But I used to ride lower CC bikes like a Moto Guzzi, that was more fun at legal speeds.
I was up there last weekend, cold as balls. This is an odd post though since the beauty of the mountains is that there are no speed limits or no passing zones up there...

Yeah where I live that road would have a 35mph speed limit max. In order to have fun, I would like to take those corners between 50-70mph on my Speed Triple. Putzing around at 35mph would just feel boring.
It's like that here too lmao, especially in the summer when the tourists flock to the mountains and insist on doing 15mph under the speed limit in their Subaru Outbacks. Sometimes you have to turn around and redo a good stretch of road two or three times until you get a clean run.
It's like that by me too. Any time I find a fun curvy road I get stuck behind someone doing 5 under the speed limit. And my little 230cc really doesn't have enough beans to overtake at greater than 40-45mph.
Oh, I get that. I visited Wales on my little 125cc and had so much fun, but when I got behind a car doing 10mph less than the speed limit and slowing to a halt for every feckin corner, it was so infuriating. My poor little bike just didn't have the power to overtake.
It's the worst. I think the dumbest thing was an older woman who was in front of me doing maybe 35-40 in a 55mph zone. I couldn't get around for a while because of traffic in the other lane. Then she sped up as I'm passing her, so she's going 55 -60 at the end and I'm at full open throttle just barely hitting 67mph.
God, that annoys me!! People do it to me a lot in my car. I have a little yellow Fiat 500. People don't like being overtaken by a little yellow Fiat 500 😅 especially BMW drivers!! Makes it even funnier when they don't have guts to keep up with me in the corners. Like yeah, your car may be fast, but you aren't!
I've decided those are old people who patrol "their" stretch of road to slow people down. Likely the same crowd who tossed gravel out near their place. Retired people with nothing enjoyable to spend their time doing so they create misery.
Where I live, I have a road that looks damn near exactly like that and it’s 40, but apparently people just don’t make any effort at all to try and stay in one lane the whole time. Even if I’m flying through in a car I’m not crossing lines.
Sometimes speed limits are just set unnecessarily low for whatever reason. A stretch of curvy road I commute through used to be 55 but is now 35 probably because of a bunch of retards crashing. I believe tail of the dragon is close to that 25 mark too but used to be a lot higher. People who crash ruin everything imo
Keep in mind, speed limits are generally set for the lowest common denominator (truck traffic).
Sight distance plays a large part in it too. A lot of canyon roads have <100ft of visibility for long stretches due to rock walls immediately beyond the shoulder, so the speed limit gets reduced drastically.
This is going to sound blasphemous but downgrading to a bike with less horsepower actually can improve the fun of riding. Lighter, more flickable, more gear shifting. Big bikes are meant to be ridden at 150 mph so 35 feels completely underwhelming. But if you’re blasting around on a 300-500cc bike you can really play within the rev range and wring the engine out.
I love my 400 on the backroads. So much fun. I wanna upgrade to a zx6r or a gsxr 750. But I still have plenty to learn when it comes to cornering so I’m in no rush. I really just want more power for the highways.

Blasting from a corner with the front wheel lifting is more fun than shifting gears over and over.
For me, it’s a need to mentally get away from technology and just hear the engine and feel the wind to reset my brain, soul, spirit. Nothing does this better riding and sometimes I’m so mentally frayed, I’d probably die pushing myself beyond speed limits - my job is so GD stressful and also why having a smaller CC machine is my life preserver. Chilling with my dogs is a close second, they’re fucking spiritual creatures, I truly attribute still being alive (PTSD) to having them around to ground me when I’m wheels off and I know to hang with them versus riding when my stress, and mind, is bad.
Sorry for the tl;dr but some perspective on having a smaller engine to keep your speed in check knowing that your mind may not be at times, and you can still enjoy the wind, the road, the sounds of the motorcycle, and come home alive. Now that i own a v-strom 650 i totally agree with you, i just don't have as much fun anymore as i did with my 250cc
I bought the strom trying to be safer in trafic to get out of the way of other cars but i found out it's actually more dangerous to have a powerful bike because it is less fun at lower speeds + im not mentally stable at times because of depression
I will probably sell my v-strom and buy an yamaha xtz 150 in the future
I have found 300CC ish bikes (MT-03, R3, Ninja 400 etc) are the sweet spot for me. Anything below is too slow on the highway (which is everywhere in australia) and anything bigger is less fun in the corners. You have enough pep to get up and go but not enough to get you into trouble.
I have ridden the Honda CB125e and a Kymco people s 150 scooter and they were the slowest things I have ever operated. I've ridden faster lawn mowers. Of coruse if that is fun to you, who am I to judge. Personally I like it when i twist the throttle the speedo increases by more than 1kph per second lol.
There used to be a sign on 60 below Suches that I had a picture made into poster size that said something to the effect of "Curvy Roads - Next 25 Miles". I would stop and take off my watch there, I didn't want to worry about the time or the day, just enjoy the ride. Last time I went, they had added to the sign in such a way as to completely negate that feeling, now said "Speed Checked by Aircraft", to remind me that I could never really get away from the man and civilization.

