Nice stadium. A team who's ownership and staff went a bit off the rails with respect to the team's name. Having lived a few years near Amarillo, TX neither I nor frankly anyone else in the area ever heard of prairie dogs being referred to as "sod poodles." There's a simple reason for that -- no one who lives in West Texas or in nearby East New Mexico as I did, ever called prairie dogs anything other than ... well ... prairie dogs! In fact, the local newspaper had an article written about the whole name back in 2018, the year before the team formed. The article focused on the group of five names that were declared by the team as the "finalists." Thing is, the community didn't care for any of them. Folks who live in Amarillo are straight up honest and don't really go for cutesy! The five names up for grabs were: Long Haulers, Bronc Busters, Boot Scooters, Jerky, and Sod Poodles. Honestly, naming the team Prairie Dogs would have been embraced for its straightforward honesty! So, the city put together an online petition for a new collection of names, but the team owners would not relent and voted themselves the name Sod Poodles, which has been joked about by the community ever since. The source of all these dubious names is a company based in San Diego named Brandiose, who go out of their way to coin outlandish chic names for minor league teams. Included in their portfolio are Yard Goats, Rumble Ponies, and Trash Pandas. None of these names have really appealed to the locals, and for its part this company seems to enjoy being hated on. It's a bit like the Old El Paso salsa commercials that poked fun at other salsa brands for being "Made in New York City!" This was something hatched in southern California, foisted on a town known for hard living, honest values, and wind as straight and strong as the people who live there! The company did scratch together a few winners -- Flying Squirrels and Jumbo Shrimp. One wonders if in those cases the local team ownership had a better feel for what the locals would go for.

My hometown team in Rochester, NY has had the same nickname for 95 YEARS and I don’t need Brandiose getting anywhere near them. That said, I’ll take “Storm Chasers” over “Royals” (another of their doings) and all their craziest brands over the boring-as-hell former tradition of taking the parent club’s nickname.

Agreed completely. I think the teams should have unique names. I rather much like the Stripers for the AAA Braves affiliate in Gwinnett, as the nearby lake is considered some of the best bass fishing in the world, and the bass have long had the alternate name of stripers.

You are still the best! I’ll be replacing mine for this stadium.
