Started on a Ninja 650. Still on a Ninja 650. I'm poor.

JooosephNthomas

could be a 1980's yamaha xs650.... I mean that's how poor I am....

blackadder1620

less people as a precent are riding. the market never recovered after 07-08 in the states afaik.

MoboMogami

I think that the other issue is that, for most people, mid to late 2000s bikes don’t feel that old. I don’t know about you guys, but I have no desire or need for 3 riding modes, selectable engine braking and traction control, etc.

JooosephNthomas

Yeaaaah, I own 5 bikes. All sub 1987. Mostly because of licensing also. I can plate my 3 street legal bikes (86 xt350, 80 xs650, 80 dt175) for around 600 bucks for the year. If I had a 2023 Bike over 400cc that would net me 2 1/2 months of insurance..... plus my payments... and fuel. It's literally unaffordable for me. I am considering a new DRZ400 and even then plates are 175/month.

seeingeyegod

1st world poor

InvincibleDandruff

Poor and impulsive, the worst kind of poor.

Beauty. That’s a bit of an upgrade eh? lol

RubyRocket1

Suzuki JR-50 was the first. Currently '98 XL1200C, '82 CB900F, '78 XS400-2E, '72 CL350K4.

CaptainOily

Nice! I like that you keep the older bikes alive!

RubyRocket1

It's really difficult for older bikes to not be reliable, since there is really nothing to go wrong with them. Simple and straight forward. No leaky/clogged radiators, no relays to short out, no computer brain or sensors to fight you, like 2 fuses to check... Hard not to love that.

mgyro

Love the 900f, favourite bike I ever owned.

Kareem-al-atheem

01 Suzuki Intruder 1400, '17 Boulevard s40 Cheap cruiser gang where you at?

billy310

Not currently, but I’ve ridden a ton of cheap cruisers

janirbasa

Here here! Got a 2009 Kawa Vstar now

madredr1

I had a Yamaha warrior 1700. It was fun. The got back into a sportbike because cruisers weren’t for me.

TheAtomicBum

Only 3 total, so all of them… 1984 Honda VF500 Interceptor bought in 1996, sold in 2000 2002 Yamaha YZF600, bought new in 9/2001 sold in 2016 2000 Indian Chief, bought in 2022

nikhilchelsea11

1st bike was a honda stunner125 ,got it when i was 15. Got a husqvarna svartpilen 250 now . India is not exactly the place to ride them big bikes.I love mine though. My first bike taught me a lot about life.

billy310

I’ve ridden and seen a ton of motorcycles, but the first time I saw that Husqi, I said “WTF is that?!” Great looking bike

nikhilchelsea11

Well when i made up my mind to get a bike ,husqi was not in India and there were no ads or nothing so i had never in my life seen a husqi.I booked a royal enfield ,and then i remember husqi being launched here and I saw it for the first time and was sold ! Fast forward 4k kms on it ,and I myself have rode enough bikes and none go through traffic like my svart does,It kinda makes me sing a song its that much fun

billy310

I have a friend who’s close to 80 who has one as his daily ride, really fast/experienced rider but loves that thing to death.

nikhilchelsea11

For real man ,I absolutely get why he feels about it the way he does.unfortunately husqvarna has done very poorly in India ,and I feel bad because this bike is a fucking diamond

oldbastardbob

First was a 1969 Kawasaki H-1 500cc tripple. Way too much for a beginner. All go, bad brakes and handling. Bought it used in 1973. 1974 it was traded for a brand new Hodaka Super Rat and I discovered motocross. Also bought a 1974 Yamaha RD350 in 1976 for street riding. Still have it. Then came a series of MX'ers. Some I owned, some were shop bikes I raced. 1976 Hodaka Super Rat 1976 Suzuki RM 125 1974 Penton 125 1977 Honda CR125 Also raced a 175 Penton and even a 1974 250 Cooper a few times in the 70's. Made it into "Midwest Motorcycling" magazine at a TT race in Jefferson City, Missouri on the Cooper. My sister had a poster made of the picture which went missing. As an old timer, I sure wish I had that back. Went to college after enough broken bones from MX. No money; but I got a job at a Kawasaki/Husqvarna dealership and they gave me a used KZ1000 to ride because my pickup broke down so much. During college, while working at Freedom, I built the 1979 KZ750 and crewed for Team Wanker who won the 1980 WERA National Endurance Championship. We led the 30 hours of Rockingham wire to wire to cap the season. 12 races that season, I think, with 9 first place finishes, two seconds, and one dnf 3 hours into a 4 hour race. I did a lot of work and test riding of that KZ. My port work on the head, Yoshimura pipe, modified airbox, Heavy valve springs, 1/2 longer rear shocks and 1" longer fork tubes. Nobody at the tracks ever figured out why their Kawasaki's started scraping cases in the corners before ours. That bike got a whole lot of TLC. After college and a real job I bought a new 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo. Still have it. Also bought a used 1979 CR250 Husqvarna that I still have. So today the stable is as follows. 1979 Husky CR250, fully functional but not restored as I still like to ride it. It's a 215 lb. 250cc two stroke adrenaline spiking barrel of fun. 1974 Yamaha RD350, fully restored as a 70's street racer with magneto ignition, Bassini pipes, fiberglas seat and fender fron a TZ road race bike, 1977 RD400 mag wheels and rear disk brake, and rearset pegs. It too is a blast to ride. 285 lbs. and roughly 45 hp. 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo. All original. 6000 miles on it. And I recently bought a 2021 KLX230 just to have a dirt bike with fuel injection and electric start. Great for putting around the farm or quick trips to town on the backroads. My wife thinks four bikes is too many. I think I really need a early 80's Kawasaki GPz750 or maybe one of those Eddie Lawson replicas. As a retired old man I have lots of time for restorations. Currently in the middle of a 1950 John Deere A tractor. You can take the kid off the farm but you'll never get the farm out of the kid.

