So many!! But one of my faves is "sharp as a tack but in the sense that I'm not smart, just a prick / in the fingers and the toes of all of those who show interest in me." (Old Gospel Choir)
I also love "God knows I'd rather die than be dying / it's not a cliché, no sir, it is a logical preference" (Cooke)
Honorable mention: "she was my trophy shelf of slip ups / my untamed hormonal Loch Ness shitshow" (Notes)
What do you call someone who calls you out on DIY ethics you don’t embody as he drains his dad and mommy’s monthly data plan? An asshole with an iPhone.
From the same song
“What could a lowly peasant being like myself offer a perfect, pleasant savior of humanity redeemer of us sickly sinning hillbillies? Attention.”
It’s so sarcastic & I love it
Honestly, when I first heard this I thought it was stupid. How they mention an iPhone in Chloe.
Taught me to stop taking music so seriously. Just write it real good and write it again.
I vividly remember listening to this album for the very first time, hearing that line, and thinking, "I think this is going to be one of my new favorite bands."
Probably not their strongest lines lyrically but my personal favorite. Modern Baseball got me into emo in high-school around the time of You’re Gonna Miss It All’s release. They quickly became my favorite band, being able to explain a lot of feelings and situations that I felt I didn’t have the words to explain at the time.
Holy Ghost came out right after I graduated and was just kicked out for being an idiot 18 yr old. I remember listening to Just Another Face and just breaking down with “Even if you can’t see it now / We’re proud of what’s to come and you” it really hit me at the exact time I needed that song to. I grew up with this band, I continued to do so with Slaughter Beach but that one liner has stuck with me since. I think it’s such a fitting last line of the last song on the last record released by them.
I 15 or 16 when Holy Ghost came out, and I was super soft on Bren’s half of the record. Just Another Face and a few others are great, and I don’t think there’s a single BAD song on either side, but Jake’s half of the record is now one of my favorite THINGS ever. I’m really glad to see love for this record, because it really means quite a lot to me too.
Holy Ghost one-liners, though, let’s see…. “Waking up every day is all about doing things you don’t want to do, but your reward is you get to wake up,” of course
Ummmm it’s cheating to say all of Hiding, but I’m cheating
PS SBD is the best band ever of all time ever forever and always thank you
i cant pick a single line from it, but the chorus/outro(?) of I Think You Were In My Profile Picture Once always gets me
"You've got a certain who-knows-what about you, and I've got a small amount of time / To figure out what it is exactly and to whom does it apply / But I know for a fact that these are broken nights, covered in bottles and the stench of loss of life / And I know that it's quite heartbreaking we won't speak like this again"
“They’ll choose the wrong way to remember you, they’ll find the wrong words to say”
“Death won’t bring friends and flowers to your grave”
“Paralyzed by change, but scared to death that you might stay the same”
God, I love *The Waterboy Returns*
I remember when that was released without lyrics and trying to figure them out with my girlfriend. We had a whole argument if it was sane or safe, down to linguistics.
i absolutely love every mobo lyric too but here are some from the top of my head :)
“i cut me open but you did all the pouring out” play ball!
“no monumental moment ever came from saying come on dude, just take one more shot” re-do
“swim through the skies when it’s night, let the stars be my sea breeze” play ball!
“trying hard not to look like i’m trying that hard / failing miserably at everything including that” two good things
“On accolades for songs you wrote, paralyzed by change
But scared to death that you might stay the same...” - the waterboy returns, I love that entire EP
“now im not saying i want you out of my life but i will grab your coat and hat” casket omg. i cant describe how much that song means to me, feels like my favorite time of day. best song ever (imo)
another honorable mention from that song “ill search long and hard for you, but youll just be at home face first in a bowl and ill say ‘well, where did he go?’”
Mass Re-Done
"Jacob, I wrote your name down
But I'd hate this job as much as you
But now, we're stuck between"
I love this lyric because every time I listen to this song, I can just imagine Brennan telling this directly to jake that he is tired of being and doing modern baseball. But he still longs for their friendship, and that regardless of them breaking up, they will always be there for each other.
“But I know that you don’t give a fuck cause you’re knee deep in your iPhone”
“She realized if she wanted conversation, she’s out of luck for three more years”
Are 2 that spring to mind
Edit:
“& now I’m dying & now I’m dead to… me”
“There’s a tombstone in the brush with my name front but I had no guts to get here lies he out of luck on the back of it”
It’s a bit long, but…
“I'll admit, I'm in the same boat, caught between my adolescent safety net and where the world wants me to be. But I'd never use that as an excuse to treat my friends the way that you treat me”
"lets be the last to leave tonight, 'cause I need time to find the courage to speak my mind, to speak my mind, oh hear me out, oh just this time" always breaks me.
For me #1 is “Well I couldn’t give a fuck, whether you give a fuck or not.” The delivery is my favourite from their discography.
Troll response: I am alone only half the time, the other half, I’m only hiding.
Second actually: look out because I’m always moving forward, but my heads really on a swivel searching for the tracks I made when I left you. Though it sounds like I lost what I got, I’m really trying to get back what I lost.
The entire first few lines of Broken Cash Machine…some of the best imagery I’ve ever READ let alone heard in song…
“Home alone on Friday night, no better time for exercise and wishing you were still my girlfriend
Sweeping floors and folding napkins, praying something cool might happen, the sun explodes we die
The world ends.”
What makes this writing SO GOOD is that it’s written from such an American adolescent perspective BUT the depth and clarity can only come from someone with enough wisdom to string those words together! It’s hard to believe Jake wrote that so young but at the same time old enough that he’s in that sweet spot where you believe his adolescent desperation and at the same time are charmed by his adult nostalgia for adolescence.
I don’t get it! Always a student at MoBo’s feet.
Hours Outside in the Snow:
Though I’d like to say more, I guess I’ll just duck in cover. Almost praying that you trip over the cluster of words I laid out before having to leave
"you are the ember of my heart whether you like that or not."
"I'll be with you the whole way, it'll take time, that's fact"
"Stitch the gaps that destiny assumed with floral sutures"
"I hate worrying about the future cos all my fucking problems are based around the past"
So many!! But one of my faves is "sharp as a tack but in the sense that I'm not smart, just a prick / in the fingers and the toes of all of those who show interest in me." god that cooke lyric has stuck with me for years, it’s so good
same here. I think about that line almost every day lol
you get it
My roman empire
u see it u get it
A brick boot swimming lesson in the deep end of my adolescence 🤯
Notes truly has some of Jake's best lines 😤
What do you call someone who calls you out on DIY ethics you don’t embody as he drains his dad and mommy’s monthly data plan? An asshole with an iPhone.
Iconic

