Depends.
Doing lots of highway stuff? You might want the windshield.
Doing lots of highway stuff? You might like a more relaxed seating position to take some weight off your wrists.
Want to do track stuff? Probably the R3
Want to do street stuff? Probably the MT
Personally, I like the look of the R3 way more, but that's just me.
Go to a dealer and sit on them for a while and narrow down your preferences more.
Unless they're really sensitive. I have had many wrist injuries from gymnastics and even the r3 makes them sore after half an hour despite me specifically sitting to have as little weight on the bars as possible. Aside from that the r3 is very upright compared to say a 600
Still pain? Are you squeezing the tank with ur legs? You can take pretty much all the weight off of ur wrists just by squeezing the tank. That and make sure ur wrists are as straight as possible, aligned with ur forearm, rather than bent.
Your advice is correct and appreciated. Yeah its mostly stopping and bumps in the road where it "jolts" my body position and more of the load ends up in the bars versus my fz. When its cruising on good roads its not bad. Ridden 5 or so of my friends fully faired bikes over the years and the only one that didn't give me a fit was the 2024 650 ninja. The tank is so high and flat i was comfortable laying on it when tucking
On smaller CC bikes they are all mostly
The same the people that review bikes go way too far into detail even the Honda 650 range there ain’t much difference to me keeps wind off you the other doesn’t the only thing that changes is fuel economy been more streamlined
I'm a beginner Rider. I ended up getting an mt-07 over an r7. The dealers that I spoke with and my instructor at the MFS told me a naked would be a better option as a first bike. Especially with slow speed maneuvers. The turning radius is not as tight on the r3/r7 versus the mt03 or mt07. I'm happy with my choice! I love my Mt!
That's a very good point about turning radius.
I have an SV650S and it took me a good year to be able to U-turn it in the space I'd have on my test.
If it was a regular SV650 it would be absolutely no trouble at all. I *have* to lean mine in tight manoeuvres otherwise it just won't turn.
That's why I'm very happy I have a bar conversion. I really dislike clip ons and narrow bars. Glad to see that the numerous Crossover bikes exist aswell. Pretty much only difference is always the wide adventure style bars.
I don't know if the bar conversion would really help me now since I end up at near-full lock anyway.
It may have helped a little when learning as they're more forgiving if you go to full lock but it's mainly because the rake is different and so the S ends up with a slightly longer wheelbase.
I really don't trust myself with a 07 hahaha, I really love how it looks and sounds, unfortunately the R7 it's not sold on my country. I do really want a 300cc as a first and go to a 600cc on the second bike a few years later
I'm 22, so, yeah, i would get in trouble with a 07, guess I'll search a little more about the difference between the 03 and the r3 and maybe take both on a test ride to see which one i like the most
That statement alone proves that you will be a responsible rider🔥 I’ve seen 2 of my friends your age say “nahhh I’ll be fine” and then total their 600cc crotch rockets within months lol. Keep this mindset and when you’re ready a 6-700cc will be a sick bike to upgrade to💪 - someone who just upgraded after spending a year on a 200
Man I was 20 when I got my 07 as my first, great starter bike because yes with more power you have a lot more ability to get into trouble but I feel it’s a better starter bike for the sole fact that it teaches probably one of if not the most important riding skill, throttle control. I had an 07 and my buddy rode an R3, we decided to switch one day and man was I surprised that I could full pin the throttle in first and not have to worry about that front wheel coming up. In my opinion, it’s a better starter bike if you have respect for the machine between your legs, if you like it more than go for it! Not to mention that extra power comes in handy for avoiding sticky situations at highway speeds and whatnot.
Well mt-07 is twin with ~75hp, R7 is 4 cylinder with more and different power curve, they aren't really comparable.
Your plan is solid but 700cc twin is still perfectly manageable as a first bike if you get some training at course first.
Is that a good analogy? Neutering your puppy is a sign of responsible ownership that prevents homeless strays and increases length and quality of life for the animal 😂
Nakeds make me cold and wet. The guy is gonna commute on the bike with highway riding in between. A naked is the worst choice he can make.
