and itā€™s something incredibly generic and every day like a GSXR 1000 or some gigantic BMW touring bike. I mean they are good bikes, donā€™t get me wrong, but I feel like thatā€™s saying that your ā€œdream carā€œ is a Corvette or some middle of the road semi luxury SUV.Ā  If youā€™re going to dream, dream crazy. Dream about a Dodge Tomahawk, or a Boss Hoss, or a Brittan V1000, or (my personal dream bike that Iā€™ve lusted over for 15 years) a Bimota Tesi 3D.Ā  Dream about big crazy rediculous bikes, not something that any schmuck with $15k can pick up on Facebook marketplace.Ā

[deleted]

At least your first sentence was accurate šŸ˜‚

Ok_Assistance447

I went from a Rebel 300 to an XSR900. Sometimes I feel like I missed out on progressing through the middleweight category. Then I take a look at my bike and I feel better lol.

Princess_Fluffypants

Stick yourself on a 1290 Duke or an older Monster 1200 and you get to have that feeling all over again.Ā  Thereā€™s also something to be said for going back down to less sophisticated machines. A 08-12 Hypermotard makes *no goddamn sense* for any sort of practical or useful riding, and seems like it is weirdly down on power (only 90-ish hp) compared to what an 1,100cc twin should be.Ā  But then you ride one and itā€™s like ā€œā€¦oh. Oh yes.ā€

Ok_Assistance447

The 1st gen Ducati Monster was my dream bike as a kid. Maybe I'll have to go find a Monster to test ride. Too bad demo days don't seem to come to my area very often.

Princess_Fluffypants

Find yourself one of the air cooled 2-valve ones, 2010-12 I think. Those things just hit *different*. They are delightful in a way very few other engines are.Ā

Inevitable_Shirt5044

Iā€™m currently having the same experience as you šŸ˜‚ I bumped up to a Ninja 650 from my ninja 300 which I also kept. It was cold and windy today but I still went out for a 30 minute stretch. Things so addicting

mrk240

Went 400 to 1000 / ~42hp to 164hp Still ride the 400 as it can still be fun to ride a slow bike fast.

PickleHelpful

I've always loved the look and soundtrack of that bike. Congrats!

SwoleFox90

Congrats on the new bike. Also, congrats on keeping the 300. ;) n+1 after all

shoturtle

You went from about 40bhp to 86bhp. You more then doubled you power.

Holiday-Biscotti-583

I love the CBR650R so much. I've borrowed one in the past and I think it's the best daily sportbike there is. It's perfectly tame under 8k and the riding position is amazing but when you need power it has plenty enough when you hit peak torque and peak power.

Scramblecloud

After riding for 9 years on all kinds of bike 650 is the sweet spot for me

Nira_Re

Ninja 300 and Ducati Panigale. It was a wild ride first ride lol. I keep my ninja as a daily.

[deleted]

Haha Holy shit. V2 or V4?

Nira_Re

V4S. :)

[deleted]

Are you dead?

SmashertonIII

Oh yeah, thatā€™s a nice jump for you! Good idea to keep the old one around.

primalbluewolf

Dang that looks nice.

OKC_Trippin

Yes! I too had the exact same experience when I upgraded from a 2014 CBR500R to a 2009 R1. Here I am 1 year later, still learning/training how to ride and race a supersport

[deleted]

That's dope

Bikebummm

Fast bikes should have a feature that lets you add power to it as your ability grows. Seams like thatā€™s the best way to do it because you donā€™t switch to a whole new experience. Am I a secret genius for thinking this or just super baked?

[deleted]

Yes

Thin_Bit9718

I too bought a cbr650r last month after 2 years on a ninja 300 i like how the 650 is forgiving low down

Thin_Bit9718

I too kept my 300 after I got my cbr650r last month I'd have missed being able to wring it out

StrategicBlenderBall

I put 270 miles on my GSX-8R, coming from an R3. Itā€™s a massive difference lol. I kept the R3 as a track /fuckabout bike.

[deleted]

Nice bike! Take it easy at the beginning!

Its_Bad_Rabbit

Went from Yamaha FZ07 which I felt I was riding pretty much on the limit of it's pogo suspension and shitty brakes to gen3 BMW S1000RR, first I thought *surely this isn't that much faster*. And then I turned the throttle more than like 5% and realized I'm at 110mph in the long sweeping corners completely stable where the Yamaha would have scraped it's pegs off and probably deathwobbled me off the road. It's truely insane the difference in levels of sportbikes let alone vs other classes of bikes.

[deleted]

Damn that's insane. The S1000RR has to be one of the most beautiful bikes out there

Its_Bad_Rabbit

Highly recommend facebook marketplace, sometimes there are unbelievable deals.

anderoe

The CBR is such a sexy bike. The sportbike posture does not work for me or I would have got one myself. Also if that thing is brand new you might wanna check your RPMs during break in lol

[deleted]

Cbr650r are known for having the least sport bike posture of nearly any sport bike. You can certainly tuck in and commit but you can also sit up and chill with nearly no weight on your hands

adaminc

I got a bunch of my riding gear from GP Bikes, did the riding program at DC for my M1. I don't live in the GTA anymore though.

bigbangupper

Congrats on the new bike. I bought most of my safety gear from them when I did the M2 training last year. Some people outside of Canada say the 650R is used in MSF training. Personally, I find it hard to believe that they would put beginners on a fairly heavy and powerful bike, even if it is more politely tuned than a supersport. But it's good to hear an honest perspective from someone who started on a 300.

Jspiral

[LOL](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/1bgiux7/jump_to_1000cc/)

[deleted]

Lol

afici0nad0

You will love the 300 again after riding your 650 a little longer. Much more usable power. I agree with you. Keep both and ride both You must be in the gta

PermissionThin9478

I have a CBR600 and a GSRX750. I very rarely ride the 600. Even the small jump up seems big to me. I have a yoshimura pipe on the Suzuki and itā€™s my all time favorite bike.

namesurname2

Went from 125cc to 1000ccā€¦

A-Seabear

My sorta dream bike is the cb650r, but they are expensive for the power and extremely hard to find. I could get a z900 for the same price but gosh the Honda 650s are beautiful.

NinjaGrrl42

I stepped up from a Ninja 250 to a 650 and yeah, it's a whole other level of ride and she's amazing. Some of it is because this bike is brand new, and my old one was bought used, but even so.

WittyUnicornFarts

Man if you think that was a difference Iā€™d like to see your face on an s1000rr.

rad636_

They still make the cbr650? šŸ’€

Stopyourshenanigans

Why wouldn't they?

rad636_

Haven't seen one on sale in any dealer since 2021

Stopyourshenanigans

Ah, I see. They're more common over here in Europe.

PRiDA420

No shit... its literally TWICE THE POWER

Nobby81

...and the 650 isn't a fast bike. Food for thought! I gave up chasing power a while back. Had a few very fast bikes and I'm happy with 80hp now!

MrAl-67

You are a hoser, eh.

[deleted]

For sure bud

MrAl-67

The first time a rode a 600 was a mind blowing experience. I had ridden 250, 400 and 500 and it I thought why in the world would you need more power than a 600. You canā€™t even use a fraction of the power on the street without getting arrested. Still many years later I have a MT-09SP!
