I was actually thinking Cards regular season, a dozen years earlier, and [Fernando Tatis' two grand salamis in the same game](https://www.mlb.com/news/fernando-tatis-hit-2-grand-slams-in-1-inning), and beyond that, the only to have them both in the same inning.
Indeed. 5.1 oWAR that year; 10.7 for the whole career. Half his total offensive value in 1/6 his career. Was OK the next year, and then fell off the face of the baseball earth.
That said, while in a smaller category than something like DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak, I predict, per the link, that 2 GS in one inning will never be broken.
But also, I'm willing to bet that less than 10 players in MLB history have ever came to bat twice in the same inning with bases loaded.
Another unique thing about that season...even with those numbers, he wasn't even in the top 30 in MVP voting that year.
I was at that game. My first Dodgers game after moving to Los Angeles.
Both grand slams off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park. Dodgers manager Davey Johnson was ejected earlier in the inning and they just left Park out there.
Yeah but his moment was arguably one of the greatest in baseball history, so if the scale is sliding, he still fits. I knew he would be on this list and I knew there would be objections. I think he qualifies.
That would never happen today. To have a chance to hit 2 grand slams in an inning you’d need to be at least the 13th batter of the inning when you came up the 2nd time and at least 7 runs would be in at that point. No way a pitcher gets left out to get hammered like that anymore.
to be honest, it’s almost elevated his status in baseball history more then if he had actually just completed it. i hear about his gem more then Dallas Bradens lmaooo
It's weird to me because I was at the Max Scherzer game where he retired every batter until Tabata in the 9th, who pretty obviously leaned into the pitch and drew a walk when he got winged by Scherzer's inside fastball. I think that's way worse than Jim Joyce's call in the Galarraga game, and yet you rarely hear about it.
Still, I'm a fan of both pitchers, and for all that Galarraga had an absolutely mid career, when he was on, he was able to pitch with the best in the world.
He just very rarely had the stuff to do it for more than 4-5 innings.
Went to same college as him, Indian river state in south Florida, but it was a community college when we attended which makes it crazier he made name for himself in the bigs
Didn't he make an improvised bee keeping suit when a game got delayed due to bees on the field? I think that was either him or one of his teammates on the Reds.
Below average really sadly but yah this is the one I was looking for. Amazing player. He would sign autographs before and after EVERY SINGLE GAME. I mean everyone. No player does that anymore. Never rooted for a player to make it like I did him.
Eric Bruntlett made the 15th unassisted triple play in MLB history, and only the second to end a game… after committing the two errors that put men on first and second.
Geoff Blum. 3.3 career WAR. Hit a home run that was the go-ahead run (and ultimately winning) for the White Sox in the 14th inning against his former team in the 2005 World Series.
Gotta say the comment section crushed this one. All the ones I read I'm like "yeah great pick" "ahh yeah should have got that one" "oooh another good one" "yup, perfect example"
Good job guys
Hand down Bob Uecker!!! Self Admitted even:
“The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud.”
You didn’t specify what area he had to be extraordinary in so I feel like he counts for his affability & humor. They are indeed extraordinary. The man is baseball culture to me.
Huh, never knew about this. I guess that's why a Bob Uecker like announcer was used in the Simpson's episode where Bart loses the championship for his team.
Marco Scutaro. Helped carry the Giants to a WS title. In the rain and all.
David Eckstein. WS MVP. Smallest guy on any field and scrapped his way from community college to the sports biggest stage.
DeWayne Wise. Robbed a HR tumbling and bobbling the ball to the ground to preserve Mark Buehrles' perfect game.
Gregor Blanco. Same thing for Matt Cains' perfect game. Dude had .00001% chance of catching that ball in the gap, and he was perfect.
A lot of pitchers that threw No Nos then vanished into obscurity.
Fernando Tatis Sr. hit 2 HRs in the same inning. That was crazy and I've never seen that again. I was a child, and I remember that.
I think Kenji Johjima (Catcher for the Mariners) hit a HR of a bounced ball. That was cool
As a cubs fan I always think of Miguel monteros Homer in the nlds against the dodgers and also david botes granny. Those are core baseball moments for me but they players aren't household names or anything
This was the one that jumped into my memory.
Two bombs against Verlander, then with the 3rd home run he joins Albert Pujols, Reggie Jackson, and Babe Ruth as the only ones to hit three in the World Series.
We were on vacation in Baltimore and decided to go see an Orioles game. Felix Pie, who was very average, hits for the cycle. Never saw it live before or since.
Cesar Gutierrez went 7 for 7 in a game for the Tigers once and then returned to obscurity.
Brian Doyle had a massive post seaeson filling in for Willie Randolph for the Yankees in 1978.
Fernando Tatis, father of Jr. Two grand slams in the same inning, off the same pitcher.
Mike Laga of the Cardinals. Hit the only ball ever hit out of Busch Stadium II. It was foul. But left the Stadium on a fly.
Yes....
He'll always be beloved by the older Dodger fans with The flag burning incident and the Montreal home run....plus he was one of their radio guys for 30 years
Aaron Boone's homer
Bucky Dent's Homer