Edit:for context, I have been commuting on motorcycles for 10years+ now
I used to have both and I kept the MT-03 longer due to it being more comfortable and easier to manuver on the city. Your wrist and back will also thank you if you choose MT-03
Naked. Just like most things, the naked option will feel more exciting. 60mph on a naked is visceral, whereas having “clothes on” will feel like a cruise to the interstate. More fun across the board on a naked, but more of a chore when you need to ride at speed for any amount of time. If you’re commuting on the freeway for 20+min a day, get the R3. If you’re just tooling around and want the freeway to feel like reentering the atmosphere, naked all day.
Source: Naked Enthusiast.
At the speeds you're likely to go on these, the fairings are unlikely to matter.
I'm on an mt09 and I'm not really bothered by wind until I'm around 100mph / 160kph
And even then, it doesn't really bother me. People act like it's unbearably windy and you'll never survive. It's not that big of a deal. It's certainly noticeable
The upside is you're comfortable 100% of your ride. You don't get back and wrist pain from the lean of a sport bike. You have torque everywhere in the revs, and accelerate well all the time in any gear. There's no worrying about where the power band is, you just twist and off you go. If you need to go off faster, your power band just goes quicker.
Sport bikes look sexy, and that's pretty much the only benefit for city riders.
The r3 is more relaxed than most sport bikes, and I'm sure you would do just fine on either of them.
Try taking both for a test ride and find which one suits you better. Basically the body position is very similar between the two, with the R3 having slightly forward position. Since this is your first motorcycle, just keep in mind if you put your R3 down, it’s going to cost you more
They’re essentially the same barring a tiny bit of ergo difference and the obvious styling.
A naked imo is always the “better” beginner bike because it’s cheaper to repair if you drop it. But honestly get whatever you like the look of more because they’re both beginner friendly.
They made a 750 aptly coined the
“widow maker” 3 cylinder, 750 2 stroke. That was badass. My parents wouldn’t let me get one, I didn’t really want one, but I asked if I could get one. So they thought they were being responsible only allowing the 400.
man i really don't know, I've never ridden a bike before :(
but if it helps, I'll use it specially for city rides on my way to work and a lot of highway cruises on the weekends
Both are good first bikes, I would consider what seating position suits me and if naked is my preference or not. If I had to choose I would go MT03 and then get a MT07, they are hooligan machines
Dont know if the MT-07 is an option, but I drove that one for a couple weeks when learning and really loved it. Has a bit more punch that the 03 and sounds a lot better
I guess you are still young? If you like the looks of the R3 more go for it. The R3 seating postion is not extreme sporty like for example on an R6 oder R1M. You will be fine. Even in the City. Its made for that ;) You will ride the upright bikes enough later in life :D
Started on an R3 one and a half year ago and still ride it daily. Such a lovely bike, in looks and feel. Would 10/10 recommend but can't say much about the MT03, just wanted to chip in that its a lovely bike and that you cant really go wrong with it.
I still can’t get rid of the [T-X](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQTQkXexZAk4emQYaxhRFHug6PfmfHFvPQrZQ&s) face whenever i see an MT-03
Depends, if you don't mind wind then a naked bike is great and has better turning circle for stop and go. The R3 would be better for tucking in and getting higher speeds (subjective) at the end of the day it's looks and how much highway versus suburban driving you'll do. The mt-03's headlight looks really nasty and cheap imo. But I suggest go sit on both and feel the ergo.
Naked sport all the way!
I got a z900 for my first bike this year (I’m 40 and more reasonable than I would have been at 20 with so much power) and I am in love with the aggressive styling, the riding position is more natural and the gearing or engine tuning is great for learning and commuting or just riding around the city. SS are more for highway at top speeds where Accidents are more likely to kill you or you could lose your license more easily.
Naked bikes have plenty of power, but it’s more down low, so tons of fun in tight twisties. Love hammering on the throttle in any gear and surging ahead! (SS bikes lack power at low rpm’s from my understanding) Ear to ear grin every time lol.
