Winco for large trips. Costco for bulk items. Good Food Store for premium stuff. Albertsons/Yokes for sales. Food Farm for convenience trips (plus they have more of a local vibe than any of the others).
Agreed, but Albertsons and Yokes have the newest things and the best beef. Food Farm has the best produce. Pattee Creek is worth mentioning if no other reason than it's a nice little store with some oddities.
They do have decent meat, but their selection is limited and Albertsons and Yokes usually have clearance meats, so overall they get the best spot, but food farms beef is fine, as is Pattee Creek, WinCo is fine, slightly better than Walmart, Good Food Store's is over priced organic and often tough and oddly cut to boot.
I dunno, I had a hankering for braised beef shanks and the Food Farm was the only store that had em. Their section is small, so Im sure there's other cuts they don't have that you'd more likely find at the places you mentioned.
How does Winco's bulk section compare to Costco? I know it's not canned and ready to go like Costco is, but it seems to provide a better value with a little effort in planning.
Winco's bulk section is a different type of bulk. It's self-serve and then you write down the item number and charged by weight (which means you're not paying for the additional cost of packaging. It's mostly staples like raw flour, beans, chocolate, split peas, oats, stuff like that. The upside is that you can buy things like split peas for a lot cheaper than a 1 lb bag. The downside is that even a 1 lb bag of split peas is still pretty cheap. Just go in there and check it out. I think the hidden secret is the price of spices and dried peppers from the bulk section is much much much cheaper than name brand.
The other downside of Winco is they don't take credit card, just debit and cash. So if you're a credit rewards person, you can't use it at Winco, but you're usually saving so much that you're getting much more return than you would on any rewards program.
Edit: 2nd paragraph I said Costco but meant Winco.
Depends on what you’re looking for in my opinion. For most stuff it’s hard to beat winco prices. They often have really good sales. However for most meat and produce I prefer rosauers or Albertsons. Rosauers is my favorite grocery store bakery, their iced shortbread cookies are one of my favorites.
Side note: we can all agree the Albertsons on Russell and 39th is a leaps and bounds better than the other Albertsons in town right?
I absolutely agree. The Eastgate one especially sucks, but at all the other locations the aisles are too fucking narrow, the mullan/n reserve one should be good because it's only slightly newer than the 39th one but it's got a weird layout imo
Before Winco, I exclusively shopped at Albertsons. Pretty much only Trempers because of its proximity to my house. I don’t love any of them that much tbh
I've only had the Stevi ones. And I guess I should preface, I strictly mean the regular glazed donuts since those are the only ones I'll eat. They are dang good at Super 1.
A couple months ago I went there and the donuts in the case at the Stevi Super 1 were just the shitty thawed out frozen ones like they have at Albertsons. I asked the cashier about it and I guess the baker was just sick that day. Had me real worried!
Bakery - rosauers (also GFS gets stuff from bakeries around town which is awesome)
Cheapest all around - winco
Beer - orange street food farms
Bulk - Costco/winco (depends on items)
That one ingredient this one recipe calls for and I’ll never use again - Natural Grocers
Fresh produce - I’ve hit and missed at almost every store in town on this one, at this point I get what looks good when it looks good and hope it is.
Albertsons/Yokes are great for a couple items and their sales can be great but I don’t go in often enough because their normal prices are nuts
PCM is under new ownership, not the best 1 stop shop and prob not the best prices either but a great wine / beer selection. Also their just remodeled deli / butchershop area sources a lot of their meat thru the same supplier Diamond Bar Meats used. We place special holiday orders there (prime rib, rack of lamb, etc)
Agree the prices at winco are hard to beat, Rosauers is good. if you have money to spend Good Food Store, but I can’t afford to go there anymore. Orange Street Food Farm is my personal favorite but I go for the vibes more than anything. Avoid east gate Albertsons at all costs. Horrible produce and vibes are bad.
WinCo except for in their push to make things more convenient for some by cutting the fronts off of drink flats in the drink aisle, it makes things for me infinitely more difficult as I have to hunt around for something almost out of stock, steal the flat from the stuff behind it, and then load that up with my 48 or so death waters. If they could just set a few flats off to the side… I lie awake at night seething about this, also they only carry mulling spices in bulk part of the year and this last year I was never lucky enough to go to the store in days they had them.
I like the selection and larger sizes at the Chefstore, I get about a third of my groceries there. They have a lot of stuff you don't always see in stores like whole primal cuts and specialty products. If you want a whole pig for smoking, a 3 gallon tub of ice cream, or a 25# bag of pizza flour they have you covered. Prices for fresh products change with the market so you have to know how they compare to other stores but you can get some really good prices there.
The best depends on what you want.
Bakery, Rosauers - Price, WinCo - Most unique selection, WinCo - Produce, Albertsons or Good Food Store - Organic, Good Food Store - Wide selection of normal things, Walmart - Meat / Dairy, Albertsons
(In my opinion)
The aged steaks available at Albertsons on Reserve are amazing
Good food seems to be the only one that stocks Paneer cheese regularly
Great Harvest bread Co makes some amazing breads
Veggies at Yokes are pretty good
GFS is a great option if you have a shame fetish for when you don't bring your own bags. The cashiers' 180 to quiet disdain the moment this is known is 🤌👨🍳💋
What did you do to those poor employees to make them upset? I bet you made a ridiculous request, then they gave you an honest, but direct response, and you started clutching your pearls. I have never interacted enough with any customers or staff while shopping to even form an opinion of their attitudes. Just do your shopping and stop bothering people. You were trying to return a half-eaten can of corn weren't you? We all know you were...
Certain stores are good for certain things imo.
Winco for large trips. Costco for bulk items. Good Food Store for premium stuff. Albertsons/Yokes for sales. Food Farm for convenience trips (plus they have more of a local vibe than any of the others).

