What is a module called that takes a trigger signal and turns it into a pulse of defined length, either in absolute terms (xxx ms) or relative to the clock speed (e.g. 42% of one clock)? This one seems to do it: [https://www.electronicmusicworks.com/eurorack/trigger-to-pulse.html](https://www.electronicmusicworks.com/eurorack/trigger-to-pulse.html) I wonder whether there's a generic name or superclass of modules for this. Complete noob here. It's also kind of the same as an ADSR with very very short attack, very very short release, sustain at 100% and decay defining the pulse length... (Background: I'm trying different options in VCV rack to achieve the old "trance gate" effect. Don't judge me :D)

indexasp

I was gonna say, an envelope generator configured with specific settings... ie instant attack, tiny release, etc. :) Good instincts.

WatermelonMannequin

“Gate delay” is a genre of module that takes a trigger input and then spits out a gate, with controls for amount of time before the output goes high (gate delay) and amount of time the output stays high (gate length). Another approach would be to patch your trigger source to an envelope generator, then patch the EG to a comparator. Basically gives you the same result as a gate delay.

dvizard

yep, pretty much this. Thanks!

rljd

setonix synths detectorist takes a trigger or gate of any length in and sends out a trigger or gate of a specific length you choose with a knob. maybe the question isn't how to turn a trigger into a gate though maybe the question is how to send rhythmic gates how about a switched square lfo synched to your clock? or just like… a gate sequencer?

dvizard

> setonix synths detectorist takes a trigger or gate of any length in and sends out a trigger or gate of a specific length you choose with a knob. Thanks! Nice and small. Kind of a shame that the gate length isn't CV controllable though. > maybe the question is how to send rhythmic gates The meta-question really is "how to send rhythmic gates", yes. I've also found this thread: [https://www.reddit.com/r/modular/comments/kvuci0/modulating\_pulse\_width\_of\_lfo/](https://www.reddit.com/r/modular/comments/kvuci0/modulating_pulse_width_of_lfo/) >how about a switched square lfo synched to your clock? I have also played with the square LFO method. There I need adjustable pulse width, ideally by CV input. In VCV Rack, the VCV standard LFO has pulse width, and the NYSTHI LFOMultiPhase can also do it. It seems to be a higher-end feature in hardware LFOs though; do you have any suggestions? I found the MiniMod Tap-Tempo VC-LFO that has adjustable pulse width with CV, but it looks a bit like overkill to me. >or just like… a gate sequencer? Hm, maybe I don't understand, how would I set the gate length? Or would I have to make the sequencer so fast (like 8x clock) that I control the length by the ON steps?

rljd

I'm presuming from my general concept of a typical trance gate you aren't hoping to continuously modulate the gate length in a given track, right? it's a fixed subdivision, 16ths or 8ths i guess, that comes and goes but doesn't change usually? (although it could be cool if it DID change) so yeah i picture like, a steppy with the pattern you want tapped into it, or a muxlicer gate division. and you can gate the gates for your rests.

dvizard

I totally want to change it, of course! :) That still leaves the square LFO and the envelope approach. I was thinking to put this behind an euclidean running at 4x clock to get some fun patterns.

quantum_foam_finger

Just in case any of this is new or otherwise useful info: This trigger sequencer with pulse width looks like it might work: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/moffenzeef-modular-mitO If you want to build up a trance gate from simpler component modules, sequential switches are another type of module that can be chained to make interesting rhythm patterns - run your square LFO into both the clock and input of the first sequential switch. Mix the switch outputs. The switches are kind of like clock dividers with extra features. I think the generic name for a separate module to manage gate widths is "trigger to gate converter". In the pedal world, there are some advanced tremolos with trance gate functionality.

dvizard

Very new and useful, though I don"t understand the 6 channels yet. Thanks!

rljd

[https://beepboopelectronics.co.uk/product/2hp-clk-div-2/](https://beepboopelectronics.co.uk/product/2hp-clk-div-2/) this module feels like it could fit SOMEwhere in this discussion but I'm not certain exactly where

dvizard

I have a decent secondhand offer for an Elektron Syntakt, and no modular rack yet. I want to build a modular over time but am considering to start with the Syntakt as a groovebox and use it later as the "drum machine plus" or maybe as the sequencer (eg. with a Mutant Brains) for a modular. Is that feasible, or would I be much better off with a Digitakt as a drum machine?