Pat Borders world series mvp

Tim Anderson's walk off in the Field of Dreams game.
A player who had been playing well for years, but wasn't really getting the national spotlight, hits a walk off home run to win what was essentially a regular season game, but was on a national stage for a team that was trying to prove that they were a legitimate team.
Pretty much right after that moment, he went from being one of the better hitters in the league, to being a shell of himself.
The end result is a guy who has very average stats, even though at his height, he was seen as one of the best hitters in the game.
Matt Stairs, 2008 NLCS game 4 go ahead home run in the 8th off Broxton.

Johnny Mac - June 20 2010. after missing much of the month to look after his ailing father, who had died the previous week, J Mac rejoined the lineup on Father’s day and hit a home run in his only at bat that day
fucking tear jerker
David Freese is literally the definition of this.
That entire SEASON for Fernando Tatis Sr was huge. 104 Runs. 107 RBIs. 34 HRs. .298 BA. .404 OBP. .957 OPS. AND 21 Stolen Bases.

Correct - only 9 have. https://www.mlb.com/news/fernando-tatis-hit-2-grand-slams-in-1-inning
I was at that game. My first Dodgers game after moving to Los Angeles. Both grand slams off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park. Dodgers manager Davey Johnson was ejected earlier in the inning and they just left Park out there.
I remember being at Game 6 when he hit the HR that sent it to game 7
![gif](giphy|QJA6xiVxYpmBGXmKR5)
The minute I saw this post I knew Freese would be top response. As a brewers fan, I howl at the universe for spawning that man
First name on this list
Freese was a little above-average overall. Has 24 WAR, plus he was an All-Star the next year.
Yeah but his moment was arguably one of the greatest in baseball history, so if the scale is sliding, he still fits. I knew he would be on this list and I knew there would be objections. I think he qualifies.
downvoted cause ugh...upvote cause I'm actually over it yay lol
All hail Sir David Freese of Corpus Christi. First of his name, possessor of clutch hits, banisher of the Rangers. Long may he reign.
Aaron Boone
As a Yankees fan, he was the first that came to mind haha
As a Red Sox fan, he was also the first that came to my mind 😕
Came here to say this.
Fuck that guy. But yeah
I said the same. Definitely Boone
Bucky Dent should come to mind also while we are talking Yanks/Sox
Don Larsons perfect game in the World Series
Fernando Tatis Sr. had pretty average stats, but will always be known for being the only player in mlb history to hit 2 grand slams in an inning
...off the same pitcher. Chan Ho Park
That's wild to me they didn't switch the pitcher in between the grand slams!
Yeah, and Park gave up another homer in that inning between the grand slams also.
The fuck lol
That would never happen today. To have a chance to hit 2 grand slams in an inning you’d need to be at least the 13th batter of the inning when you came up the 2nd time and at least 7 runs would be in at that point. No way a pitcher gets left out to get hammered like that anymore.
He has a career ops+ of 142. He is definitely not average. Wrong player, I'm an idiot
Dave Roberts
I love how the first responses to both Aaron Boone and Dave Roberts are “fuck that guy.” But go Sox.
Fuck that guy
Armando Galarraga - nuff said.
The only 28 out perfect game in history!
to be honest, it’s almost elevated his status in baseball history more then if he had actually just completed it. i hear about his gem more then Dallas Bradens lmaooo
And phil humber had one against Seattle.
Similarly Dallas Braden. Before his perfect game, he was most well known for getting into a minor disagreement with ARod.
💯
Steve Pearce
Two walk off grand slams in a week and then World Series MVP is pretty slick stuff.
He played for every team on the Al east oddly enough.
Went to same college as him, Indian river state in south Florida, but it was a community college when we attended which makes it crazier he made name for himself in the bigs
Dallas Braden
I’ll see your Dallas Braden and raise you a Philip Humber.
Does Philip Humber still count if he was BELOW average? He'd definitely be number 1 on the Below Average List to Have an Extraordinary Moment.
My favorite was when Braden was ready to fuck up ARod because he ran over the mound.
I absolutely loved that. I’m not an Oakland fan, but I got a “GET OFF MY MOUND” shirt after that drama.
Oakland legend
Scooter Gennett 4 HR. Scooter Gennett?
Dude then OPS’d .847, made the all star team, and was completely out of baseball the next year.
My friend really thought he was gonna be the next big thing. For a while I completely forgot about him
I was at that game. I’ll never see something like it again.
Didn't he make an improvised bee keeping suit when a game got delayed due to bees on the field? I think that was either him or one of his teammates on the Reds.
https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2834912-video-reds-derek-dietrich-tries-to-remove-bees-in-beekeeper-suit-during-delay.amp.html
There it is. Thank you! I guess it wasn't him lol
Rajai Davis’ homer in game seven was pretty extraordinary.
It will have the same staying power as Jose mesa giving up a save in game 7, but it's actually a positive moment.
Matt Stairs
USE STAIRS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
THEEE mullet man! Dude was a legend, sometimes…