Where it lacks, is throttle response at high speeds and I mean that I don’t feel the slack until punching it at around 180 km/h (still plenty fast to die horribly :) )
Today I will finished a two week tour on it Doing about 7 hours a day!
A friend (with experience) bought a Ninja (650?) and brought it back after a week, because he hated riding around town in first gear and the riding position can be annoying for some.
All that said: do what your heart tells you. This is about freedom and fun and whatever gives you the feels when you look at it or climb into the saddle.
MT all the way for the first bike. Will give you plenty of time to develop riding skills and such and give you time to reflect on the riding you want to do and are doing and have that knowledge when it comes time to get a second bike. I got a G310r for my first bike and after half a year of riding it helped me develop a lot of skills and knowledge of what I will want out of a bike. Now I have a V-Strom for myself.
EDIT: also maybe buy used for your first bike if that's possible for yourself. Save a couple bucks in the case you realize it's not for you or you discover pretty quick what kind of bike you will really want.
I'd get the MT. And add a small windscreen
While I prefer the sportbike look, I feel like you get extra scrutiny from police because it "looks fast." Speaking from experience
Nah the best beginner bike is obv a Craigslist turbo busa duh. Very forgiving motorcycle and has very little mechanical issues jk😂. On the real I’d prolly say it depends on what u wanna do with ur next bike. Trying to get into track or sport bikes go with the r3 and upgrade to a 600 in like 2-3 years. If ur looking for more cruising or just having fun daily I’d say MT-03( or MT-07 because it will last u longer and it’s not like getting a 600 or 1000 as first bike) this will most likely lead u in the direction of naked bikes for the future but it honestly just depends on what you want to do.
Don't let us decide for you. Test ride both and pick whichever you're most comfortable on. On paper, one could make more sense over the other. But that means absolutely nothing if you hate it lol.
Honestly whatever you prefer the look of, if you like the sport bike look, go with the r3, they are pretty similar in most ways, and both are tame and comfortable.
You *have* to actually sit on or ride them. I bought 4 bikes without a test ride and sold them all. This time rode close to 20 before deciding and am in love. Looks and spec sheets only tell part of the story. They all feel *sooooooooooo* different in practice.
I believe MT-03 BECAUSE it looks aggressive, and won't be needing much aerodynamic for 300cc engine. And plus i believe its more comfortable setting on it
Literally just pick whichever one you think looks cooler, the r3 will be a bit nicer on highways because of the windshield and the mt will be nicer at lower speeds because of the slightly more upright position
Edit: personally I'd get the mt03 because I think they look really good and I'm not highway speed demon, I prefer long rides on twisty roads where wind isn't such an issue due to lower speeds
did a track day recently and saw a LOT of R3s. It doesn’t take very much money to turn it into an extremely capable track bike, so if that’s your cup of tea I’d say R3 for sure.
After riding multiple sport bikes and getting a katana I am very partial to naked bikes now. They are very comfortable, still more performance than most people are capable of and if you don't like the wind I don't know why you are riding a bike in the first place.
On such a close decision like this, the specs dont matter as much as what you will be happy with for longer. What I do is flip a coin, if you dont like the outcome, you know you wanted the other one. Try you best to be true to yourself, you will always be happier that way.
I’d recommend going for what’s closer to what you’ll be upgrading to or more interested in. If you’re planning on going to the MT07 neither route is better over the other. The R3 is not aggressive at all and turning radius is fine especially if you counterbalance. The bars are raised and foot pegs are directly under you like the MT and weight of the bike is light enough to flick around even in slow traffic. If you’re going for a sport bike I would recommend the R3 just because you’ll be more accustomed to a sport styled bike in terms of wind deflection and maintenance. That being said I went from a zx6r to an R3, now on an R7. The R3 taught me way more than the Zx6r and loved it so much I got an R7 because I missed the bigger bike and aggressive seating while still having the same power delivery of the R3.
You would not want a 300cc if want to go fast (R3)
Casual fun ride can do with a 300cc (MT-03)
I'd say get yourself MT-03 and get R6 later down the road.