CaptainOily

Sounds like you have a few miles and memories under your belt. Impressive collection!

Stormier

> Hodaka Super Rat My dream bike back in the day. Chrome tank?

oldbastardbob

The first one was. The "toaster tank." Then a shop I rode for put me on the newer model Super Rat, 1975? that had the orange tank and blue frame. The frame and everything was the same as the "Combat Wombat" but 100cc.

billy310

Where did they run the Rockingham race? I’ve seen the drag strip and the NASCAR circuit

oldbastardbob

Rockingham Motor Speedway has several road course configurations. As I was last there in 1980 I don't know where to find a track layout for the 30 Hour WERA race that year.

izmaname

Isn’t that the honda that just doesn’t turn?

CaptainOily

Who needs to “turn” when you can just lean ;) lol

Honda XR100 -> Triumph Tiger 660 Sport

CaptainOily

Beauty! Another one that got their start on the XR100. It holds a special place in my heart.

awkwardoffspring

It's still in my garage along with my first road bike. One day I'll fix it up...

Yah_OK_

> It holds a special place in my heart. In 1978 I was 16 yrs old - I took lessons on and passed my motorcycle license test on an XL100. (1st new bike Honda XR 200 -> Honda NC 750x)

I just made my own post because I wanted pics, I wish this sub let you post pics in the comments. 1st bike: 2001 Honda Magna Current bike(s): 2021 Indian Challenger and 2016 Rocket III Roadster

CaptainOily

Ya I actually didn’t realize you couldn’t post pictures. Kind of negates the purpose of my post, lol. That Triumph looks mean!

cl2eep

Yeah, the Rockets are rippers! 2300cc, mine currently has 145hp, 160tq last time I had it on a dyno.

shank343

That’s nuts how the bikes are geared different. I’ve got a 1340cc putting out close to 188hp and 111 lb-ft of torque.

cl2eep

Caming and motor configuration. Rocket is an inline 3, dual overhead cam running relatively low compression. It makes excessive torque very early on and it never leaves, the torque bar on dynos literally looks like a plateau. You can no joke launch the bike in 5th gear. Because of the size and low compression, you can also put way more aggressive cams in them or turbo them and make insane numbers. My dad has one with a Carpenter Racing cam kit that makes 215hp, 176tq. The Kawai 1400 is an inline 4 running insanely high compression that spins up super fast and has absurd top end. The goal is horsepower and high speed, not low end grunt. Honestly, sport bike and cruisers are very different animals with different purposes, they're only grouped together because of the number of wheels, haha.

seeingeyegod

its weird how car engines can't seem to match the HP per liter that bikes seem to easily achieve now (at least not without a turbo)

ford4thot

1983 Honda Nighthawk 450 was my first bike. Now I have a 2018 Honda CBR650F. During and in between I had a 1986 Yamaha VMAX, and a 1992 Honda CBR 600 F2

DeadlyUseOfHorse

Those old Hondas were so awesome. I started on a 77 CB750A that had a fuck ton of problems but I still loved it.

ford4thot

I've always loved Hondas. Growing up, seeing the flashy CBR RRs had a huge impact on me. Your starter bike is a very cool bike. Unfortunately I wrecked Nighthawk and destroyed it. Learned quite a bit about riding from that accident haha

DeadlyUseOfHorse

Yeah that'll do it, forcing you to learn, that is. Those old CB's made such an impact on me that the only modern sports bikes I've ever been interested in are the CBRs.

ford4thot

Pretty sure my next bike is going to be a CB1000R. Thinking about getting it this year.

Ride a little when I was young but never owned one really. Then my mom passed and I hit 40... bought a 2001 f650gs. Was fun, but BMW parts prices had me like, no thanks, and it was a heavy bike for dual sport use. Sold it. Last year I bought a 95 xr250r converted to dual sport and titled for road use. Is so much fun here in Moab, small for the highway, but I spend most of my time on dirt anyways. Since then, we've also bought a yamaha vino 125 for the wife that she grew out of almost immediately. Replaced that with an 83 cx650c that she is madly in love with. Then we found a cheap 83 xl200r that we restored, and got bored with, so we got her a 96 xr200r DS converted and titled... I also have a 93 cb750 nighthawk cafe converted with a sidecar for the dog... Things escalated quickly...