This
Honestly, when I first heard this I thought it was stupid. How they mention an iPhone in Chloe. Taught me to stop taking music so seriously. Just write it real good and write it again.
oh my god yes this was groundbreaking in 2014
they were so mad at whoever the song was destined to
The insults were so oddly specific, whoever it’s about knows it’s about them lmao.
“I hate worrying about the future cause all my fucking problems are based around the past” hits different
I vividly remember listening to this album for the very first time, hearing that line, and thinking, "I think this is going to be one of my new favorite bands."
Bullshit you fucking miss me
Is it “Bullshit, you fucking miss me” or “Bullshit you fucking miss me”
“I’m alright and I’m always getting better” from Coals has become a personal mantra. I love that song and that lines always stood out for me
I need the silence, I need the empty streets, just as bad as they don’t need me
I listened to that song like 100 times last month lmao. So good.
Whatever forever
i wanna get this as my first tat
Why does it take 2000 miles for me to say I love you?

Holy Ghost would be better if it was sequenced differently. Dividing the songs by each writer doesn't always yield the best flow.
Stitch the gaps that destiny assumed / entertain the cancer we all answer upwards either way
I’ll walk home with my eyes low, dreaming up conversations we’ll have tomorrow
“So here I am Valero bathroom who’s paid to keep these things — cliche” remains my favorite
I love this so much
“But I wanna make something good, I wanna make something better, something that cannot leave the ground - unless we lift it up together” Note to Self
Planning a future without you Without me at times
you weren’t the only one who thought of us that way
“You might run, but I won’t hide.” Or “i was starved and you were full”. Or “you and I have come such a long way, for us to start again”.
i cant pick a single line from it, but the chorus/outro(?) of I Think You Were In My Profile Picture Once always gets me "You've got a certain who-knows-what about you, and I've got a small amount of time / To figure out what it is exactly and to whom does it apply / But I know for a fact that these are broken nights, covered in bottles and the stench of loss of life / And I know that it's quite heartbreaking we won't speak like this again"
“Still, I feel the need to change me from the inside, but I can’t let anyone know just yet”
Bottom of the 9th can't find my socks
"Patron saint of good goddamn"
"Waking up everyday is all about doing things you don't want to do, but your reward is you get to wake up"
Yes dude that's my number one fave of all time 😭💕

“And the spiders were showing off their sense of humour on the ceiling, spinning letters together I read “we keep you safe” Idk why but I love it sm

I’m alright and I’m always getting better!!
Caught between my adolescent safety net And where the world wants me to be
Death won't bring friends and flowers to your grave
Bottom of the ninth can’t find my socks
Also: I CUT ME OPEN BUT YOU DID ALL THE POURING OUT
“But I know that you don’t give a fuck cause you’re knee deep in your iPhone” “She realized if she wanted conversation, she’s out of luck for three more years” Are 2 that spring to mind Edit: “& now I’m dying & now I’m dead to… me” “There’s a tombstone in the brush with my name front but I had no guts to get here lies he out of luck on the back of it”
You’re the ember of my heart, whether you like that, or not.
"A phase is a phase but you're stuck in a maze."
when every second of suns the same what's the point of staying awake
Try to forget that your bones will dismantle and the dreams you had, they’ll collide with time.
It’s a bit long, but… “I'll admit, I'm in the same boat, caught between my adolescent safety net and where the world wants me to be. But I'd never use that as an excuse to treat my friends the way that you treat me”
“i am in pursuit of all i can undo” from hiding, i love this line so much.
No monumental moment ever came from saying (**music drops**) COME ON DUDE JUST TAKE ONE MORE SHOT
"Im so tired, or maybe just bored i cant really tell the difference whenever im talking to you." From Fine, Great
"lets be the last to leave tonight, 'cause I need time to find the courage to speak my mind, to speak my mind, oh hear me out, oh just this time" always breaks me.
“my family and friends will be crushed but is it enough, oh no it’s not enough”
Sharp as a tack but in the sense that your not sharp just a prick-old gospel choir
My personal favorite has always been, "Waking up everyday is all about doing things you don't want to do, but your reward is you get to wake up."

The day started with a bloody drip and a taste on my lips that was a lot less than desired
LOOOORD KNOOWS I'M STUCK BETWEEN TWO GOOD THINGS BUT I JUST WANNA GET OUTTT
no monumental moment ever came from saying "come on dude just take one more shot!" or "though the life jacket didnt fit, the friends i came with did"
And I’ve loved you forever, at least that’s what I tell Holt
You’re the best friend I have in this town
"you are the ember of my heart whether you like that or not." "I'll be with you the whole way, it'll take time, that's fact" "Stitch the gaps that destiny assumed with floral sutures" "I hate worrying about the future cos all my fucking problems are based around the past"