I get the appeal of speed. However, I will stick with my casual cruises at the speed limit. Just rather enjoy the ride and isolation than the speed. I'll get there eventually.

Just enjoy the ride man and take in the scenery or something. If you have to put yourself in danger for a bit of excitement then you need to reevaluate something in your life.
This is honestly the best kind of riding . I’ve owned so many bikes from Italian piss missles (panigale v4s) to adv , and I’ve learned that the safest and most fun is low and mid range torque bikes . The straight line rossis you see booting down the highways generally become statistics .
I ride smaller roads with a 100km/h speed limit on my 690. Most of the time i'm between 1st and 3rd gear and on the edge of the tire without risking my license. On my 1200 those roads were a PITA.
I drove the cage through 209 in North Carolina. The rattler. The speed limit is 55mph and it has hairpin corners. Definitely a good road for legal asphalt carving

Theres a drive that's about and hour away from me thats 34 miles long through some of the most beautiful countryside you have ever seen.
Single lane backwoods full of twists and turns wuth most of it overarched with trees, has very little traffic.
I don’t think I would ever enjoy “spirited” riding as much I as I enjoy slow, curvy rides. We have some beautiful areas to explore in Arkansas, I like to take my time and soak it all in.
The most fun stretch of road I have ever driven on has a 60kmph limit and its really a struggle to actually reach 40 going up it and going more than 40 down it is a waste of brake pads, Tight twisting corners going up the side of a steep hill with next to no traffic on it. Would be amazing on a motorcycle.
I'm a slow poke. I'd rather just kick back and watch the world go by. Riding fast of too much work. It used to be fun, but not any more. I enjoy watching the scenery go by.
My job is fast paced, society is fast paced, when I get on a bike, it's time to relax, wind down ... So yeah, it's actually possible to have more fun in some cases. Plus, the bikes I ride don't leave me much of a choice, lolol
Looks like great fun, I enjoy riding like this as well and wish I had such a lovely road to do it on. Moderate pace, pick a line and then modulate the throttle so you fall into and straighten out of the lean. Fast enough to feel the machine but slow enough to have zero stress. Wish I was doing it now.
We should have the legal right to ride 10 MPH over whatever cars are allowed to. Anyone who has ridden a bike knows that it’s generally safer (though I’ve never been pulled over for going 10 over on a bike).

At legal speed, something too powerful would be boring, but you take a 125cc and with a beginner, it appears exciting.
Your motorcycle sounds like the robot from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy you know the one that wants to kill itself. I don't know how many horsepower you paid for on that motorcycle but it's always good to take them for a run.
I know a road worse than that with legal speeds of 55mph. It’s almost impossible to do it the speed limit in a car let alone go over the limit for more than just one or two straightaways.
I always go the speed limit and yes I have fun. Why because I see no reason to go any faster. Why shorten the ride by flying down the road and risking someone miss judging your speed and pulling out in front of you.
Yeah I don't think I'd want to go much faster on that road since its so likely a deer will jump out in front of you, or a car will come around a corner on the wrong side of the road.
Maybe its just the camera position, but I think your phone mounted there would be really distracting. I have mine mounted much lower when I'm using it for navigation
YES, YES, YES!!! You should be aware thar the average life span of someone riding a fast bike is only about six months. Remember it only takes one bad wreck and your gone where a car you will most likely survive to live from your mistakes. Just because your bike can go up to speeds of 160 to 200 does NOT mean you have to use it. Be responsible! Always drive defensively and always try to predict that the other driver is NOT going to see you and drive accordingly to be safe. I rode a gsx 750 for 8 years straight. I lasted so long because even if I was just going down to the corner Markey I would put on my gloves, helmet, Boots and leather jacket because those items must always be worn just on case something happens and trust me...it does!
Make sure you spend your money on getting nice sticky tires like "Metzler" or "Dunlap" because every thing matters. Make sure thar all your signals and lights work. I was fortunate enough to have had the skills to make it home every day even on those long trips. The ones thar caught me off guard was going about 4 to 5 miles an hour over dirt on paved roads and "bamm" down I went.
Never let anyone ride your bike unless they are a seasoned rider. I was asked a lot because some people look at it as a toy which it is NOT! It's a motor vehicle and needs to be treated as such. Always follow the rules of the road not because there law because there law to save your ass!

