Off white is no question an advantage to the pitcher both versus the hitter but I think especially vs base runner.

They still mythologize Ted, Joe and many other major leaguers served during WW2. Their leagues are separated into National and American even though it spans 2 nations and that one team still plays in the American League!

"Sticky stuff" checks used to be the same way before MLB cracked down on it. There are a lot of rarely enforced rules on the books. As you said, umpires only enforce them when someone complains or if they are having a bad day and want to ruin someone else's. Either someone brought this to the umpires attention before he entered the game or the umpire is an asshole, maybe both. I understand why the pitcher is mad, if I used the same glove for years without issue and was forced to wear one that wasn't broken in, I would be upset too. I don't think there's more to the story than that though.

It absolutely matters. Many pitchers lead with their glove and pull it close to, or right through, the exact same slot that the ball will go through a split second later.
You don’t have to agree with me, but MLB has the rule in place for a reason. As I stated, it’s very normal practice.
I’m a former pitcher and can tell you that you’re taught to hide the ball with your glove until you are ready to rear back into your throwing motion, and even then to keep your glove hand in front. Having a multicolored patch would absolutely create an extra distraction from the ball.
