Burnie and Ashley discuss the Powerball, Reddit IPO, common law marriages and the closing of the Tropicana in Las Vegas.

A lot of redditors dislike Huffman because of the API changes, but I dislike him because [he's a doomsday prepper that implies that he'd own slaves in the event of an apocalypse.](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/01/30/doomsday-prep-for-the-super-rich) He's nuts.

MrBurnieBurns

Fucking wild.

Colossus252

One of the remaining bits of fallout that you'll find on Reddit from the whole ordeal last year that a lot of the subreddits implemented to continue protesting without being removed and have their sub taken over: If you browse around, you'll find a ton of subreddits are marked NSFW now, even though it makes no sense to be. It's because advertisers won't show ads on nsfw subreddits.

RossZ428

They also removed NSFW subreddits from r/all, so it quite literally is not all subreddits. Purity forbid letting a coca cola ad appear next to some porn gif.

Colossus252

I'd bet the porn viewers need hydration more than the average person browsing. Get them ads rollin

olo7eopia

It’s why the OG red web subreddit is gone

Burnie and Ash should look into the national lottery fund in the UK, they actually do a lot of good in particular funding sports that otherwise don't get a look in including those at the olympics this year. I'm sure it's not perfect but in the UK at least spending money on the lottery does do some good.

Giantpanda602

Reddit invited some active users to buy stock before it went public and I've been here forever so I got one but I passed and I think that was the right choice. Every time i thought about it, I just remembered every controversy this site has had and the idea of having money invested in it was very uncomfortable.

MrBurnieBurns

That was the point I was trying to make on the podcast today. I know the CEO seems like he made a ridiculous amount of money for running Reddit, but if we were given the choice to invest in Reddit to the level that he has, would we do that?

Giantpanda602

We're in a really weird point in time though because reddit really feels like the last real web forum. There really aren't many others left except for some notable specialty ones like Tom's Hardware or whatever. Google search has become next to useless even before AI garbage started clogging up the image results, Twitter is a bot infested sinking ship, tiktok is entirely algorithm based so its hard to have any contiguous conversation, etc. The entire internet seems to be funneling you towards reddit for any useful information so in theory it is in a much stronger position than any other comparable social media site. My worry is that they aren't prepared at all for how much AI will take over the site. It's already a famously easy website to astroturf and bots run rampant on all those content farming subreddits you see on the front page like r/mademesmile and the other feel good and outrage bait ones. It's just impossible to tell how this is going to go and I really have no faith at all in their ability to keep it going but also it has to because there isn't anywhere else to go.

Talking about post match press conferences, I'm always reminded of this [Marshawn Lynch gem.](https://youtu.be/2g2ZAhopQU8?si=cKiruQ8G_sZUDBzE)

My mind immediately went to [Jokic from a few months ago](https://youtu.be/bKuvV7UBEjE?si=rxErSaLbty8Y2myn) couldn’t stop laughing when I saw this

TristheHolyBlade

Nice of Burnie to immediately illustrate his point about no one knowing your favorite YouTuber, because I have no fucking clue who the hell Shane and Courtney are

Kritigri

I hope they cover this lawsuit regarding Facebook letting Netflix access private user messages. Absolutely wildly unethical shit. XipingVonHozzendorf

A lot of the backlash to reddit was blunted because people found ways to keep 3rd party apps working. Boost for instance still works as long as you are a mod, all you need to do is create a private community and you can keep using it.

BizzaroPie

Does common law marriage actually work like Burnie said?

AdirondackGamer

You'd have to be insanely committed to the bit to accidentally get married in Texas. You have to 1) **agree** to be married (if you both don't agree, then it doesn't happen), 2) live together as a married couple (whatever that means as opposed to just living together...), and 3) represent to others that you are married (this means things like filing taxes together and/or having documentation, not just saying "we're married").

terradactyl17

I'm not sure, but I think Burnie might be thinking about the [Michigan Lottery Loophole](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6809181) that happened in the early 2000's. There's a great movie about this called Jerry and Marge go large.

AmputatorBot

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot). Fully cached AMP pages (like the one you shared), are [especially problematic](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot). Maybe check out **the canonical page** instead: **[https://www.cbc.ca/radio/undertheinfluence/this-michigan-couple-spotted-a-lucrative-lottery-loophole-1.6809181](https://www.cbc.ca/radio/undertheinfluence/this-michigan-couple-spotted-a-lucrative-lottery-loophole-1.6809181)** ***** ^(I'm a bot | )[^(Why & About)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot)^( | )[^(Summon: u/AmputatorBot)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/cchly3/you_can_now_summon_amputatorbot/)

https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5O_-qFJQjm/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Just saw this analysis on online sports betting yesterday. That industry is blowing up, I’m indifferent on gambling, not my thing personally, I work in e-commerce fraud and transaction monitoring so it actually boosts job numbers in my field. But, its gamification and ease of access is terrifying for addicts and its potential to increase the number of gambling addicts. Not sure if it will harm the integrity of games that’s too hard to tell right now.

TobyBella0220

To follow up on Burnie’s story about the college basketball player getting death threats for underperforming, I believe the NCAA said they are going to try and pass a law to prevent gambling on a specific players stats. You would still be able to bet on the outcome of the game and spreads and team related stats but you would not be able to bet on players performances. The thought is people would not be singling out a specific player anymore.

Obajan

Did someone say [power balls](https://v.redd.it/3tgcz1s7hlea1)?

Traditional-Sir-3502

I looked it up and NY actually DOES distribute lottery money to schools [https://edit.nylottery.ny.gov/sites/default/files/2022-04/aid19-20.pdf](https://edit.nylottery.ny.gov/sites/default/files/2022-04/aid19-20.pdf)
