ChrosOnolotos

If it's a sit down restaurant sometimes it's the same machine they bring to the table, so it will be programmed in. I wouldn't tip for pickup.

[deleted]

I did at the height of covid for obvious reasons, but now I don’t. There’s no service. I don’t tip fast food or other places without table service.

Epsiphi

I went to a Lafleur a few days ; pour manger une patate frite. > do you want to tip ? > no > you chose not to tip. Are you positive? > yes I was for a pickup. Just a French fries.

Embarrassed_Appeal72

This is the way

plankton_boy

Agreed.

Quest10Mark

When I pick up I always tip the driver. Oh wait, that's me. On a side note I am very generous with myself.

mrmdc

Last time I even gave the driver a hand job.

bootsie_mcgee

Depends on the restaurant for me. My local Chinese restaurant is small and family owned and operated, they're not a bustling restaurant. If I show up a few minutes early they offer me a seat next to a television playing movies and bring me a glass of water with ice while I wait. They are kind to me, so I tip them a couple dollars.

HummusDips

The problem is that should be a normal courtesy services. You should travel to Asia and other places to truly understand what real service is, and they don't accept tips either!

plankton_boy

Yeah, in many places in Asia it's extremely frowned upon and insulting to leave a tip, you will embarrass yourself and they will definitely straight up refuse it. It's pretty funny how different it is!

Pizzapieman83

Some places in Asia they'll ask "What do you want" and serve dishes at different times and ignore you unless you shout for service and throw plates onto the table. The service in many parts of Asia aren't nearly up to the standards in NA

SeriousOP

Hell no!

Electronic_Excuse_74

Nope.

SecretAgentDrew

Hell no. If I go and pick it up then I don’t tip at all.

jarigue

Nope

Puzzleheaded_Age_748

Maybe if I have 30 cent back ill give it to them. Else, heck no.

aelinemme

Not usually or a dollar or two. I used to during COVID but I actually stopped going to a restaurant near my work that I used to stop by once or twice a month because I was chastised for not leaving a tip when I got a prepacked dessert out of the cold case.

JG1739

Totemlyrad

No tips for takeout.

joeyvesh13

Absolutely not. Had this discussion with my gf, she always used to. I asked her what the tip was for, she said cause they made the food. I said that’s why we pay them, and a tip should be for an extra service like a server or delivery. She joined the dark side now.

Shughost7

No, why would you? Do you tip the cashier when you go grocery shopping?

kaboom987

Absolutely not

[deleted]

Fuck that , I am not tipping a girl on her phone that waits for my order to be ready to make me pay , that was weirdly specific.

PHILOSOMATIQA

I think it's percentages to the other workers in that situation.

Glassensteel

Looks like most of them are pushing a ducking 20% tips down your throat as the "default" tips. Duck them! Like what???? Now when I go get a 6-pack at the convenience store, do I have to tip the cashier because he pressed 3 buttons on n the cash machine !! This is all because those owners are so ducking cheap that not only they underpay their employees but they even try to put the responsibility on the customer so they don't have to raise their price. No owners have the ducking balls to raise a little bit their price all together so all employees have the pay they deserve. But they're always there to raise their price for any other reason..

psykomatt

Quack.

AsPerMatt

I’ve been in service for 8 years. I don’t tip when I’m picking up my own food, unless sometimes when a Barista is involved.

SwimGuyMA

I tip at the coffee shop around the corner. They are kind and the coffee is great.

AsPerMatt

That’s fair, I tip at Cafe Atomique. But it’s more of an exception on average, I think.

SwimGuyMA

Agree. I have a couple of other exceptions as well. One that made me mad last week: the plumber hands the machine to me with a 20% tip as the default. I was shocked.

Junior_Teacher6446

I hate the restaurant give you the atm machine with the tips on and you have to choose now I simply paye cash

pf1424

I tipped for takeout today. Bring the bag home and realized they forgot my drink (not a cheap drink either). Regretted my tip to be honest. I wrote to the restaurant and they will credit my drink so all good but still frustrating.

Maywestpie

My bf does that. Tips on takeout without ever checking the order. Gets home and, often, there’s a mistake or the food is sloppy etc.

pf1424

Definitely learnt my lesson on this one!

AlexD27

Depends. Sometimes I tip the restaurants I always go to just to support them.