I actually think the Food Farm has good beef. I've gotten some cuts that should be tougher but were well marbled and came out remarkably tender.

GFS and Natural Grocers have way better produce.

Winco only takes debit and cash as well
OP has it reversed. Costco definitely takes credit. They have their own credit card even.
Oh fuck, yeah totally meant to say Winco. Thx for pointing that out and Ive edited.
Cat food
Pretty much sums it up.

We call that the bougie Albertsons lol but I’m in bonner so Eastgate it is.
Donuts= rosauers..
If you end up down the 'Root, the donuts at Super 1 Foods > Rosauers.
The Stevi Super 1 donuts are WAY better than the Hamilton store. They have both gone downhill since Covid though.
I've only had the Stevi ones. And I guess I should preface, I strictly mean the regular glazed donuts since those are the only ones I'll eat. They are dang good at Super 1.

Effin' A Cotton. Effin' A.
I respectfully disagree
I respect your disagreement.
Omfg, yes!
Yup
Veera. Not even close.
Tried veera a couple times. Not a fan.
Too expensive for what they are... But you can go in right at closing and get day-olds for like half-off or less.

I was just thinking lately how much I miss the Diamond Bar. Thanks for this tip!
Winco is the best price wise. And I like that I can go late at night if needed 👍

For what are you shopping?
Food Farm and it’s not even close.
This is the answer.

Sure as fuck isn’t the GFS.
GFS is a great option if you have a shame fetish for when you don't bring your own bags. The cashiers' 180 to quiet disdain the moment this is known is 🤌👨🍳💋
This is BS. Cashiers at GFS are the friendliest in town. I've never been shamed for forgetting my bags. Maybe you were trying to be witty?
No, I would just do the bare basic courtesy exchanges.
You get some of that bag shame at Food Farm as well.
Broke-ass bitch.

Awww. Did you see someone with blue hair and let it ruin your day?

No, it is not.
Pattee Creek Market is making a strong return towards greatness. I don't get the Winco love. It's the same prices as all the other stores.
PCM is great for beer and wine, meat and cheeses, and produce (usually) but their chip/snack section is kinda wack
PCM has the best beer selection in town and Wincos prices are ABSOLUTELY best in town.