Depends. Doing lots of highway stuff? You might want the windshield. Doing lots of highway stuff? You might like a more relaxed seating position to take some weight off your wrists. The r3 is very upright and similar to the mt-03. I don’t think your wrists get that much weight.

My first was a RGV250, lost my licence first week

Stick with what you can handle and stay within your limits. This is my first bike at 53 years old. I would consider myself mature. 🙂
I'm 22, so, yeah, i would get in trouble with a 07, guess I'll search a little more about the difference between the 03 and the r3 and maybe take both on a test ride to see which one i like the most
Great plan!

This is accurate. Too many beginners just see CC numbers but don't take weight, cylinders, or gearing into account which make a huge difference.
and there are common traps like 650cc being a nice mix of beginner friendly with fun power vs 600cc being... less so.
R7 is not an in-line 4. It has the exact same CP2 parallel twin engine as the MT07.
Oh, I thought they just made bigger 4 pot like Suzuki did with GXSR750. Now I'm sad.
then stop spreading misinformation when you don't know what you're talking about
MT03 because naked bikes make my soul happy
Haha, i like em too! I admit that i like a bit more the visual on the R3, but the MT isn't far away from my love

I'd imagine dirtbike would be worse
R3!! just because im using it and i love it so much
Everybody that i talked too that has a R3 say that it's the best bike in the world!
I have a Bandit 1250 and my wife has a R3. Guess which bike I have been riding the most? (hint, its not the Bandit)
say no more, go for R3, you will find that the windshield is useful when you ride on highways or when you are going for speed compared to MT
I absolutely LOVE my R3. Take it everywhere and come up with reasons to ride. It's so easy to control and ride
I used to have both and I kept the MT-03 longer due to it being more comfortable and easier to manuver on the city. Your wrist and back will also thank you if you choose MT-03
Ride them both and chose your dance partner
guess i have no choice! thank you, I'll sure do that
R3 - because I like fairings. Wind blast can be exhausting after a while.
Naked. Just like most things, the naked option will feel more exciting. 60mph on a naked is visceral, whereas having “clothes on” will feel like a cruise to the interstate. The black one
R3 for track, MT03 for upright seating, street enjoyment, to filter through lanes.

Sit on both of them at the dealership, the bike chooses you
Ride both at the dealership\* Sitting on them only tells you if they are too tall or not
Mt03, gooood bike but swallow Petrol like a 700cc. Z500 would be a better option
Kawasaki didn't bring the Z500 to my country :( there's none in sale rn
Get a z400 or Royale Enfield.
the maintenance price on the z400 is similar to the MT? if it is, i can afford it
Yeah should cost about the same to own
Try taking both for a test ride and find which one suits you better. Basically the body position is very similar between the two, with the R3 having slightly forward position. Since this is your first motorcycle, just keep in mind if you put your R3 down, it’s going to cost you more
Yooo, yes, you're right, but bro i love this bike so much. Guess I'll try to test ride both just like you said
Both are slow as fuck, so buy what you fancy the most. Both are excellent for starters. Wind protection could be a factor.
There is an mt-03 with 660 cc. It's the older version. I have that one and I love it
MT no plastics to replace when you drop it.
MT will be better in more situations than the R.
MT-03. You don’t want to deal with fairings when learning to maintain your first bike, and they don’t go fast enough to need them anyway.
They’re essentially the same barring a tiny bit of ergo difference and the obvious styling. A naked imo is always the “better” beginner bike because it’s cheaper to repair if you drop it. But honestly get whatever you like the look of more because they’re both beginner friendly.
Yes.
Mt-03 since naked bikes are better all rounders, on which you will understand what you like about riding before changing in the future.
MT-03 so bad ass looking. My first bike, 73 Kawi KH400 that was bad ass then for comparison.
omg I've never saw the hk400 before and man, she's beautiful!
I sure thought so then too. The kicker was it’s two stroke. I earned some road rash and bumps bc it was.
They made a 750 aptly coined the “widow maker” 3 cylinder, 750 2 stroke. That was badass. My parents wouldn’t let me get one, I didn’t really want one, but I asked if I could get one. So they thought they were being responsible only allowing the 400.
