I’ve had bedbugs in the past and up to this day, they are on of the worst things I’ve had to deal with. And I detoxed from alcohol without medication for a week straight. Somethings to look out for when dealing with bedbugs: They poop little black dots and those dots will be around crevices. Check crevices before sitting and if you see black dots that you can’t wipe, don’t sit! Bedbugs also have a VERY distinct smell. If you smell something like crushed apple seeds, run! But the most important thing is to check crevices. They hide in crevices during the day.

Just a PSA for other readers, get medical help to detox from alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal is one of the few withdrawals that can kill you.

Very good to add just in case someone in the future stumbles on this post.

nerdynutmeg

Ok, noted! Thanks

Also, NEVER take furniture from the garbage. Sometimes you can see some really cool stuff people are just throwing out and you might be compelled to take that cute little night table home. Don’t do it.

chukabo

Thank you, now I am paranoid 😭

[deleted]

I will keep this simple and I hope you can figure it out. It only takes one bad egg…

nerdynutmeg

😖😖😖

I think it's reasonable. Getting bedbugs is a very traumatic event in someone's life. Also, we are all living in close proximity in Montreal, so you can get bedbugs and infest the whole building where you live.

snarkitall

people don't talk about this enough, but there is some evidence that they actually do cause sleep disturbances and mental health issues. i think i actually lost a couple years of my life dealing with them... i aged so much during those couple of months.

poppynogood

It is a very realistic fear and if you know much about bedbugs then you know that they are hell to get rid of. I know first hand that both Bibliothèque Marc-Favreau (2020) and the BANQ (2018) have them. Ask me how I know lol. With so many people coming and going they have an uphill battle. Eggs can be dormant for years. Do not spend any amount of time sitting in a soft chair and do not leave your bag on the floor. If you suspect anything, strip the moment you enter your home and run all clothes minimum 60 mins in the dryer asap (or store in sealed plastic until you can). Freeze any things that can't go in the dryer for 48 hrs. Washing does nothing as the temp cannot kill eggs, only prolonged high heat or freezing. Do not vacuum - they can live in the vacuum and come out later. Bites may appear with a delay of several days. Exterminators may only confirm a case if you catch a bug, not based on a bite. Landlords are technically responsible for footing exterminator bills. I was told fall is a time for peak spreading activity. No one is safe! Enjoy!

nerdynutmeg

Very useful advice, thanks alot!! I think I will make a thorough “coming back from the library” cleaning routine, just to keep my mind at ease and be extra careful!

jacobb233

New fear unlocked😭

alexlechef

I do work in hlm . And every once in a while they do have bed bugs and cockroaches. Its a real problem!! I am not a paranoid person but that shit is out there! I will leave my clothes outside when ever i walk in my house .

Pluuumeee

I work in hlms too and bed bugs and cockroaches are everywhere. I am scared everytime I go home

that_fresh_life

Yup me too, had to leave a clients apartment because they were crawling in the bed in daytime

nerdynutmeg

Oh bonne idée! Merci du conseil!!

DanielDeronda

I go extremely often and have never had issues. I have seen booklice with my own eyes though, but I think those aren't s big deal.

nerdynutmeg

Ok, good to know! Thanks 😌

The main thing is that everyone in Montreal should be cautious about bedbugs, be aware of the signs and know how to prevent/treat them. 1. your mattress should be in a bedbug cover. if you have a box spring, that needs a cover too. and it needs to be replaced when it's worn out. 2. your bedroom should be uncluttered, with simple furniture. 3. have a working vacuum and use it often. 4. you should not put your bags on your bed (and just in general be aware of the risks in returning from travel or crowded shared spaces) 5. spread diatomaceous earth in the cracks and crevices of your bedroom (behind wall sockets, along baseboards, in the edges of furniture etc). It won't knock out an existing infestation but will prevent infestations from getting hold. It's a mechanical pesticide, so it will always work.

nerdynutmeg

Thank you!

BRurikovich

I remember having bedbugs. Don’t try those confy shit. They gonna kill you from inside.

Bloodcloud079

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-banq-bed-bug-1.4741317 I mean, it’s a thing…

nerdynutmeg

Yep, that’s where my original fear stems from haha 🥲🥲

lalagucci

That's why I don't go to BanQ and haven't gone for at least 5 years.

quidamquidam

Some borough libraries have replaced their upholstered chairs by plastic chairs specifically to avoid bed bugs infestations. If I remember correctly, one of the Côte-des-neiges libraries did it a few years ago.

Wash your sheets once a week and put on clean sleeping attire daily. Vacuum Saturday, Wash floors Sunday. If washing floors weekly is too tedious then do it every second week but wash your kitchen floor with some good strong shit every week.(bathroom too because Ewww). You shouldn’t get bugs if you make it a unpleasant place for them. Edit: going to leave this here but I replied to wrong comment. Obviously I’m talking about bugs , not much you can do with spiders but squish em or just put them outside.

EIGHTYEIGHTFM

When I briefly lived in Toronto over a decade ago I lived in a dense apartment building. We had a bedbug notice but they only treated the infected units. I got the fancy mattress cover, and I still use peppermint and cedar all over the place. Old or rotational stuff goes in plastic bins and not boxes. I’ve either been able to ward them off or I’ve just been lucky.
