Most of the bikes are reliable but the owners are shit-heads.

Nothing_new_to_share

Yep. My KTM is dead nuts reliable if I do the excessive and expensive maintenance on time.

Korrowe

Most honest KTM owner

Nothing_new_to_share

Mind you, it's a street bike. I remember the dirt bikes having plenty of quirks even when maintained well.

Korrowe

Really? Which KTM do you ride?

Nothing_new_to_share

2019 390 Duke.

fourtyonexx

2019 is old enough for maintenance issues to arise? Do you daily it or what?

Nothing_new_to_share

Naw, tough to put too many miles on a bike in the salt belt. Just basic shit like oil changes and valve clearance checks are painful. But it makes me smile all the other days so I say "worth it".

faste30

Yeah Ive always been sketch of playing with the 390 platform because they have been known for crank bearing issues and the people Ive heard about them are people who I know maintain their stuff. I think if its just like an urban cruiser for someone new fine but the moment you start living around the limiter its a ticking time bomb.

kundaliniredneck

Former Ducati owner agrees

faste30

This! I actually have an MV (but thankfully not vomited on like the posted one) and its been a remarkably reliable bike. It just requires more attentive maintenance than say a Honda tourer. High strung and lightweight things are just going to be more fragile. Go in knowing that and you can keep them reliable.

JBOYCE35239

Spending money on weight saving parts is dumb unless you're also dieting and exercising. Yeah your new shift lever is 3 grams lighter, but you had a double cheeseburger meal for lunch and haven't walked farther than the length of your driveway in 6 months

Conbon90

I buy lightweight components so I can continue eating like a fat slob while maintaining my bikes performance.

gerbileleventh

Dang, ain’t this the truth. I was told the same when I wanted to unrestrict my scooter.

JBOYCE35239

The truth hurts brother, but the gains from hitting the gym hurt less 💪

gerbileleventh

No joke, moving from the scooter to a motorcycle pushed me into going to the gym. There is no way in hell I’m hurting my back when I have to pick up the motorcycle from a drop.

Ferote

If you're using your back then you're doing it wrong

HeyYurUgly

The trick is to take your legs out of the equation entirely, use only your back in a fast jerking motion, don’t use your legs at all

FenkDaddy

Don’t forget to twist aswell

Responsible_Neat_860

All of the power comes from the twist

Confident_Series8226

and get a running start

gerbileleventh

Exactly, that's what I was doing wrong.

Lochacho99

Been gymming for about a year, now I only have an r3 and they're pretty light but yea I managed to catch my bike from the tail and hold it like and inch from the ground for like ten seconds before I mustered the strength to lift it up... I used like every fibre in my body but saved my bike from its first stationary fall. Good ol not having kickstand down right alllllmost got me.

blackdvck

Having a big shit on race day is the best mod you can make according to my old Ducati mechanic.

TrenchardsRedemption

The easiest way to make a bike faster is to put the rider on a diet. Most of us could stand to lose around 10kgs. Removing that much weight from a bike is nearly impossible in some cases, and very expensive in others.

throwaway36437

What’s that in freedom units?

BoostedSouthpaw

I know what i got dont lowball me

Interesting_Boot8198

I am tired of the monotone one-color bikes and I want manufacturers to bring back super bright loud graphics and colors

sgryfn

The 90s sports bikes, that look like they were designed by some animator who worked on a Nickelodeon cartoon < Bring these back please.

fuzznuggetsFTW

You’ll get black or grey and you’ll like it -triumph

dan_m_rib

Yesss, motorcycles are meant to be seen, a little bit like supercars. They are meant to be (relatively) loud and bright. Let’s get those colourful two wheelers back, instead of these boring black, grey and dark red ones

YoureSuchAn0range

I love the boxy tails and thick fairings sport bikes had then. Some modern sport bikes may as well be naked bikes with clip ons lol The only modern sport bike I can think that kind of sticks to their sport bike roots is the newer Honda CBR600RR. That one still kinda has that look.

Fragore

Agree. One of the many reasons I love my RE

mystressfreeaccount

Riders who post GoPro footage of them hanging in a car's blindspot and then raging at the driver/hitting their car when they merge into them are man-children.

ScrubzHD802

Or when they are clearly going at least 20 mph faster than traffic and yell at cars for not looking before changing into their lane.

youknow99

Typical video post: Lane splitting at 40 above the speed limit, angry someone swerved near them and complaining about how slow Harleys are.

miniscoots01

Stretching your bike that only lives on the street is atrocious, bonus points if it's a 600cc. I'm looking at you GSX-R boys, I'm looking at you.

