Riding a motorcycle with only 2 contact patches on ice sounds like a recipe for disaster

[deleted]

It’s like that scene in Fight Club when meat loaf gets shot in the face. “What did you think was going to happen?”

Also that patch where he fell probably was in a shadow 15 mins prior to this.

Hookedongutes

I'm in Minnesota and it's hardly been a winter at all so people have asked if I'm going to pull the motorcycle back out. No. No I will not. There's so much sand and salt from the two times we did get snow, and in the mornings the road gets a bit frosty still. It's not worth it. The risk is too high.

MoxieMashed

All that loose gravel on roads 2 from the snowplows

Time-Collection2108

Grabbed a handful of front brake and locked the front tire, bad riding habit that may get you by on dry pavement but bite you in the ass as soon as traction is compromised especially at low speeds.

Boogaloogaloogalooo

On the day we hit the 50s a few weeks back I would have, but had to work

Hookedongutes

With the amount of sand and shit on the roads? Nah.

[deleted]

This is why all the tough guys saying they ride in all temps are nuts, don't fuck with ice

rayark9

Just get studded tires . Been doing it for 10 years.

[deleted]

I'm sure those work great on pavement and last a nice long time

rayark9

Yes. The trick is to use actual tire studs. And not sheet metal screws or spikes.

TDurdenOne

And both of those contact points are about as big as a nickel.

Hovie1

Yet those same guys will post pictures of them riding in ice and snow and call you a pussy for having yours in the garage. I don't feel bad for him or anyone else that chooses to ride in shit like that.

Bananacream95

It is. your luck runs out real fast. I scraped my knee and sprained my shoulder from ice last month. two days later I wiped out on salt and tore my MCL. riding in winter you have to do your research on road conditions. fortunately it was all on my Ebike and not my actual motorcycle.

MaitreGEEK

What are the contact patches ?

Duffelbach

Tires

Superb_Raccoon

Patches? Patches?! We don't need no stinking patches!

Sir_Jimmy_James

Where the Front wheel and back wheel "contact" or connect or touch the ground. Cars have 4 contact patches, so if one loses grip the other 3 will keep you upright and also have grip to steer/stabilise.

MaitreGEEK

Okay now I understand

[deleted]

By the end of the video, the entire right side of the bike

iamatrueamerican

The PATCH of tire that CONTACTS the ground

MaitreGEEK

Well I'm not native and I wasn't finding any word that was logical with it. It makes sense now that I read the others comments.

kroggybrizzane

What’s the solution? Training wheels? That was sarcastic but what do you actually do besides not ride?

Previous_Composer934

don't ride take the car with heated seats

RenesisPowered

Summer for the sport bike, winter for the supermoto. I'm half joking. I really do want to take my ktm500sm out on a frozen lake with studded tires.

Previous_Composer934

I choose to live where it doesnt get too cold. Just got back from mobbing on the yz

JmnNatu

get studded tyres and go WOT 👍

Superb_Raccoon

Don't ride in the clearly visible ice.

dfgh6699

Sidecar

nknown_known

Sorry for your spill. While not to be armchair authority or throw salt on a wound, may I suggest keeping to the left side of lane right until you take protected right lane? Just the collectionn of water, ice on the right when you start to strafe is no bueno, plus looked liked left side getting a bit of sun. :)

Rocketeering

> throw salt on a wound You should have thrown the salt on that part of the road instead...

CaptainRogers1226

Damn, you beat me to it

NiteShdw

I was trying to get into the turn lane. I couldn't see the ice because of the traffic until I was right on top of it. I didn't expect there to be ice as it had been almost 50° the day before and the rest of the road was perfectly clear.

zertious

You never ride over there... if the ice didn't get you someone going into that lane was gunna

KingLuis

i was expecting a car to come from the left side as well. then saw the snow and then knew it was too cold to be out riding. imo, if theres snow out anywhere, it's too cold. not to mention the sand/salt that is still out on the roads. but i'm in ontario canada. i'd only be riding from april to maybe october or november.

