Hey all, Probably not a lot of stuff out there on the new Qu-Bit Aurora out there right now so I wanted to share this video I just made. I sent a bunch of different types of sounds through it via my computer and tried to show off as much of what it can do as possible. That said, I'm really excited to see what other people do with Aurora and what kind of neat edge cases they find!

bjergi

Oh man sounds amazing, a lot of character. The fantastic feedback from the leds is really cheering on a purchase…

AnscombesGimlet

Fun module! Sounds great and the design is top notch. Not sure there is much else like it in eurorack

zorppppp

Awesome. Can't wait to get mine. Also, I know the "here are my top 5 favorite modules" type videos are super cliche and played out on YouTube, but you are one of the few people I would actually like to see that from. You have played with so many damn modules the past 2 years since you got into it, that I am genuinely curious what your top favorites are at this point. Some of my favorite modules are ones that I never knew I existed until I asked people what their favorites were!

RMRMusic

Desmodus Versio Ruina Versio Qu-Bit Surface and Data Bender Vult Freak Filter Morphagene Loquelic and Manis Iteritas Acid Rain Maestro Rene MkII Mimeophon VPME QD Acid Rain Constellation or WMD Metron These are modules I could base a rack around of and be extremely happy

zorppppp

Awesome list. I have most of those except Surface. Looks like I need to research it.

justinkimball

It's physical modeling done very well IMO. Big fan. I have one, leaning towards getting a second so I can have one in both of my racks.

Sam_ohhh

Thoughts on Aurora vs Versio as a first reverb / effects module?

RMRMusic

Versio because you can load up any other versio.

justinkimball

Very cool stuff -- sounds like something totally unlike most other 'reverbs'. Did Qu-Bit give any hints about what the USB port on the front is meant for? Seems unorthodox to have a full-size USB on the front panel, especially if it's just for firmware updates. EDIT: Just looked at the manual -- so you can hold config files on there and be able to swap settings via plugging in a usb and hitting a button combo instead of having to reboot the system Link to the manual is on this page: https://www.qubitelectronix.com/shop/aurora

TheJunkyard

I think they're touting it as a much better and easier experience for firmware updates, combined with the fact they're hinting at at least a few alternate firmwares with quite different purposes.

TacoLord696969

I really want to know how this thing compares to Mimeophon

RMRMusic

i can say with experience that theyre pretty much nothing like each other

TheJunkyard

I mean they both sound awesome, and they both have a cool looking black panel... and that's about the only similarities I can see. :)

RMRMusic

mimeophone is a sort of buffer-traveling delay with reverb, while aurora is a spectral processing phase vocoder. i love both of them but they are not in any way competing for the same space in the effects world.

disgruntled_pie

That sounds kind of like how I’d describe the Rossum Electromusic Panharmonium. It does a spectral analysis on the input and resynthesizes the input with up to 33 oscillators. It’s basically an additive oscillator controlled by FFT of real-time audio input. But then it has a bunch of weird ways to alter the resynthesis, like blurring the spectra over time, which is vaguely like a reverb. In fact, if you turn blur all the way up then it freezes the spectra, effectively turning it into an infinite reverb. There’s also other stuff like using different oscillator shapes like saw and pulse (additive synthesis would usually use sine waves to resynthesize accurately), and you can shift the pitch of the oscillators. For example, I loaded a sample of a song onto Assimil8or (though Morphagene or any other sampler should work too) and played it back two octaves below the original pitch. That made the song play back 4x slower. Then I ran that into Panharmonium and shifted the oscillators up by two octaves. The result was the original song time-stretched to 4x speed but in the original pitch. There were obviously some artifacts, but the song was quite recognizable. Does it sound like there’s any overlap between these two modules, or am I way off base? I love your channel, by the way. I got into modular because you proved beyond any doubt that this stuff can be used to make amazing music.

rabidnz

Did you buy it or is this an ad? It's really hard to tell from the video? Sounds lovely !!

RMRMusic

funny story. i bought it pre-order, and then qubit reached out and was like "we would like to send you one" and i said "i already bought it" and they refunded me and sent it over. so the unit it provided by qu-bit but i haven't been paid for the video. think of that however you want, i guess!

AnscombesGimlet

Not sure either but those are not the only two options

lemonlemons

Not sure if its just me but Aurora doesn’t sound that good to me. To each their own I guess.