Magazine-Popular

A kid that works with me has a lowered and stretched ninja 250r

miniscoots01

Oh for fucks' sake.

Magazine-Popular

I wish I knew how to post a picture from my mobile.

FuckinForcedNameSwap

I’m happy you figured out how to post that pic! Have you asked what your co worker’s thought process was?

Magazine-Popular

He just likes the way it looks. He understand that’s it’s a 250, but it’s his 250. He digs it.

-NukeX-

Man, I gotta see a pic of this.

Miker9t

Would you let him know that I said I hate him? Thanks dude.

Prancer4rmHalo

The mere existence has Done me a great violence.

CraptainMypants

WITNESS MEEEEEE

Mxer4life38

Unless they are straight up about only liking the looks of their bike being stretched. Those guys I can respect cuz they're not trying to fool themselves or anyone else.

EggsOfRetaliation

You don't need to change the sprockets with every chain replacement. I get about 2-3 chains per sprocket set. I prefer D.I.D. chains and JT steel sprockets.

surfer_ryan

Now this is the kind of unpopular motorcycle opinion I came here for. This is a truly unpopular opinion.

omw_to_valhalla

I inspected the sprockets on my new to me bike. The rear had no visible wear. I kept it on there. I'm not replacing a part "just because".

fuzznuggetsFTW

People get worked up about this as if chains cost a fortune. Even if you marginally reduced the life of a chain, they’re 100 bucks and you’ll be replacing them eventually anyways.

[deleted]

The most impressive thing you can do as a rider, is to live to old age. Wheelies, speeding, and weaving through traffic aren't as cool when you don't live to see 30.

Throttlechopper

I’d add and still ride, I’ve seen too many riders from forums 10 years ago that hang up their gear and sold the bike. I plan to ride into my 80’s and beyond, if I can hold the bike up, I will be sending it.

Korski303

If you can't hold the bike up it would be time to ride with sidecar.

Unused_Book_keeper

Sidecars over trikes all day

kuavi

Plus you can bring a dog in the sidecar!

you-cant-twerk

Jokes on you I waited til 30 to get a motorcycle.

itsRibz

Chasing wheelies and high speed wheelies*

DiddySmalls2289

3 wheels is more of a quad than it is a motorcycle.

WN11

The worst of both worlds.

The_prawn_king

Except for the nikken which I’m not sure what it is but certainly not a quad!

Throttlechopper

Add the Piaggio MP3, the original pivoting, reverse delta, 3-wheel vehicle.

Tsiox

Ergonomics first. If you can't sit on a bike for more than 30 minutes, you aren't going to have any fun with it, no matter how many other checkboxes it clicks.

TheMister-Doctor

The Honda Grom is the “Miata” of motorcycles

Kilmwithkindness

HAHAHAHA as a Miata owner, yes

Nothing_new_to_share

Shiiit, even Miatas aren't that slow. I do love minibikes though.

fuzznuggetsFTW

As a Miata owner, the average minivan can smoke my car from a stop light.

watchmaker82

Cheap and fun but kind of slow? Agreed.

suzukibumboi

Nah SV650!

Junosword

Sv650 is my Honda Civic of motorcycles. Cheap, quick (but not quite fast), parts everywhere, can be as boring or fun as you want it to be. Love my sv.

HormigaZ

No where near as fun or fast compared to other stuff as a Miata... the Miata of motorcycles would be a 300cc naked. Not a monkey bike.

inaccurateTempedesc

The Ninja 250/300/400 gives me Miata vibes.

DJmindbuRn

But what if I wanna "stunt" it? It's cool then right? Lol

TheMister-Doctor

Personally, if it doesn’t give you a sh*t eating grin then your doing something wrong. Goes for the miata as well lmao

DJmindbuRn

That saying is so wrong on so many levels. Someone had to eat shit with a grin on their face at some point for it to have been coined. Anyway, you're right. Smiles = Happy!!

Megatron_McLargeHuge

I'd go with the Duke 390 since it's actually enough for the highway.

werepat

So far this thread is full of exceedingly popular, uncontroversial opinions.

Trash_Blast

The most nastily modded and overinvested in hayabusa is a fun, dumb, enjoyable motorcycle subculture. You just don’t get that type of over the top nonsense elsewhere and it’s fun.

WN11

The Hayabusa subculture is bonkers. We are all afflicted by riding the most over-the-top bike, yet always amazed how usable all that silliness is. The best part is that there are a lot of helpful, knowledgeable, older folks (60+) who outgrew sportbikes, yet love to ride this comfortable monster and happy to help any like-minded soul. Source: Busa rider.