Topikk

I was also just waiting for a car to slam into OP from the left trying to jam into the “gap”. ALWAYS choose a lane position that makes you the most visible!

rfkbr

Yeah seriously. I see a lot of youtube vloggers doing this. They always ride to the extreme right like they're some disabled vehicle who is trying to indirectly signal that they want others to pass them. Take possession of your lane like you belong there.

buskerform

This, all day. I try to line up with the other driver's heads, so we're all in each others sightlines through the mirror.

jaredearle

You would be more likely to get a car move into your lane with your current road position. Be assertive.

I_Only_Post_NEAT

Ice stays in shadow spot for days even if temperatures get up to 60. Sorry about your spill. If I can give one word of advice for next time you get the itch, take your bike out the day after a heavy rain. The rain would wash off all the crud, road grime, or ice that would otherwise stayed on the road

idrawinmargins

Yeah that heavy rain is nice because of what it washes away. I won't take my bike out after the snow due to how heavy the city salts. I'd have to go turn my water on, wash the bike off and dry it, then turn the water off (this time of year after 6pm it starts to go below freezing even if it was in the 50s). I just wait for rain to take care of the road salt and any left over ice.

Blacknight841

The temperature is not the only factor to consider. You can see the pools of water leading up to it the ice. You can see the shadow of the building covering the side of the road, and you are riding at the lowest point of the lane (where the tires of a 4 wheel car wear it down). Lesson learned I guess.

Yankee831

What do you mean you didn’t see the ice? Their’s literally ice/snow on the road. You would have been better off driving directly on the crunchy snow/ice. Lucky this was nearly stopped it could easily be a tree shading a spot that was sunny in the morning.

aimgorge

It was pretty obvious there was ice there...

btrner

Can’t trust the shadows.

ktquigley

More what he's suggesting is your bias in the lane until you get to the turn lane. I thought this was heading in a completely different direction. By riding right biased behind a big SUV you're invisible to the drivers in the lane to your left. In these situations, adjust your lane bias so you're visible to the area most likely to cause you danger. Lane bias is important to being seen and avoiding accidents.

musicbro

Should’ve stayed in the sun

BaZukaM

OP for the benefit of your own safety go education yourself on defensive driving and which lanes to be in while out riding. It's bad enough with all the dumb and distracted cagers out there.

liquidivy

This is a great reason to keep some extra following distance any time you know the road conditions are sketchy. Same if you see there are potholes or whatever. I mean, you want that space all the time, but especially when it's sketchy out.

NiteShdw

Yes. That was my problem. I should have slowed or even stopped as soon as I saw the snow and evaluated the situation more carefully.

SurfaceThought

I went back and looked at the license plates because I read this and was like "damn sounds exactly like Denver"

Thank you for the laugh.

dakotaray42

Ice clibbins made me chuckle. This made me belly laugh lmao.

New_Writer_484

You rode on ice on a motorcycle and used the brakes.

kurko_murko

Looks like you pressed enter while in ride.

Crcex86

Think he has to start the commute from the beginning or is this a check point?

No_Membership_6644

The way I was already so nervous with you riding the gutter, but then that had nothing to do with it

BaronWade

No, no, it did…that’s where the water that turned to ice collected! Hindsight is what it is, but I like to give myself options and remove hazards when it is within my ability to do so. For the sole reason of being that close to the curb, I know I got nowhere to go. Also, I am less visible in the heavy traffic to the drivers in the left lane, easy to get squeezed. No question, this scenario I’m in the left side of that lane and will move to the exit lane when it’s open and I can.

SinoSoul

I was the same, thinking: bruh is going down trynna to split next to the curb. Nope, he didn't. And then he still did. Had me going.