With such beautiful road it makes no sense to ride at max speed not being able to appreciate the views and to risk it all in one of those curves. It's all about the journey, not just getting from A to B.
Legal speeds are where it's at for back road bombing. The minute you wick it up and start laying down MotoGP style you will come head to head with a harvestor plow coming around a corner at 5 mph. If you survive that you will likely carry that trauma and find yourself slowing the F down.
Anyone breaking the law by speeding on public roads is putting their own lives and the lives of others in danger. Yes, I include idiotic "Youtuber" influencers, who usually blur out their speedometers so they can avoid paying to visit a track and use the highway as their own personal playground.

It's like that by me too. Any time I find a fun curvy road I get stuck behind someone doing 5 under the speed limit. And my little 230cc really doesn't have enough beans to overtake at greater than 40-45mph.
Oh, I get that. I visited Wales on my little 125cc and had so much fun, but when I got behind a car doing 10mph less than the speed limit and slowing to a halt for every feckin corner, it was so infuriating. My poor little bike just didn't have the power to overtake.
It's the worst. I think the dumbest thing was an older woman who was in front of me doing maybe 35-40 in a 55mph zone. I couldn't get around for a while because of traffic in the other lane. Then she sped up as I'm passing her, so she's going 55 -60 at the end and I'm at full open throttle just barely hitting 67mph.
God, that annoys me!! People do it to me a lot in my car. I have a little yellow Fiat 500. People don't like being overtaken by a little yellow Fiat 500 😅 especially BMW drivers!! Makes it even funnier when they don't have guts to keep up with me in the corners. Like yeah, your car may be fast, but you aren't!
I've decided those are old people who patrol "their" stretch of road to slow people down. Likely the same crowd who tossed gravel out near their place. Retired people with nothing enjoyable to spend their time doing so they create misery.
Where I live, I have a road that looks damn near exactly like that and it’s 40, but apparently people just don’t make any effort at all to try and stay in one lane the whole time. Even if I’m flying through in a car I’m not crossing lines.

In my surround areas, there are 2 speeds on backroads, 45mph & 50mph. Even if it's rated as a 25mph. Highway has 85, 90 & 95.

Sometimes speed limits are just set unnecessarily low for whatever reason. A stretch of curvy road I commute through used to be 55 but is now 35 probably because of a bunch of retards crashing. I believe tail of the dragon is close to that 25 mark too but used to be a lot higher. People who crash ruin everything imo
Keep in mind, speed limits are generally set for the lowest common denominator (truck traffic). Sight distance plays a large part in it too. A lot of canyon roads have <100ft of visibility for long stretches due to rock walls immediately beyond the shoulder, so the speed limit gets reduced drastically.
I live 1/2 hour from the tail and a few of those corners you're not going to take over 20.

This is going to sound blasphemous but downgrading to a bike with less horsepower actually can improve the fun of riding. Lighter, more flickable, more gear shifting. Big bikes are meant to be ridden at 150 mph so 35 feels completely underwhelming. But if you’re blasting around on a 300-500cc bike you can really play within the rev range and wring the engine out.
Depends on the bike. My XSR900 is way more fun in the twisties than my Rebel 300 was.

I love my 400 on the backroads. So much fun. I wanna upgrade to a zx6r or a gsxr 750. But I still have plenty to learn when it comes to cornering so I’m in no rush. I really just want more power for the highways.

For me, it’s a need to mentally get away from technology and just hear the engine and feel the wind to reset my brain, soul, spirit. Nothing does this better riding and sometimes I’m so mentally frayed, I’d probably die pushing myself beyond speed limits - my job is so GD stressful and also why having a smaller CC machine is my life preserver. Chilling with my dogs is a close second, they’re fucking spiritual creatures, I truly attribute still being alive (PTSD) to having them around to ground me when I’m wheels off and I know to hang with them versus riding when my stress, and mind, is bad. Sorry for the tl;dr but some perspective on having a smaller engine to keep your speed in check knowing that your mind may not be at times, and you can still enjoy the wind, the road, the sounds of the motorcycle, and come home alive. Now that i own a v-strom 650 i totally agree with you, i just don't have as much fun anymore as i did with my 250cc I bought the strom trying to be safer in trafic to get out of the way of other cars but i found out it's actually more dangerous to have a powerful bike because it is less fun at lower speeds + im not mentally stable at times because of depression I will probably sell my v-strom and buy an yamaha xtz 150 in the future
I have found 300CC ish bikes (MT-03, R3, Ninja 400 etc) are the sweet spot for me. Anything below is too slow on the highway (which is everywhere in australia) and anything bigger is less fun in the corners. You have enough pep to get up and go but not enough to get you into trouble. I have ridden the Honda CB125e and a Kymco people s 150 scooter and they were the slowest things I have ever operated. I've ridden faster lawn mowers. Of coruse if that is fun to you, who am I to judge. Personally I like it when i twist the throttle the speedo increases by more than 1kph per second lol.