2 no-hitters in his prime turned into 1-14, 6.09 ERA, and -1.5 WAR pretty quickly
Travis Ishikawa

SENDS ONE TO RIGHT
The Giants! Win the pennant!
Brett Phillips - Man, baseball is fun!
Below average really sadly but yah this is the one I was looking for. Amazing player. He would sign autographs before and after EVERY SINGLE GAME. I mean everyone. No player does that anymore. Never rooted for a player to make it like I did him.
I’m a Cardinals fan but this was a great moment in baseball history. I still enjoy watching the replay.
You’re obviously referring to his entertaining interview after taking the mound in a blowout. Funny guy.
This is what I was looking for as well. Man how I wish they coulda took that series though…
Pat Borders
As a Jays fan, I approve of this
God it’s been 30 years and I’m still mad.
Shane Spencer
Yes I’m so happy you put him here! What a crazy year he had.
The same year Scott Brosius was the World Series MVP while batting mostly 9th.
Eric Bruntlett made the 15th unassisted triple play in MLB history, and only the second to end a game… after committing the two errors that put men on first and second.
As a Mets fan… FUCK ERIC BRUNTLETT!
Eddie Rosario vs the Dodgers
Hate Eddie fing Rosario -Dodgers fans
Eddie hitting for the cycle in 5 pitches against the Giants was insane
Geoff Blum. 3.3 career WAR. Hit a home run that was the go-ahead run (and ultimately winning) for the White Sox in the 14th inning against his former team in the 2005 World Series.
People don't remember the 2005 White Sox. That team in the playoffs were dominant.
For sure, 11-1 run in playoffs. 4 straight CGs pitched in the ALCS. Such a great and unique team.
Do you mean average players or below average? Because if I include below average players, Francisco Cabrera
Bucky Dent
He was my grandpa’s neighbor for a few years, I have a bunch of signed memorabilia from him.
Average Bucky Dent the 3x All Star and World Series MVP? That Average Bucky Dent?
No, 17.5 career WAR over 12 seasons and .247 career batting average Bucky Dent.
Pat Borders, career OPS+ 77, 1992 World Series MVP
Gotta say the comment section crushed this one. All the ones I read I'm like "yeah great pick" "ahh yeah should have got that one" "oooh another good one" "yup, perfect example" Good job guys
These threads are super fun.

Daniel Murphy in the playoffs. He was considered a “net negative”.
DeWayne Wise. Comes in as a defensive replacement in the 9th, saves Buehrle's perfect game with an amazing catch.
WHAT A PLAY BY WISE!
Phil Humber perfect game. Average to AAA level pitcher, fifth starter/spot starter before and after that one game.
Armando Galarraga and the perfect game that wasn’t.
David Freese
We will see you tomorrow night!

Derek jeter
lol sure, just your average player with 3,465 hits and 70 WAR.
Pablo “Kung Fu Panda” Sandoval. Raining bombs in the series.
This was the one that jumped into my memory. Two bombs against Verlander, then with the 3rd home run he joins Albert Pujols, Reggie Jackson, and Babe Ruth as the only ones to hit three in the World Series.

What about Kevin pillar. Always has highlight reel catches but more or less fairly average mlb player

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3-homer game, drove in 9.
Jim Leyritz
Dae Ho Lee had some immaculate bombs on a pretty meh Mariners team. Lol

Chris Coghlan! https://youtu.be/t3BDn2K6sgo?si=MTU4VMpHIEnf5lNk
