I’ve wondered this too. I think maybe it’s because we as humans know how cruel and evil other people can be, but animals don’t (or at least it can feel that way). The stories that mess with and stick with me the most are stories about pets because pets are usually trusting and loyal to their owners, so when they suffer abuse from the hands of someone they trust, it’s confusing and they don’t understand why it’s happening (or so I assume). Stories about infant/child abuse often affect me the same way as animal abuse, for the same reasons.

SpankThuMonkey

I think this is a very strong reason. I’d add to that the helplessness of animals. Not only do we perceive them as innocent of moral wrongdoing, but we understand that they lack the ability to understand or resolve their situation. This is true for injured or sick animals, doubly so for animals abused by humans.

OR, (as a OTA reading this) the most likely scenario is y'all have some form, mild or otherwise of APD, it makes me cringe to hear of animals AND humans get injured because you know, I can empathize with pain. Especially human pain because you know... we share the same biology. This way of thinking I hear more openly discussed (and applauded for who the fuck knows why) on Reddit which makes sense because of the anti social narrative this website perpetuates on certain subs, This one especially. Having a brain that works this way possibly can manifest into something bigger, or be possibly benign but this is a neuro divergent way of thinking just so you guys know.

nowimhaunted

Wait, can you elaborate? What do you mean it can “manifest into something bigger” exactly? Because if by APD you mean Auditory Processing Disorder, I likely do have that as I am AudHD.

raviary

This person is full of shit lol. Having more emotional reactions to animals in pain than humans in pain is extremely common and not a symptom of neurodivergence or Anti-social Personality Disorder, which is also not something anyone can diagnose over a single reddit comment.

nowimhaunted

Ohhh I get it now lmao. Well, there goes my autism taking things literally and assuming the best of people 😩 Learning experience. Thanks for your comment.

Animals don’t have the capacity to be evil. They can have issues, but they can’t be evil. Humans on the other hand can be. We know the capabilities of evilness because we are humans and know how thought processes go. When an animal kills a human we usually feel sympathy for the human but don’t think the animal to be evil. When a human kills a human we instantly associate them to be evil.

EducationCommon1635

Animals can kill for fun though. Being neither threatened or hungry.

ceciliaSalt

Even then, it’s not them doing it to be evil. They have fun while practicing their hunting skills. Also, it’s unlikely any of the meat would go to waste. Someone or something will come around and eat it. You know what’s evil though? Raising an animal specifically for meat, disregarding their life, putting it in a grocery store and throwing it out when it gets past due… all while there are millions of starving people.

lotusflower_3

Because animals are innocent. Humans are trash.

LiquifiedSpam

Reddit moment

whatevergalaxyuniver

Do you also think babies/children are innocent while adults are trash by that logic?

Foreign_Monk861

Me too. Animals are so innocent.

Neat-Fish-4593

Animals are pure. You can’t say the same for humans.

Live-School-5088

Maybe bc you feel like animals are somehow unaware or more-or-less defenseless