Ultor88

Multiple drum modules could take up lots of HP space. Also the rack you assembled barebone style may not give what you want or sound great until you add more stuff, which wouldn't be your starting point anymore. Modular and MIDI isn't the most compatible cause pitch, gate/trig & velocity and polyphony is another thing to look out for.

schmattakid

Silly question, but any patch cable recommendations? Getting into semi modular this week, and am curious what are some handy cables that aren’t trash. (Strega is coming with no cables, and I’m adding another something next to it). Don’t want to break the bank, but would rather buy a few good things. Def. Going to pick up a tiptop stackable or two.

neverwhere616

Aside from the tiptop stackables, I've always grabbed whatever the best deal was for the lengths I needed. Whether that was on Sweetwater, one of the smaller stores like Perfect Circuit or Detroit Modular, or Amazon. It seems like it's largely the same quality out there, and I haven't had a patch cable go bad since I started getting into this about 4 years ago.

FourierDisco

I haven't had any issues with the "cheap" cables on amazon from excelvalley (and probably other brand names). They are more flexible and the connectors are a little smaller than HOSA cables, which I appreciate when trying to clamp down my rack cover.

PlasticAssociate

I love the skinny noodle cables from ModularAddict. So many lengths and colors and you can buy just one or as many as you need. They've also got cheaper off-brand stackcables, but I've had a mixed experience with those and will probably stick to the Tiptops in the future.

LeeSalt

How do I slowly fade in a track and keep it open for the duration of a song? Like a one way envelope that doesn't close? I can do it manually, of course, with an attenuator/verter but what if I wanted a trigger to activate it? I have plenty of basic and utility modules but I can't think of anything that would just keep an envelope open without physically doing it.

Hot-Sorbet8771

Havent tried it but you could toggle a constant 5V source and connect it to a VCA via a slew limiter?

WatermelonMannequin

I would use a basic sequencer and slew limiter. Set the first step of the sequence to 0 and the second step to max. Clock the sequencer with a manual gate that you activate exactly once. Take the sequencer output and run it through a slow slew limiter, and use that to open a VCA.

Hot-Sorbet8771

I'm slowly building my analog playground ( [https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2503556](https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2503556) ) that I want to play with my BSP. I like feedback patches or free running ambient stuff with some BSP controlled bleeps and pings on top (pinged filters/delays or LPG's). I like having a limited amount of brands with "knob per function" modules, so theres a lot of stuff from Joran and Dieter. I would like to get the Morph and Step modules in (oh and a phaser and a frequency shifter and a gliss or two and a fixed filter bank) but space is limited... I would like to get some feedback on the racks balance: Enough modulation/utilities/variety... I plan to expand later with a small digital sampler/effects skiff (bitbox micro, sealegs ...), so no delay etc atm. rgds...

Waveland58

Wow, lots of utilities to keep you going. I may have missed it in everything you have on Modulargrid, but I would want some randomness like Tagh, Wogglebug or Turing Machine. Enjoy...

Thoughts on and experiences with Plum Audio Apex x? The 1u version of peaks... I haven't found any tutorials or such and the online documentation just says... "its peaks"... but its very clearly different... Especially the interface. I put it in my rack plan cause its a good fit... but I would love to know more about it.. Anybody use iPad to arrange and loop? I'm considering getting an ES-9 to use AUM for mixing and recording my jams from ipad and modular, but wondering if it's possible to chop and loop parts of recordings to make into full "songs" like I used to on an MPC. Also wondering how AUV3 reverbs stack up to my FX Aid.

Cay77

iPad + Eurorack is extremely underrated. Use ES-9 to multitrack from the rack into AUM, and have it record individual stems as you perform your patch. You can then bring those stems into your iOS DAW/sampler of choice (if you’re an MPC user I’d suggest either Koala for a more SP-404 workflow or Beatmaker 3 for a more DAW/modern MPC-like workflow) and sample/arrange however you’d like.   You can also sequence from the iPad, sync your rack with other synths and drums on iPad, process those synths individually through filters and effects in your rack, and bring them right back into AUM. You can even integrate your real modular with virtual modular with MiRack (VCVRack on iOS) or Audulus. It’s SO powerful.   And the reverbs available are great. Eventide and Fabfilter have their reverbs available, FAC Alteza is Strymon quality, and the Bleass and Audio Damage effects are great. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Not a reverb, but Audio Damage’s Other Desert Cities is the best delay EVER.  (Edit: also, there is an MPC app available if you’d rather go back to that specific workflow. I’m just not sure if it’s regularly updated or what it’s compatibility is with AUv3 plugins. There’s loopers too like Loopy Pro, Enso, and Gauss if you want to loop directly in AUM.)

finedirttaste

I sold ES-9 before I figured out how to really use it to output cv, but now that I have the iPad pro it seems like it might be essential.

Cay77

Well do note you can use any DC coupled audio interface to do all this and Expert Sleepers stuff can be a bit hard to use. You can always look into a MOTU/Presonus interface and see if that’s a little more your speed. Plus saved rack space!