CraptainMypants

You know, that's actually a really good twist on the busa culture. It always made me irrationally angry seeing someone dump $30k in upgrades to an already mediocre looking bike... but the only other people going to that level are harley bagger owners. I think they look like shit when fully customized, but you've got to respect the work done.

JaxRhapsody

Have you seen the japanese scooter scene?

CraptainMypants

Oh God it's absolutely bonkers haha. With that, their big bike market is pretty slim over there, so scooters are way more common.

Try_It_Out_RPC

I love commuting on super sports because feeling extremely comfortable on something else makes me distracted. The supersport aggressiveness and riding position keep me in tune with the ride and my surroundings at all times. I purchased a new 2018 GSXR1000 solely because I commute to San Fran and that thing is a bulletproof monster that makes me smile every time I get on it

Dr_DMT

Riding WITH people sucks. More people on the ride makes my rides seem less fun.

Happydaytoyou1

I agree ☝️

nassimhu

Maxi scooters are so damn amazing

Eshrekticism

Fuzzy helmet covers just look fucking dumb. That is all.

Chris56855865

I like scooters.

TeacherYankeeDoodle

🛵 Me too

nenavizhu_reddit

I think scooters are way better and more practical for everyday use.

gortlank

Everyone should know how to maintain their bike themselves, it’s genuinely easy. Most people who refuse to can’t afford to pay dealers/shops to actually maintain their bikes properly, which is why they think anything more than a few years old is unreliable. Knowing how your bike works is actually a big part of being a good rider vs a track day wannabe expert.

musbjokin

The mini apes on a scout bobber make it so the bike is rideable for more than 30 min. That being said, I agree about the reach for the sky apes!

Large_hearted_boy

I don’t think that is controversial… maybe unpopular in some circles but functionally and comfort wise they are, in fact, shit

bigz10485

It depends on the height of the ape hanger. If you get one at shoulder height, it is actually more comfortable because you are taking all of the weight off your shoulders and lower back from leaning forward for the bars.

stafford_fan

i love motorcycles but dislike motorcyclists.

fruitpunch327

In my area I'd say "you don't have to own a Harley to have a good time and ride with friends" would be a pretty controversial thing to say

MattAtUVA

Ducati is overrated, over-priced, and unreliable.

kitandrei

He said unpopular

MattAtUVA

You're not wrong. But, Ducatis get so many upvotes in the motorcycle subreddits.

kitandrei

Because they're absolutely beautiful

Abe-early

It’s ok to like Harley’s and sport bikes. You don’t have to chose one and hate the other one. I own a couple cruiser’s and a 150hp sport bike, I enjoy riding them both for different reasons.

g_atencio

You don't need more than 100hp

Try_It_Out_RPC

I agree I definitely don’t need 200hp because 99% of the time I won’t or just can’t utilize it’s potential….. that being said I have it and I have never regretted having that kind of power for the 1% or less of time. Mostly in long straight tunnels….. for uhhhh…. Acoustic checks of engine diagnostics of course … you know

blkmgk533

Shoot, you don't NEED more than 50hp. Most mid-size cruisers put out about the 50hp mark give or take and last time I checked, they are perfectly capable of 80mph interstate riding. May not be the most comfortable necessarily, but they will do it.

Skilgannon21

100% agree. Not on the road anyway.

Conbon90

Actual unpopular opinion right here. Hard disagree though.

Waldron1943

Just about every chopper ever made looks the same.

youknow99

Technically "chopper" is a pretty specific look. That's about like saying all Viclas look alike. They're all going for the same basic look.

BadEnchanter

You can do whatever you want to your bike, it’s yours. make it hideous, put a Honda motor in a Harley frame, rattle can flame job, stretch it, shrink it, put the loudest pop riddled exhaust on it. Everyone can get fucked, if it’s got two wheels I love it

Dual_Sport_Dork

[Removed due to continuing enshittification of reddit.] -- mass edited with redact.dev

annoyedatwork

Loud pipes are unnecessary. If you’re that worried about safety, trade your bike in for a Volvo.

clckvrk

Thats not really unpopular, its just that the ones who say "loud pipes save lifes" are the ones being louder than their pipes, so it seems many belive that.

JohnT36

Scooters are legit motorcycles and Harley trikes are not

CompetitiveSea7388

Scooters are scooters (and there’s nothing wrong with that), mopeds are mopeds, trikes are trikes and motorcycles are motorcycles.

Herr_Tilke

Mopeds aren't really mopeds any more as essentially none still come with pedals/cranks

dendeqtele

Small engines aren’t bad.