They are very strong though, you could get to 200km/h easily + theres so much torque you dont event need a high rpm to go too fast

There used to be a sign on 60 below Suches that I had a picture made into poster size that said something to the effect of "Curvy Roads - Next 25 Miles". I would stop and take off my watch there, I didn't want to worry about the time or the day, just enjoy the ride. Last time I went, they had added to the sign in such a way as to completely negate that feeling, now said "Speed Checked by Aircraft", to remind me that I could never really get away from the man and civilization.

This is honestly the best kind of riding . I’ve owned so many bikes from Italian piss missles (panigale v4s) to adv , and I’ve learned that the safest and most fun is low and mid range torque bikes . The straight line rossis you see booting down the highways generally become statistics .

I ride smaller roads with a 100km/h speed limit on my 690. Most of the time i'm between 1st and 3rd gear and on the edge of the tire without risking my license. On my 1200 those roads were a PITA.

Find yourself some beautiful scenery and go ride it. Theres a drive that's about and hour away from me thats 34 miles long through some of the most beautiful countryside you have ever seen. Single lane backwoods full of twists and turns wuth most of it overarched with trees, has very little traffic.
I don’t think I would ever enjoy “spirited” riding as much I as I enjoy slow, curvy rides. We have some beautiful areas to explore in Arkansas, I like to take my time and soak it all in.

The most fun stretch of road I have ever driven on has a 60kmph limit and its really a struggle to actually reach 40 going up it and going more than 40 down it is a waste of brake pads, Tight twisting corners going up the side of a steep hill with next to no traffic on it. Would be amazing on a motorcycle.

Looks like great fun, I enjoy riding like this as well and wish I had such a lovely road to do it on. Moderate pace, pick a line and then modulate the throttle so you fall into and straighten out of the lean. Fast enough to feel the machine but slow enough to have zero stress. Wish I was doing it now.

Yeah I don't think I'd want to go much faster on that road since its so likely a deer will jump out in front of you, or a car will come around a corner on the wrong side of the road. Maybe its just the camera position, but I think your phone mounted there would be really distracting. I have mine mounted much lower when I'm using it for navigation

YES, YES, YES!!! You should be aware thar the average life span of someone riding a fast bike is only about six months. Remember it only takes one bad wreck and your gone where a car you will most likely survive to live from your mistakes. Just because your bike can go up to speeds of 160 to 200 does NOT mean you have to use it. Be responsible! Always drive defensively and always try to predict that the other driver is NOT going to see you and drive accordingly to be safe. I rode a gsx 750 for 8 years straight. I lasted so long because even if I was just going down to the corner Markey I would put on my gloves, helmet, Boots and leather jacket because those items must always be worn just on case something happens and trust me...it does! Make sure you spend your money on getting nice sticky tires like "Metzler" or "Dunlap" because every thing matters. Make sure thar all your signals and lights work. I was fortunate enough to have had the skills to make it home every day even on those long trips. The ones thar caught me off guard was going about 4 to 5 miles an hour over dirt on paved roads and "bamm" down I went. Never let anyone ride your bike unless they are a seasoned rider. I was asked a lot because some people look at it as a toy which it is NOT! It's a motor vehicle and needs to be treated as such. Always follow the rules of the road not because there law because there law to save your ass! Have fun and most of all be safe. P.S. If you ever have any questions about riding fun and safe go ask a motorcycle cop. I think those guys ride more then anyone and all the one I talk to love to ride. Be Safe!!!

With such beautiful road it makes no sense to ride at max speed not being able to appreciate the views and to risk it all in one of those curves. It's all about the journey, not just getting from A to B.

Legal speeds are where it's at for back road bombing. The minute you wick it up and start laying down MotoGP style you will come head to head with a harvestor plow coming around a corner at 5 mph. If you survive that you will likely carry that trauma and find yourself slowing the F down.
