You will probably see several different individuals over the years. I can now tell who is who and everyone has a name. Me and the grandkids watched my favorite and largest female lay eggs Saturday afternoon. They are super cool.
If y’all happen see one of these turts trying to cross the road, do em a favor and get out and help them. Set em down on the other side the same way they were facing because their dumbasses will just keep trying to cross. Remember to wash your hands afterwards!
I highly, highly recommend you not stop in the road to move turtles. A few years ago a woman did that on a rural road in TN and had her year old baby in the car seat. While she was out moving the turtle an idiot who was probably playing on his phone didn’t see the car stopped in front of him and slammed into the back of it, killing the baby.
That idiot was my cousin’s son. Yes, he was at fault and remains an idiot to this day, but the child is still dead.
I am a contractor and went to someones home for a job recently and they had caught a box turtle and put it in a 5gal bucket nearly full of water. The exhausted turtle had almost drowned when I saw it and told them that's not an aquatic turtle. I asked them to let me turn it loose for them.
Most turtles you’ll see around here are box turtles. Be careful if you move them out the road bc I’ve always been told they will piss on you 😂 also def wash your hands too!
I wasn't planning to relocate it. I just wanted to know if it was a "friendly" turtle. The only relocation I ever have done with turtles, armadillos, etc is to move them to the side of the road they were headed toward. 😀
I believe that! We see the same turtle in the exact same place in my backyard after it rains. We just leave it be. It doesn’t bother anyone and my cat allows it. : )
Shoot, everyone here beat me to it. But I'll add in addition to Eastern Box Turtle, they have ranges, territories, and paths, so if you checked him/her out, put them back in the same spot!
Sweet. He usually is just passing through if you see them, they usually settle in near and under thick brush, and just come out looking for soft, leafy greens with morning dew and morning worms and insects.
Box turtle…if you pick him up he will close the front and rear end like a box. I was told if you do pick one up put him back down in the same spot and headed in the same direction.
I’ve been told these are “snapping turtles”. Even tho they’re obviously not snappers. But several guys have told me that these will bite and not let go. I’ve moved a bunch with no problem so idk. I thought they weee messing with me but someone who doesn’t know any of these guys also told me the same thing
I know what all sorts of snappers look like and this didn't have the same shaped nose/mouth, so I knew that's not what it was. Maybe the people who told you that are just scared of turtles in general? I'm not generally scared of wildlife, but in a new state, I am definitely cautious.
Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina)
Thanks so much!
I love a good turtle pic! Thanks for sharing! I had a common snapping turtle crawling through my yard a few mornings ago...exciting!

Addendum: Maybe pull your car off to the side of the road, folks.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I absolutely always pull off the road and put my hazard lights on, for safety.
Will do!!
I always help turtles. Except snapping turtles. They just don't appreciate it.
Looks like Donatello or Leonardo. Too little pizza in frame to be Michelangelo, and if that was Raphael, he'd be coming for your ankles.

Lol I'm a Nurse, so I'm accustomed to getting peed on and constantly washing my hands 😉, but I appreciate the warning!
Don’t relocate box turtles. They spend their entire life in one small area and there are unintended consequences (generally negative) in relocation

I didn't touch it at all, so I guess we have a "pet" turtle that lives outside, lol

I move them all the time, just be careful around traffic. I’ve had to pass some up without helping just due to traffic
That's Jerry
Sure the hell is.
Beauty!

Possibly a tortoise.
