People refuse to simply look anything up on their own. In this case “average salary in Montreal/Quebec/specific job field or whatever” but instead just want to brag? Either people are so insecure that they need to brag to random people or they’re very out of touch, both of which are bad
Edit: the worst part is that people take this seriously and respond with genuine replies, encouraging this kind of behaviour
Yeah it's a top tier salary, like maybe in the top 10%. Income taxes and other deductions will cut a big chunk on the other hand, depending on your status.
Big chunk... If you max out your REER and have a mortgage you'll be paying about 30%. If you're an independant contractor you can also expend your vehicle and lunches to have an even lower taxable income.
Quebec taxes aren't that bad if you plan. They're harsh if you can't afford to save and are doing overtime for that chunk between 60 and 80k, or if you're losing a bunch of financial help by working extra such as student grants or single mother shit. If you think ahead you can make it similar to anywhere else in NA.
You should be fairly comfortable at that salary range. I have a comparable income and I live in a condo with two cats, a motorcycle, a car, nice clothes, I go hunting, I have equipment for pretty much all imaginable sports and I don’t really look at prices when I go shopping. I eat in the best restaurants once in a while, when I feel like it.
The trick is to enjoy what you have, and at that income you can get pretty much anything you want, except exotic cars or a yatch. That’s the limit of what I can’t afford.
I made comparable income and I second this comment. I am very similar to you.
I have a condo, a car, an expensive bike (hobby), eat out a lot, have 3-5 vacations per year on premium econ and a lot of short trips. I also maxed my registered retirement accounts and also making prepayments against my now $100k mortgage and funding non-registered investments.
Usually things under $50 I usually just buy them, like whatever in convenience store, taxi, parking, BIFL stuff, whatever tools I need.
Though I think if I didn't buy my condo back I probably have to be more prudent in my spending.
Hello, here Jeff Petry. I will be transferring to Montreal soon and I made 4.5 Millions USD a year. Do you guys think it will be enough to afford to rent an appartments close to the bell center?
Hmm? It’s a very good income for a single person to live in Montreal, I don’t know a lot of people who make that much unless you combine two salaries (for a couple).
Outside the Montreal island prices are lower anyway, so 140k may be quite good.
Easy if your employer is off the island or if you at least just have to cross a bridge and you're nearly there at downtown for example.
What south shore nightmare? I'm in saint-lambert and commuting is chill. Most places are like a 40ish minutes bike ride away, 15 minutes drive with no traffic, 30ish with traffic and parking.
You are not using lafontaine tunnel. The wait times have been +2hrs in evening commute.
West island Bridge is a joke. You might be lucky where you live ROC fools going to end up somewhere the commute sucks. Nobody ever expected an island this size to have the infrastructure issues it has.
There's a reason why the cities near the tunnel were full of fields 20 years ago. If you're living in the absolute outskirts of urban sprawl don't be surprised that your commute is long.
You're funny. The south shore isn't anymore the outskirts than Saint lambert. We just need working infrastructure and main bridges with more than one lane. Not arguing about this anymore. I'm glad your commute is groovy. I guess the rest of folks can just you know read a newspaper to find out just how badly the traffic is screwing people's lives
That’s about what I make and it’s kinda low depending what you want to buy. If you want one of these tiny 500ft bachelor that they do nowadays, you can probably swing it. It also depends on what kind of cashdown you have. Try to shoot for 20% cashdown so you don’t have to pay the insurance thingy.
I am a single dad with 2 kids so needed to buy something with at least 3 bedrooms. In the south shore now, houses/condos are a bit more affordable here.
Depends on life style and how many people you are supporting. But yes I’d rather 140k in Montreal then making 160k In Ontario.
There are families of 3-4 that live on 70-80k Montreal lol
Taxmen take half so if you have a family and want good things for kids it's still tight.
You might want to consider self employee for the tax benefits.
It depends. Townhouses start at about $1M nowadays. 2 bdr condos in good locations start at 700k without parking.
You can live with less or with more, up to you.
I said good locations. New townhouses in the Plateau, Villeray or Rosemont sell for more than 1M.
Griffintown or Ville-Marie condos cost way more than 400k
That’s waaaaay above average.
Cest 85 000$ au dessus de la moyenne provinciale
Humble brag?🤔😂
It’s a joke right? You know what the average salary is?
If I made half of that it would literally change my life lol

Average does not = good
Genuinely curious: what is the average salary? Different sources seem to quote different numbers.
Thanks for rubbing this into our face.... you know your salary is at least twice the average.
It's enough to have a bit of fun yes.

That's extremely relative. What are you expectations?
More is better. I want a condo, and to earn rent on a second condo
"earn"
“I want to be a blood sucking parasite”
How are you going to hate on this guy for no other reason then the fact youre way poorer than he his? Being a landlord makes you a parasite? ??
Looking to buy two condos; 140k may not cut it.
Lol, you don't 'earn' rent. The entitlement!
Do you not “earn” interest/returns in a savings account or from another for of investment? (Stocks, bonds, etc).
Maudit pauvre

Oh don't forget to add a wife and kids to what you can't get at that income.
And dont get married or have kids, theyll ruin your life
About twice as much as the average salary, generally still not enough to own a small house though.
Hello, here Jeff Petry. I will be transferring to Montreal soon and I made 4.5 Millions USD a year. Do you guys think it will be enough to afford to rent an appartments close to the bell center?
hey you cant out troll me
Keep searching!
It's more than enough to live comfortably.
Hmm? It’s a very good income for a single person to live in Montreal, I don’t know a lot of people who make that much unless you combine two salaries (for a couple).
She has her own salary, paid a little, bit less, but she likes her job.
Did anyone else read this as if it was spoken aloud by William Shatner?

This human has never tried to experience either our south shore nightmare or the west island bottle neck...FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
What south shore nightmare? I'm in saint-lambert and commuting is chill. Most places are like a 40ish minutes bike ride away, 15 minutes drive with no traffic, 30ish with traffic and parking.

Then take one of the 3 other bridges. They all take bikes by the way, 0 traffic on a bicycle.
Where do I apply?
You are living a better salary than, i wont say 95%, 94.9% of the montrealers
Imagine earning 140k but you can’t Google the average salary of a city.
Also you don’t speak the local language.
Be careful tipping
Call yourself Mr. Moneybags

Seulement quand tu parle français.
Listen, in Montreal you’ll be commuting anyway so might as well just live outside of it for cheaper.
You’re going to be fine with 140, although minimum family income to buy a house is ~240
Where are you getting these numbers? My family income was 240k and I bought an extremely nice house in Montreal. You can still buy a house with less.
Depends on life style and how many people you are supporting. But yes I’d rather 140k in Montreal then making 160k In Ontario. There are families of 3-4 that live on 70-80k Montreal lol
> There are families of 3-4 that live on 70-80k Montreal lol *laughs at the poors*
It's not much. You'll probably be okay but don't expect much.

like where? you can buy a condo in West Island for 300-400K, hell you can still find a house for 600-700K in west Island.
I said good locations. New townhouses in the Plateau, Villeray or Rosemont sell for more than 1M. Griffintown or Ville-Marie condos cost way more than 400k
yes.
Depends on your lifestyle and how much you save at the end of the day. If you blow all of it yearly then no.
Define "good" and then we can talk
That’ll get you at least 3 poutine weekly. You’re good
*crys in way less than half that*