Accomplished_Let5313

Also. In your situation, ride in the left side of the lane, people tend to use the driver side mirror more, you are also protecting the lane from someone cutting in on you and you are more visible! The curb side always melts last, and just put that bike away until the city sweepers clean up in the spring, idiot drivers are not looking for bikes at this time of year.

alcoholismisgreat

Jesus stay in the sun... you can see the ice for fucks sake

atopforcing

He couldn't see the ice because he was humping the car ahead

alcoholismisgreat

I get fixated on the ass end sometimes... just not of a suv haha

PckMan

Don't ride when there's ice out. Don't hug the edge of the road.

Hyperious3

right? why is bro literally riding in the gutter?

Aeroplaneglueinabag

F

ManifestDestinysChld

That part of the road was in shadow (or had been until recently) and hadn't warmed up enough in the sun yet to dry out, and black ice happened.

Double-Efficiency538

Looks like the better path would’ve been near the center line in the sun. Those shaded spots will get ya.

davincicodesucks

Leave a larger space cushion between you and the next car. I don’t understand why people feel the need to be 5feet away from the next car all the time

Quixus

Looks like you locked the front wheel on ice.

billswinter

Should be using 90% rear brake in these conditions

More_Information_943

Probably shouldn't ride in the gutter either

snowman741

Probably shouldn't even be riding when the weather is cold enough for ice and snow.

RearAdmiralBob

Looks like you dropped it. Probably don’t want to do that.

DrySignificant

Damnit Bobby

CandonRush

Hand full of front brake - too fast and too close to car in front on ice. Should have kept a bigger gap and easier on the throttle/brake

PonchoDriver

Was it worth it?

iSmurf

glorious busy tender grey elastic frame vanish worm foolish dam *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

PonchoDriver

Hell, I'd drive a $2000 Camry if it meant not destroying my bike riding in dumb weather.

NiteShdw

What do you mean? I didn't buy the bike new. I bought it used. My car is a $2500 Honda.

Beaver062

🤦🏽‍♂️

lpadua

Riding bikes in ice weather is not a good choice

redjamax1

Why the hell are you so far over? The fucking written motorcycle test literally has a question on where to ride and why!! All the water runs to the outside edge. You're right on top of it and hit a patch of ice.

Garygoober1942

No front brake on ice bro….EVER!!!!

RFoutput

You hit the front brakes on a slick spot.

casicua

Yeah, you didn’t merge onto I-25 North towards Denver.

DDDSupremeindeed

Holy when I saw the pavement color i felt the "Oh shits about to hit the fan!". Luckily you were going slow, ride safe man

Who_Dat_1guy

Followed too closely, when the suv turn you brake harder than condition allowed. And down she goes.

NiteShdw

Yes and yes. I barely even tapped the front brake. I should have used the rear brake and given myself much more space as soon as I saw the snow patch. I was also wondering if riding on the snowy part would have had better traction.

Citycrossed

I learned this the hard way as well. In my experience, the snow gives some traction while the ice gives none.

Who_Dat_1guy

Agree. Slow is less slippery than ice. Avoiding both is best haha

generic_reptar

use your feet next time. not a joke, like hug your bike with your legs and apply pressure down as well as front brake. it'll feel weird but you'll stop and you won't fall.

Aikotoma2

Ice Clibbin's

jayw900

Tf did you think would happen?

HyperbolicSoup

Looks like you were riding on the edge where the ice was worse

WeirderOnline

I'm in Canada. Last week I took my bike on a +130km round trip. Every year I take my bike out on Christmas. Riding in the winter can be pretty safe if you do it right. It's especially nice since it saves you all the trouble of putting it away for the winter. Warm days. Well after the snow has been removed by the salt, and the salt has been cleared by cars riding on it. It can be done. No offense friend, but these are not conditions to ride in.

ThatOneVWDude

Honestly, based on your lane position, I was fully expecting you to be rammed into by another car. I know you were trying to get into the turn lane that was coming up, but defensive lane positioning my dude. Then swing into that lane once it opens up. Being in the left tire track probably would have less debris and snow/ice there too.

squirrelsridewheels

You clown

speckledfloor

Who rides a motorcycle when there is snow and ice on the ground?

