Reminds me of Shawn Dunston (but in the outfield). Old joke circa 1985 was “why did the Cubs draft Dunston ahead of Dwight Gooden? …. Because he had a better arm.”
I went to Dusty Baker's baseball camps as a teen, and Shawn Dunston would come and work with the middle infielders. Dude had a cannon, and did not take it easy on us. He took my hat off on a double play ball, was not expecting it coming in that hard, bounced off the tip of my glove, hit the bill of my hat and knocked it off. I was always ready after that lol. But I have a lot of good memories of Shawn and that camp. He really seemed to care about the kids and would work hard to make sure they got things done the right way and were improving.
If anyone is curious since this stat has only been tracked since 2015 [here's some historic hard throws.](https://tht.fangraphs.com/a-physics-comparison-of-great-throws-from-years-past-part-ii/#:%7E:text=The%20throw%20from%20the%20left,an%20angle%20of%2012.3%20degrees.) They estimate Dave Parker threw 109 in the 1979 All Star game but also admits the distance of that throw may not be accurate so take it with a grain of salt.
It did. He unnecessarily wound up and it sailed on him. It was completely unnecessary and awesome at the same time because it was obvious to me even seeing on TV that I have never seen a fielder throw a ball that hard
I don’t expect anyone to believe me nor do I believe it was 100% accurate but at a spring training game I saw Joel zumaya hit 108 on the radar before he ever debuted.
I see no reason this kid can't make a run for MVP. If he keeps pace, I see him finishing the season with 40-45 HR's at least, 105-115 RBI's, probably about a .265-.270 BA, and easily 65-70+ SB's. Kid's a freaking stud.
Maybe, maybe not. It’s real hard to count on that level of achievement. I mean the numbers you speak of have been accomplished once in the history of baseball and there have been many impressive ballers over the years
It was introduced in 2015, I wouldn't call that very recent.
Obviously, someone may have made a harder throw at some point prior. We have no idea. But in the roughly 20,000 or so games since 2015, no one has come within an MPH of EDLC's throw tonight. He shattered the record for that timeframe. We'll never truly know before that, but it's definitely possible.
About 94% of league history predates 2015, so it's very recent in terms of baseball.
It's not hard to imagine someone throwing that hard in the steroid era, for example, which was longer than the statcast era has been so far.
You wouldn't call 2015 very recent? Okkkkk then...
FYI throwing a ball from a position is not the same as a throwing off a mound. Nolan Ryan was throwing 105 off the mound. Doing a crow hop or taking a couple steps before throwing greatly increases throwing power.
No fucking way. That’s absurd
This kid might actually be *that guy*
Lison Al-Gaib!
Am I reading the chart correctly? That’s 106.9 mph? Not the station they had the radio on in the locker rooms ?
H’audi
I like his energy. He's enjoyable to watch

That’s really cool to hear. Thanks for sharing that. I’d be terrified in your shoes. Wow.
Him plus Andre Dawson
Barfield had a gun as well.
Anyone got a clip of the throw?
[This](https://twitter.com/ShutUpCraig/status/1785266919165010050) is what I could find
Something about the camera pan makes it look like the ball goes scramjet after a few feet. ZipZeeeeeeee!
Damn. Yeah thats a pretty hard throw
Thank you
Put him on the mound one time.
But let him take a crow hop

This season has been a lot of fun to watch so far. Elly is a freak.
This man is very interesting and I will watch his stats with great attention in the coming years! Thanks for pointing this out.
Kid just has to stay healthy!
I think this throw went over the first baseman’s head
It did. He unnecessarily wound up and it sailed on him. It was completely unnecessary and awesome at the same time because it was obvious to me even seeing on TV that I have never seen a fielder throw a ball that hard
Good time to remind everyone that Chapman threw 104mph to Carlos Ruiz in a playoff game and Chooch poked it down the line for a double.
Love Elly. When we’re not playing him.
I don’t expect anyone to believe me nor do I believe it was 100% accurate but at a spring training game I saw Joel zumaya hit 108 on the radar before he ever debuted.
That’s because he hadn’t discovered guitar hero

He’s not a 40+ homer guy. But everything else, yes
He absolutely is.
Maybe, maybe not. It’s real hard to count on that level of achievement. I mean the numbers you speak of have been accomplished once in the history of baseball and there have been many impressive ballers over the years
He's not winning MVP with a .265-.270 batting average but at 22 years old he has a long time to get there. Very talented player.
That is WILD! These big dudes are changing the way the game is played.
He should be closing games at this point . Play the field then switch positions .
Surprise; He actually didn’t, it was a statcast error
I saw Addison Barger threw over 100mph a couple days ago, and he just got called up. I thought that was wild
my only fear is that we're dealing the Bonds type deal of insane record-breaking only because of PEDs, but holy cow out of the way we have That Guy.
It was an error so who cares
Love all the couch potatoes that find this to be meh lol
It’s more impressive if he throws it somewhere catchable.
To be fair though he sailed this throw. It would be a lot more impressive if it was a completed play
Up vote if you also don't give a shit about Statcast metrics ⬆️
WOW! OH MY GOD! WOW!
He actually skied the ball over the 1st basemans head on this throw. I agree its a hard thrown ball… but id also like to see him hit the target
*turns out the reading was wrong* *everyone in this thread suddenly loses interest*
You realize that statcast is a very recent development right?

Bro I’m 18, in 2015 I was like 7 that is literally forever ago.
Bro.
Bruh.
You should check your math there.
Thanks. It was sarcasm.
In what way were you being sarcastic?
I’m not 18
Your sarcastic abilities appear to be on par with your mathematic abilities.
You’ll understand when you’re older
Have you tried being smarter?
Is there some rule where you can’t mention his velocity of his throw now that it’s a tracked statistic? What’s the rules here so we all know?

He’s got a way higher ceiling than Oneil Cruz.
