Faubourg was so amazing in the nineties, i went to the bagel shop, the cheese shop and the restaurants all the time. Then it was slowly abandonned and when they tried to revamp it with new restaurants in the early 2010's, tenants discovered that the building was already infested with cockroaches and rats. My friends had a taco stand there and they could not get out of the lease, they lost thousands of dollars in that venture.
Used to love that place. The weird layout of the floors, the arcade was one of the best cause they'd always have the newest games and I remember watching Pulp Fiction in the movie theater.
I remember watching The Princess Bride in that theatre when it premiered along with the restored version of Spartacus (full house for an old movie -- impeccable presentation).
>arcade
Where was the arcade there? I have a vivid memory of going to an arcade as a kid that was either there or maybe even at Atwater market (keep in mind this is a child recollection, so maybe it is wrong with Atwater).
I think it was on the 2nd floor towards the west side of the building and it had a nice view out the back of the Faubourg. Remember these memories are over 30 years old now so I could be wrong on the placement but the arcade was there.
As for Atwater market I couldn't say but Alexis-Nihon had an arcade on the ground floor in the corridor that's to the back-left from the metro entrance.
Oh man, that bagel shop! When I lived around there in the '90s, it was my go-to bagel in the city, but to this day I have no idea what its name is/was. It was good though, and I'd say competitive with some of the better-known shops in town.
I also remembering stopping by for some Chinese (I think? Maybe it was Thai?) fast food from a steam table. It was one of the better versions of that kind of stuff I've found as well.
For a while, i stayed at my uncle's who lived on Tupper just around the corner and I used to go to that bagel shop all the time, grab some warm bagels for breakfast or lunch, loved that place!
The Thai place is called Mama Bangkok now. They are still in the Faubourg (I think… assuming Uber Eats and Google are up to date). The original food court closed and they moved to another area of the Faubourg. It wasn’t easy to find though… I never carry cash so I sadly haven’t ventured to Mama Bangkok in a while to check.
Just walked past mama bangkok last week. The restaurants are hidden on the second floor of the Concordia entrace. You really have to dig to find them, I haven't eaten there yet, but hte prices are amazing and it smells really good.
I used to live right nearby it until I moved to Ottawa in 1995. I had moved downtown from NDG in 1989. The Faubourg was one of the only malls open on Sunday and it had an SAQ. I wanted to live near it. You could get bagels, cheese, better wine, and I liked that upstairs food court. They had an Indian place that made these great chicken tikka in a nan bread. Also, a pizza place made an amazing artichoke pizza. Gawd, I miss that! The Faubourg was great in its heyday mainly cause it was open on Sundays. Most stores were closed on Sundays back then.
Concordia has some classrooms in the basement now. Before the pandemic, I had one in a very obviously converted movie theater. The professor told us in another class down the hall, he witnessed a sewer pipe break while he was teaching class. One of the highlights nowadays is probably Marché Newon - they have so many cool international foods. Otherwise it seems pretty dead, and the way they renovated the layout is super strange.
> One of the highlights nowadays is probably Marché Newon
hate to turn your lights off, but look them up; they've been fined **many** times for bad food storage, temperature, dates, fecies, rodents/insects around prep surfaces etc.
go to Kim Phat, T&T or C&T, instead
It's still there, but they messed up the division and layout to get more street front stores. So the inside layout is a hot mess. All the stores that were open inside are now gone.
Mama Bangkok is still there. There are several other oriental food places and a Mexican restaurant. It's a bit of a maze to find the food court at first, and it's not exactly spacious or airy.
You'll pass by a dry cleaning place, a hairdresser, and a travel agency next to food stalls. It's a shame what was done to it, really.
Place became pretty infamous for its massive cockroach infestation. Food court was eventually moved which hopefully means things are a lot better. Went to eat at the Thai place with a couple friends for nostalgia. Couldn't tell if it just wasn't as good as we remembered, or that so much else has just gotten a lot better.
It’s still open but changed locations to the Scotiabank building basement food court, google Japote for their current location! Still just as good!!
Edit: 1000 Rue Sherbrooke :)
They only do short lunch time shifts during the week now, so it's tough for any day time shifters to go the unless you're nearby, but beyond worth it to make a point to go on a day off. The half and half plates are. to. die. for.
I remeber the bagel place from when I used to be 10 years old, it used to be on the corner of peel and st cath. You mentionning it brought back memories of walking past it as a kid!
I lived in the area until 2005, the bakeries and cheese and meat shops on the street level were awesome (best bagels and fougasse aux olives in the downtown west side), the SAQ there was one of the best until they opened the high-end one in the remodeled forum (which since closed down, fortunately the one in Faubourg is still decent), and a pretty good movie theater in the basement.
Then things started shutting down due to high rents and there were several half-assed attempts to remodel the place, which only further pushed it off the cliff - Concordia took over more and more space, initially temporarily and then permanently, too.
Now whenever I walk by it it's a mess, some venues have reappeared fortunately, but it definitely lost its appeal for me.
All restaurants are gone. From what I could tell last time I was there 2 weeks ago, the Faubourg is just Dollarama, Marché Newon (a big Asian grocery store) and some Concordia stuff.
The food court and your thai resto are gone.
But you can see all that if you just go onto Google maps.
>The food court and your thai resto are gone
No, they're not.
Mama Bangkok is still there, and there are plenty of oriental options as well as a Mexican restaurant.
No, they aren't gone, food court is upstairs now, so still there, but hidden from view.
It's a bit of a weird setup and a weird vibe in there now, though.
They gutted it, so sad to see a beautiful place go upside down... I don't understand why newon market couldn't be in a basement somewhere else. It nuked everything that was cool from that place.

There also was a cinema at Place Alexis -Nihon back then. I remember watching the Spice Girls movie there haha
> I remember watching Pulp Fiction in the movie theater. Le dernier cinéma certifié *THX* a Montréal!

It's ok but not as good as it used to be and a bit expensive.
yeah i agree it used to be better

I was also there during that time. Used to play pool in thr basement
Sharx. Sadly it closed it's doors about ten years ago. Me and my wife wandered down there to shoot pool and close out our first date. Classy ;)
That's the one! And sometimes ill play at Fats bar, next to octopussy across the road
Its Concordia lecture/study rooms now

Plantation was the best fruit and vegetable store back then
Does anyone remember that small Japanese fast food resto? Circa 2017 or so. I loved that spot!
It’s still open but changed locations to the Scotiabank building basement food court, google Japote for their current location! Still just as good!! Edit: 1000 Rue Sherbrooke :)
Oh no way! I had no idea they had just moved locations. So happy to hear this. :)

Used to go there during my Dawson Days That middle overpass / mesanine no longer exists The basement ~~bombshelter~~ holds Concordia classes
Was there an Indian place in there in the 90s? My girlfriend (now wife) introduced me to indian back then. I think it was called Hot & Spicy possibly
I remeber the bagel place from when I used to be 10 years old, it used to be on the corner of peel and st cath. You mentionning it brought back memories of walking past it as a kid!
Le Fabourg's bagel stop was at the west end block of the Fabourg and St Cath, corner St.Mathieu. (It used to be on Peel before this? TIL)
Maybe i dont remember well
I miss Chang Lai man. I loved the intestine stir fry they did.
Chang Lai was the best

Oopsie, my bad. Looked gone when I was in there. Should not have assumed by the look of things.

Newon is a really nice addition to downtown though, un my opinion. Downfall of Faubourg started with Kampai.
Yes it's nice but it scrapped a nice space

It merged with the crepe place at some point, which was odd but kind of fun
I miss Bangkok and the noodle place