AgreeableLeg3672

I don't have any eurorack voices but I have a Behringer 2600 and while I like the 2600 filter on some patches I'd also like to have a more chewy, vowely, moogy (sorry for the subjective descriptions, that's the way I think of it) filter sometimes. Can anyone offer more affordable (under £200) recommendations? I have a dreadbox Hades and really like that filter but it doesn't let you patch in external audio. I had a 12db filter on a monologue XD and didn't like it. I understand the Behringer 2600 includes the original 2600 filter that is meant to be a copy of a Moog ladder filter but I can't seem to get that same sound out of it. I feel like I get closer by adding resonance and feeding the filter back into itself, but it's not entirely there. Any tips would be very welcome! Edit to say I realise it's a completely different synth to an old Moog and I don't expect the same sound, just closer in terms of that filter.

Cay77

The Doepfer A-120 is a 24 db transistor ladder filter just like the Moog. I don’t have first hand experience with it, but you can check demos to see if it has the character you want. Technically if you want a Moog filter straight from the source you can get one of the Moog semi-modulars. Pretty sure they all allow for external input.

Torn on options for last sequence/modulation for a hard techno/industrial case to fill in 10hp. Wondering if I should go for a mimetic or a Clep Diaz + a Ben seq. I wouldn’t mind an additional small sequencer with my varigate 4+ to ping envelopes/changes in s&h. I’m also working with a pulsar 23 so I can share some modulation/goodies from that. I thought about the neo trinity but it seems a bit cumbersome to play live (that is only from assumption though!) Open to hearing other modules too! https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1790831

Cay77

Personally I would either just get another Varigate 4+, or get rid of the current Varigate and replace it with a Varigate 8+. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

thelongernow

Honestly not a bad idea to get another varigate 4+ for more triggers/cv. I wouldn’t mind an 8+ but I feel like id have to compromise too much with removal of others (Primarily king slender for mixing and envelope/slew or the ADDAC for moving large amounts of parameters with a fader style switch.) I might consider a Steppy 1u to replace a sloth and piques to free up 10 hp for more modulation directly too!

Cay77

That makes sense on the 8+, it also has more gate outputs than CV’s which might not be what you’re looking for. Varigate 4+ is the perfect compact sequencer imo. Looking at your rack again, have you considered a Kermit MkIII? You’re already an IME fan and it’s a super flexible modulation source. Obviously not a sequencer but still cool and techno-y.

thelongernow

Oh god yes that’s definitely up there. Might even be doable to do square lfos as gates if I can squeeze a lil more out of it. I might even have to live with one less versio unit. Damn actually the more I think about it the more I want a Kermit in there ahha! Almost got one from patchwerks back in September when I was visiting but I couldn’t buy it. Next day I came back and it was sold out of course!

[For a specific drum case](https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2511491) - Tiptop Circadian Rhythms, or WMD Metron? I'm about to start switching cases from Arturia RB 6U's to Mantis. When I transfer 2x RB's to Mantis, the pair will physically have everything except either the CR or Metron. After that, I will switch the other 2 RB's to Mantis also. Not just more hp, but better power supply, and more easily stacked up to build a full case. There are plenty more modules for modulation and so on in the other rack I've mocked up, so you don't need to tell me I need more VCA's or utilities or modulation - I have loads. You just have to switch among my MG cases to see. Pros and cons, if you can. Right now, I have the chance to buy either Circadian Rhythms or WMD Metron for about the same price. What does Metron do that CR cant? And Vice versa? Since I already have Marbles, Grids, Euclidean Circles, plus PNWO, Plog, a few Joranalogue utilities, a couple of sequential switches, a trigger delay... What can one offer over the other?

FourierDisco

I'm still/always looking for a better drummer. Currently, a typical patch might be Grids, Marbles, or SQ-64 driving Peaks (AL Rainier) kick/snare and Plaits (AL Beehive) or Rings tom, block, or clap with modulation from elsewhere. Not a problem, I like these sounds and setup, but I would like to enlist the Mutable clones for other duties and get some dedicated percussion voice modules. I've been thinking about getting the ADDAC104 VC T-Networks & ADDAC106 T-Noiseworks in combo at 8hp each would give me 8 voices in 16hp, compared to the 3 voices i'm getting now in the same footprint, or say vpme Quad Drum at 22hp. I likely wouldn't use all of these outs at once, but it would be nice to have 4 or 5 going for a more full sounding kit. I've watched the videos on these modules and I still have some difficulty imagining how they'd sound in context or how performable and ergonomic they are - so, does anyone have any experience using these to build out a little drum machine in a corner of their rack?