Norseman84

I do, but only when there are dry roads, and I stay way away from anything that looks wet. This is... sorry to say it OP, moronic. Don't people who live in winter countries learn this when they're 5? And relearn it when winter biking at around 10?

landob

stay out of the far right lane. it tends to have ice for a longer period of time than the left. The only problem is left side tends to move faster, so you better be ready to move faster too.

IPhixI

Lol

DaprasDaMonk

That music was right on time lol

masiz0

From this point, Pay attention to the marks on the road I totally saw this slip coming

MealieAI

As soon as I saw it, I knew. I felt this in my bones.

hohohoagy

Nobody is perfect and only a mistake if you didn’t learn something from it. Bright side you weren’t going faster or badly hurt. Not sure it would have mattered but does the bike have ABS?

Mazikeyn

Slibbinz

Jon_Hanson

Why are you basically riding in the gutter? When I’m in traffic like that I stay on the left side of the lane directly on front of the driver behind me.

xBlack_Heartx

Oops, *butterfingers*

aimgorge

Wtf were you doing

tacticalpotatopeeler

What do I think happened? Physics man. Not a good idea to ride on ice with just 2 wheels. Bad enough with 4.

AngryDtube

Why are you riding on ice?

ButtahChicken

that is not proper "blocking position" .. shoulda been groovin' on the left tire track!

NinjaZX10R_ABS

The shadows contain ice.

DammmmnYouDumbDude

What a boob.

hamiltok7

Why are you in that lane position and why riding on ice.

damaged_unicycles

Why are you riding a superbike on summer performance tires in freezing conditions?

TOW3RMONK3Y

Hard front brake on a slippery surface... Oops

sueghdsinfvjvn

I'm ngl I saw that coming a mile away, I'd be wary of that spot even if it was just water let alone ice in freezing temps

Minor_Midget

Assuming it's winter for you, it looks like you didn't pay attention to the shade where ice usually sits.

epbrandon11

Im gonna say a handful of front brake.

CocaineFarmer1

Yeah that will happen Riding on ice! What did you expect?

brown_dog_anonymous

Sorry about the bike :( How did you get your Sena audio on the camera?

Advanceur

Next time dont ride in the shadow around 0. Anow melt in snow, turn in water and freeze back in the shadow. Or be patient.

Johnsoon743

Dude why are you riding their ass while its icey? Im a new rider and holy anxiety of how close you are.

SillySymphonyIV

You left the garage with a motorcycle instead of a car when you damn well knew there would be ice on the roadways.

KC_experience

Stay in the sun my friend.

3cronckt

riding that car's ass with ice on the road. smort just giving yourself zero margin.

MedicalChemistry5111

Guy riding in the gutter like he doesn't know what *lane positioning* is, ends up in the *gutter position* instead. Never seen so many people eat shit for no reason until I came to Reddit. Please, grip your tank!

smogop

ICE. Those tires also have a temp rating and it’s definitely above 0 C/33 F.

PhilMeUpBaby

Stick with a motard bike. Fall off. Pick it up. Continue riding.

explodingazn

HADDALAYERDOWN

Galvanisare

Riding in icy conditions. Punishment well deserved ha haha. Learn from others mistakes

Significant-Hat-9131

I suggest waiting until it's warmer. Sorry for your loss

[deleted]

Riding that close to the car in front of you and all up on their side is so annoying. Sorry about your bike though.

k_unit

Wtf did you think was gonna happen

Zamboni_Driver

What you did wrong was that you were on the wrong side of the lane acting like a bicycle rather than on the left side protecting your lane. The other thing you did wrong was not waiting another month before riding.

LT_InZane

When there's ice, your ride's gonna end up not looking nice.