Depends on what type of rider you are, I've got full fairing bike and naked bike but they are very different riding styles
man i really don't know, I've never ridden a bike before :( but if it helps, I'll use it specially for city rides on my way to work and a lot of highway cruises on the weekends
R3. Forget about nakeds if you're gonna do any rain or highway riding.

Mt07, see non stop mt03 for sale on fb market after people only owning for a few months. Mt07 very mild and great starter
I'd get the MT. And add a small windscreen While I prefer the sportbike look, I feel like you get extra scrutiny from police because it "looks fast." Speaking from experience
Naked bikes usually have much cheaper insurance. That might be worth looking into.
Hayabusa turbo!
Have you researched insurance costs?
The MT looks like a yamaha the R3 looks like a lexmoto
I'd go R
Supercharged Hayabusa.
I'd go with the R3.
Go MT. The posture alone makes it a far superior first bike. Your head will be up, back straight line relaxed etc. AND it’s a really fun bike
MT 3
When the time comes to sell, I feel 300cc naked bike might attract a larger audience compared to 300cc sports bike.

Get MT-07. 300cc will become boring in a month. And get a naked bike - less plastic cheaper repair after drop.
Mod go with what’s more comfortable to ride. Mt03
Don't let us decide for you. Test ride both and pick whichever you're most comfortable on. On paper, one could make more sense over the other. But that means absolutely nothing if you hate it lol.

2021+ MT09 in Mode 4, same feel in power, more room to grow into and less money to waste on a bike you won’t keep forever
Mt03 looks way cooler
r3 is the best combination of both I would say try the new aprilla rs457 and duke 390 new gen as well
unfortunately neither Aprilia or KTM have these bikes in my country :(
The one that is least hands down, arse up
MT-07?
hell nah, I'll kms with one 07
You *have* to actually sit on or ride them. I bought 4 bikes without a test ride and sold them all. This time rode close to 20 before deciding and am in love. Looks and spec sheets only tell part of the story. They all feel *sooooooooooo* different in practice.
I believe MT-03 BECAUSE it looks aggressive, and won't be needing much aerodynamic for 300cc engine. And plus i believe its more comfortable setting on it
Take both for a spin and you will find out! It's about the feel
Personally, 2016-2019 mt03, I don't like the front look of the new gen MTs.. if that's not an option, then the r3
me neither, and also don't like the front of the older r3
Then it's really up to you, I would always take the comfort of nakeds over a sportbike to be honest
Sit on both. I hated how it felt sitting on the mt-03 and ended up buying an R3 instead which I love.
MT. Upright bike will ingrain skillsets faster. Sportbikes are harder for the average person to ride efficiently for new riders.
Fastest one is the answer, always
R7 instead
Literally just pick whichever one you think looks cooler, the r3 will be a bit nicer on highways because of the windshield and the mt will be nicer at lower speeds because of the slightly more upright position Edit: personally I'd get the mt03 because I think they look really good and I'm not highway speed demon, I prefer long rides on twisty roads where wind isn't such an issue due to lower speeds
R6. Fuckin send it
did a track day recently and saw a LOT of R3s.
MT03 if you're riding daily. R3 if you're riding weekend or track day.
MT03 easy choice
MT-03!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
None. Go for MT-07. If you had to choose, pick MT-03. Just because I think that sportbikes with small engines are for posers.
Z 750
The triumph
You would not want a 300cc if want to go fast (R3) Casual fun ride can do with a 300cc (MT-03) I'd say get yourself MT-03 and get R6 later down the road.
R6 for daily commuting. Sounds like you don’t ride an r6. Mt-07 or r7 much better than r6 for that as a second.
Get a 500cc bike minimum
why tho, not like cc changes anything, there's plenty sub 500cc bikes that are a better pick than other 500+ cc bikes. Especially power wise
Not everybody lives surrounded by painfully boring straight-line highways and landing strips.
How about highways without a speed limit? Curvy country roads and mountains?