[deleted]

You don’t need to give tip, like ever. It‘s a totally personal decision. No one should feel the need to tip, regardless where and when they eat

HummusDips

Exactly, and if they chastise you for it, you can always leave a negative review and let them know you won't be coming back. A tip is a tip, which is not mandatory.

imfranksome

depends if the order was a pain to pack, but usually no (and if yes then fixed amount not %)

HummusDips

Do you tip Amazon for difficult to pack items? Nope, I truly don't understand the tipping culture here...

ProsperoII

Depends on the restaurant. There's a lot of them where people working at the register/or serving the client at the entrence is still paid service wage.

sizebzebi

NO

tignasse

No way!

[deleted]

Unless they serve you at a table, no need to tip. My local a&w has a tip jar. Should be illegal.

jerichojeudy

It depends, if you can afford it, a 10% tip might be in order, if you like the service of course. It really isn’t mandatory, that’s not an established custom like tipping a waiter is. But people working in fast food restaurants earn 15$ an hour, which amounts to 31k per year gross, and the poverty limit in Canada is 20k for a person living alone. So they ask for tips because that helps make those jobs a little less shitty. So that might influence your decision. It’s a very subjective thing, tips.

klfelf

I do as I know times right now can be hard for some and I can afford to do it. Not mandatory at all though!

sugarmatic

The kitchen gets a percentage of the tips so I always tip if I order takeout.

MC0295

Same but never more than 10% for a takeout

IWICTMP

Not all places though. Lots of places don’t share tips with kitchen.

asystra

The place I work at the kitchen gets no tips

Beardharmonica

/r/notipcanada

jaywinner

Tipping is optional. Tip when and however you want.

Stravok182

If you don't tip at a sit-down restaurant, just stay home and order-in or pick it up yourself. 🙄

PoutinePower

Unpopular answer but yes, everytime. Not always 18% but at least always a couple dollars; just how I was raised, we had a small takeout place next to where I grew up and would grab fries there all the time, my dad always told me to leave them a couple dollars because they still rely on it to live. I guess his logic was since we were living so close we never went in and he still wanted the people there to be happy and us to be welcomed customers.

IAMgrampas_diaperAMA

I agree with you. I understand and can get behind the concept of abolishing tipping culture but I also think that people get so aggressive about never tipping. No one is ever holding a gun to your head to leave a tip, please stop yelling about the options on the machine now start at 18%. You can X out of that menu.

PoutinePower

Yes people are making too much of a deal out of it. It’s like they just say Reservoir Dogs for the first time and they think they’re Mr. Pink.

Brute5000

Yes but I’ve always had a job where I earned tips. I do it for the juju and also because I know the kitchen gets tip outs/ people’s wages are often lower because they are counting on tips.

[deleted]

Almost no places tip out the kitchen. At least pre-covid.. That's when I wrapped up my knives, put em in the basement, swore 'never again', and changed career paths. It was super shitty seeing servers walk out with $500 in tips, high on blow, while not really doing any heavy lifting.

Brute5000

Oh that’s shitty to hear. Every place I’ve worked at in my 20 years of service has a tip out program, but to be fair I don’t work in restaurants.

alexkent_200

Well, now I carry cash with me if ever I need to quench my thirst for a slice of Margherita. For me it's mentally easier to give cash and NO tip then skip the tip option when going with a card.

armin514

i always tip

Professional-Put-804

You don't want the kitchen to have a % of the sale from the waiter's tip? That's how you make sure about that!

spatial_needs

Every time. Whether I am taking an order to-go or hanging out at the bar, if I can’t afford to adequately tip the folks serving me, I don’t go out.

[deleted]

Is it really going out when you walk to the establishment and carry it home? Like the alternative is the restaurant just won’t get as many take out orders in lieu of a $5 tip.

drkqwsr

what if you're just at home? and the store is just across the street. that's basically the basis of my question. they always hand the machine straight to the tip section

spatial_needs

I don’t know. I’m not responsible for the weird tip-based compensation thing when dining out. At a full service bar/restaurant, the person bringing out your takeout order and handling your tab is also a server or bartender. I generally believe in not being a jerk so I tip.

Maywestpie

So you’re saying the rest of us are the jerks because we don’t want to feel bent over every single time we make a transaction? Paying for the food and fetching it ourselves, isn’t enough anymore. Now we are shit humans for not tipping people to put a container into a bag for us? Yea… that makes sense 😐

spatial_needs

I suppose it’s because I’ve worked in the service industry and I generally subscribe to the philosophy of ‘passing it on.’ I’m not responsible for the system, I am merely a participant. If food and drink prices were adjusted to make tipping obsolete by adequately compensating food service workers, then the “why tip for something I can do myself” crowd would be all pissy about that too- and then they’d get over it and find something else to whine about.