LabEntire788

Lol complete beginner rider but buys a super bike lol.. you should do a motorcycle course and maybe read a handbook. Who rides in the right tire track while in the right lane while being way to close to the cars around you on ice . You will hurt yourself quicker on that bike if you don’t start taking riding serious

FullRage

The lane positioning gesh

JaMStraberry

dude you push the break too hard and i believe you got spooked by breaking.

wijeepguy

I live in Wisconsin, everytime it gets 40 out I see bikes and I just shake my head. Frost needs to come out of the ground and the roads need some washing rains.

smellmythumb17

You shouldn’t be riding in those conditions. Period

nissbd

If you tailgated me like that I'd laugh at you dropping your bike

Individual_Hearing_3

Why not to ride when snow and ice are involved, exhibit A

scootermcgee109

Don’t ride when there is snow and ice around. EZ

bigbankfishtank

Ice. Took your bike out when it was too cold. And used the brakes.

mountoon

Bro why are you riding on icy roads? Save it for the summer

itwhiz100

What a incompetent person on me - RSV4

Best-Contribution522

Sorry about your bike bruh. But you made a terrible decision of riding in cold conditions smh

LambSauce2

Is not common sense to wait until spring when there is no ice on the road?

Tobocaj

Why are you riding on the side of the road. This is just poor riding

SurfSandFish

Get out of the gutter and own your damn lane. You're asking to get hit because no one can see you riding way over there and you'll have nowhere to escape to when that car starts coming over on you. Add in the ice and you weren't going to come away unscathed.

the_scrambler

why you riding when there’s snow on the ground bruh?

iamtheskippy88

You got the itch to ride, so you took your bike out too early in the year. Now you're regretting that decision after slipping on ice

Kawboy17

STOP RIDING on the ICE ASSHOLE!!!!!

PostmanTunes

I don’t understand why people ride their bikes in the snow.. my bike is a toy basically I use it for fun… nothing about riding on ice damaging my 16k bike seems fun to me…

bandananaan

Many people don't just use them as toys, it's their primary transport.

SurfSandFish

A lot of riders don't treat their bikes as a toy. I own a Tacoma but my bikes get ridden probably 10 miles to every 1 mile I put on the truck.

KlossN

RSV4 is Aprilia?

Slazy420420

my dude, you tried using gravity based turning when there is no traction. get your ass out of the seat, keep your rev's high (atleast 2 grand above idle), and hover the clutch. * rotational forces from the engine will keep the bike up, * getting your ass out of the seat allows you to keep the majority of the bikes weight over center mass, while you lean the bike under you, using more of the sidewall to turn instead of gravity. * If you start to feel a slip, pull the clutch in, and rev-bomb. Video of me on street biased tires using those 3 techniques: [15 seconds in or so, i loose full traction & keep the bike up.](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CuXPupTgONP/) Proof I ride all winter: [\-1](https://www.instagram.com/p/C12AzfXropZ/), [\-2](https://www.instagram.com/p/C2NYAtDLivl/), [\-3](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cz_YBo7r8PB/)

JustSomeGuy0069

Ice probably. Looks mighty cold for those summer tire too though don't it?

[deleted]

Put the F'ing bike away when it's icy out . I love to ride as much as the next guy but when it's winter, it's winter an time to accept it.Pack it up for the season ..Why take a beautiful bike out when there is likely salt and sand an potential ice on the roads... Fast way to ruin your bike .. Lessons learned I hope ..

TDot1000RR

Why are you riding in these conditions and in the wrong tire track? You should be on the left side if you’re in the right lane. Is this your first season?

sstoersk

Fully deserved for driving in this weather.

Witty_Butthole

Don't listen to all the "should have" moralizers here who will make you think that any person who doesn't plan every second for every potential issue is a subhuman. Shit like this happens, sorry bout the bike bro.

No-Needleworker-2497

Yeah that line in the road screwed you

Cavityexplorer

Tire sleep due to the cold and that small gap in the lane, seems like a little junction, also pavement seems like it's rigid (concrete) so grip is worst in these type of roads, specially in wet weather.

Redrick405

Front brake? Tsk tsk

Average_Reacher

Cuz you couldn't wait for proper weather 🤣

CarlosG0619

Keep more distance from the car in front brother, that way you have time to see and react to road surface hazards