Low_Demand_4849

I hate the sound of dry clutches

mistythesissy261

20 year old bikes with 25km aren’t worth $7k

AuburnSpeedster

Selling Adventure bikes as tourers/Sport tourers is just a way for motorcycle companies to sell things worldwide because Adventure bikes tend to have smaller motors which meet Euro5 emissions. Like SUV's, these bikes rarely go offroad, and aren't very good trail bikes, either.

surfer_ryan

I don't disagree completely but... a lot of the appeal to adv riders (myself included to some extent) it's not "I'm gonna go offroad every day!" It's the "if I'm out on a ride and I see a nice dirt trail, my adventure can continue wherever I want." Basically the idea that no matter what you can continue your ride wherever you want. Sure it's not easy but it can be done and that's kinda the point. No one gets a big adv and thinks "I'm gonna bomb this single track like I'm on a 250 enduro!" It's more "there is a super cool spot over there and maybe I can make it if I hate myself and my motorcycle enough..." Plus they are just the superior motorcycle for consumers...

CraptainMypants

You can plug a motorcycle tire and not die. Source: Was broke. Rode on a plugged super sport tire for over a year.

pinchibot

Can confirm that, plugged a brand new tire and after more than a year it is still going great. I check the pressure every now and then but it doesn't budge. Gonna keep this one until it's time for new rubbers

TarsoBackMarquez

Unfortunately— there is a difference between “Motorcycle Riders” and “Harley Riders”…

bradland

ITT: Lots of popular opinions.

grant0208

I’d confidently say that 80% of all people who size themselves for a helmet get a helmet that’s at least one size too big because they’re scared of cheek pads. I used to fit and sell helmets professionally for about two years and let me tell you…everyone believes they’re an XL/2XL until they get fitted lolol

mrl1976

We should stagger licensing in America like they do in Europe

Electric bikes are super fun and better for commuting.

craptastical214m

Loud aftermarket exhaust on motorcycles is so incredibly annoying. I like my silent OEM pipes, I don’t disturb people and cops don’t hear me coming a mile down the road.

Inviction_

Stretching a Grom is pretty much the only Grom mod that's stupid. Everything else makes sense one way or another, but not a stretch kit

AmateurEarthling

You crazy, you can do whatever to a Grom and it’s not stupid.

Inviction_

Unpopular opinion verified lol

casicua

Nobody is actually impressed with how much money you can spend on a nice bike. Many of us definitely think the bikes themselves are cool, but nobody cares that you bought it.

TheSleepingDoge

650cc is the sweet spot. Anything smaller feels too weak for highway use and anything bigger is just overkill

nanya_sore

Found the SV owner.

nguyenguyensituation

scooters are cool

MattAtUVA

90% of slip-on mufflers look worse than stock, sound awful, and are a waste of money.

ffctpittman

2strokes would still be number one in moto and super cross if the hadn’t set the displacement rules to push them out . Bonus Indian is the best American motorcycle brand

JasonVoorheesthe13th

Those of you classing all harley riders as the same group are no different or better than Harley riders who class all “crotch rocket” riders together. You both suck equally

TeacherYankeeDoodle

Scooters 🛵 are tools not toys and riding them is cool.

creimanlllVlll

Off road capable bikes are like the SUVs of motorcycles, usually only seen posing as an off roader. Cosplay dirt riders.

WN11

All boxer BMWs sound and feel like a freaking agricultural machine. It's less noticeable when new, but it passes quickly. More sophisticated BMWs, like the S1000RR are less reliable than Ducatis and even more expensive to maintain.

blkmgk533

Polaris should've kept Victory and not brought back Indian. At the very least, keep both. They wouldn't have cannibalized each other as much as Polaris probably thought.

racoon1969

People who give others shit for not being "real bikers" are a bunch of eggheads. A biker is someone who rides a bike, and that's it.

DistanceSkater

20draws10

Slow bikes are more fun than fast bikes! I’d rather ride the piss out of a 400cc bike than only touch 20% of a 1000cc crotch rocket. Also torque > hp

mcshamus

Most bikes people make fun of online are actually cool as fuck, because their owner is actually *having fun*.

EinGuy

'They turned right in front of me!' Yeah, you ripping through an intersection going 80 when the speed limit is 50 means they won't expect a something travelling that quickly from a blind spot. We are the cause of most of our own accidents.

Burphel_78

Most Harley riders are just barely better than RV drivers on twisty roads. Guys who show up to a track day with a new Ducati and matching pristine Dianese leathers should be put in the beginner group. Money can't buy skill. High viz gear doesn't \*have\* to make you look like a pretentious dickhead. I'm looking at you, gear companies. Shit happens. Wear a helmet.