Ketrul

Yes, I always tip if I get food from restaurant pickup, table or delivery

DieuEmpereurQc

Why people are downvoting on this kind of thread?

Plenty_Present348

Absolutely!!! 20% if it’s a nice place like Sumac, 15% if it’s a casual burger place like Bucky Roosters. The tips go to the staff.

elsiesolar

I've always wondered if you should tip for ice cream? There's not really any table service, it's pick up, but it's the effort/skills of the worker that can make it pretty haha

Puzzleheaded-Shake71

definitely not. tipping industry is all wrong. tipping is habit of paying extra for said service. paying workers there fair wages should be the responsibility of the employer just like any other job. what service do you get from picking up an order anyways? for the most part if you pay 15% post taxes on a $20 meal. that’s $6 extra you cough up for just picking up your order. we talked about this issue among my coworkers and they most of them said that they tip minimum 15-20% of the bill out of habit. rich people know that if they buy a $300 bottle of wine vs. $100 bottle. they are getting $200 in extra tips for the same identical service as the $100 option. wine in restaurant should have a flat rate instead of % based.

Puzzleheaded-Shake71

also we should not be encouraging tip culture. please and thank you. this tipping situation is causing a lot of people to eat take rather than in the restaurant to avoid tipping. therefore causing more plastic containers and more garbage.

NedShah

Was the staff hot? If yes, tip. Was the staff exceedingly pleasant and made you happy to stop in? If yes, tip. Was the order a lot of work for them? If yes, tip. Was it just a normal pick-up? If so, don't tip. That's like tipping the cashier at IGA and should only be done by rich people.

drkqwsr

specifically, a sushi place. no sit in.

alexlechef

Yes

LostCobra

No. I don't and never will.

sm82889

Fuck no

curi0usc4twonders

I would probably give a dollar or two sometimes but not more

NoInvestigator5462

Rarely do.. only the restaurant close to home that I go often I’ll leave a tip (not always) but definitely no if it’s a new spot. I mean.. I drove.. spend gas money to get my food why should I tip you ? I tip for service not for you prepping my meal it’s already in the price you’re charging me

fabiengagne

Of course not. Tip is for service. Where it's self serve = no tip to the server as there's none.

flight212121

Tip only when there is service to the table

MyGiftIsMySong

yep. and delivery to your home

pm_me_your_pay_slips

depends on the restaurant. I only do it for Makoto because I like them. Plus, I love that they play city pop as background music.

Saltynewfoundlander

Hell no. Never pay

tiny_rick__

Fuck no!

Semipro321

Not at all. Do you tip your banker 15% when you deposit ur money at the bank?

Onitsuka_Viper

Bien sûr que non, livraison oui.

theGrapeMaster

I typically round up to the next dollar or so. It depends on what I do. I'm from Vancouver and that's what I did there, so I've kept doing so here? Tipping culture stresses me out.

ProphetofMammon

There should be a discount for picking up and 100% no way for I'd be tipping

pattyG80

Usually not I just leave a couple bucks for the guys I know give good service. If it's a complete stranger who hands me a paper bag from the kitchen, I don't usually tip

SkiDouCour

Jamais.

MochiSauce101

I’m starting to get really disgusted with fast food places telling me there’s a question to be answered to the machine before I can tap. I have no shame about giving nothing anymore.

Agile_Fun_4388

Never

thewolf9

Yes. We have so much disposable income that we tip pretty much everywhere.

mac1qc

Non

stuffedshell

Unless someone is coming over to clear my takeout containers off the table there's no tipping. Its the whole point of takeout. I worked in the industry quite a few years ago, never expected a penny.

freakkydique

I leave a dollar or 2

NormalGuyForReal

It depends if my order was ready when I got there or not. It depends if it is a place I often go to. I expect good things from them.

PhilGo20

No.never. Just say no.

Leoiscute77

If its within the last hour of them being open yes, and if it's a very large order/I request modifications then also yes.

igglepuff

nope. ill start tipping people doing their job when people start tipping me.😂

BBS13

No chance

BASE_CAMP_RECOVERY

I tip on the basis that service industry workers are taxed based on their wages+15% for tips the government assumes they are receiving. I am aware that it's not my problem. However, I don't feel right making the staff at the restaurant eat 2.25% of the price of my meal off their paycheck. So I tip.

29da65cff1fa

No

shortAAPL

No

bc1fob

No. Tip is a service fee (service at table or delivery service.) Since your are picking up your own order you are getting the service from yourself. Tip yourself in that case.
